The Welsh themselves would probably rather say “tenacious,” but to anyone on the receiving end a better description might well be “bloody-minded.” Proud and proud of it Welsh pride is real pride—the sort of mindless, instinctive, animal pride that requires no justification or excuse. It is simply pride for the sake of pride. Such pride is the only thing one has left when one has been stripped of everything else. It's not unusual to be... an actor Given the propensity of Welsh people of all types to overact at every given opportunity, it is not surprising that those who manage to tone it down a bit have gone on to world fame as actors (or politicians, who are, after all, only an inferior species of actors). Warriors at heart The Welsh are extremely proficient at rugby. They enjoy it and they take it seriously. This is because rugby—with its physical aggression, tactics, disciplined use of brute force, and organized violence—is the closest thing modern day life can offer to Wales' traditional national sport: war. Humor aside it really tells you a lot about the people of a country, lots of truths but all with lots of humor. Worth reading or great to give as a present (he got it at a Christmas party at his office!).There is much in the book to provoke a wry smile and even a chuckle, but when it comes to the author's comments on Welsh politics and bureaucracy a note of depression and even fatalism seeps in. The chapter on the Welsh Assembly could almost have been penned by my Welsh mother-in-law in a particularly low mood, and she would certainly agree with every word. The author may have been, as he says, overcome by hiraeth, so that he felt he had to return to his Welsh roots, but voluntary exile for many years as has certainly opened his eyes to the insular nature of many aspects of Welsh life and seems to have confirmed him in his views that Wales is being run by layer upon layer of opinionated committee members who seem to little care or know about the life of the ordinary people but do like the sound of their own voices. Whilst suffering this, the greatest punishment that can be inflicted on any Welshman, he got himself educated and studied to become a lawyer (being too lazy for medicine and completely unsuited for the Church). Living with the English for several years so broadened his mind that he became a rabid Welsh nationalist. The observations of the peculiarities and foibles of the Welsh are highly accurate and I could see myself in almost every paragraph, if not myself then certainly a not too distant relative or friend. My wife is English and she feels the accuracy of the book is second to none and would probably never have married me had she read it 20 years ago. Culturally, it is possible when you come from a small nation, to take yourself too seriously. Richards, also a Welshman, avoids this with honest, self-deprecating wit. A great read or a nice gift for the Welshman (or someone who is not so blessed ) in your life.http://ekobart.com/images/brother-printer-service-manual.pdf’ Reviewed by S Fairney, Hampshire, UK. This book achieves the mini-miracle of convincing the reader that, while there may be a fair bit of truth in these prejudices, there is more to it than that, and that the Welsh are different, not just an addition to England. I expected to be at best slightly amused, but came away with fresh knowledge, and (briefly!) sympathetic to the subject matter, which surprised me. Working its way through religion, sport, social structure (the Welsh Matriarchy), drinking, rugby, and more drinking, it had me laughing out loud with its insightful observations (although these were not always complimentary, they were all true!).’ Reviewer from Ottawa, Canada Open this link and laugh at the best of Welsh humour. My ancestors are from quite a few different countries, though my family are a bit odd in their various ways, so I don't necessarily expect to see much correspondence between them and popular 'national characteristics' - here the only one was the matriarchs. Winterson Richards is evidently from South Wales.https://www.fattyweng.com.sg/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628d83cdc0d7c---Carrier-33cs250-01-manual.pdf At the beginning he mentions the differences between the regions of Wales - then for the rest of the book goes on to describe what sounds an awful lot like South Wales (going by my limited experience of visiting the place, when the North Welsh always seemed quieter, for a start). Or rather it sounds like the backdrop to an early 60s kitchen sink drama set in the Valleys: rugby, beer, lads down the club and 'er indoors, irreverence, gossip, cronyism, singing etc etc. All the references to work are about coal mining (S), not slate (N). And it's pretty much told from the POV of that bloke down the working men's club. What would the typical formidable Welsh Mam, as described here, have to say about it all. One interesting point is a dislike of too much success, like an economic aspect of Scandinavian Jante Law, (but without the efficiency and organisation to balance it out). This allegedly means that many driven Welsh people leave, contributing to a paucity of Welsh-owned major companies, too many big employers having always been from elsewhere, as far back as the Industrial Revolution. Whilst evidently dear to the author, a business consultant and former Tory, this idea ties in somewhat to the novel that prompted me to pick this up, The Hill of Dreams by Arthur Machen - although it's eccentricity and dissenting views that are a problem for its hero in the late nineteenth century. This modern book mentions a tolerance for eccentricity within certain bounds, but the overall feeling is of a communitarian society with obvious parameters (like Jante Law again). He never mentions was how physically small the place feels - because most buildings are strikingly short compared with England, Scotland, anywhere I've been, in fact. (Easy material for the kind of cheap jokes these books specialise in, if you jiggle this idea about a bit and add the short average height.) Xenophobe's Guide to the Welsh just wasn't as funny as the other, Continental, guides I've read so far.www.fishinnj.com/userfiles/files/6bt-manual.pdf Could that be because the jokes are already over-familiar. Guess I'll have to read the English one at some point to test that theory. This book tried so hard to be funny and while some cultural aspects of the Welsh were somewhat interesting i had to force myself to even finish it.I never read any of the editions because I don't enjoy humour based on nationalist stereotypes very much. And there is a very good reason for that. They settled, tried to intergrate themselves with the indigenous population and failed. It lasts all your life and it is apparently more important to play than to win - a sentiment which is more reminiscent of Confucius than Carruthers. It is useless to imagine that you can succeed where so many have failed. But since it is the proudest English boast that they cannot begin to understand foreigners, it would be gratifying to steal a march on them by beginning to understand them. The further one travels from the capital in any direction, the more outlandish the people become. This they see as no petty prejudice but rather as a scientific observation. The Irish are perceived as being wildly eccentric at best, completely mad at worst. The Welsh are dishonest and the Scots are dour and mean. For most English they are not quite as appalling as their cousins across the Channel. The English love France. They love its food and wine and thoroughly approve of its climate. There is a subconscious historical belief that the French have no right to be living in France at all, to the extent that thousands of Englishmen try annually to turn the more attractive areas of France into little corners of Surrey. Germans are megalomaniac, easily-led bullies who have not even the saving grace of culinary skill. Further afield English odium is no less concentrated. Americans and Australians are vulgar, Canadians are boring, and all oriental peoples inscrutable and dangerous. They appear to be tolerant to a fault. In actually, they only value foreigners for their backs - which they can use for talking behind. To the Southerner, civilizarion ends somewhere around Potters Bar (just north of London). Beyond that point, he believes, the inhabitants are all ruddier in complexion, more hirsute and blunt to the point of rudeness. These traits he generously puts down to the cooler climate. They point to their softness, their mucked-about food and their airy-fairiness on all matters of real importance. Nevertheless, any English man or woman, no matter how soft or hairy, is entitled to special treatment as, to a lesser extent, are the inhabitants of those countries which represent the English conscience - once the Empire, now the shrinking Commonwealth. They express little emotion. They are not so much slow as stationary to anger and the pleasures of life seem to pass them by as they revel in discomfort and self-denial. The unlikely effect of all this is that outsiders have a kind of grudging respect for them. This is partly because they amuse, and partly because they are consistent. They also believe that all other nations secretly know that they are. These they take very seriously, which means that throughout life they act rather like head boys or head girls in school. They see it as their solemn duty to protect the weak, strengthen the faint-hearted and shame bullies into submission. These are their roles in life and they fulfil them, by and large, to their entire satisfaction. These qualities, which they bring selflessly to the world forum, include a reflex action which leads them to champion the underdog and treat persecutors with a firm hand, absolute truthfulness and a commitment never to break a promise or to go back ott one's word. Then, and only then, would they achieve the recognition and affection they feel they so richly deserve. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again.
