For instance, a number of pages talk about various film types, including color infrared film, which is not even available for sale any more. In a way, it covers most topics in photography, although not to intense depth. Just enough to give you some usable, foundation knowledge. Each topic covers about two to four pages. The topics appear to be grouped into four categories: technical information about camera and equipment, technical aspects of creating an image (different types of light, movement, white balance, black and white photographs, etc), compositional techniques (viewpoints, form, tone, using colour, patterns, etc), and special projects. Special projects are photo taking situations, for example, portraits, sports photography, etc. The main things I like about this book are: (1)Wide coverage of so many topics I appreciate how many different skills go into making good images. These skills are described all in one book. (2)Good writing style The text is easy to understand (3)Efficient use of photographs and their captions to make the main points The author doesn't use the main text to make all the key points he wants to tell the reader. Many of them are in the photograph captions. The photographs are good at demonstrating what the author is saying. This writing style also reduces the amount of reading to understand the author's message. (4) Lots of photographs The downside: (1)Even though each topic is covered to a working depth - you can immediately learn enough to apply the technique - it's not everything that you could possibly know about that topic. If you want great depth, you'd have to find a book specialising in that topic. (2)The book is also more oriented towards film than digital photography. However, since most image-creating skills are common to both, it's not a big disadvantage to me. Overall, this is a fine book. Highly expert photographers probably won't get much from it. The book would be good for beginner and intermediate photographers who are serious about learning how to take good images. I suspect this is the audience the author is trying to reach.http://sivakandiah.com/userfiles/c6-crane-training-manual.xmlHowever, this one is well organized and is a good reference book when you need to go back and read up on a particular topic. If you don't already have a Hedgecoe book, THIS is the one to have. It is the best photography book on my bookshelf. Be careful to get the right one, many of his books are named very similarly. This book touches on all the necessary subjects in order to more quickly advance you photo skill level. I would highly recommend it.I wish the whole book was re done as now i have old (2003) and new (2009) and their nearly identical. It's simple, very practical and has a great photo material to illustrate its content. I would highly recommend it.The chapters are clearly laid out with techniques and theory explained simply and detailed with clear and evocative photographs. Despite originally having a clear film focus the principles of photography are the same regardless of format and so this book is suitable for all photographers. This version has an updated section on digital photography. It is this book that really inspired me to learn about photography as a skill and an art form. It is responsible for helping make the most of all my photographs and photo opportunities. If you are looking for a book as a beginner or immediate level photographer to help you improve and understand your hobby this is it. I can't recommend it more highly.John Hedgecoe covers his subject extremely thoroughly,it is hard to think of any aspect of photography that is left untouched. The is very easy to read and is beautifully illustrated. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in photgraphy.I particularly like the split between the text and the pictures that clearly show what the text explains. Haven't read all of it yet but it's a very complete book and covers everything you could think of regarding photography, cameras and how to take good pictures. Certainly worth having if you want to seriously start learning about photography. I highly recommend it!http://schlammatlas.de/en/node/18846 Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. But I would definitely call this book a photography encyclopedia. It has everything you'd ever want to know about photography and more. It's a wonderful resource for tips and strategies on how to set your camera and compose a shot under any type of conditions. It's definitely a more technical book, but has great explanations of photography terms as well as a rather extensive glossary. Beginners can benefit from certain sections in this book, but it also has a lot of information for more professional photographers including sections on studio equipment and actual dark room film development. I've owned it for years but never really opened it. Finally took a scan through it today as i was looking for specifics on portraiture. Covers a broad list of topics, from film to composure to lighting. Great refernce guide for any photographers library. I've owned it for years but never really opened it. Great refernce guide for any photographers library. I may not have enough time to read it quickly and actually practice photography to the extent I would like, but this book is a keeper. This is probably the only book to be traveling with me wherever I go. I read it once but I keep coming back to read some chapters again and again. It's a reference.
