I love this method, it makes for a very clean main text to read, leaving the reader free to drop back whenever they hit an idea they want to follow up on and trace out Massumi's citations. We take the journal itself as a research site, not necessarily as representative of cultural studies at large, but as a significant location where we might be able to trace out when, where, and how Deleuze, Guattari, and Deleuze and Guattari were taken up, critiqued, cited, or at least mentioned, and what that could tell us about the intellectual work of cultural studies more generally over the last 30 years. Cultural studies is not driven by theory (or at least it shouldn’t be). Deleuze and Foucault’s notion of theory as a toolbox (Foucault 1977 ) therefore has some resonance for cultural studies work: what concepts are useful for this particular conjuncture. This is, in a sense, a detour from theory into metatheory or philosophy in order to reflect on the toolbox itself, on the choices that cultural studies (and Cultural Studies ) has made about what tools to put in it, and on the ways in which Deleuzian and Guattarian concepts have played a role in shaping those tools or creating new ones. As we began this project, the research questions proliferated: What concepts were taken up, in what way, and when. Which concepts were ignored or significantly absent from the work in the journal. How did the focus on certain concepts shift over time. To what extent did Deleuze and Guattari’s practice of philosophical invention become a model for the creation of new concepts in cultural studies. What might this imply about concerns and problematics that were taken up in various historical conjunctures. How were Deleuze and Guattari read. How were their concepts redeployed. To what uses were they put. How did their concepts begin to inflect or rearticulate the work of cultural studies (as it appeared in the journal). What trajectories were generated. How was other work fomented (beyond the pages of the journal). Obviously, it is beyond the scope of this article to address all of these questions, and so our aim, more modestly, is to offer some initial observations about the articulations of cultural studies with the work of Deleuze and Guattari in order to start (or perhaps continue) a conversation about the relations that have developed as well as the potential for engaging Deleuze and Guattari in other ways. We had two images in mind when conceiving of this project. The first was Deleuze and Guattari’s own notion of concepts from What is Philosophy. Concepts, they assert, are of particular times, places, and situations, though they can be redeployed and rearticulated in different contexts. Deleuze and Guattari write: Of course, new concepts must relate to our problems, to our history, and, above all, to our becomings. But what does it mean for a concept to be of our time, or of any time. Concepts are not eternal, but does this mean that they are temporal. What is the philosophical form of the problems of a particular time. For Deleuze and Guattari to be cited in an essay in the journal, this means that the author (most likely at another institution) had read their work and wished to make use of something from Deleuze and Guattari in their own research. But why was that person reading their work. What were the networks of production that allowed the essay or book by Deleuze, Guattari, or Deleuze and Guattari to reach that person. What was the intellectual landscape of that person such that this work made sense and was seen as a contribution. As part of that network, particularly when considering English-language uses of Deleuze and Guattari, as in this journal, we would need to consider when and why specific pieces were translated. Was there perceived to be enough of a market for the publisher to make a commitment. Was it politically or intellectually important that this piece be translated for that time and audience. What about networks of education: Were these pieces taught. Where, by whom, and why. Were they suggested through interpersonal networks. What are the discourse networks that have crisscrossed the journal, as one key node in a larger discursive formation. How have the pages of the journal served as a space for what James Carey, drawing on Heidegger, called the conversation of cultural studies (Carey 1989, p. 85), and how might we now pick up the threads of that conversation in order to carry it forward. A bit of history 1 Deleuze and Guattari have been a presence in the journal since its very first issue. Cultural Studies began as the Australian Journal of Cultural Studies in 1983, a formation that has its own intellectual landscape and institutional history (see, e.g. Turner 1989, Frow 2005, Stratton 2016 ). 3 While we have yet to review all the issues of that iteration of the journal, 4 we do note that in the first issue John Frow ( 1983 ) cites Deleuze and Foucault discussing the idea of theory as a tool kit. Once the journal made its move to North America, the continued presence of Deleuze and Guattari was not surprising. Lawrence Grossberg (who co-edited the journal with Janice Radway) and others at the University of Illinois (such as Martin Allor, Jennifer Daryl Slack, and Charles Stivale) had been reading Deleuze and Guattari since the late 1970s (following the publication in English of Anti-Oedipus, in 1977 by Viking, and later, in 1983 by the University of Minnesota Press, and then the publication of Brian Massumi’s English translation of A Thousand Plateau s by the University of Minnesota Press in 1987). Meaghan Morris taught a seminar at the University of Illinois at Grossberg’s invitation in 1990, further exposing cultural studies graduate students there to Deleuze and Guattari’s work. Of course, this is a partial history, as all histories are. The preliminary notes we offer here could be developed in richer detail, and many other histories could be composed. We invite readers to join the conversation and contribute to the story. A note on methods For this project, our dataset was all the issues of Cultural Studies from 1:1 (1987) to the latest issues available in 2018 (Volume 32, the first two issues). These included the volumes published in Australia, edited by John Fiske. All issues are available online through Taylor and Francis. This resulted in a list of over 160 essays. We then reviewed each essay, noting to what extent Deleuze and Guattari’s concepts were used, which concepts were most prominent, and what works were cited. We also assessed how these concepts were used in the author’s argument. We did basic open coding of keywords and citations over time; however, we must stress that this was not a systematic textual analysis and was not meant to be. Such an analysis of the history of translation and publication of Deleuze and Guattari’s work is beyond the scope of this essay. 6 We can only offer some preliminary observations, about what did make it into the journal, as notes for a longer genealogy. We also need to recognize one key limitation to our approach: explicit citations in a published journal article are only one kind of trace (and one that is particularly formalized); they cannot tell the whole story of the influence of thinkers and concepts on someone’s work. There are a number of pieces we reviewed where Deleuze, Guattari, or Deleuze and Guattari were barely mentioned but were clearly a part of the author’s broader approach to a subject, a particular way of engaging a problematic, or simply a way of thinking. This sort of influence cannot be captured by simply looking for names or citations.
