With its electronic viewfinder and interchangeable lenses, the G2 is capable of not only recording professional-quality still images, but has the added ability to record HD video as well. The mirrorless design enhances the camera's versatility beyond that of most digital single lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. Digger 5.0 out of 5 stars However with this being my first 'serious' camera and Panasonic's manual for the camera being about as confusing as it can be, yes it covers the actual functions of the camera but gives no idea of what, when or where any particular function may be used to best effect. This book does exactly that in plain, simple language which at times is actually amusing but direct to the point.www.concrete-mix-plant.com/d/files/canon-speedlite-430-manual-download.pdf For example when explaining auto focus the authors compare it to the human eye which also auto focuses but the human knows what it wants to focus on 'the mountains in the background or your friends in the foreground?'.'the camera has no friends'. The authors also explain that the camera has a plethora of settings (tell me about it) but in reality the majority will never be needed unless one specialises in a particular type of photography. All are explained clearly should you need them but advice is given which to have switched on and which to have switched off for general use. Brilliant. As I said at the beginning I own a G3 so some of the buttons are not where described by the book but with a little thought it is easy to work out what the author is describing. The G3 also has a few extra facilities, i.e. pinpoint focusing but as this book describes the three other options of focus common to both cameras it's child's play to work out what the extra focus does. If you own a Panasonic G2 or G3 series camera this book is a must have. Forget the manual use the book. It's much easier. Highly recommended.Yes, you can use its user friendly settings if you wish, but it has much to offer the enthusiast who wishes to take more control, and this is where the book is extremely useful. All the functions, including custom settings, are clearly explained. Recommended. As the GH1 is now obsolete, I have given up all hope of finding an intelligible manual for it. The volume under review is a nicely presented, glossy covered, paperback book consisting of 276 pages printed on reasonable quality paper, with only a suggestion of translucency, so that the print on the reverse of the page is not intrusive. At 153mm wide, it is rather too big to be carried in a pocket, so tends to spend most of it's time on the bookshelf. Nevertheless, I have ordered one of those plastic book protectors to prevent the delicate edges of the cover from being spoiled in the bottom of my bag. The contents are well laid out and indexed, according to function, over 10 chapters and an Appendix. Most of the illustrations are colour photographs of the camera itself and of the LCD screen. In this way, the authors have managed to convey and explain the intricacies of the model's menu system and subjects such as the use of histograms and the various focussing modes, which (rather surprisingly for me) are very similar to my own camera. If you have bought a G3, just don't expect it to cover all the latest gizmos but, otherwise, I would rate this book as a definite asset to anybody with a Lumix G-series camera and well worth the price paid.It is comprehensively indexed and easy to find what you want. On the other hand you can read it from start to finish, trying out all the settings and techniques suggested by the authors, but it could take a lifetime there is so much in it. It is written in an easy to read conversational style, the authors are not afraid to make recommendations for settings, or even extra accessories but they always give reasons for their views. I am a reasonably competent photographer, the G2 was a step up from the compact and bridge cameras I had been using. This book has helped me to start to take full advantage of the full range of features. In fact this is the only book I have ever bought both as a paperback and then as a kindle version so I can have it with me wherever I find myself with my camera. The menu for the G2, althouth reasonably intuitive, is complex. Unlike so many similar books it is written in plain english and very easy to follow. If the menu is similar to that in the the G3 and G5 models, this book might well be of help to owners of those as well. As an ex(heavy!) DSLR user I can say that these cameras are an excellent progression which, never the less, need understanding. This book is an excellent aid in doing so. BarnabasIt is written in clear English by someone who obviously uses the camera, but who sees the camera from the perspectve of someone who is less familiar. It takes a special skill to make something accessible - and Matsumoto has that skill. Thank you.If only tech equipment came with manuals like this instead of the fairly useless tour of the menus that you usually get. It is well worth spending the money on this as it gives good advise not only on what the various controls do but also when to use them, the best settings, and how effective they are. The writing is clear and easy going too and the production quality and photos clear and illustrate the points well. That's a responsibility we take seriously, one that deserves the best effort we're capable of.The Exposure Mode dial on top of the camera sets the main shooting mode, with the following options: Aperture Priority: Lets the user control the aperture setting while the camera selects the best shutter speed. (The aperture range varies with the lens in use.). When shooting movies, most functions are available, but the aperture and shutter speed both remain under automatic control. When shooting movies, most functions are available, but the aperture and shutter speed both remain under automatic control.A Bulb shutter setting also becomes available in this mode, allowing variable length exposures for as long as you hold down the shutter button, to a maximum exposure time of four minutes. When shooting movies, most functions are available, but the aperture and shutter speed both remain under automatic control. The aperture range varies with the lens in use, and the precise shutter speed remains under automatic control although it can be tweaked in the desired direction using exposure compensation. ISO sensitivity is controlled automatically in this mode. Balances the foreground subject illuminated by flash with the ambient light of the background. Sub-options include Night Portrait, Night Scenery, Illuminations (outdoor lighting at night), and Creative Night Scenery, which allows changes in the aperture value for special effects. Sub-options include Flower, Food, Objects and Creative. Sub-options include Normal, Nature, Architecture and Creative, the latter allowing control of the shutter speed. (Perhaps for deliberately blurring motion of waterfalls, fountains, etc.) Sub-options include Normal Portrait (large aperture and soft skin tones), Soft Skin (introducing additional color-based blurring of skin areas by the camera's processor), Outdoor Portrait (compensates for backlighting), Indoor Portrait (intelligent ISO control to prevent blurring) and Creative Portrait (allows direct control of aperture setting). Presets include Expressive, Retro, Pure, Elegant. Monochrome, Dynamic Art, and Silhouette. Pressing the iA button toggles between activating iAuto mode, and returning to the operating mode selected on the Mode dial. An LED in the center of the iA button illuminates when the G2 is in iAuto mode, at which point the options selected on both the Mode and AF Mode dials are overridden. There is one exception to this, in that the Motion P position on the Mode dial does still configure the camera for movie recording, although the iAuto functions appropriate to movie recording are now enabled. The camera automatically detects a subset of seven common scene types (or four types when recording movies), or falls back to a standard iAuto mode if an appropriate scene type isn't detected. In all cases, automatically adjusts settings appropriately. Other functions that are automatically enabled in iAuto mode include face detection autofocus, red-eye removal, intelligent ISO sensitivity control, intelligent exposure, long-shutter noise reduction, quick AF, backlight compensation, and intelligent resolution. When shooting movies, you can specify the quality, dimensions and compression (except for the 16:9 WVGA Motion JPEG mode), and disable or set the strength of the wind cut function. Movies will be recorded using whatever mode is currently selected. This button can be enabled or disabled in some modes via a Custom Settings Menu setting. Confusingly, the Intelligent Auto mode provides only limited options on the Custom Settings menu, and the Movie button will retain whatever setting it had when it was last set. So users might find themselves in iA mode unable to trigger a movie when they want to, and also unable to find the option on the Custom Settings menu that would let them do so. (In fact, the camera will tell you to check the setting for the Movie Record button if you press it and it's disabled, but in iA mode, there's no way to turn it back on again.) The left and right arrow keys, as well as the up and down keys, scroll through the images on the card, or you can also scroll between images by dragging your finger horizontally across the surface of the touch-screen display. You can enlarge captured images or display them in index or calendar formats for quick viewing by rotating the rear dial. The following options are available in most camera modes as menu tabs down the left side of the display. (Full auto mode greatly reduces the available options, to simplify camera operation.) The maximum image width at full resolution is always 4,000 pixels for the non-square options, the aspect ratios wider than 4:3 just crop top and bottom. NOTE that you can have different image sizes set for each aspect ratio, so you could shoot full-resolution at 4:3, but (for instance), small-size files at 3:2, for making 4x6 inch prints. To enhance recognition accuracy, up to 3 separate photos can be registered for a single individual's face. For example, you can shoot from slightly different angles, to improve the chances of recognition. Optical Image Stabilizer modes. Current models lacking stabilization are the 7-14mm zoom, and the 20mm prime. If this option is enabled and the flash is in any of the red-eye reduction modes, the camera will examine the captured images and remove any red-eye that it finds. Note that this adjustment is independent of the ambient exposure compensation, accessed via the rear dial, so you can adjust flash and ambient exposure independently. This menu option varies the amount of the effect applied to your photos. (The effect is always enabled in iA mode, and the amount is adjusted automatically.) This menu option varies the amount of the effect applied to your photos. (The effect is always enabled in iA mode, and the amount is adjusted automatically.) When set to Off, Auto ISO is limited to 400 by default, and Intelligent ISO is limited to 800 by default or 400 when using flash. It isn't possible to set a limit for movie recording. This doubles the time for each shot for long exposures, but reduces image noise. If the lens' zoom ring is rotated beyond the point of maximum optical zoom, the G2 crops a portion from the center of the image, with the maximum Extra Optical Zoom position simply cropping the actual image dimensions from the center of the sensor data. The effect is similar to a traditional digital zoom, except that the image isn't interpolated to match the resolution of an uncropped image. AVCHD Liteis meant for playback on an HDTVvia HDMI. Motion JPEG makes much larger files, but doesn't produce as many compression artifacts with moving subjects. The options available vary depending on whether AVCHD Lite or Motion JPEG is selected for the recording mode. The Motion JPEG WVGA setting is not available in Intelligent Auto mode. See still image equivalent in Record Menu 4 for further discussion. They can then be quickly accessed via the CUST option on the mode dial. Exposure - Ex. Opt.
