Davis, EdD, PT documents her 28 years of success in teaching health professionals. This third edition of Dr. Davis' best-seller includes five new chapters from three invited authors dedicated to teaching readers how to effectively communicate with patients. Experts in the field address communicating with cultural sensitivity, and interfacing with persons with chronic disabilities. Educating patients in health behavior and discussing sexuality and disability are included in this updated text. Another chapter is devoted to communicating using Neurolinguistic Psychology. Dr. Davis also added more information to her existing chapter that examines moral dilemmas, especially those dilemmas emerging from managed care. Special Features Each chapter begins with a set of clearly outlined objectives to identify learning goals and concludes with experiential exercises to promote goal achievement.http://kwik-it.ru/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/162847e4332b15---bunn-coffee-maker-manual-vp17-series.pdf A unique and practical format that contains thought provoking exercises to evoke self-awareness and reinforce learning. Gumshoo 5.0 out of 5 stars Leaned some great things about practice and addressing issues with clients. Professionalism is now a standard element in health care curricula, but anyone who has tried to teach professionalism knows that it is easier said than done. Hence, there is a continuing need for this book.chooset.com/galeria/files/7-speed-manual-transmission-with-active-rev-matching-and-launch-control.pdf This fourth edition has expanded and evolved, but remains true to its original goal—guiding students toward developing the “art of health care.” This includes learning about ethics, values, and communication and acknowledging the emotional needs of patients. This book is clearly geared to beginning students with limited experience in patient interaction. Written in a very basic manner, the author uses a liberal amount of tables and lists, easy-to-follow chapter headings, and lots of white space. The text is presented in a workbook-style format, creating a user-friendly layout. Each chapter opens with learning objectives and ends with exercises that could be done individually or in small groups. There are 2 major sections in the book. Chapters 1 through 7 are fairly generic, covering topics such as defining values, resolving moral dilemmas, effective listening, and conflict resolution. The conversational tone makes the book easy to read, but at times the text feels limited and dated. For example, chapter 2, “Family History,” cites 8 references dating from 1954 to 1990. In these days of evidence-based practice, it is likely that a student will question how we know that these exercises will work and why more recent references are not provided. Some of the strongest chapters are found in the second section of the book. Several of these chapters were written by contributing authors—Helen Masin (chapter 9: “Communicating With Cultural Sensitivity”), Kathleen Curtis (chapter 11: “Health Behavior and Effective Patient Education“), and Sherrill Hayes (chapter 13: “Sexuality and Disability: Effective Communication”). These chapters move the book away from general interpersonal interaction and into more specific scenarios that students may encounter in clinical affiliations and throughout their careers. These chapters are supported by more substantial reference lists and challenging exercises.http://www.holderit.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/162847e549eb85---bunn-coffee-makers-manuals-vpr-series.pdf The book’s greatest strength, a straight-forward, easy-to-understand workbook style, may also be its greatest weakness. In my opinion, some of the material in the earlier chapters seemed a bit basic for a DPT program and may be similar to what is taught in undergraduate psychology courses. Nevertheless, a review of the basic concepts could be beneficial when presented within a clinical framework. Pulling in clinical scenarios to discuss the inherent ethics, values, and communication issues is an option that could enhance the relevance of the introductory material to DPT students. In conclusion, this book has served physical therapist students and educators well since the first edition appeared 15 years ago. The fourth edition includes some new material to reflect changes in health care, such as managed care and cultural diversity. The busy instructor may find the individual and group exercises a welcome resource. Others may find that some of the material lacks depth, and they will want to supplement it with current research and more complex clinical scenarios. This book is written by physical therapists, so the material provided would fit comfortably in physical therapist and physical therapist assistant curricula, but it certainly could be adapted to other health care providers as well. York is currently with the Postprofessional DPT program and also teaches professional issues and development modules for the DPT program. Verisign. While the ways of communication have evolved over the last 23 years, the face-to-face role of the practitioner and patient has not. With technology having a large presence in health care, the personal interaction and comfort provided by the health care professional serves an even more important purpose in facilitating healing with therapeutic presence. Patient Practitioner Interaction, Fifth Edition begins with chapters that assist students in self- awareness and understanding of their own history in developing their values and communication skills. This then guides the student into learning how to differentiate personal values from professional values. In the remaining chapters, Dr. Carol M. Davis and her contributors take Patient Practitioner Interaction, Fifth Edition into the heart of the text: teaching actual skill development in communicating with patients, as well as skills in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. The updated exercises at the end of each chapter encourage an essential element in the inculcation of these fundamental skills—reflection and personalization of the material to one’s own story. From the Foreword by Dr. Helen J. Hislop: “The author and contributors have made the topic not just a walk through social and personal issues and professional and personal behaviors, they have encased it in a scientific format of mainstream humanity, within each individual, between a caregiver and a care receiver, between friends or adversaries. Even more notably, Dr. Davis has provided health professionals with a road map to personal growth and worth and a source of human behavior that will engender faith, trust, and open and honest interactions between patients and therapists—in short, a thesaurus and encyclopedia of the sacred trust that must exist for a successful humanitarian experience in the health care arena.” Patient Practitioner Interaction: An Experiential Manual for Developing the Art of Health Care, Fifth Edition by Dr. Carol M. Davis is the answer to every curriculum’s need to develop effective interpersonal professional behavior in their students. In addition to being the author of Patient Practitioner Interaction: An Experiential Manual for Developing the Art of Health Care, Fifth Edition, she is the editor of Complementary Therapies in Rehabilitation: Evidence for Efficacy in Therapy, Prevention, and Wellness, Third Edition, also published by SLACK Incorporated, and co-editor of Therapeutic Interaction in Nursing.
