It's quite unfortunate that Danciu has put his name on this poor excuse for a book. Luckily, I bought the PDF version, so I wasn't responsible for any trees dying.When i bought this book,i did not know where to start or how to start. I knew how to install Jasper Reports. But i could not find something to help me on This book. 1. It says on the Book:Demonstrates how Jasper Reports can be used in a variety of Java-enabled applications I did not see any Examples. Nothing only descriptions. I was Very Disappointed with this book. If i want a brief Guide on What jasper reports can do,I can Find it on the internet. We need Examples,Full Code examples and Explanation. No Explanation,NO CODE,No Examples.The APress printed book is the same as the on-line PDF version. The scope of the book is cleanly defined: JasperReports. It does not cover Eclipse plugins or related libraries such as JFreeChart. It does not mention JasperServer. The book is comprehensive, though more of a reference than a tutorial. I would have been pleased to see more tutorial information and chase a few rabbits for related topics. Other people may appreciate it's close adherence to scope.I found this book to be significantly better than most technical books. This book is a conceptual overview of JasperReports. It's NOT an extended tutorial or a learn-by-example book. The book assumes you already understand Java and XML, and does not re-explain those technologies. It doesn't just repeat the javadoc. The book accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish, reasonably well.In my opinion you are better off just reading the api.That said, with APIs being the exclusive domain of the coder.It also be lack of examples. I did find the book useful as an introduction to JasperReports and iReport, which is what I was looking for, otherwise if you are looking for a cookbook with advanced report examples, this book is not it.This book is 300 pages of screen shots with no examples of input.
