TheDaveL 4.0 out of 5 stars There is a good bit of the book that deals with the history of the runes, which was pretty good. The explanations of the 'meanings' fit with other sources that I found to use for comparison. It does have a few really bizarre sections that have to do with 'runic yoga' and such. Maybe cool for some people, but I wasn't looking for someone's idea of how to mix different mysticism systems. Over all, it was a good purchase for me.I am attempting to gain a better understanding of European and Norse gods but primarily I am looking for an understanding of divination with runes. This book seems to cover as wide spectrum of most anything relating to runes. I'm not certain I could digest more information. He covers different rune alphabets and gods, goddesses associated with them; other uses of the runes; magic and divination with runes; all in a format of short chapters and colorful art and pictures illustrating the text. This format holds my interest. He seems to historically document where his information comes from.http://mixline.ru/img/lib/hunter-44660-thermostat-manual.xml

A great book the is worthy of collecting.Pennick is one of the best resources for Germanic, Celtic, and Northern European history of religious and spiritual practices. He provides a great overview of the history of runes from the Elder Futhark to the Armen runes of the 20th century. Loads of images, explanations and references provide a great book to get a basic understanding to approach the runes for spiritual study. Recommended as a starting point to get the basics prior to moving to other authors for runes as divination and magical use or for the purely archeological and historical usage. This book has helped me more than any other so far in learning about and understanding the history of runes and their application to my daily life. Frodi Ingsson 5.0 out of 5 stars Pennick gives two pages to every topic, giving the reader enough information to begin their investigations, but not enough to truly know anything in depth. The only downside as far as I’m concerned is the lack of references. I’ve come across many of the things the author talks about from other sources, and so, I know where he’s getting some of his information, but for someone just starting their Runic Journey, it would have been nice to give them more to go on. For instance, Pennick talks about the warlock sent by Harald Gormsson to check out Iceland’s defenses only to discover it was guarded by four Landv?ttir: dragon to the east, eagle to the north, bull to the west, and giant to the south (139). He does not footnote nor offer the text in his references. For those interested it comes from the 33rd chapter of the “Saga of Olaf Tryggvason” in Heimskringla (Hollander’s translation). Out of the three books I’ve read from Pennick, this one captures the essence of them all. Pennick is heavily stepped in western occultism as well as traditional sources of Runic knowledge.http://fscl.ru/content/husky-air-scout-owners-manual Adding to that his knowledge of linguistics and other studies, he offers one of the most well rounded approaches to the Runes while still offering many insights and avenues for further study and meditation. While traditionalist will roll their eyes at Pennick, I can say from my own studies that he does capture the main points traditionalists have to offer while honoring the other Runic branches as well. I highly suggest this book for anyone interested in Runes. This is the first book on my suggested Rune Reading List: 1. The Complete Illustrated Guide to Runes by Nigel Pennick 2. Way of the Runes by Bernard King 3. Runes: Reading the Past by R.I Page 4. Runelore: A Handbook of Esoteric Runology by Edred Thorsson 5. Nordic Runes by Paul Rhys Mountfort 6. Taking up the Runes Diana L Paxson 7. Runecaster’s Handbook Edred Thorsson 8. Poetic Edda by either Hollander, Crawford, or Larrington 9. Prose Edda by Jesse L. Byock 10. Havamal Meditations: Embodying O?inn’s Teachings by Frodi Ingsson (forthcoming) 11. Runes of Transformation by Kaedrich Olsen 12. Helrunar by Jan Fries 13. Runes and Magic by Stephen E. Flowers 14. Plowright 5.0 out of 5 stars The majority of rune manuals merely use the symbols as a vehicle to carry an author's New-Age message, without any research into the historical facts. Pennick is a bright exception. His many years as an active Pagan has given him a real respect for Pagan and Heathen traditions. His scientific background has given him an eye for detail, and an ability to dig up the facts. The quality of this glossy tour of runic lore is unique. I would recommend it as one of the best introductions for those interested in the runes, whether for divination, or as part of their heritage. Sweyn Please try again later. A.G. Storm 5.0 out of 5 stars This book contains everything you would ever want to know about the history of runes. This one book also provides information on how to make runes, how to read the runes, and of course, how to use them. There are no overly religious overtones as there are in some books about runes that for me take away from the pagan mystique. Also, the illustrations in the book are excellent which aid in learning the runes. If you don't like history and prefer to simply know how to use them, not a problem, just skip ahead in the book. Please try again later. For example, when describing a complicated spatial design in which the runes were written like a tree of life, the long verbal description made absolutely no spatial sense. It's an illustrated guide. Illustrate it! I'm also skeptical if runes were ever used in numerology, astrology and yoga(!?) But then again, I'm a bit of a purist. The book does have many interesting facts though, as well as some great illustrations. I'm also skeptical if runes were ever used in numerology, astrology and yoga(!?) Sweyn The Rune PrimerThis is a great book for someone making the leap from beginner to expert, as far as working with the runes. If you have anything to do with runes, then you definitely should get this book!It explains the runes of 5 different systems: Elder futhark, Anglo-saxon and northumbrian runes, Younger futhark, Gothic and medieval runes, and the Armanen runes, and goes over the meaning of each individual rune and why it means what it does. This also goes over rune use through out history, what runes are, and an almost endless amount of different uses for the runes.I RECOMEND this book FOR deciding what rune system you might want to use, or just good facts on what runes are whether or not you belive in or want to use them.I am NOT a neo-pagan or involved with wicca or any spiritual group.
