Even with the menu option set to disable noise reduction, the 5D Mark II still uses it. I don't use this in good light because I can't shoot at any slower than at ISO 200 with it ON, and ISO 200 gives visible noise in the shadows. They are much, much sharper and cleaner than images from cameras on which that is their native resolution. When you start with over 20MP, it looks pretty good if you use all those to make 11MP or 5MP. No digital camera really resolves its rated resolution; they cheat and interpolate up, so at 100 at its rated resolution, no digital camera image is as sharp as a true scan from film. If Sigma was selling this, they'd sell the 5MP (S) setting as if it were 15MP (also a lie). The S (5MP) setting of the 5D Mark II is a lot sharper than any 5MP camera. For instance, the 11MP setting of the 5D Mark II has way more detail than any of the 12MP (native) Nikon cameras. The camera focuses, and locks as soon as it gets focus. You then may recompose. Otherwise, the 5D Mark II will keep trying to pull focus control away from you. It never stops; it always tracks your subject in and out. This clever setting usually selects whichever of the two settings above is appropriate, and uses it. In most cases, the 5D Mark II will keep trying to focus in AI FOCUS unless you're on a tripod. You never have to click around to get where you want. On Nikon, you'd have to click right twice. Want the bottom sensor. Just click down from wherever you are. Push the top right button on the back of the 5D Mark II; no menus required for any of this. If the other sensors aren't doing well in dim light, choose the center sensor and you'll be much happier. If you need more details about what you're setting, press the SET button again, but it's not necessary. The instant you've changed something, it's done. For manual exposure, look at the bar graph in the finder or on the old top LCD. To make this INFO screen go away, you have to press INFO again. You won't erase what you saved. These changes will stay until the camera times-out, usually one minute (you can change that duration in the menus), and the next time you go to shoot, even if you had changed something, you're back at your saved settings. Everything is saved. This recalls the setting. This is what I saved that changes for me from setting to setting. It is off by default. You set it by pressing: Everything stays the same, except that blown-out highlights might not blow-out, but only if you're lucky. This example is the one time it actually did. It only pulls-in about one more stop, and when you've lost a highlight, it usually is either further overexposed than that, or it's OK without any of these shenanigans. You can't shoot at ISO 50 or ISO 100; with highlight recovery ON, it starts at ISO 200. You can choose the Picture Style set for Live View to adjust sharpness, contrast, color saturation and white balance. If the finder suddenly seems weird, reset the little dial on the top right of the eyecup. I put this item in the MY MENU menu. You can't name them. Sadly, unlike Canon's point-and-shoots, there is no option for having new, dated, folders automatically created for you each day. Again, the Powershot and EOS teams need to have sake together more often. About 26 lenses are preloaded. If you run out of your 40 maximum, uncheck some of the lenses Canon had checked as default. No, I have no idea why this isn't presintalled at the factory as it ought to be. Don't use tilted flat targets, since the actual location of the AF sensors is never really exactly where they are marked in the finder. Every shot varies a little from shot to shot; no AF system gives the same result for each shot. I've shot a lot with a 50mm lens. I've shot commercials and travel videos with it, but I want to change cameras after using it for this long. It's an incredible camera, but there are certain things about I'd change to make it ideal for the material I wish to continue shooting and I would appreciate any advice you have on what might be a more ideal camera for what i'm continuing to work on. 1. FOCUS - I love the depth of field the 5D brings, especially for rack focus shots but I run into issues when I'm moving the camera or a subject is changing distance. So looking for some thing that still creates DOP but will allow auto focus while moving. 2. STABILIZATION - Movement with the camera creates very unstable shots and I have used the ronin and glide cams, but would like something that doesn't have as much shake. Though it captured excellent, high resolution images, it was slower and bigger and more expensive. Today the market has changed significantly, and it's clear that the market is ready for full-frame digital SLRs that can turn out high image quality.
