It is exactly the same thing as simply pressing the PTT (push to talk) and loudly saying something like “Hey, you there?” Or for that matter, just pressing PTT and slapping the radio against your leg, if you’d rather have non-verbal communication. Considering the battery case on the CXT545 is not gasketed let’s just say that in this iteration the radio is nicely splash proof, meaning it’ll work in the rain and snow so long as you store it correctly once you’re done (dry it, in other words, don’t put away wet.). They interfere in the education of our children so as to sell their particular ideologies and they run their old-boys networks to cover it all up. There is a wealth of evidence to demonstrate all of the above. 1.4.2 Corporate control: In the corporate context we see social control manifested using company rules, disciplinary measures and the ultimate threat of dismissal. Corporate control operates on the basis of offering a limited set of material and social rewards to workers in return for compliance, whilst simultaneously threatening poverty and social exile for failure to comply. 1.4.3 Government versus corporate social control: Corporate and government controls can be complimentary or contradictory, depending on the political attitudes of the government. A strong government-led social security system offsets the primary corporate control of the threat of poverty because it offers an economic safety net to the unemployed. Conversely, corporate influence can undermine government policies by reducing investment, cutting jobs and diverting tax revenue to other jurisdictions. When such obvious conflicts of interests arise, the two estates respond by making accommodations to each other. So, i n modern Western states, the corporate and government classes have reached a cosy accommodation where the power of one is used to support the initiatives of the other. It is a dangerous combination of economic power and ideological pragmatism, with the civil populations in the middle and the outside world seen simply as an opportunity for plunder, personal, political or corporate enrichment. 1.4.4 Individual control: In interpersonal relationships a dynamic of control may exist where one or more individuals attempt to maintain dominance over one or more individuals. This can be something as formal as a boss-colleague relationship or as intimate as the relationship between married partners, siblings etc. Interpersonal control operates at a more emotional level where the rewards are acceptance, stability, love, respect etc.Over the centuries, social control has changed and evolved in all cultures. I n Western society not very long ago, it was quite rare to find someone who could read ?. ?. N ow we have almost universal literacy. L ess than 150 years ago, slavery was still being practiced by Western nations. T oday forced labour has been almost entirely abolished globally. Examples abound which demonstrate the gradual liberalisation o f the methods of social control and a move away from overt violence. The art of government has been refined. Violence is now recognised as a last resort rather than the norm of day to day human and social management. Modern W estern nations have thus gradually evolved away from the use of coercion towards the more subtle methods of manipulation and the use of incentives to manage their peoples. Why has this evolution in methods of government happened. Well simply because it was realised that high densities of urban populations could no longer be controlled by the traditional feudal methods of vi olence or threats of violence. A better and more efficient alternative was needed - and manipulation was the obvious choice. This isn't to say that manipulation wasn't always in use to some extent in the past. Indeed it was. Manipulation is as old as man himself and it was in constant use in personal life and in diplomatic activity between nations. But its use as the mainstream method of domestic political social control is a relatively new phenomenon. Political manipulation is now the central pillar of R ealpolitik and has become the single most important component of social control by modern governments. In addition to their widespread use by governments, manipulative methods are also highly available to all of us. Every one of us has suffered from and probably used some manipulative action sometime in the last 24 hours, and we probably experience manipulation first hand even more frequently than this. The use of manipulation at all levels of society is now endemic and is actually becoming even more widespread as new uses and new methods of manipulation are discovered and deployed. ---o0o--- 2. Manipulation - a new method of control ? 2.1 Preamble: So what are the moral and physical implications of this new found method of social control in our daily lives. To answer these questions, we firstly need to understand exactly what it is we are discussing when we talk about human manipulation. The following is an attempt to dissect the concept by asking the fundamental question What is manipulation. To fully explore this topic we have further divided the subject into the following sub-questions and topics: - A definition of manipulation - Perceptions of manipulation - A history of manipulation - Who manipulates us? - The effects of manipulation - What makes manipulation possible? - Classifying Manipulative Methods - Evolution of Manipulation - Human Frailty and manipulation - Why is manipulation useful? - Why is manipulation now so prevalent? - Can manipulation be managed? 2.2 Towards a definition of manipulation: Manipulation is a difficult concept to define clearly and completely. A cursory search of the internet elicits a wide range of perceptions of manipulation ranging from discussions of control freak boyfriends to stories of CIA help with Pinochet's torture chambers. The word is laden with emotion and its meaning varies greatly from person to person and between different social, ethnic, psychological and political cultures and individuals. Some people would be very insulted to be labelled as manipulative and yet to others it would be considered a badge of honour. Some of our contemporary politicians and industrialists make no secret that they consider manipulation an absolute necessity and a valid method in government and business. Others see manipulation as one of the greatest evils of modern capitalism, a source of immorality and a social disease. When we take some of the emotion out of the word, then the concept of manipulation does start to become a lot more understandable and mundane, more like something that all of us have actually experienced or done ourselves to some extent. The word has strong connotations in all parts of our society. It is interesting to make a small list of how the public might define manipulation based on a simple, random internet search of the word, just to get a feeling for the differences in perception of manipulation. When this pattern is broken, 'the controller feels utterly powerless'. - In a manipulative event someone else always succeeds, voluntarily or not, to influence you to behave in a way that meets their needs and not yours. - Manipulation sometimes operates in a roundabout way, to the detriment of the original and real contact between the victim and the manipulator. - Manipulation may also be defined as 'the secret exertion of influence or the imposition of rules by an outside source which would normally be unwelcome to the victim'. - In a modern industrial management regime the definition of manipulation can be broadened to include 'the art of secretly setting objectives for an organization and its employees and using covert methods to achieve those objectives, regardless of whether they are contrary to the putative will of others.' - Manipulators seek to make a devious act of trickery seem like a simple act of gentle persuasion. It's pretty clear from just this small sample that manipulation means quite a lot of different things to different people. Some of these definitions see manipulation as totally repugnant whilst others look upon it as almost a virtue, for yet others it can be seen as just a necessary evil. In fact all realities are partially true. Manipulation can be used as a tool for good in the hands of a benefactor but it can transform into an evil weapon in the hands of a self-seeking profiteer. The use and outcomes from a manipulative act range from benign and good to vicious and evil. Historically, manipulation has been both a subject of human advancement and a source of appalling human misery. But, let us not confuse the morality of manipulation with the outcome of a manipulative action. We will discuss the morality of the manipulative technique later on. 2.2.1 Perceptions of manipulation: Mundane and Profound: In order to get closer to an understanding of manipulation we should separate the definition of manipulation into two basic sub-definitions: - Mundane manipulation - actions of close associates, requiring less skill or resources to implement. - Profound manipulation - actions of external agents, governments, business interests requiring serious skills and resources to implement. 2.2.1.1 Mundane manipulation: When some of us think about manipulation we have visions of clever politicians and strategists plotting our control. We imagine the personal effects of manipulation but we almost always attribute the manipulative plot to some faceless, clandestine, monolithic secret state organisation such as the KGB, CIA or MI6 etc. In reality, most manipulation is rather commonplace. Governments and corporations do manipulate and sometimes with appalling consequences. But we should remember that most manipulation is actually the work of people and organisations much closer to home, for instance our employers, local authorities, supermarkets and yes, even our friends and family.
