Please look closely at our pictures for specific cosmetic detail. Operationally the radio works quite well and we could not find anything not operating properly and as designed. The antenna is straight and there is no sign of battery leakage. The radio comes with a beautiful carry case and a copy of the user manual, copy of the service manual, plus a couple of radio reviews. Radio requires either a wall adapter or batteries to operate and neither the adapter or batteries are included in this sale. We don't normally deal with this radio here on Ebay. There are so many of these that it is impossible to obtain all of them, but occasionally one seems to grab my attention, either because I’ve read about it and known about it for years or simply because it occupies a unique niche in portable radio history and seems to hold a special place in many people’s hearts. It was made by Sangean and is virtually identical to their ATS-803-A which was available between 1988-1995. The only difference was that the Sangean version had a Din (European) Record Output which was omitted on the Realistic version. Well, it was a top-of-the line model for both Sangean and Radio Shack, and it was the first shortwave portable made by Sangean and offered by Radio Shack. It was a fairly early digital radio so it generated lots of interest, and typical of Sangean’s products (both then and now) it was solidly built and offered a nice user experience. Finally, since Radio Shack was such a powerhouse marketing company in their heyday there were many DX-440’s sold, while Sangean sold many worldwide which makes it pretty easy to find nice ones available for sale today. Before we get down to testing and using the DX-440 here are its vital stats: Not only did the pictures of the radio look pristine but I reasoned that an owner who kept the owner’s manual after all these years might be someone who really takes good care of things. All functions were smooth and everything sounded right. Evidently Sangean’s quality was as good back then as it is today. I am not a big fan of the slider controls which were so popular from most companies at the time but these all operated smoothly and were easy to use. It is just a joy to use. Especially after being loaded with batteries it is heavy. I did pre-read the owner’s manual before I set the clock and to learn how the memories worked but other than that operation was self-explanatory. See the DX-440 Owner’s manual here: Whereas a modern multi-band portable may use a DSP chip which contains almost all of the radio’s circuitry, the DX-440 includes a mind-boggling 44 Transistors, 7 IC’s, 50 Diodes, 7 LED’s and many more miscellaneous components. Each of the digital circuits are described in detail from theory of operation through to alignment. To perform a complete alignment of this radio is a daunting task not to be undertaken unless necessary. I checked only the IF and RF adjustments on my radio and they were right on with no adjustments needed. According to the manual the AM button selects all AM mode broadcasts from 150 KHz thru 29.9990 MHz which includes LW, MW and SW. Incidentally, many radios of the day including the Sony 2010 behave the same way, switching into SW mode (thus using the whip antenna) as you tune above 1620 KHz). The display will light up with LW, AM or SW depending on what frequency is tuned irrespective of which band switch was initially selected. For example, on AM, the knob tunes in increments of 1KHz, 10 KHz and 100 KHz depending on how fast you spin the knob. This allows you span a band quickly then home in on the exact frequency. It takes some getting used to though because you can over shoot then be stuck in a slow mode as you try to home in on the exact frequency. It sounds worse than it is and it does get easier with practice and I have to say that I have had the same feeling with many of today’s radios which do similar things. Again, a great feature but you have to get the feel of it. Not surprisingly, the Sony was a bit more sensitive on SW and its sync circuit is a big bonus not available on the DX-440 but I’ve got to say that the differences were usually not huge. But the DX-440 has overall better audio, subjectively better IF bandwidths and with its bass and treble controls it was easy to get the audio balance just right. It was quite sensitive to weak daytime AM signals and at night it seemed to do an excellent job of grabbing clear audio out of pile ups that sounded like mush on many other radios. The Signal meter does tend to over read however. I do wish they had used a larger ferrite rod in place of the thin 5” rod used here but its AM performance is still very good. The Sony offers more sophisticated tuning which feels almost analog-like with no muting or noises while tuning whereas the DX-440 mutes slightly with each tuning step, but it’s not so bad that you can’t enjoy band scanning. There is something about this radio that makes it a joy to use. I was able to tune for natural sound fairly easily and although the radio was not as rock solid as more sophisticated radios it is not bad at all by portable standards. The variable gain control is a big asset here. With today’s extremely crowded FM band in many locations these older radios can’t separate adjacent and even alternate frequencies as well as the best of today’s portables, but again, the DX-440 is very typical of its era and most of my usual catches came in very well and sounded great. Also, because it has a stereo earphone jack, even mono programs on AM will be heard through both the left and right earphones without the need for a mono to stereo adapter. The full length of the rod antenna is 52” which is great for SW but for FM I did note some weaker stations did come in a hair better when the rod was shortened from its full length. As always, the key for best FM is to orient the antenna for best reception. It is a fun radio to operate and easy to get to know. I find it very satisfying in use because of its combination of good looks, very sturdy construction and straight forward controls. It offers very good reception, pleasant sound, a nice set of easy to use features and feels like it will last another 30 years. I’m glad I finally got to own one. It works well for general shortwave listening and as an added bonus you get TWO bandwidth filters.Definitely not usual to see that feature in a radio of this price class. If you can find one pick it up and try it out. Here is a tip and if you are proficient in soldering small parts try this out.Credit goes to Mr.Marco Ciocca for clueing me in on this. This drastically improved the reception of my DX380 to the point to where I now need to use the local\dx switch to cut back the signal getting in. Please note the original fet was a 2sk291Q which I don't know if that was the MPF102 equivalent or not.But boy it sure made a big difference in my receive. Check with them concerning pricing and availability at this time.A link to their website is belowThe Realistic DX160 was made sometime back in the middle to late 70's by GRE Corporation in Japan for RadioShack. Not a digital tuning radio and overall circuitThe am broadcast band is it's strongest point with shortwave being a little tricky due to the single bandwidth.Beware though with it's beingI definitely have seen worse.AVC or AGC-Automatic gain control-regulates automatically the signal input to your radio's audio section so you don't get a blast of sound if the signal suddenly increases. BFO-A beat frequency oscillator-What you use to tune into SSB signals with. IF Filters- intermediate frequency filters-A electronic component in the radio that limits the bandwidth of your radio so you don't hear 30 stations from different frequencies at the same time.Commonly seen as term of 5 khz filter or 2.4 khz filter. Commonly used bandwidths are 6 khz and 2.4 khz.All shortwave Broadcasters are in bands which are given to them in 5 khz increments. Thus a 10 khz filter is going to let in a lot of audio from an adjacent station 5 khz up from where you are tuned to. SSB-SingleSideband-A mode of transmitting with reduced carrier or no carrier.Hams and utility stations use this quite often as it saves on bandwidth and can be heard somewhat farther than normal am mode. There are 2 kinds of SSB -Upper sideband USB - and Lower sideband LSB. SWBC -Shortwave broadcast- used in terms of SWBC bands or International shortwave broadcasters as in VOA. CW- continous wave-What is called Morse code.Used by hams and utility stations such as ships at sea. Mode-type of transmission-can be am,ssb,cw,fax, rtty or fm. RTTY-Radio TeleType-A digital form of transmitting by hams and those pesky utility stations Utility stations-No these are NOT the local power or water companies:) Rather they are not SWBC's such as the Voice of America but private or governmental stations and services that transmit on the shortwave bands. They can be found just about anywhere and some even have the guts and or ignorance to transmit in legal SWBC bands on top of regular stations such as Radio Jordan. They are more commonly referred to as utes These are just a few of the terms used in day to day shortwave radio stuff. For a more complete SW dictionary I suggest the Passport to World Band Radio book or the PWBR as we call it. I take no responsibility for invalidated warranties. This Mod also enables the speaker while you are scanning. You will be surprised on how much you have missed. I have done the mod and it is real easy. If you don't like it change it back. I got the mod from a unknown source, so it has not yet been tested. I have heard of no complaint or problems. The Mod is so easy all you need is a Phillips screwdriver and 5min's. It's that easy. Ok here it is: 1) Remove the batteries from the unit and turn it upside down so the antenna is facing away from you. 2) Remove the six screws and remove the cover (be careful that you don't break the antenna wire) 3) Okay so far so good. Now locate the 8-pin cable. 4) Remove it carefully. Not so bad now huh? Fine tuning the Sangean 803A. The instructions are as detailed as my brain permits of. The tools required are a small-to-medium Philips or posidrive screwdriver, a small soldering iron, some solder and a means of removing surplus solder (e.g a solder sucker or a few inches of desoldering braid). 1. Make sure that you have a note of any preset frequencies you have programmed into the memories. Turn the radio off. Remove all external connections (e.g. headphones, external power, external aerial) from the radio. Close down and clip down the radio's own whip aerial. 2. Take the radio to a well-lit worksurface. Put something on the worksurface to prevent damage to it or to the radio. Put the radio face-down on the table so that the base of the radio is nearest to you. Remove the battery compartment door and then remove the batteries. Unscrew the six screws which retain the back panel of the case. Five are down recesses in the back panel at the top left, top right, bottom right and bottom-center-right. The sixth is in the left corner of the battery compartment. Try to leave the screws in their respective holes. You can feel when the screws have been unscrewed enough when they don't seem to be coming out anymore. Gently free the back panel from the rest of the radio case but don't try to pull it away from the radio. There is an awkward wire connecting the whip aerial to the rest of the radio. The row to work on is the row furthest from you. Calling Page 1 2 these, from left to right, 1, 2 and 3, use the solder removing gear to remove all solder from pad 3. This should leave pin 3 visibly isolated from the surrounding circuit board. Next, solder pins 1 and 2 together - probably most easily done by melting the solder on both pins by spreading the soldering iron across the two and then introducing some extra solder to bridge them - the sort of thing we usually do by mistake. 4. That's it. Replace the back, taking care not to catch the awkward wire in the case - or anywhere else. Do up the six screws evenly, i.e. do them up until they are all just starting to resist you, checking that the back panel is fully onto the rest of the case as you go, then give each screw a little bit more of a turn. Don't leave them loose, but don't do them any tighter than that. I'm sure that I needn't point out that the Establishment would tear you (and your warranty) limb from limb for fiddling inside their creation - particularly as it was particularly short-sighted of them not to have done this themselves - but there, hind-sight is a wonderful thing. Do remember that the fine tune is always in use on AM, so at its extreme you'll be 5kHz off the indicated frequency. Talking of indicated frequency, you might find that stations appear to be on tune when the BFO control is slightly off its mid-position. Well no synthesiser is dead on frequency - although my Sangeans are within 200Hz of true. The point is that this fine tune lets you receive stations optimally and this won't always be on the centre frequency. One of the best features of having a fine tune is that a whistle interfering with a station you're tuned directly onto can usually be nulled out by using the fine tune to slip slightly off frequency. Each time you press SW, the receiver jumps to the next- highest band. Subject: DX Operating Tip Here is an undocumented way of quickly switching between two frequencies in the shortwave bands. The procedure requires only a single key press instead of the two presses normally required to recall frequencies previously stored in memory. Here's how to do it: 1. Press the SW key. 2. Enter the frequency of the first station. You can enter any shortwave frequency even though it is not in the band displayed. 3. Press the AM key. 4. Enter the frequency of the second station. You can enter any shortwave frequency even though it is not in the band displayed. 5. To return to the first frequency, press the SW key. 6. To return to the second frequency, press the AM key. Page 3 4 This shortcut lets you toggle between two shortwave stations with a single key press. Incidently, both frequencies are retained in memory so the next time you power up the radio they are still available by simply pressing the SW or AM key. Subject: Re: DX-440 Doc's needed To turn off the alarm: Press TIMER so that STANDBY does not appear on the display. Subject: Re: DX-390; mods to make it not wrap on band boundaries. Is it possible to modify a DX-390 so that it won't keep wrapping around and around the two ends of a particular band in 'search' mode. I'm not familiar with the DX-390, but have the older DX-440. Subject: Re: SSB on DX-440 I've never quite gotten the hang of tuning in SSB on my DX-440. I look for all these great utility signals, but can never find them. On the rare occassion I do find them, I can never quite tune in the garbled voices. Can anyone please help me. What am i doing wrong. Is there a procedure or steps i should follow in order to gain optimum reception results. Many thanks. I tune SSB on my DX440 by first adjusting the BFO to the zero-beat setting by tuning WWV, turning on the BFO, and adjusting the BFO setting to the lowest note (no tone). On my DX440, this setting is slightly right of center on the BFO adjustment.
