Rich D. 5.0 out of 5 stars The trail info, the maps and the book are just what one needs to plan that adventure to the whites. The book now has new info that captures all the changes since the major washout from Irene in 2011. Lots of trails were impacted and the book has the new info. The write ups are well written and key to planning out a day hike, overnighter, a presidential traverse, a pemi traverse, or the dreaded Owl's Head death march. If you hike the whites and have just one book to pick from, this is the one. Steve Smith can sign it if you visit his book shop in Lincoln; great guy and an ambassador to the Whites. They are much more durable in the range of weather you can encounter and resistant to sweaty hands. They can also be wiped clean if you drop them in mud or spill food on them.Wouldn't these be enough. I went with a used copy and bought it anyway. Boy, am I happy I did. This book is amazing. The maps alone are worth the price. The book is small enough to carry in a pack (which was a concern) and the trail descriptions are great. I am heading to the White Mountains in 4 days and I have already marked the hikes I want to take and found them on the maps. I can't recommend this guide enough. I'm sure it will perform even better on the trail. It has detailed descriptions of all trails in the White Mountains National Forest and lists information such as book time, distance, and elevation gain. I have found the information to be up-to-date and accurate. Along with the included maps, this book has become an essential part of my process of planning hikes. I recently used it to plan an amazing 23 mile dayhike to Bondcliff, Mt. Bond, and West Bond.http://gizmakina.com/depo/sayfaresim/bounty-hunter-gold-digger-metal-detector-manual.xml This book has been invaluable in my quest to summit all of NH's 4000 footers. One important thing to note is that the included maps, while a great planning tool, are paper. Thus, make sure you also have a set of waterproof, tear-proof maps to pack on your bag when you hike.We recently started doing the 48 4,000 footers and wanted something that we could always resort to for information. This package was the perfect solution, not only does it have information about every trail in the book, the maps that come with it are awesome and really helpful. The book has very descriptive instructions on how to find trailheads too which is very convenient. I recommend this book for anyone that is doing multiple hikes in the whites, great resource. Every time we hike we bring this book with us. It's easy to use as well. The book has very general trail info, but lacks any specifics. You'll still need something else to go by or you'll be going blind. I was hoping for springs, campsites, stream crossings. The colorful maps are loaded with information. I am considering the waterproof set, because I am concerned that the recycled paper may not hold up well. The guide is well written with lots of useful information, I would not think about hiking anything but a tourist trail in the Whites without consulting the Guide first.I guess in this instance I'm not the most objective reviewer. But this book is truly perfect. Really! I swear! This most recent guide is fabulous, as always. The trail descriptions are accurate, very detailed, and the three included maps (front and back) are easy to read and follow. I used them just a few weeks ago during a 5-day trip in the Whites, and I was very pleased. There is a lot of general info, as well, aside from the trail descriptions - history (natural and local), weather, hiking safety info, etc. The book is large, so I ended up copying only the pages I wanted to carry along in my pack.http://schlammatlas.de/en/node/27476 Perhaps they might want to think about converting to a ring binder book, as the CT Blue Trails books do: Plus you can insert and keep notes, clippings, other info securely within the book. My only recommendation is that they just do away with the paper maps and start including the waterproof ones with the guide instead. So basically you might end up re-buying the maps. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy just includes the waterproof ones with their guides, which is smart. I'd prefer not to have duplicate maps. Anyway, this is THE definitive White Mountain guide. Accept no imitations! Also includes information for trails if you visit them during the winter months. The only thing that could make this better is if the 3 maps that came with it were weatherproofed. If your'e planning to do some hikes this region that's a must. The maps are also very nice.Accurately research and easy to read. Four maps included.Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. This guidebook is the most trusted resource for the hiking trails of the magnificent White Mountain National Forest and surrounding regions. The thirtieth edition has been thoroughly updated and revised with accurate descriptions of over 500 trails, six topographic maps with trail segment mileage, trip planning and safety information, and a checklist of New England's Four-Thousand Footers. Now with an easier to navigate interior layout and icons, trip planning is a cinch. With expert advice and trail coverage, this comprehensive guide is the perfect companion for planning a hike. Whether it's a day trip to stunning waterfalls, a backpacking adventure in the Great Gulf Wilderness, or Mount Washington, the White Mountain Guide is the only resource you need for your adventures in the White Mountains. Now, I have spent many, many dollars trying to get the very lightest gear, so that I can enjoy hiking to the fullest. Why do I have to lug a White Mountain Guide that is unnecessarily weighty. My conclusion is: most of the trails haven't moved much, though some names have changed; maybe I'll just use my new maps and my old guide. And while I'm on the subject of maps -- the paper maps that come with the Guide are useless on the trail; the average life expectancy of a paper map in foul weather is about 10 seconds, as I have learned through bitter experience. My advice would be to spend the extra money and get the latest AMC plastic maps (which are ALSO much larger now, compared to the petite yet fully functional AMC plastic maps of yesteryear). The information is reorganized in a way which I think is far superior to the previous versions. The guide comes with 6 maps printed on 3 sheets. The colors on the maps are better to me than the previous style and there are some good detail updates. For example, the Bondcliff Trail and The Lincoln Woods Trails have the current names and terminations. I really like the way the hike statistics are organized. They are in neat tables. The various trails linking different peaks also have tabular stats. And even better, the various hikes for the geographical regions are rated easy to difficult. As a hike leader, I think the amount of information and the clean way it is organized will be very helpful in planning the hike as well as communicating the relevant information to prospective attendees. Props to the editor Steve Smith. Top shelf work. If you're in Lincoln, his shop is the Mountain Wanderer. My older White Mountains guides had tyvex maps that were tear- and waterproof. This is just basically printer paper. Boo, AMC. Thanks for the updated trail info, but here's for the downgraded quality. This should be an orienteering tool, not somethong from Kinko's. I have guide books from a hundred years ago that have been carried for hundreds of miles and they have held together. This is basically a Fodors, not a backpacker guide. Weak paper covers. Boo. You killed the majic of the Trail Guide. They are in fact very fragile. The included picture shows the wear and tear from the ten mile Baldface Circle loop on a sunny day with the map being folded to the relevant section, and stored in the hip belt pocket of my pack. That being said, I LIKE these maps. I didn't have time to scan and print the relevant sections and pack copies out in a ziploc bag, which is what I recommend. In lieu of that, I would pair these maps with the National Geographic map set of the White Mountains, much more durable, but also cluttered, which makes reading elevation a chore. A more recent version than the 30th edition may be desired as I ran the wrong way down the falling waters trail onto a spur trail to shining rock. The spur wasn't on the map, and I had myself a fun little class 4 scramble down to the bottom of shining rock and then back up. The book looked great from the little I used it. Hope this helps! They are in fact very fragile. Hope this helps!I read a lot of reviews that took issue with the maps included with the book. The set included with the book is on paper. It WOULD be nice if maybe AMC would consider just selling the book for those that already have the maps but that's a quibble. Hiking in the White Mountains is no joke.A prior version of this book was our guide. As soon as I got home, I purchased this version (the newest edition) which came with 3 maps that together cover most of the White Mountains. If you're looking for the most up to date information about the White Mountain area with trail descriptions and contact information for the campgrounds, cabins and huts in the area, this is the book for you. You might be well served by printing a different scale map of your specific area of interest, but you can get by very well with just the maps that come with this guide. I'll be counting heavily on this guide for my trip back into the area next summer. With how well and complete this guide is, I'll have no problems.I have used the guide for 5 trail hikes so far and the information for each trail was current and correct. The 3 topo maps provided are excellent to throw in my pack before setting off. The guidebook itself may be a bit large to carry in your pack but most trail maps can now be downloaded to a smartphone from a variety of apps for offline use. This guidebook is a must for any hiker exploring the White Mountains of New Hampshire. And as all distances, grades and distances are given for every trail, easy to establish what trail to tackle with a mixed age group. Would definately recommend. Michael GourlayHowever unlike the many other guides we have for the Adirondacks, this one does not have the equivalent distances in Metric. It's a good idea to buy the addtional maps which are waterproof.Excellent guide to the whites. This 30th edition has been thoroughly updated and revised post-Tropical Storm Irene, with accurate descriptions of more than 500 trails, as well as trip planning advice, safety information, and a checklist of New Hampshire’s 4,000-footers. New to this edition are at-a glance icons for suggested hikes and redesigned, easier to-follow statistics for all trails, charting cumulative distance, elevation, and time between waypoints. This boxed set also contains six pull-out topographic maps, updated to reflect the latest trail openings, closings, and reroutings. Redesigned with bolder, clearer colors and GPS-charted by AMC’s cartography department, these maps include trail-segment mileage; hut, lodge, camping, and shelter locations; wilderness-area boundaries; AMC shuttle stops, and more. Whether you’re planning a day trip to stunning waterfalls, a backpacking trek through the Great Gulf Wilderness, or a section hike along the Appalachian Trail, the White Mountain Guide is your quintessential resource for adventure in the White Mountains. The White Mountains are particularly dangerous due to weather. The hiked the Presidential Traverse and this book helped me familiarize myself with the trails before we started the hike, helping us be safe and prepared. People come from all around the world to hike, backpack, climb and train for mountaineering expeditions in “The Whites” which are known for their rugged beauty and scenic trails. White Mountain Guide 30th Edition Completeness Ease of Use Currency Reliability Map Quality The Hiker's Bible The Appalachian Mountain Club's White Mountain Guide is the most comprehensive and in-depth guide to hiking and backpacking in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest. The guide includes 6 topographic maps for planning hikes and includes detailed driving instructions to get to trailheads. Shop Now In print for 110 years, the new 30th edition of the White Mountain Guide contains descriptions of some 20 new trails that have been added to the over 600 trails, many interconnected, that make up the White Mountains trail system. Dozens of other trail descriptions and directions have also been updated in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene in 2011, which heavily damaged and temporarily closed some trails. The new guide has also been reformatted with easy-to-read graphic icons so you can quickly see whether a trail is child-friendly, dog-friendly, the type of terrain it crosses, scenic highlights, and the best times of year to hike or snowshoe it. Each trail description in the guide includes the distance, elevation gain, and estimated time required to hike a trail, in each direction so you can quickly plan hike durations and estimate route difficulty. The trails are also cross-referenced with AMC map locations (new this edition) which make it much easier to find the trails in the paper map set included in the boxed edition. ( A companion tyvek waterproof 6 map set is also available separately and strongly recommended for carrying on hikes. ) Also new this year is a large format and waterproof map called the White Mountain National Forest and Guide that depicts the entire White Mountain hiking trail system, with the exception of a few very remote outliers. If you only want to carry one map on your hikes, this is the one to bring. It’s a topographic map that shows how all of the trails intersect and includes printed segment mileages so you can see how long they are at a glance. They really did a nice job on it. I bought two. How to Use the White Mountain Guide The best way to plan a hike or a backpacking trip in the Whites Mountains is to consult The White Mountain Guide which contains a wealth of information not found on maps of the area. This includes driving instructions to hard-to-find trailheads, historical facts, search and rescue contact information, gear advice, and a wealth of information about the landmarks and views you’ll encounter when you hike along a trail. I often take a photo of the White Mountain Guides’ trail descriptions with my cell phone when I take hikes because they are really useful to refer to on the move, without carrying the “bible” in my backpack. If you’re new to the Whites or just sampling the most scenic hikes available, the guide lists suggested hikes at the beginning of each chapter. These are labeled and sorted by difficulty and they’re all gems. The guide also lists all the available campsites along the trails and explains any backcountry camping restrictions if backpacking is your thing. If you’re interested in hiking the White Mountain 4,000 footers or all of the New England 4,000 footers in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, the White Mountain Guide provides checklists of all the peaks, trail information for climbing them, and detailed information about applying for the 4,000 footer award and patch. Conclusion The White Mountain Guide is an essential information source for anyone interested in exploring the hiking trails, peaks, waterfalls, campsites, and ski trails that crisscross the 796,000 acre White Mountain National Forest and hiking trail system. If you own a previous edition, it’s worth updating to the 30th edition which is better structured and easier to reference. If you’re new to the Whites, there’s no better trail guide that’s as comprehensive, up-to-date, and reliable as the White Mountain Guide. Also, be sure to pick up the new waterproof White Mountain National Forest Map which depicts most of the trail system in a single map and is very handy to have on the trail. What about the 21st Edition. Last of the hardcovers! (OK, that was my dad’s) So is it considered OK to transfer all the dates you hiked certain peaks from one edition to the next. Just seems strange that as we get lighter in our gear, the guidebook is turning into a brick. It’s larger than the AT guide book for crying out loud. Just Kidding. I’ll likely pick up a copy and the new map sounds great. Thanks. Reply Nick September 30, 2017 at 12:43 pm I still have my 22nd edition (1979). The format was smaller then—6? x 3.5? x.75?—and fewer pages. The corners were rounded for pack-toting friendliness. Didn’t think twice about taking them on a hike. Now, i copy the relevant pages and take just those. It would be nice if AMC offered an option to get the Guide with the waterproof maps included rather than having to buy them separately. Reply Earl Gilbert October 2, 2017 at 7:02 am I just got purchased the book and the waterproof map from Amazon. The map is as good as the one I have from map adventures. The map from AMC actually has the Grafton Notch Loop trail on it. The Guide is very well done. Reply Philip Werner October 2, 2017 at 8:00 am Look carefully at the new map. Bet you see some new trails not listed on the Map Adventures map. Of course, they were there before. Still. Reply Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published.
