quiet american study guideGreene drew upon his own experiences in Indochina as a war correspondent for The Times and Le Figaro in the early 1950s. While he used his observations as a basis for the novel, Greene has claimed several times that The Quiet American is not intended to reveal or prove any historical truths. Some critics have floated the possibility that Greene based the character of Alden Pyle on CIA officer Edward Landsdale, who served as an uncredited consultant on the 1958 film adaptation of the novel. Additionally, the prevalence of opium in the novel also proved to be problematic for many readers. By the 1960s, however, every Western reporter had a copy The Quiet American and carried it around while writing about the region. The Quiet American gained both popularity and criticism as more Americans were deployed to fight in Vietnam. In 2007, an article in TIME magazine detailed the journey that Greene fans take to Saigon to follow the paths of the characters in The Quiet American. The Vietnamese government and local businesses have taken advantage of Greene-fueled tourism, and street vendors vendors on the Rue Catinat, the setting of Fowler's flat in the novel, sell hundreds of copies of The Quiet American every week. The Quiet American has also been adapted into two films, once in 1958 and once in 2002.GradeSaver, 30 January 2015 Web. Greene was a heavy drinker and a devout Catholic from an early age—two qualities that he passed on to most of his protagonists. Greene studied at Oxford, where he experimented with Communism, a doctrine that he ultimately rejected. He was lonely and depressed at Oxford, but devoted himself to writing poetry and short fiction. After graduating, he worked as a journalist for a variety of English and Irish publications. His first successful novel was his fourth, Stamboul Train (1932). An “adventure yarn,” Stamboul Train was highly popular, and inspired Greene to write a long series of skillful but “lowbrow” entertainments, such as Our Man in Havana (1958) and The Third Man (1949). In his early 30s, Greene was recruited to work for MI6, the United Kingdom’s espionage agency (the rough counterpart of the CIA in America). As an MI6 agent, Greene traveled to many countries around the world—including Cuba, Liberia, Mexico, Vietnam, and Haiti—and reported on the state of society. Though Greene was rarely in any serious danger during these missions, they inspired him to write novels of espionage and intrigue, including The Quiet American. Greene’s masterpiece, The Power and the Glory (1940), was inspired by his travels through Mexico. Greene lived an exceptionally long life, and continued to write prolifically well into his 80s. He was often considered a contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature, but he never won it (after his death, it was revealed that Greene had been nominated for the prize four times). He died in 1991 of leukemia. Throughout the 19th century, the country now known as Vietnam was a part of French Indochina, a huge colonial territory spanning Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and parts of China. The French influence on Vietnam can still be seen in the region today, particularly in the city of Saigon, where The Quiet American takes place.http://alt-1c.ru/userfiles/cytoscape-manual.xml In 1945, the northern areas of Vietnam, organized by the charismatic Communist leader Ho Chi Minh, declared independence from French Indochina. Over the next decade and a half, the French military, already severely weakened by World War II, tried to hang on to its colonial outposts in Vietnam—a source of enormous wealth for France. It was believed that the rise of Communism in French Indochina would start a “chain reaction” (alluded to several times in The Quiet American ) of Communist regimes in the region—a hypothesis known as the “Domino Theory” in the United States. Because the government of the United States opposed the spread of Communism in the Third World, it sent military aid to the French forces in Vietnam. This process began during the early years of the Eisenhower regime—a time during which Greene was living in Vietnam, reporting on the status quo. Conspicuously absent from the political conflict in Indochina was the United Kingdom, which had lost the vast majority of its colonial territories during World War II. It’s possible to read The Quiet American as an allegory for the historical changes in the world during the early 1950s: the United Kingdom (symbolized by Thomas Fowler) was losing its power, America (symbolized by Alden Pyle) was quickly becoming the world’s preeminent superpower, and Vietnam (symbolized, arguably, by Phuong Hei) was struggling to decide what path to choose for itself. Even Greene would have been amazed to see how the conflict in Vietnam grew in the two decades after he published The Quiet American, however—the United States became the sole foreign power still fighting in Vietnam, fighting a long, bloody war with the Northern Vietnamese forces. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1900) offers perhaps the most famous example of this archetype via the character of Colonel Kurtz, who “goes native” when he travels to the Congo.http://www.raumboerse-luzern.ch/mieten/hornady-pacific-366-manual Kurtz, the product of a luxurious upbringing and a fine education, may have influenced Greene’s portrayal of Alden Pyle. It’s worth noting that Greene, a lifelong Catholic, is profoundly influenced by the teachings of the Holy Bible: his account of guilt, forgiveness, and the self-inflicted punishment of sin emanates from a belief in the fundamental tenets of Catholicism. The Quiet American also reflects the growing number of dark, morally ambiguous spy novels that emerged in the years following World War II. In these works, good and evil aren’t easily distinguishable, and the protagonist’s allies often devolve into enemies before becoming allies once again. Arguably the master of this genre is John le Carre (like Greene, an MI6 agent turned novelist), whose books include The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. To date, more than 60 of Greene’s works have been adapted for the screen ( The Quiet American alone has been adapted twice!), many of them featuring screenplays written by Greene himself. Green was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for the 1948 film The Fallen Idol, adapted from his short story, The Basement Room. Greene’s greatest cinematic achievement is arguably his screenplay for The Third Man (1949), Carol Reed’s classic film noir. The film won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival and is often listed as one of the greatest films ever made. His writing style—short, declarative sentences, drenched in irony and world-weariness—became so well-known that in 1949, the British magazine the New Statesman held a Graham Greene contest, in which contestants were asked to submit brief parodies of Greene’s writing style. Greene himself submitted a parody of his own style under the pseudonym N. Wilkinson. For his efforts, he was awarded second place. This study guide contains the following sections:He meets a young American idealist named Alden Pyle, who is a student of York Harding. Unlike most Americans, Pyle is thoughtful and soft-spoken.Pyle dances with Fowler's live-in lover, Phuong. Only twenty years old, Phuong is considered the most beautiful girl in Saigon. Her sister's goal in life is to marry Phuong off to a rich European; she does not like Fowler because he is married. Some vulgar Americans and Brits who have been drinking too much go off to the House of Five Hundred Women. Fowler rescues him. Later that night Pyle seems protective of Phuong. Pyle travels there to tell him that he has been in love with Phuong since the first night he saw her, and that he wants to marry her. They make a toast to nothing and Pyle leaves the next day. Fowler gets a letter from Pyle thanking him for being so nice about Phuong. The letter is annoying because of Pyle's complete confidence that Phuong will choose to marry him. Meanwhile, Fowler's editor wants him to transfer back to England. She chooses Fowler, her lover of two years. She does not know that he is up for a transfer. Fowler writes his wife to ask for a divorce in front of Phuong. They end up captive in a tower, and spend an extraordinary night talking about everything from sex to God. As they escape, Pyle saves Fowler's life. Fowler goes back to Saigon where he lies to Phuong that his wife will divorce him. Pyle exposes the lie and Phuong moves in with Pyle. Fowler investigates Pyle's activities more closely and finds out that Pyle is importing military supplies into Viet Nam from the United States. Fowler goes into the war zone and does some serious reporting. Pyle comes over later for drinks and they talk about his upcoming marriage to Phuong. Later that week there is a terrible explosion and many innocents are killed. Fowler puts the pieces together and realizes that Pyle is behind the bombing. Fowler decides that Pyle must be eliminated. Fowler takes part in a murder plot against Pyle. Although the police believe that Fowler is involved, they cannot prove anything. Fowler goes back to Phuong as if nothing had ever happened. All rights reserved. How is Pyle different than the usual picture of an American? Do you believe that's true. Was it true in Fowler's life? Do you think he is a realist or a cynic. Use passages from The Quiet American to support your ideas. Why doesn't she get a chance to express her desires. How do you think her character could have been better developed, or do you like the depiction the way it. All rights reserved. Talk about a bad day. Oh, and welcome to Thomas Fowler's life. You see, Mr. Fowler is not a happy camper. He's a middle-aged correspondent from England who's come to Vietnam to report on the Indochina War.and let's just say he's not exactly enthused about his job. On top of that, Fowler cheated on his wife back home in England, but she won't divorce him. She's very religious. He? Not so much. He failed at marriage, didn't do too well at adultery either, and at this point in his career doesn't care if he fails as a reporter. A cynical chap? You bet! Cheeky? Yeah, sometimes. Now he's taken up with a young mistress named Phuong and just wants to spend his remaining years living easy and untroubled by anybody's problems. Such a life might seem lonely to you, but it's the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to him. When it all comes down to it, Fowler would prefer to mind his own business and be responsible for no one. He reminds us a little of Luke Skywalker's uncle, Owen, in Star Wars. Owen was all about the Skywalkers not getting involved, especially in idealistic crusades. That's Fowler, dead on. He reports on the war, when he must, but he won't take sides. Getting involved is against his creed. He's soft-spoken and a likeable enough fellow, but he makes quite a mess of Fowler's world. And how? Pyle falls in love with Phuong and woos her away from Fowler. That's strike one. Strike two: Pyle is not so secretly an intelligence agent aiding a terrorist in hopes of bringing peace to the land. That's strike three as far as Fowler is concerned. What happens next won't surprise you. Published in 1955, Graham Greene's The Quiet American was controversial in its time and remains so to this day. It's obviously an anti-war novel, but it's also arguably anti-American. The New York Times called the novel's presentation of America an annoyingly crude and trite caricature. Pyle seems to embody U.S. foreign policy as Fowler sees it: naively idealistic about its goals, dangerously ignorant about the places it seeks to help, and innocently sure of its rightness, control, and moral superiority. Or maybe Fowler's just really miffed at Pyle for stealing his girlfriend. Either way, you don't have to share Fowler's grumpy distaste of all things American to appreciate the human drama of love and war at the center of the story. And controversy aside, the novel remains well regarded in the States and elsewhere. Michael Caine received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of Thomas Fowler in the 2002 film. Brendan Frasier of the Mummy movies played Pyle. Fear not: there are no mummies in The Quiet American, quietly buried or otherwise. If the critical representation of American policy in The Quiet American sounds familiar to you, there's a reason. Opponents of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere have made the same basic claim. To them, as apparently to Thomas Fowler, the United States means well but ends up doing more harm than good when it intervenes in the affairs of other countries. After all, Fowler's wholly negative point of view isn't universally shared. The latest Captain America movies had their subversive criticisms of military power, but they hardly turned Cap into a clueless villain like Alden Pyle. Quite the opposite, in fact—they don't call it a super hero movie for nothing. Aside from its legacy in anti-war literature, The Quiet American is an intense espionage thriller and a poignant reflection on human weakness. You don't have to agree with the narrator's politics or cynicism to get wrapped up in the novel's drama of love and war, honesty and deception, loyalty and betrayal. Well, don't just sit there. Thomas Fowler disliked taking sides, but we at Shmoop don't share his sentiment. Take a look and tell us where you stand. Is Fowler right or wrong about Pyle. Is Pyle representative of American policy, a caricature of it, or something else entirely. It was critical of Greene's friendliness towards Communism. That would have been a big issue in the 50s.Undeniably, the public was not in the mood for a film about an American operative aiding and abetting a terrorist attack.By Hook, By Crook In The Guardian, Zadie Smith argues that Graham Greene's novels make him one of the greatest journalists. Bang! Boom! The quality improves as the video goes on.The BBC explores that question. Greene in youth The Alden Pyle version. He doesn't find Pyle, but he does run into Phuong, who's also anxious about Pyle's whereabouts. He invites her in to his place and tries to pass the time by probing her about her relationship with Pyle. Someone arrives—a Vietnamese police officer. He asks for them both to come to the French police station. At the station, an officer named Vigot interrogates Fowler about his knowledge of Pyle and his previous relationship with Phuong. Pyle, he learns, is dead. He tells Phuong the sad news after they return to his place. She spends the night. The next day Fowler and Phuong go to get her belongings from Pyle's place. There they find Vigot. The officer allows them to gather her things. Fowler takes a book belonging to Pyle, a work by York Harding, a major influence on Pyle's thinking. That's what he tells himself and others. We sense he's holding back the whole truth. The narration switches to the time Pyle and Phuong first met. Phuong and Fowler are at the Continental hotel bar having a drink. Another reporter named Granger shows up drunk. After some awkward talk, they all decide to go elsewhere for fun. Fowler and Phuong go to a restaurant. Pyle goes with Granger to a naughty place called House of the Five Hundred Girls, but Fowler, sensing Pyle's innocence, fetches him and brings him to the restaurant with them. Fowler decides it time to see the war up close and heads north. Unexpectedly, Pyle shows up there, apparently having come all the way and into danger just to tell Fowler than he plans to court Phuong. He wants to be respectful and fair, though, so he'll wait to make a move until Fowler returns to Saigon. Fowler, of course, is not pleased. He's still married, so he can't exactly take Phuong with him. Fortunately for Fowler, Phuong declines Pyle's marriage proposal and Fowler convinces his employer to let him stay. Fowler next runs into Pyle at a Caodaist festival in Tanyin. Fowler and Pyle intend to return to Saigon separately, but Pyle's car isn't working, so Fowler kindly gives him a lift. On the way back, they run out of gas, most of it having been stolen. They take shelter in a watchtower but have to flee when it's attacked. In their escape, Fowler injures his leg and Pyle saves his life. Phuong tends to Fowler when he returns. He tells her that his wife has written a response to him and might grant him the divorce. Phuong is pleased, but she'll soon learn that this is a lie and leave him for Pyle. Meanwhile, Fowler learns through a contact that Pyle is involved in some plot involving plastics. His suspicions are confirmed when he and Pyle are both witnesses of a major bombing of a civilian area and Pyle admits that the attack should not have happened the way it did. Fowler had tried to warn Pyle against this sort of thing. Now, seeing that Pyle is shocked but unremorseful and undeterred, he decides he has to do something. As Paul Harvey would say, now you know the rest of the story. Well, almost. Fowler plots with Mr. Heng, the man who gave him evidence of Pyle's suspicious behavior, to have Pyle dealt with. Fowler knows this means an assassination. The plan works. The police never discover the exact nature of his participation. Phuong returns to him and his wife finally agrees to a divorce. Fowler would be happy man if he were not now nagged by guilt. Cambridge; Port Melbourne, Vic: Cambridge University Press To learn more about how to request items watch this short online video.
