Would never recommend. It is an excellent little handbook, containing Benedict's Rule; articles written by other oblates and monks to help round out our understanding; and readings for each day of the week. Unfortunately, the book hasn't been properly proofread, so that some words are missing, others have the wrong meaning, and there are typos which are irritating while reading.http://www.nam.org.np/userfiles/capitalism-2-manual.xml

Overall, a very good book, spoilt by poor proofreading. It is a great primer for one who wants to follow the spirituality of St. Benedict and his sons and daughters. The book gives a history of the Benedictine Order and the various reforms that have occurred over time, including the history of the Cistercian reform and Order. It chapters on the Rule of St. Benedict, the tools of Benedictine Spirituality, the Benedictine experience of God, how to live this spirituality in community, in solitude, as an oblate, and in the world. It also includes the brief biographies of various saints and holy men and women who have followed the Benedictine spirituality. It includes morning and evening prayers for those who do not have another prayer regime. It comes with the Benedictine rule, and numerous short essays giving one insight into living the rule. The only reason for four stars is that none of the information ties back into Abbeys or monasteries in America, it seems the history stops at Europe. And I wish it had better examples of balancing the prayer life with living in the world. It was easy to understand and follow.Lots of informative and clear articles keeping it straightforward. This was a gift a little embarrassing.Contains the whole of the Rule of Benedict and shome good study for those interested in the Benedictine way of life. Anthony Marett-Crosby, O.S.B., of Ampleforth Abbey in England, the book covers spirituality, history, and other related topics in several short essays by various international authors, many of whom are Benedictines or Cistercians (or people very interested in them), Oblates or scholars. The general reader will find this book to be of interest, and the academic scholar can use it as an introduction to the study of Benedictinism. Benedict (Barry was an abbot of Ampleforth Abbey). The Rule makes up the first part of six. Part two is a collection of essays on Benedictine spirituality, covering Demetrius Dumm, O.S.B., of St. Vincent’s Archabbey in Pennsylvania ”Lectio Divina” by Fr. Michael Casey, O.C.S.O., from Australia Part three is entitled “The Benedictine Experience of God” and includes a very brief Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer in a two-week cycle created by Fr. Oswald McBride, O.S.B. of Ampleforth Abbey, who also collected some Benedictine prayers. Rev. Robert Atwell, an Anglican priest, provides a list of some of the famous Benedictines and other famous monastic fathers and mothers along with short biographies on them. The Irish monk Colman O’Clabaigh, O.S.B., of Glenstal Abbey presents a list and description of Benedictine holy places. The first essay by Fr. Columba Stewart, O.S.B., of St. John’s Abbey in Minnesota discusses community. Sr. Maria Boulding, O.S.B. of Stanbrook Abbey in England, presents an essay on solitude. Anglican priest Rev. Dwight Lonenecker’s essay is on what an Oblate is. Esther de Waal, an Oblate in England who has written several books on Benedictine spirituality, contributes an essay on how to follow the Rule of St. Benedict while living in the world. Joel Rippinger, O.S.B., a monk of Marmion Abbey in Illinois, Fr. Dominic Milroy, O.S.B., a monk of Ampleforth Abbey, and Fr. Nivard Kinsella, O.C.S.O, a monk in Ireland. Terrence Kardong, O.S.B., a monk of Assumption Abbey in North Dakota and the editor of the American Benedictine Review. Many of the essays feature endnotes or a bibliography. Oblate novices will enjoy this book as an introduction to their new way of life, and those who are already Oblates can utilize it as a refresher course. The two-week cycle of Morning and Evening Prayers is helpful to those very much on the go; if they are traveling and cannot take the larger breviaries with them, this is a good option. There is also part of the Benedictine Jubilee medal depicted on the front cover; the side has the image of St. Benedict on it. Some color illustrations would really have enlivened the book, but they are not necessary. For vaccinated customers, masks are welcome but not required. FrKurt Messick 5.0 out of 5 stars Edited by Anthony Marett-Crosby OSB, it includes authors who are both 'full-time' Benedictines (i.e., residential Benedictines in monastic communites) and part-time, oblate Benedictines. Some are names that will be well known to the readers of spiritual literature (Kathleen Norris, Esther De Waal), and others, while lesser known, are no less skilled in their appointed tasks for this text. The book is arranged in six primary sections. The first section is The Rule. Originally in Latin, this handbook presents a new translation of The Rule by Patrick Barry OSB, which eliminates the traditional numerical coding in favour of a more wholistic approach. It begins appropriately with the word 'Listen', and ends appropriately with the section stating that this Rule is merely the beginning. The second section looks at specific practices of Benedictine spirituality. These include Hospitality, Perseverence, Work, Prayer, Lectio Divina, and more. These are all meant to come together to shape the entire life of the Benedictine -- they are not to be separate and compartmentalised, but rather joined together in harmony for life. The third section, entitled 'The Benedictine Experience of God', looks at the specific prayers and liturgies followed by Benedictines, as well as an interesting section on historical figures (up to the 20th century) in Benedictine tradition, as well as a listing of holy places specific to the Benedictine way. The Benedictine who uses this text will probably most frequently turn to the Daily Offices, Little Hours, and Prayers contained in this section. The fourth section looks at the practical and spiritual aspects of living a Benedictine life. This can be done in community with others (most frequently in a formal, monastic setting), in solitary (which, nonetheless, is not to be confused as being without community), as an oblate, and as a lay person unprofessed to a monastery or community, yet still attempting to incorporate the spirituality of the Rule into daily life and work. The fifth section contains essays on the narrative history of the Benedictine spiritual tradition, a discussion of the worldwide community of Benedictines (which extends much farther than one might expect), and the Cistercian offshoot of Benedictine tradition, the most famous modern member of which was Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk. The sixth section consists of a glossary of terminology one will encounter. This is handy not just for Benedictine reference, but also general church history and liturgical terms. This is a book designed to be used. It has strong binding, easy-to-read pages, sewn-in page marker strands, and good organisation. The essays are interesting, and ones likely to be referred to again and again. This book could easily be used in small groups teaching spiritual practices, as well as an aid in general spiritual direction. While there are different kinds of spiritual practices and traditions, Benedictine spirituality is an authoritative standard from which to glean and with which to live into a more productive spiritual life. This book is a welcome addition to the collection of anyone interested in church history, liturgy, spiritual direction, spiritual practices, and all things Benedictine.Edited by Anthony Marett-Crosby OSB, it includes authors who are both 'full-time' Benedictines (i.e., residential Benedictines in monastic communites) and part-time, oblate Benedictines. There is a great explanation of how we, as lay people, can include the tenets of the Rule of Benedict in our daily lives. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the Benedictine way of life and wants to have one resource to use for daily prayer. I think it is fantastic!Lots of informative and clear articles keeping it straightforward. This was a gift a little embarrassing.Contains the whole of the Rule of Benedict and shome good study for those interested in the Benedictine way of life.
