The quantity that we will use to measure accuracy is called discrepancy.This con?dence often arises in practice from the consistency of repeated runs of the exp er- iment. The quantity w e will use to estimate the precision of an experiment is called uncertaint y.Let’s denote your experimental v alue by Q exp. Example 2 Suppose you make a me asurement of the acc eleration of gravity g. If the precision is high, an experiment with low accuracy could be a signal of new science. 1.3 Uncertaint y Uncertainty is a quan titative measure of the precision of an experiment. I already mentioned in class that, in the physical sciences, a number without units is meaningless and without value. In the experimental physical sciences, it is also true that a measurement without an associated uncertainty is worthless. For example, a digital scale that measures within the Hence, any numerical result or calculation based on measurements must include an uncertaint y. Like discrepancy, there are two kinds of uncertain ty, an absolute uncertain ty (often just called uncertainty) and a percent (or relativ e) uncertainty. I’m ab out to remedy that. There are many di?erent methods used to estimate the uncertainty of measuremen ts or calculations. W e will n ow examine a few. 1.3.1 Uncertaint y in Scale Readings If a measurement does not line up exactly with a scale marking, we are forced to estimate its position between markings. Even if it does app ear to line up exactly to one observer, it may not to another due to the ?nite width of the markings. How large your uncertain ty is from a scale reading will depend very much on the circumstances suc h as how much y ou trust the scale and the particular experiment you’re performing. However, a good rule of thumb is to estimate the uncertain ty as half the scale division unless you have some other means of determining uncertainty. Example 5 Suppose you have a meter stick on which the smallest scale division is millime- ters. Y ou measure some length x to b e 36 mm.Then, one takes the av erage of all the values obtained to be the best value and the range to be the uncertainty. Thus, the steps are: 1. repeat the exp eriment some num b er of times (say, N) and record the results for each experiment (usually in a table). 2. throw out any obv iously wrong results (called outliers) but keep a record of them. This is your uncertainty. Q Example 6 Suppose you p erform an experiment to measur e the density. First, you look over your data to se e if there are any outliers. Clearly, something went horribly wrong on trial 3, so that data p oint wil l not be include d in the calculations. Some explanation should be given as to what may have gone wr ong. Usual ly it is be cause you, the experimenter, did something wr ong and you should have a pretty go od idea of what it was.This is a branch of statistics called error analysis. I’m not going to teach y ou this rigorous formalism, but I will show you a quic k way of estimating uncertainties. These rules are as follows: 1. When adding or subtracting numbers, you add their absolute uncertainties to get the absolute uncertainty of the result. 2. When multiplying or dividing numbers, you add their percent uncertainties to get the percent uncertainty of the result. 3. When raising a number to a power, you m u ltiply the percent uncertaint y of the number by that pow er to get the p ercent uncertaint y of the result. Thus, in a general calculation that inv olves additions, multiplications, subtractions, and divisions, you may hav e to convert betw een absolute and percent uncertainties numerous times. So, you’d pro ce ed as fol lows. First, we nee d the So you put some water in the be aker of the previous example. Then you put the object in the b eaker and it sinks to the bottom.However, just kno wing the uncertainty and the discrepancy usually isn’t enough to evaluate the w orth of a given experiment. You also w ant to compare them in order to determine which of the situations of example 1 y our exp eriment falls into. The simplest situation is one in which an experiment seeks to measure the v alue of some physical constant or parameter. The precision of this experiment would be measured by determining the uncertaint y in your measurement of g. Dep ending on your experimental design, the uncertainty ma y come from scale readings, repetition, calculation, or (as is most likely) some combination of the three. This is often stated by a phrase such as “the t wo values agree to within experimental uncer- tainty.” Depending on the precision of your experiment (i.e., the size of your uncertainty), this statement may or ma y not b e very meaningful. F or example, if the uncertainty in your determination of g is huge (i.e., very lo w precision), then the fact that your discrepancy is less than the uncertainty is not terribly impressiv e. Alternately, if the discrepancy is greater than the un certaint y (see ?gure 1), something is de?nitely up. That is, your experiment’s inaccuracy cannot be explained away as being One possibility is that this is a signal of new science (e.g., the accepted value of g ma y b e wrong). This is not very likely. In this case, you should try to ?gure out what sort of systematic error may hav e arisen to make your experiment go so horribly wrong. Example 10 Suppose the obje ct in example 9 was gold. Notice our discrep ancy is quite a bit less than our uncertainty and the exp erimental and accepte d values agre e within experimental unc ertain ty. However, the experiment was also horribly impr ecise, i.e., the uncertainties ar e huge.You’d just calculate. If you ha ve an object that is some standard shape, like a cube or a sphere, it is fairly easy to calculate its volume using standard formulas from geometry. However, most objects have weird shapes, so it’s hard to calculate their volumes. So, you need some other way to ?nd its volume. One common metho d is to proceed as follows: 1. Get a container of constant cross-sectional area A 2. Put some water in the container, up to a height h w. But masses are easy to ?nd. For example, you could just use a balance. The idea here is to get some exp erience using the ideas of error analysis presented in the introduction. Y ou need to write an informal lab rep ort for this experiment. Your introduction should brie?y explain your goal (namely, to measure the density of some ob ject) and explain the method by which you in tend to do it. A sketch ma y b e helpful for this. Be sure to indicate the method by which you will measure the cross-sectional area A of your container. They will likely have uncertainties associated with them due to scale readings (cf., section 1.3.1). Also record the mass m o of the ob ject. This too will have an uncertain ty. Express these as b oth absolute and percent uncertainties. Finally, record the data you gather in doing one run of the experiment outlined above, namely, h w and h ow. These will have uncertainties arising from scale readings (cf. section 1.3.1). In the ?rst analysis section, calculate the the cross-sectional area A. It will hav e an uncertainty arising from the uncertain ties in the measured quantities you are calculating it from (cf. section 1.3.3). Then, calculate the volume of the ob ject V o and the density of the object.At this point, ask your instructor for the accep ted value of the density of your object. Don’t b other to record the uncertainties in the table. Now do four more trials of the experiment and ?ll in the table. Start with a di?erent v alue of h w each time. Find both the percent and absolute uncertainties.Then, ?
