You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. Can you provide a model number. Check between the two transom brackets, just above the reverse tilt lock switch. Parts are easy to find and usually cheap, and the 35hp engines are pretty easy to wrench with simple tools. Good news huh? Can't get the fly wheel off thought. This motor has been sitting under a Apple tree for around 20 years. I am getting compression and gas to the carb. They also share a lot of parts with the other big twins (30, 28, 40hp engines from the '50s and '60s). Pretty near top of the line in it's day. First thing I would do is check for spark. The spark plugs do not need to be in for this test. There's only one way to get the flywheel off, and that's with the proper puller. A cheap and common replacement for the proper puller is an automotive 'harmonic balancer puller'. Get the beefiest one you can find. Grade 5 or better. Remove the three bolts holding the ratchet to the flywheel, and set up the puller. Crank down on it hard, and if the flywheel doesn't pop up crank a bit more. Usually at the worst possible moment. The very best service manual (by far) you can get for your outboard is a factory one. Reprints are available from kencook.com maxrules.com marineengine.com and theoutboardwizard. If you don't want to buy one, you can probably borrow an aftermarket manual that covers the '57 35hp from your local library. Have you run a compression test on it yet. What numbers did you get if you did? You'll find that several folks here own one that's almost identical to yours, and there's lots of help here if you run into trouble. Listen to Paul Moir. He's got the hot scoop on these things. I can help, too, with this outboard, since I've done most of the fixes commonly needed.http://airflow-skateboards.com/upload/file/fireline-mag-816-manual.xml

If you have to pull the flywheel, you'll need to hold it still while you remove the big nut. Someone came up with a great holder. You'll especially need this simple tool when you go to torque the flywheel nut to 105 ft-lb. Your outboard uses J4C Champion plugs. Don't listen to anyone who says you can run it at 50:1. Parts like coils, points, impellers, etc., are available from Sierra Marine. NAPA stores stock Sierra Marine parts. Be sure you're looking for the '57 35hp parts. Some of the 1958 35hp models were a slightly different design, using a different water pump housing. If you need a carburetor kit, though, get it from a Johnson dealer. It has the new plastic float. The carb kit from Sierra doesn't come with a float, and the old cork float is a nice thing to replace when you overhaul. I think, but am not certain, that the Gales from that year incorporated a fuel pump, unlike the Johnsons and Evinrudes. If that's the case, your fuel connector on the engine will have two prongs, not three. If you need a new tank and pump, and it has two prongs, then it's the standard, non-pressurized OMC connector. That will help you. If it has three prongs, then it's the old pressurized tank. You can find these on eBay all the time, along with kits to rebuild them. Let us know how you're doing with your outboard and don't be afraid to ask questions here. We want all these old OMC motors to keep on performing useful service on the water. Later 40hps were 100-105. I have used Krylon rattlecans to touch up my '59 Gale and it matches pretty well and is pretty decent paint. Now that I said that, I have two cans of the stuff sitting on my workbench and don't remember which one I used.I was a draftee back in the old Army. I got one from him. Now if I could remember who that was! Brain fade.
