In many ways, the E-class is Mercedes; integrity is everything when you have that kind of weight on your shoulders. Honing and Toning Freshly resculpted for the 2014 model year, the W213-generation E-class traces its lineage to 2010. Although the grille covers roughly the same real estate, its corners are now softer, and the previous quad headlamp lenses have been shaped into two longer, leaner units that blend more naturally with the sleek rake of the fascia. The Mercedes shape-up program didn’t neglect the glutes, either, as the formerly flared rear fenders now appear more tight and toned, and the overall package displays a more cohesive and athletic look than did the previous car. The package also swaps the standard grille and the traditional stand-up three-pointed star for a two-bar grille with an integrated emblem. Weight was shaved by rendering the fenders, hood, and doors in aluminum and the decklid from a composite. All in, our all-wheel-drive example tipped the scales at 4136 pounds, and the rear-driver weighed 4000 pounds on the nose. The 302-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 is the E350’s silent partner, sending its output to a seven-speed automatic, where the shifts are fully automatic or activated at the behest of the standard steering-wheel-mounted paddles. We can’t say acceleration is neck snapping, but the forward urge is strong and steady, and responses to pedal inputs are decisive. The E-Class Coupe replaces the CLK in the Mercedes lineup. Available in rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts, and powered by an engine lineup that ranges from a 268-horsepower V6 to a pavement-punishing 518-horsepower AMG V8, the 2010 E-Class lineup gets a major redesign that puts it a cut above the rest in what has become one of the most competitive segments in the industry. To get the best price on your E-Class, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price on kbb.com before visiting your local dealership. The E-Class’ resale values remain equal to or better than the Audi A6, Acura RL and Cadillac STS. Case in point: The new E-Class. Compared to more sedate E-Class offerings in the past, the new generation is markedly sportier on the road. All E-Class variants offer a suspension that adjusts individual shock absorbers either based on road surface and driving styles or at the whim of the driver. This translates to a firmer, more stable feel when cornering, and a softer, more relaxed ride on the highway.Standard MB-Tex leather-like seats, hand-polished wood trim, metal and black soft-touch surfaces give way in Sport models to burl walnut trim and leather upholstery. Sedans offer plenty of front and rear head- and legroom, while Coupes are best suited for front passengers unless you’re transporting children or short adults in the back. Concave and convex surfaces feel modern and look sleek, while gemstone-like twin-headlamps update the E-Class Sedan’s signature front end of four chrome lamellas and an upright star on the hood. In back, Luxury Sedans come with oval exhaust outlets, while Sport models get coupe-like square-shaped pipes and an athletic rear diffuser-look. The Coupe builds on the E-Class’ design cues and updates the traditional wedge coupe shape by removing the B-pillar for a smoother, sharper look. Up front, two lamellas surround an inset star in the grille and jeweled, cubist headlamps. The E-Class can also be equipped with a panorama sunroof, rear-seat entertainment system, Drive-Dynamic multi-contour driver’s seat with massage, and a choice of Premium Packages filled with comfort and technology features. Cons none In addition to the attributes noted above, the vehicle is also economical in that it achieves a consistent 32 to 33mpg at a 72mph cruising speed. Comfort, handling and more power than anyone needs. Beyond that, it is an awesome car. This car is incredible. This is the last year of the Mercedes 4.7 liter twin turbo V8 engine and you should jump at any chance you have to own one. It is stunningly quick and fast. And when you just putt around it returns mid twenties mpg. This is a luxury car that's built like a tank and is as comfortable as any other choice but is faster and quicker than many legendary performance sedans. Numbers? Twelve flat in the quarter and low 4's 0-60 and an easy 25mpg cruising on the highway. Just.when are you going to see this again. Oh, and the V8's subtle burble. Black, with black interior with brown leather seat inserts. Navigation and all the options such as sun roof, auto shade rear window cruise control, CD and Sirus radio. Brian Harper, National Post Brian Harper, National Post Anticipation and desire, yes, or even the occasional antipathy. Serenity, no. Even more uncharacteristically, said serenity didn’t disappear as I became more familiar with the car. After a while, I just sat back and enjoyed the ride, chalking up the Coupe as one of those extremely rare cars that can trigger such positive vibes. There’s nothing inherently magical about the E350. It is composed of metal, plastic, glass and rubber, the same as every other passenger vehicle on the face of the planet. But the sum of its parts somehow adds up to a greater whole. There’s a hint of aggression in its sharp-edged creases, notably the sweeping lines that flow from the front bumper over the radiator grille to the hood. The E350 is quick rather than fast, composed as it accelerates unless you switch the seven-speed manumatic to manual mode (Touch Shift in Mercedes-speak) and get busy with the paddle shifters. Then, the 3.5-litre V6’s 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque make their presence known. When put to the test, the E350 takes 6.4 seconds to pick off 100 kilometres an hour — respectable but not world-class. Those hungering for more can always pop for the E550 and its 382-hp 5.5L V8. But the V6 proved perfectly acceptable for my needs, with enough urge to get the job done. Besides, it is creamy smooth in operation, and the 7G-Tronic autobox knocks off the shifts with flawless precision. Also up for praise is the steering, which has a muscular heft to it without being artificially heavy. One can thank Mercedes engineers for creating the standard Dynamic Handling package. This allows the coupe’s dynamic characteristics to be altered between comfort and sporty settings at the touch of button. Vehicle damping, speed-sensitive power steering with variable centering, traction control, accelerator response and speed of gear changes can all be modified. Mercedes-Benz isn’t known for taking a back seat in the safety department, and the new E Coupe reflects the company’s attention. Along with an alphabet soup of the usual safety nannies is something particularly intriguing called Attention Assist. When driving, Attention Assist supposedly monitors and evaluates more than 70 different parameters in order to recognize driver drowsiness and “provide warning in advance of critical moments of micro-sleep.” Apparently, research by Mercedes shows that drowsy drivers make tiny steering errors that they frequently correct very quickly and in a characteristic manner. This steering behaviour is recognized by a special steering wheel angle sensor that will send an audible and visual display (a pictogram of a hot cup of coffee) to the driver. While the first-rate vehicle dynamics put a smile on my face and the plethora of safety backups reassured me, it was the E350’s interior environment that sealed the deal. First, the interior colours and materials are beyond pleasing. I’m generally less than enthused about the traditional overabundance of black interiors that seem to be the norm with upscale German cars. Thus, the Flamenco Red — a brownish-red hue — that brightened the seats and door panels was a breath of fresh air, offsetting the dark panel pieces. Second, the multi-contour seat seemed to be moulded to my body shape, providing unparalleled support and comfort. Third, the cabin’s sound deadening was effective in keeping the outside out and the inside in, allowing just enough of the world to intrude so as not to seal the occupants in tomb-like silence. Fourth, the instruments are sharp and well lit, and the controls are large, properly marked and fall easily to hand. So, what’s not to like about the E350. Precious little, really. About the only annoyance I could hang my hat on was when listening to talk radio, where the sound coming from the front speakers sounded a little tinny. Conversely, when I had the volume cranked up for Led Zeppelin’s D’yer Mak’er, the song was crystal clear. As for disappointment, it’s only that, unlike the E Sedan, Mercedes does not fit the rear-drive Coupe with its 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, which would make driving a year ’round enjoyment. I guess that would make it a bargain.Science and Technology Sports Cars Technology Transport Canada All rights reserved. No, Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White doesn't magically appear to hand you and your copilot your belts. Rather, upon start-up, a clever device automatically pushes the belt toward you on the outboard side so you can easily take it and buckle up. But the E350 doesn't stop at extreme technological pampering. It also possesses the key quality a classic grand touring car must have: the ability to effortlessly cover ground -- be it curving or straight -- at a rapid clip while insulating its occupants from the harsher elements of the outside world. This design features frameless windows and no B-pillar (the vertical support usually seen between the front and rear side windows). More than simply giving the car's greenhouse a cleaner look, it provides an open feel to the cabin when the windows are up -- a feeling magnified by the E350's standard glass roof. Roll the windows down, of course, and you're treated to a very airy experience thanks to those large, unimpeded openings. Mercedes-Benz is one of the few carmakers to still offer this aesthetically and functionally attractive form of automotive architecture. Effortless acceleration, confident braking and sure-footed handling are standard fare, as is impressive construction that makes it seem as if the car is carved from a block of solid steel. Ardent driving enthusiasts looking for a sharper connection between themselves and their car would be better served by the BMW 3 Series or the Infiniti G37 coupe, both of which trade off some of the E350's coddling nature for a more visceral drive. The greater majority, however, would likely be as happy as big winners on Wheel should they buy this Benz. Mercedes also offers a V8 version of this car (the E550 Coupe). Still, unless you're looking to challenge kids at the lights in their Camaro SSs and Mustang GTs, we can't imagine this refined six not being enough. The gearbox defaults to the less aggressive (and more fuel-efficient) Comfort mode upon start-up, in which it upshifts earlier and requires a firm foot to the throttle to enact a downshift. The manual shift function downshifts nearly as quickly as you can flick the lever (or paddle) but upshifts are not nearly as on point -- there's a noticeable delay between when you flick your finger and when the gearchange happens. This is a pretty strong showing considering the fact that our staff doesn't exactly drive with mileage in mind. For comparison, the E550 we tested averaged 16.2 mpg. Braking performance was solid as well, with the E350 coming to rest from 60 mph in 122 feet. Pedal feel is firm yet progressive, inspiring confidence. Overall, the E feels poised when changing direction, and it's easy to find yourself going at a spirited pace. Our one complaint -- voiced mainly by the more serious driving enthusiasts on staff -- is that the steering effort is too light. We appreciated this when performing parking maneuvers, but wished it would weight up more as speed increased. Push it harder through the tighter turns and the non-defeatable stability control will come into play before you may think it's needed. But unless you're an expert driver who plans on autocrossing this luxury coupe, this will be a nonissue. Bumps are absorbed in stride, with no excess body motions. The cabin is impressively quiet when sealed up -- there's no penalty paid here for the frameless windows. And even with the windows down, there's no uncomfortable wind buffeting. Out back, it's another story -- for those over 5-foot-7, anyway. Although the individual rear seats are well-shaped and supportive, the sweeping roof line robs headroom. The climate control is intuitive, with large buttons and a clear display. The latter easily accommodated our large rolling suitcase and a golf bag without our having to angle said bag. There's ample space to install a rear-facing child seat in back, but doing so will require some contorting on the part of the installer. The car's makeover elicited strong feelings on both ends of the spectrum. Some editors liked the new clothes, feeling that the midrange coupe now looks more substantial. Others thought it incongruous, with too much going on stylistically, especially in the rear quarter panels. In other words, it's a great fit for most folks shopping the luxury sport coupe segment. The premium has been determined based on annual premium data for defined coverages (liability, comprehensive and collision) from a major insurer. Factors that will affect your rate include your age, marital status, credit history, driving record, and the garaging address of your vehicle. The various plasma generation systems described include single-electrode capacitive microwave plasmas, electrodeless inductively coupled plasmas, multi-electrode systems energized with stationary or rotating fields. We also discuss various technical realizations of MWP sources for selected applications. Examples of technical realizations of plasmas in closed structures (cavities), in open structures (surfatrons, planar plasma sources), and in magnetic fields (Hammer cavity) are discussed in detail. Finally, we mention micro- and mini- discharges as convenient sources for miniaturized spectrometric systems. Specific topics include fundamental aspects of MWP i.e., recent advances in the construction of analytical MWPs (coaxially coupled cavities, strip-line technology, multi-point energizing, power combining, rotating field-excited plasmas), operational characteristics, analytical characteristics and applications. Special reference is made to coupling with OES for determination of chromatographic effluents and particle sizing. The developments in elemental and molecular MS applications in both low-power and high-power MWPs are discussed. In this traditional method, continuous large amounts of water solvent are loaded into the ICP-MS (usually 100-1000 mL min A1 ), being the main source of oxygen and hydrogen in the plasma, as well as an overwhelming mass load of sample matrix. 6 These together cause the two main categories of interferences in ICP-MS, spectral interferences and non-spectral interferences. Compared with LA-ICP-MS analysis of solids, this sampling method exhibited 70-250 times improvement in signal sensitivity and the detection limits for most elements were two orders of magnitude lower. Unlike solid sample analysis, the commonly observed time-resolved element fractionation during laser ablation was negligible in solution sampling by LA. With the widely used reference material NIST 610 silicate glass as the external calibration standard and indium as the internal standard element, major and trace elements in a series of geological reference materials (ranging from mafic to felsic rocks) were successfully determined: the feasibility was verified with accuracies within 10 for 45 elements, and most of the precisions reported as RSD better than 7. Besides, due to the high tolerance of matrix effects, this method is comparatively green and environment friendly for the minute consumption of acid and ultrapure water during the sample preparation process, which was reduced by 20-100 times compared to that in the conventional nebulization method. Being simple and effective, this method opens up a new prospect for the solution sampling of ICP-MS analysis. With PFA-LC, the capillary is more recessed than with MicroMist. This latter might reduce solute dispersion, hence leading to a very low dispersion variance when combining PFA-LC and Twinnabar (14 L 2 )... Such high variability can be related to the position of the PFA-LC tip which is likely to be a key factor for achieving reproducible results. The analysis of organic matrices requires the introduction of volatile solvents into the plasma which is an analytical challenge for this coupling technique. Detection sensitivity can be significantly affected by instrumental limitations. This study, divided into two parts, investigated the analytical performance (in terms of sensitivity and efficiency) generated by the coupling of LC and ICP-MS in the specific case of organic matrices. The critical impact of flow splitting on extra-column dispersion was also pointed out. The present Part II is dedicated to the experimental comparison of commercially available SIS by assessing extra-column band broadening and hence the contribution of SIS to the loss in both efficiency and sensitivity. It is shown that the peak variance, due to SIS, can vary from 10 to 8000 ?L? depending on the combination of both nebulizer and spray chamber. The electromagnetic field in turn accelerates electrons and transfers energy from the coil to the plasma in inelastic collisions with gas atoms. The physical properties of the plasma such as ionization energy and thermal conductivity strongly depend upon the carrier gas (4). Rare gases are usually used to generate plasma because they emit only atomic spectra in emission spectrometry and relatively simple spectra in mass spectrometry... Hence the central-axial zone of the plasma facilitates sample introduction through penetration of a carrier gas having a sufficient speed. The skin effect phenomenon explains the success of ICP over other forms of plasmas such as microwave-induced plasma or direct-current plasma (4). As proven the skin depth, that is the penetration of the energy at the periphery of plasma, and coupling efficiency, which relates to the ratio of the torch radius to the skin depth is determined by the operating frequencies (5)... Although there are several methods for aerosol formation, pneumatic nebulization to this day is the most widely used method for sample introduction in ICP-MS. Since the plasma itself is produced from the argon gas stream, it would be logical to energize and employ the same gas stream for aerosol generation (4). This is the basis of pneumatic nebulization which will be further discussed in the next sections.. Aerosol Characterization and Analytical Modeling of Concentric Pneumatic and Flow Focusing Nebulizers for Sample Introduction Article Full-text available Arash Kashani View. Pre-evaporation, without desolvation, can increase sample flow about 2 -4 times.. Nebulization Systems: Chapter 2 of Sample Introduction Systems in ICPMS and ICPOES Chapter Mar 2020 John Burgener Yoseif Makonnen The nebulizer is a nearly essential component in sample introduction systems for inductively coupled plasma (ICP) optical emission spectrometry (OES) and mass spectrometry (MS). Liquids are easy to homogenize. Technology exists to quickly mix liquids into extremely consistent blends of the dissolved components so that a tiny sample of the liquid will give an accurate representative result of the elements in the liquid. Once a sample is in liquid form, it then needs to be introduced into the plasma with a sample introduction system that gives consistent and reproducible results, while also being convenient and affordable. Ideally, the system should require minimal or no maintenance, and be simple enough that any lab person can use it with minimal training. Pneumatic nebulizers provide these features, which is why they remain the most common sample introduction method today. This chapter will provide a general overview and brief history of nebulizer designs for ICP spectrometry applications: concentric, cross flow, V-Groove, Enhanced Parallel Path, Hildebrand Grid, flow blurring, micro nebulizers, nano nebulizers, direct injection and ultrasonic. The use of MWPs as radiation sources for optical emission (OES) and atomic fluorescence (AFS) spectroscopy and as atom reservoirs for atomic absorption (AAS) and cavity ringdown (CRDS) spectroscopy as well as ion sources for both elemental and molecular mass spectrometry (MS) is treated. Devices for producing both E-type capacitively coupled microwave plasma (CMP)-electrode and microwave-induced plasma (MIP)-electrodeless MWPs, including ICP-like H-type plasmas, are classified and discussed, in addition to techniques of their diagnostics, and results for the analytically relevant plasma parameters are presented. The means of generation of voluminous symmetrical plasmas and uses of microplasma devices are also presented with an effort to comment on general classification of microwave cavities. Further, the use of microwaves for boosting of glow discharges (GDs) and laser-induced plasmas (LIBS) is treated along with other tandem sources.
