Sit down with me and let me show you how to get the most from your camera. And if you need a camera-bag-friendly guide to take with you everywhere, I have written a Compact Field Guide for this camera, too.As a roving photojournalist for more than twenty years, he illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. He's operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. During the past year, he's had as many as five of his books listed in the Top 20 of Amazon.com's Digital Photography Bestseller list--simultaneously. Busch's 120-plus other books published since 1983 include bestsellers like David Busch's Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Lenses. Anthony M 4.http://www.msinziniering.com/userfiles/bushnell-scout-1000-arc-rangefinder-manual.xml0 out of 5 stars As cameras get more complicated it's great to have a guide that walks you through all the camera options, and ways to quickly access them and customize your menus. In that regard this book scores fairly high points. For beginners there is the quick start guide, chapters on the ins and outs of creative mode settings, types of AF, live view, picture styles, flash photography, how to get images off of your camera, and editing your image. There are many visual examples of the camera and its functions. There are step by step walkthroughs of all the menus, and ways to customize your favorite items to your own personal menu system. There are extensive descriptions of live shooting and screen setups. Different exposure settings, uses and examples are well explained; from speed to aperture to ISO, along with metering modes. There is a section for off camera flash(es), synchronization and controlling a slave and groups. Step by step details of all the custom functions under camera set-up. The list goes on and on, and there's a lot to be had here. Everything is outlined in a fairly entertaining and concise way. For serious enthusiasts or experts, it's much more of a mixed bag. There's a lot you already know here. Things like a listing of the EF-S lenses or flashes. Shooting through blinds for dramatic portraits (!?). Picture styles and filters. I think most experts have a firm grasp of most of the above if it's relevant to them, making almost half of the book a pass. This is not really too much of a problem for me really either. The book tries to be all things to all people I suppose, and some of it was a bit of a refresher course. But more of it was a course on basic photography than I had thought it would be. My larger concern is what appears to be poor editing. This could pose a bit of confusion for beginners if this is your first DSLR camera, and even folks like me who have half a clue.http://fscl.ru/content/enhanced-network-cable-tester-manual This probably comes from the fact that most of the book was taken from his guide for the 7D. While I have seen some of the mistakes pointed out - such as the claim the 60D has a metal body, these are not stand-outs in my opinion. What are however are some explanations which in turn are supported by visual examples, which are either wrong or mislabeled. I'll throw out just two examples of many. When describing bracketing for exposure, two photo examples for shadow and highlight exposure are juxtaposed. This could leave a beginning shooter scratching their head. Grids aren't available in viewfinder mode on the 60D. Yeah David, ya had me going there. These misgivings aside, this is still a great guide to the 60D. It is an excellent book for those starting out with DSLR's, as it covers every aspect of what is needed to get the most out of your camera, from putting the batteries in to getting images out. There are descriptions of focal length, DOF, and even pitfalls of wide angle lenses. Personally now that I've gone through it, I probably would have been better off with the compact field guide. For the most part I know what I want to find out, and need a way to access the information quickly. You won't get that here. The obvious advantages to this book are the way it's organized for fist timers, basic photography methods along with the blow by blow description of all the features and ways to access them. Things I would hope to find are missing; such as more in depth examples and uses of different types A-F, like back button A-F. So I give it 4 stars if you're new to the world of DSLR's, but probably about 3 stars for serious enthusiasts. For me about a 3.5.He starts talking about some control that hasn't been covered yet, as if you already know what it is. And this is Chapter 1. He doesn't even go over the camera itself and all these buttons and dials until Chapter 3! The LCD screen won't stay on and he hasn't yet told me how to keep it on so I can try to follow the instructions. He has me in Creative Auto mode and starts talking about the AF-On button which he says I should press. When I do I get a message saying that function cannot be used with this setting. Either I am too dumb to figure out this camera, or he is not writing it from the point-of-view of a beginner (which is what I thought his books were for). If I knew how to use this camera, I would not write the book the way he does. He doesn't follow a simple 1-2-3 order in the chapters. I have the feeling as well that this is too much camera for a first time dSLR user. I sort of was beginning to understand the T3i but this monster is too much. I wonder if I can keep the 70-300mm EF-L lens and send the camera back and get a T3i or similar. This is too aggravating for where I am now anyway. I don't need more stress in my life - I need less. I just wish I could find a person to talk with who knows these cameras and could lead me through their use. I cannot understand manuals very well. I was really surprised when I contacted the local Camera Club and there was no one that could help me in person. Nor was it ever suggested that there is a class somewhere. I think I need to go back to Square 1 on the camera and find another instruction book by another author. This is the first book I have. This is the first book I have purchased from David Busch and it was just what I was looking for. My copy is now covered with page tabs and underlines. I read it cover to cover then when back and tabbed the sections I was interested in for reference. I have used it a lot and expect to continue using it for as long as I have this camera. If I should ever need another book of this type I will be looking for a David Busch Guide. It is much easier to read than the Canon owner's manual and has many helpful photos. The author provides tips for making the best use of your camera including step-by-step instructions for updating your camera's firmware and recommendations for useful optional accessories (I bought a separate camera strap recommended by the author that is a very good strap). Professional photographers and those who already know a lot about photography will not care about much of the information in the book except that pertinent to the Canon 60D itself. Admittedly, the book will be most useful for amateurs new to SLR digital photography, but I still found the book to be a useful resource for the Canon 60D even though I have lots of prior photography experience. The cost for this book is minimal for what you will learn from it. Highly recommended. The new 60D replaces a 4-5 year old Canon XS dSLR. I'm neither newbie nor expert, I have little to report about this book that hasn't already been said, but here's the nutshell: The manual tells you what each button does in the literal sense, but this book explains what contexts would call for particular controls and why you might use a particular feature. It's not a full treatment of digital photography, but goes much further than the factory manual. In fact, there have been several moments where I learned how to do something I had no idea my new camera could do while reading the book. If you have spent the money for a 60D, the modest cost of this book will be more than offset by the improved quality of your photographs after you read even part of it.So far, so good, it is quite sturdily bound and has stood up well to a lot of use. It is a comprehensive manual covering every aspect of the 60D in a language that everyone should be able to understand. All references to the menus are supported by large illustrations showing the aspect of the menu being referred to. Being an American publication there are some references to U.S suppliers of accessories but all in all I have found this a very helpful book with many chapters I have yet to explore. Anyone new to DSLRS or unused to using the manual controls of the camera will find the book a great help. The book itself is of the highest quality. I am not new to photography and my background is with roll film and non digital format, so I am going through a relearning curve, this book is extremely helpful in explaining the many features of the 60D, I found the photo's and text relating to the many camera menus very useful. The instruction book that comes with the 60D is small and cluttered, and I found the need to back referencing to other pages, with David Busch's book this is minimised. To date I have not read through every page but I will eventually. All in all this book is excellent value for money, and I can totally recommend it.Because of this, you have to realise that he can't realistically write every single book from scratch and it definitely shows in the editing of this book. I purchased my 60D a few months after it was released and after a lot of research, so I know what changes Canon had made between this and the previous 50D. This is apparent as occasional references to 'the joystick' or 'the lock switch' (these were updated to be an 8 way selection pad and integral OK button, and a lock button not switch on the 60D.) Be careful, some of these erroneous edits may trip you up. As others have said, it's a very American centric book and doesn't exactly travel well. Yes, it will give you some knowledge, but there are other, I feel better, camera book ranges out there. I bought this partially because of it's size at 460 pages I thought that there'd be more information and it would go more in depth. Some of the writing goes off on major tangents in order to appear 'more human' to the audience - I found that irritating. It is well written in language that is understandable to even the amateur. The text encourages the reader to experiment further and to develop skills. The book is not designed to explore photographic techniques alone but to understand the ability of the 60D camera functions available to achieve them. The book is well illustrated throughout with strong recognizable images of actual graphics. The book is as much a reference as a tutorial and doesn't overpower the reader and will refer to later chapters if a feature arises that is not immediately relevant at that point. The author stays firmly with the product, in this case the Canon EOS 60D so that you feel that you are having a one to one with your own camera which is so important in this case as the 60D is no longer made. To sum up the book is the Canon EOS 60D.I actually bought this book because I had just acquired a copy of the book about the Canon Powershot G1X from the same author and that is also an excellent read. I don't believe you can have too much of a good thing, but readers who have been using my 400-page in-depth guide to master their Canon 60D have asked me to distill the most essential information into a portable field guide for on-the-go reference. In the approximately 150 pages of this lay-flat, spiral-bound book, you'll find in-depth descriptions of every control, menu option, and capability of the Canon 60D. Each choice is accompanied by my recommendations and a description of when you should or should not use a particular setting. There are seven no-nonsense chapters: Quick Setup Guide. This chapter has photos of every control and a description of how to use it. Shooting and Playback Menu Settings. Command cards and cheat sheets provide a menu listing and a recap of the Shooting and Playback options. This chapter explains how to use them, too. Setup and My Menu Settings. You may not use these menus quite as often, which is all the more reason to carry along my instructions on how to use them. Using Flash. Reference guide to working with the 60D's internal flash, and Canon's external units. Shooting Movies. I've managed to squeeze in instructions on using the 60D's movie-making capabilities, along with tips on shooting better movies in the field. Shooting Tips. Pages and pages of tables listing Shooting Menu and Custom Setting Menu recommendations for a variety of situations, such as stage performances, long exposures, landscapes, and portraits. As a roving photojournalist for more than twenty years, he illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. Kenneth Depree 5.0 out of 5 stars Now having done a comparison of this book with the Canon 60d manual that came with the camera, I can report that it is a very useful companion to the manual. If you are setting up a new 60d, my recommendation is to use both the manual and the field guide together. Generally speaking, the manual does a better job of presenting the basics because it uses both illustrations and text while the field guide uses mostly text, but the field guide nicely complements the manual by often giving more information than the manual which helps you decide what to choose between the alternatives for each setting. The material is presented in a concise manner so you don't have to wade through a lot of superfluous stuff to find the meat you are looking for. Because the manual and the field guide are organized differently and do not match page for page, my suggestion when setting up the camera is to use chapters 3 and 4 as the starting point then check in the index of the manual for the material it has on the setting you are focused on before you make your decision. My first thought it was better to do the reverse, but when going through the process of setting up my new 60d I found it worked better to follow the order of the field guide If I could only have one or the other, I would probably take the Canon 60d manual, but using both together is much better than relying on either one alone. And the field guide may be a better choice to carry in your camera bag if you just want a quick reminder of what button(s) you should press or dials you should turn to achieve your purpose in the field. Although you may find that the nifty little pocket guide that comes with the camera (in addition to the complete manual) may be enough. I found Chapter 7, Shooting Tips, very helpful. Here the author indicates how he recommends that the camera be set up for all purpose, sports indoors and sports outdoors, stage performance, long exposure, portrait, HDR, landscape, macro travel. For someone new to Canon SLR cameras, this list of settings compared with the list of default settings that is also included in the book, would be of big help in setting up the camera. It is also useful for someone upgrading from another camera, such as the T2i like I am, and are now asked to decide on some settings that you didn't have experience with in the previous camera. Reading over the list, I found several recommended settings that I questioned for my camera based on my previous experience and use of my T2i, but seeing the author's recommendations motivated me to do some research both in the field guide and on the internet before making a final decision as to what I thought was best for me. For myself, I found this field guide guide sufficient. The field guide is well worth the little that Amazon is charging. I am very glad that I purchased it. It is a valuable complement to the manual when setting up the new camera, and it continues to be useful as you get more experience and start shooting in new situations.Highly recommend for those who are looking for a quick camera referenceSo this Compact Field Guide is a very much welcome addition as it simplifies all the points and its small size making it very portable to carry around especially when I am out there in the field.A must for all Canon EOS 60D owner. It's easy to find the subject you want to reference because of the way the book is laid out and using the table of contents. The pages are heavy weight, so I expect this will last a long time in my camera bag.It gives very detailed information and shows lot's of pictures of what he is talking about. A good reference book for anything I need to know. Good pricing on Amazon and book came well within the alloted time frame and was well packaged. Another good buy from Amazon. Ellen P.It is just a tad bigger than I expected but is very comprehensive and will answer question you may have while out and about with your camera. Go for it you won't be sorry.I love the spiral binding, which enables you to lay the book flat on a surface. It's not as thorough as the Digital Field Guide by Charlotte Lowrie, but it is a good secondary reference that is more portable. His books are so easy to understand and are very helpful.I bought this book in the hope of getting a portable, easy to access, source of mind-jogging information when in the field. I don't really have too much problem with the actual content itself. After all, when compared to what Cannon give you with your expensive camera, pretty much anything written in plain English is a help. Having said that, I do, however have an issue with the quick ease of use of this guide. It is, after all, meant to be a quick-reference, handy field-guide to commonly used controls and settings etc. I must confess to having a problem, in some places at least, with the quick understandability of this guide. As I said, I would say I'm quite a knowledgeable photographer and just needed a QUICK reference field-guide. Sadly, for me at least, this is not it and it won't be accompanying me in the field. I will, however, still keep it at home for reference as almost anything is better than the Canon instruction book.I have been using a canon 400D camera and although most of the buttons and dials are in a different position, using the camera is pretty intuitive. The book is ideal for new Canon users and people who want to learn how to use the camera off of autosetting, but for experienced Canon owners who know their way around a current canon camera I think the majority of the book would perhaps be unnecessary. The part of the book that helped me most was explaining how to save my own settings on the camera plus details on registering the battery. Once I have a decent off camera flash I'm sure it will be handy with it's it's instructions for certain speedlite uses. All in all a good buy.The contents of the book are not much different to the original manual. I bought it as a reference with extra tips but found a number of things I was unsure about weren't mentioned. I've replaced it with copy of The Expanded Guide which is much more informative. Well throw away your cheat sheets and command cards. DAVID BUSCH'S COMPACT FIELD GUIDE FOR THE CANON EOS 60D is your solution.
