During his time at SAS, John devoted much of his time to terminology issues and to refining the Global English guidelines. As a linguistic engineer, John customized and supported tools and processes that helped make SAS documentation more consistent, easier to translate, and easier for non-native speakers of English to understand. John has been interested in machine translation and other language technologies for many years.Full content visible, double tap to read brief content. SBCrewsnThruLife 5.0 out of 5 stars This book is designed so the reader can read it from cover-to-cover. Yes! It is that well written. Or, the reader can glance through it daily and constantly find interesting tidbits. His colleagues consider him to be the guru on globalization, and they are correct. I bought this book on the recommendation of two people who worked with him at SAS. After reading John R. Kohl's book, your confidence on writing for the global market increases 100.While this is more of a reference book than a page by page read, I enjoyed it and used it in my writing class. In fact, it provides an exciting and passionate case for the value of language in technical documentation. The first chapter outlines the impact of Global English on costs, quality, and usability. It also examines the growing impact of machine translation. The rest of the book consists of a rich set of guidelines to follow. The most valuable part of the book, though, is the focus on before and after examples of sentences followed by discussions of why one solution is better than another. My only frustration with the book is that it does not serve well as a quick reference, which is what I would normally expect from a style guide. However, if I have to chose, I would much prefer to engage in the logic of the author's recommendations rather than just a prescriptive list of do's and don'ts.There has been a multitude of excellent articles and references dealing with writing English for localization. But I have never found a concise compilation of guidelines and explanations on writing Global English in a handy book format, until now. Kohl's book is well researched, easy to understand, has multiple entry points, and was written by somebody who knows the topic thoroughly. If you write any kind of material in the English language that will be localized into another language, I recommend that you purchase Khol's book, read it, follow its advice, and keep the book handy on your shelf. The information is timeless, Remember, this writing style applies to everything you write because you are writing for a global audience, even in the United States. This book is a masterpiece I've been using since it was released. I know the author and I told him I wish I'd written it. You don't have to read everything, the contents and index take you wherever you need to go. Or, go to Appendix B to see the global English guidelines list. The list includes cross-references to the appropriate sections. This book supersedes the Chicago Manual of Style, that is how I use it and I am a long-time technical editor. When it comes to writing content, it is easy to forget that people in other countries around the world may actually read it so it is important to design your content around global English practices in order to be conscientious about other's needs. This is a well-researched and practical reference guide for content departments seeking to implement or improve localization workflow for content. I like the sections that are prioritized for machine translation and human translation. Would love to see a website where comments, reviews, and dynamic updates about this book are available.Recommend buying it in print, as the Kindle edition is difficult to navigate easily.I may favour this because it is written by someone who has worked as a Software Technical Author and this is reflected in the examples provided. It clearly illustrates how ambiguity in writing can confuse the reader and lead to misunderstandings. The examples are clearly explained and all reflect writing I have read in manuals over my 40 years working in the Software industry. I mentor new technical authors and this work will be on my recommended reading list for students. The examples and tips are excellent. The global scope of the different contributions unites analyses of German, English, Spanish, French, Scandinavian, Indian and South African literature. The contributors attend carefully to the economic contexts of the literary production while simultaneously addressing the market’s influence on content and form. Thoughts on poetological reflections of economic phenomena complement studies concerning the means of production and vice versa. He received a master's degree from Columbia University in 1959, and earned his doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago in 1968.He has also worked at think tanks such as the Urban Institute. Since 1980, he has worked at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he served as the Rose and Milton Friedman Senior Fellow on Public Policy. Sowell has written more than thirty books, and his work has been widely anthologized. He is a National Humanities Medal recipient for innovative scholarship which incorporated history, economics and political science. His father died shortly before he was born, leaving behind Sowell's mother, a housemaid, who already had four children. When he learned that Stigler had moved to the University of Chicago, he followed him there. He claims that many problems identified with blacks in modern society are not unique, neither in terms of American ethnic groups, nor in terms of a rural proletariat struggling with disruption as it became urbanized, as discussed in his Black Rednecks and White Liberals (2005).This book investigates the phenomenon of late-talking children, frequently misdiagnosed with autism or pervasive developmental disorder. He includes the research of Stephen Camarata and Steven Pinker, among others, in this overview of a poorly understood developmental trait. He makes the case for the theory that some children develop unevenly ( asynchronous development ) for a period in childhood due to rapid and extraordinary development in the analytical functions of the brain. And, unfortunately, we're living in a time where no one expects hard evidence. He has argued for the need for reform of the school system in the United States. In his latest book, Charter Schools and Their Enemies (2020), Sowell compares the educational outcomes of school children educated at charter schools with those at conventional public schools. In his research, Sowell first explains the need and his methodology for choosing comparable students—both ethnically and socioeconomically—before listing his findings. He argues that many schools are failing children in their educations.David McKay Co.. Her primary academic interests are history of the book and publishing, history of political and social revolutions, and art history. In 1996, the text was expanded and converted to HTML format for installation on the WCSU Libraries Homepage under the title Hypertext Library Lingo: a Glossary of Library Terminology. In 1997, many more hypertext links were added and the format was improved in response to suggestions from users. During the summer of 1999, several hundred terms and definitions were added, and a generic version was created, omitting all reference to specific conditions and practices at the Ruth Haas Library. In February, 2000, ODLIS was indexed in Yahoo. In 2000, the dictionary was expanded to 2,600 terms and by 2002 an additional 800 terms had been added. From 2002 to 2004, the dictionary was expanded to 4,200 terms and cross-references were added, in preparation for the print edition. Since 2004, an additional 1,500 terms and definitions have been added.A newly coined term is added when, in the author's judgment, it is likely to become a permanent addition to the lexicon of LIS. The dictionary reflects North American practice. However, because ODLIS was first developed as an online resource available worldwide, with an e-mail contact address for feedback, users from many countries have contributed to its growth, often suggesting additional terms and commenting on existing definitions. Expansion of the dictionary is an ongoing process.Entries are descriptive, with examples provided when appropriate. The definitions of terms used in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules follow AACR2 closely and are therefore intended to be prescriptive. The dictionary includes some slang terms and idioms and a few obsolete terms, often as See references to the term in current use. When the meaning of a term varies depends on the field in which it is used, priority is given to the definition that applies within the field with which it is most closely associated. Definitions unrelated to LIS are generally omitted. As a rule, definition is given under an acronym only when it is generally used in preference to the full term. Alphabetization is letter-by-letter. The authority for spelling and hyphenation is Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language (College Edition). URLs, current as of date of publication, are updated annually.Suggestions for expansion and improvement are always welcome. A substantial number of the terms in ODLIS have been suggested by its users. The dictionary is very much a work in progress--electronic text has the advantage of allowing incremental revision. The terminology of some fields within library science has yet to be fully developed in the dictionary, for example, business librarianship, media librarianship, music librarianship, and preservation. These areas will be tackled as time allows.Priscilla Kaplan deserves special thanks for her careful reading of the manuscript and for contributing several dozen terms and definitions relating to library systems, networking, and cataloging. The author is also indebted to Dr. John V. Richardson, Jr., and Brad Eden for their critical reading of the manuscript. Laura Calderone helped with technical aspects of the HTML version of the dictionary. The author would also like to thank Dr. James Roach, former president of Western Connecticut State University, for granting a six-month sabbatical in 2003-2004, which allowed the author to complete final preparation of the manuscript for print publication and to begin work on the 2005 online edition.Brian Hickam, Assistant Director of Library Services, Benedictine University, deserves special thanks for suggesting a significant number of terms. His ongoing interest in and support for the project are very much appreciated. The author would also like to thank her colleagues at the WCSU Libraries for providing insights into their areas of specialization. The author is especially indebted to Brian Kennison for his advice and assistance in overcoming problems related to file size and other technical issues. The University Computing service at Western Connecticut State University also deserves credit for hosting ODLIS on its public Web server from the dictionary's inception until 2004.Academic Press, 1992. Suddenly things we once took completely for granted — having dinner in a busy restaurant, being able to give a friend a hug — seem like distant luxuries. But otherwise, I hope we never, ever go back. Six months ago it was “normal” for nearly a quarter of the U.S. civilian workforce to be unable to take a day of paid sick leave and for us to feel comfortable tolerating the systemic oppression and exclusion of Black Americans. Six months ago, the fact that we were moving far too slowly to decarbonize the world’s economy, opening ourselves up to potentially catastrophic climate change, was more or less okay. I don’t want to go back to a world where the political system is flooded with money, where 70 percent of the population believes that the system only works for insiders, and where interest groups control the policy agenda. Doing so is the best way to ensure both businesses and our society prosper in the decades ahead. We won’t solve the problems that we face without it. To solve inequality, we need good jobs — and lots of them. To solve climate change, we need (among other things) to transform the world’s energy, transportation, and agricultural systems. Only the relentless pressure of the free market can drive this kind of transformative innovation at scale. A challenge because more than a half a million people have died, the global economy has been massively disrupted, and tens of millions of people have lost th eir jobs. A challenge because the combination of deep economic disadvantage — at the beginning of May nearly 61 percent of Hispanic and 44 of Black households had experienced a job or wage loss due to the corona virus, for example, compared with 38 percent of whites — and the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breona Taylor and countless others have brought anger and calls for justice to our streets. The world will almost certainly be poorer, more divided, and more fearful in 2021 than it was in 2019. Inequality is no longer simply an abstract idea. It’s a reality that many “essential” workers must show up even when they’re sick because they have no savings and no paid leave. That racism is not something that was solved by the civil rights movement. As the skies clear and early research suggests that the reduction in fossil fuel pollution is saving lives, the costs of continuing to rely on dirty energy have become much more tangible. Watching states bid against each other for vital medical equipment while the federal government fumbles its response to the virus has made the reality of our broken politics very clear. It has shown us that planning for the future is essential and that, when the chips are down, a capable, responsive government is a necessity, not a dirty word. We’ve learned that when we must do something, we can: Fundamental change no longer seems impossibly out of the reach. But to get there, business will have to change how it understands its role in the world (and in the U.S. in particular) — and how it thinks about government. Markets do not police themselves; they must be balanced by transparent, capable, democratically accountable governments. As a result, one of the fastest routes to profitability is often to persuade politicians to write the rules in your favor. Firms feel free to dump greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, for example, while spending hundreds of millions of dollars to lobby against carbon regulation.
