It actually works and works well, not to blocky or grainy.more so at the extreme 4x level but at 2x to about 3x the camera compensated nicely and actually cleared up the image.not sure how they do it, but they do. As others have noted, with rapid movement of the camera you will notice your image jumps or shakes. Slow down, don't go from left to right or up and down at 100MPH and it's not bad. Moving images within the video are fine, it's just if you move the camera itself very rapidly you will notice it. I tried the 3 HD video modes, and it also has a standard resolution mode as well that I did not try. I compared all 3 with and with out the image stabilization on which did not seem to improve or degrade the image at all. At 720p 30 fps - Not to bad, noticed the jumpyness or shakyness of the image as I moved left to right in my test, but slow down and it's not to bad. At 1080p 30fps - Nice quality.really nice, but the jumpyness of the video is back, you have to take it a bit slower but nice quality all in all. I did not try the underwater mode, but assume it works as advertised everything else has so far. Now I throughly loved the fact that there are no CD's with this camera, nothing in the box to load. You simply plug in the provided USB cable and the software.every bit of it and all the drivers you need for the camera are built right in and install on your PC from the camera.this is an excellent feature, I always misplace the CD's and have to download from the website anyhow. Speaking of downloading from the website.I also loved the fact that ALL the cables came with the camera. HDMI, USB, and Component video cables. Either they gave you a sleeve and you wanted a case for your accessories or they gave you a case and you didn't want to carry all the accessories so you go out and buy yourself a protective sleeve or pouch. So just go get what you want. I myself purchased the Kodak Case that Amazon recommended to me.This camera feels rugged and well built. It looked really great in the pool. It also looks great above water. I use it at my son's baseball games and I have been amazed at the quality. Hands down the best thing about this camera is the size. It's so easy to slip in a pocket and just carry around. Great little vacation camera. My only complaint is that the control wheel is a little small. I would often accidentally stop recording while trying to zoom in or out. You get used to it though and it is a minor annoyance. I highly recommend this camera.Tip: These camcorders have a known problem of occasionally freezing up if you shoot long videos. I had that happen on my first one a couple of times. Once, I did not lose the video but simply powered it down and back up. The other time, I lost the video I had shot. The one I lost was a long video. Picture and sound quality are better than another new model I tried when you’re in wet conditions. Note: I use this only when kayaking or sailing and I try not to submerge it. The instructions say it is fine to use underwater, to 30 meters if I remember correctly. I haven’t chanced that, but have taken video from behind a waterfall and up close to Niagara Falls which is quite wet. Would rather be safe And keep my good camera completely dry, as well as my phone.I knew we were going to doing a lot of water activities so I knew I needed a water proof camera. I knew this camera would be great at underwater videos however I didn't know how great this camera was at taking videos above ground. I wanted to attach some videos showing the quality above and below the water, but amazon only allows one video for review. Since there is already a video of the underwater capabilities, I figured I would attach one above water. If i had any complaint is that the microphone was highly sensitive to wind noise but his definitely wasn't a deal breaker. I purchased a set of rechargeable batteries and charger so I could just swap batteries out and not worry about charge time. I also purchased the remote and a tripod to make this a complete package. Here are the items I purchased: I doubt it will replace my Canon HV30 for more serious shooting but I paid about 6 times as much for the HV30 so the comparison is not really a fair one. That said, the PlaySport is far more compact and quite capable of recording decent video even in shallow water. All in all it's a good little backup unit and well worth the cost. You should probably buy a case as well to protect the lens when the camera isn't in use since no cover is provided. Strengths: Reasonable cost Takes good sharp video given plenty of light and a steady hand Compact (roughly the size of an iPhone) Uses inexpensive recording media Gripes: Still photos only on par with those my iPhone takes 1080p video has a choppy look unless the camera is held quite still or panned VERY slowly Sound pick-up is poor unless recorded quite close to the subject Amazon's delivery services were good and all of the items I ordered(camera, SD card, and extra battery) arrived within the estimated time frame and in good condition. What's up with that. Newer models are supposed to get better, not worse. BATTERY: The other significant change is that the Zx5 has an integrated battery. Yes, that means it's non-removable.And besides, what's the point of making a camera that is capable of recording up to TEN hours (on a 32GB card) when a single battery charge can't last even close to that. The older model recorded in the MOV format. MP4 format is easier to work with in most video editing software. The other positives about this camera (but these are not new features): ----Waterproof (up to 10 feet).So, essentially, you have to decide which features are most important to you, and which features you are going to sacrifice. Overall, this is a pretty good camcorder and is filled with tons of good features, but I think it's really too bad that Kodak made those changes with the sensor and the battery. Otherwise, this really would have been an awesome little camcorder. Despite those 2 big negatives, I bought this camera anyway (instead of the Zx3). (I really wanted the macro mode and mp4 format). If most of your filming will be in low-light situations I wouldn't recommend this camera. It's good if most of your filming will be outdoors or in bright light. A slow card can cause problems when recording. Also, the HDMI cable is not included with the Zx5. You're out of luck. The Zx5 uses a smaller cable. It uses the micro HDMI cable (type D). I did a lot of research before buying this camera and still had a hard time choosing. Hopefully this review will be helpful to you. (((I had to compress the uploaded video because of Amazon's file size limitation. Sure, I shot some video that was horrible and really grainy, but I was in really low-light and I was moving too fast. I got much better results after slowing down. And filming in really bright light gave great results. What I really love about this camera is that I can get really close to my subject. I actually seemed to get the best results from the 720p recordings. The biggest challenge is low-light. The lower the light levels, the more obvious the graininess is.That says something about how great this camera still is. Don't throw it out if the battery goes bad. I had 2 of these done and they both work like new now. Batteries Plus, Jim, Natick Massachusetts. I had some screen freeze issues. Kodak site is still up and running. Some reviewers say that the side doors don't open. I solved this problem with a drop of wd40 lubricating oil on the hinge and one on the latch. Haven't had a problem since. Amazingly quick boot up time so I can get the shot in time. Dedicated buttons, not touch screen, so you can shoot in bright sun when you can't read a screen. I can shoot this camera one-handed without looking at it, just by feeling the buttons. Decent image quality, pretty good for a small camera, even by recent smartphone standards. Works under water. Select macro under focus options to get super close shots, 3-4 inches, great detail, super clear. Super easy menus.All of them either came with the latest 1.06 camera firmware version as purchased, or I have been updated to 1.06.This last one purchased from Amazon may not have antiglare even though activated via the menu option. Whether it is due to the anti glare feature or not, some of the Paysports have a screen that is incredibly able to be viewed at an extreme angle. That is not the case with this latest one. Other Playsports have screens that wash out the larger the viewing angle becomes, and this is the way the Amazon one is. There is no in-between. This latest is not able to be viewed at a large angel but is ok directly in front. This latest from Amazon does have anti-shake, which is inherent and not programmable and works, and seems to correct for relatively minor movements.One of the prior cameras goes to a purple screen in low light. I was going to return it to the other vendor but realized that when the screen went purple, it meant that the camera was below its limit of producing a decent picture, and it was worthless to continue. So the purple was like a too-low-light warning and the camera was kept. For cameras without this quirk, one must beware that even though the viewfinder picture looks good, the video quality may be lousy. Using underwater is where the real caution applies. Before using one for surface snorkeling, I placed it in a 5 gallon bucket for a little while. After taking it out and completely drying the exterior, some water had entered the compartments, but fortunately no damage as the water had not gone beyond the compartment entrance. After comparing with a ZX3 that had been used UW without problems, it was noticed the ZX5 doors did not seat down as far and consequently were not of course able to seal adequately. It passed the bucket test. The ZX5 survived 5 snorkel outings and only a very tiny amount of water had entered. If wondering why so many ZX5's, here are the features that keep me using this in spite of all the new cameras on the market. The quality of the 60fps 720 is pretty good for video and DVD's if ighting is adequate.For some lighting conditions there is a bit of ghosting, it just depends. Good lighting of subjects- no problem. For fishing the jumps can be frozen at the higher 60fps and come out fairly clear, but of course there is always a bit of compromise with motion. But how is it possible to be fighting a fish in a canoe by himself and hope to get a shot with a camera at the exact moment the fish is jumping. It has a decent wide angle of view to hopefully capture the jumping prize, and a wide-angle magnetic attachment once available makes the video capture even more likely. The magnetic add-on wide angle is slightly fuzzy on either side, and it introduces a bit of curve but is close to straight and I can stand it. Have to use the add-on wide angle with tarpon because they will come up who-knows-where. Also the wide angle makes the subjects appear farther away. It is nice if the fish look their normal size to the extent possible when jumping.
