Fortunately, there is a simple method that will save your hair and your upholstery by getting that window up quickly. Step 1 Stabilize the door so it doesn't move on its hinges. Open the door and lean against the opened part of the door with the latch against your chest. You will be standing between the door and the rest of the car. Step 2 Grab the glass between both palms. There may not be much of your window showing, but if you have at least 1 inch you should be able to do this. Fix a Stuck Car Window Manually Will Norbury How to Fix a Stuck Car Window Manually The principles for fixing a stuck window will be the same or quite similar whether you have a 2000 Toyota Camry, a 1997 Toyota 4Runner, a 2001 Mazda, or some other car model. I've had this issue with my 1997 Toyota 4Runner before. Here's what you will need and here's what to do: Remove the door panel. Never attempt anything beyond your skill level. Be sure to locate all screws—some will be under plastic covers, behind a door handle, beside a courtesy light, etc. Remove the plastic covers during this process and set them aside. (Always put your screws in a safe place.) Put the door console aside. Work your way along the sides and to the back of the door frame. The plastic snaps should disengage. Lift the door panel off. You will need to hold the window up once you remove the screws of the regulator mechanism so that the window does not fall off the regulator mechanism. When you unscrew them, be sure to hold the window so that it won't accidentally fall off the regulator mechanism's ledge (this is an extra precaution). Stick a piece of wood into the frame to hold the window in place. It's often located in the top right of the frame. Remove the bolts and nuts holding it in place. The cover will have a magnetized pull when you remove it. Take one band and thread it through the wire that leads to the brushes; loop it back through its own end and over a section of the regulator to secure it. Unfortunately, sometimes things happen that make this no longer a viable option for you.It's kind of funny to think that most kids today have never seen this mechanism and likely never will. A power window mechanism actually works almost the exact same way as the manual mechanism. The difference here is that an electric motor works in place of the hand crank handle. Consider the difference between an electric can opener and one of those old hand crank can openers. They both do the exact same job in almost the exact same way, one just works on the power you provide by turning a crank yourself, and the other one has moving electrical parts. There are two circuits that connect it to a motor in each of your doors. So, when you press the switch up the circuit sends a signal to drive the motor up and when you press the switch down, the circuit sends the signal to drive the window down. The same applies to the buttons for the other windows in your car. The switch is wired to your battery and connects through a fuse, relay and circuit breaker somewhere along the line as well. Normally these worm gears are what prevent the window from being moved up and down manually. This is a security measure because you obviously don't want someone to be able to walk up to your car and simply Force the window down out of the way. Worm gears have a self-locking feature that allows them to spin in one direction but not the other. So, when your window is malfunctioning and you need to get it done, it does take a little bit of work to make it happen. Unfortunately, sometimes the mechanism fails, and your window will not roll up at all or you'll get it stuck partially open. This presents another security risk, and also can be a problem if the weather is bad and you're trying to roll the window up but rain keeps flashing in your face because it's stuck all the way down or partially open. As we said it takes a little bit of work, but it's better than leaving your window Partially open all the time. You don't want the door swinging on its hinges for this to happen. Ideally you want to have the latching part of the door against your chest. This could be a time-consuming process and the glass will likely slip from your grip more than once. As long as you maintain pressure and do it slowly, the years that normally raise your window will continue to turn allowing the window to move upwards. Secure the window as best you can in the top seal of the door, and the gears should be maintaining it in place at that point. If your window is fully stuck in the door with nothing coming out, there's also a method that you can use to raise the window. This is a little more complicated but shouldn't be too hard if you're at all comfortable doing any kind of DIY work on your car. You'll need a few tools to pull this one off so have the following handy: If you're confident that this will work for you and it's something you can do, then these are the steps you need to follow. There are several screws that you'll have to take off of the front of the panel. Some of these will be hidden under plastic covers and behind the door handle. Make sure you keep the screws safe when you take them out, so they don't run away on you. You can pull the connectors apart using the screwdriver and disconnect the switches. You may need to use the screwdriver to pry some parts free but try to be gentle and not break anything. There are a number of plastic snaps that hold it in place so they will click as it pops free. Do your best not to break these as you move along the outer edge of the panel until the full panel is free. It should look like a black tarp that is sealed around the inside. You can use a razor blade to loosen the seal to peel it off. You're going to need something to brace your window at this point. A couple pieces of spare wood that are about 1 foot long should work to brace the window itself, so it doesn't fall. If you don't have any adequately sized wood handy, you can use some masking tape or painter’s tape to hold the window in place. Secure it firmly and then move on. You can remove those, and the window will no longer be held up. Keep your hand on the window to keep it secure in case the wood or tape you used isn't holding it securely. Test that you've got it securely in place and do some more securing work if you need to. Take it from below and lift it up evenly and then wedge the wood under it again to hold it in the closed position. You can remove the bolts that hold it in place at this point. The nuts can be secured with a piece of tape, so you don't lose them, and be aware that the cover is magnetized. There are spring loaded brushes that pop out when you remove the axle, so this is where the rubber bands come into play. Loop the rubber bands around the wire and secure the brushes in place. You can take the motor axle out now. Keeping the window securely in place in the closed position, you can replace the regular mechanism and screw it into place. You should be able to remove the wood or tape that's holding your window at this point Turn it clockwise to get it properly in place and keep the brushes aligned. Turn the axle as far as you can, and the window should be fully completely closed at this point. You can release the window and the axle now. There are loose wires still at this point that would connect the motor to the panel on your door that you don't really need to worry about because you haven't repaired the window, you just manually close it. You don't really need to reconnect the wires at this point. The panel can be a little complicated to get back in place because you need to make sure you do it the right order. Get the door handle where it fits and then try getting the top corner of the panel slipped into place in the frame. Continue around the edge of the door to secure the whole thing in place. Just remember that it's non-functional, and you're still going to need to have it looked at by a mechanic to figure out exactly what it is that went wrong in the first place. The original problem could have been with any of those mechanical parts like the regulator or the motor itself, or it could be a wiring issue somewhere along the line. It may be as simple as a blown fuse or a busted relay that led to the problem. The last thing you want to do is invite any potential thieves to ransack your vehicle or steal it because you weren't able to get a power window in place when you needed to. So, getting it repaired is the kind of thing that you can put off for a few days if you need to, especially if you manually secure the window in place anyway. Just remember that if it's an electrical problem, it could be indicative of a larger issue that you may need to get looked at so don't let it go for too long if you're not 100 sure why the window failed in the first place. Each of the metal screws is under a plastic cover, beneath the door console grip, and behind the door and the right courtesy light. The none metal screws are at the edge of the panel. Then take the door console out of the panel. Fix a flat screwdriver behind it and pull the whole console backward to detach completely. Beneath the console, disentangle the two cable connectors. Move the door console to a corner. Then, take out the black plastic panel at the other end of the window locks. It would be much simpler to pull it out with a screwdriver placed on the top and dragged downwards. You can use your hand or a sleek prying device to take out the both on each flank. Pull the panel up and move it off the track; then twist the door and push it out of the board while it’s still holding up. They should be about 1 ft in length. The woods would serve as props to support the window from the door. These nuts will be in the open if the window is down the biggest docks of the frame. Pull the top of the window as high as you can with one hand while securing it beneath with the other side. Insert the props in the frame, pushing it into the window bottom and door frame. Shift the engine into view once you finish unscrewing the nuts. You can pull it to the back of the right port where it’s accessible enough and easy to work on and fix. This band helps to prevent the falling and loss of screws at the bottom of the engine. Once you have fastened it on the motor base, then you can take out the nuts holding the cover. The next thing is to remove the motor axle. This one will be a little bit more complicated because of the two brushes stuck on either side of it. If you get the snap ring, wrap it tightly around the copper cable heading to one of the brushes. Then thread it back to the other edge of the band and over the screw on the other part of the regulator. If you have the brushes tightly secured, you can lift out the axle from the body of the motor. Turn it anti-clockwise and move the shaft to a safe corner. You should raise it with your hand to an extent and then completing the winding with a motor. Hold the window shutter from the top and bottom and then take out the props supporting them. Ensure that you fasten the screws well. Then, place your hands beneath and above the window and pull it up as high as you can. Use the other hand and place back the motor axle into its position in the motor body. Allow the shaft to go down on its own without pressure until it goes deep into the motor. The turning process helps it to lock into the motor body and then click the commutator with the brushes you reattached. When both of them are in place, put back the cover of the motor with caution. Ensure you don’t disconnect the shaft mistakenly to avoid loosening down everything again. Fasten the nuts back when the lid is back in position. Separate the wire connector completely as you won’t need them for a while. Foremost, place back the polyethylene door frame cover before putting it into position. Fix the door again into the panel first, and then place the top backside into the top door frame cover. Knock on both sides of the panel and the base edge to put the connector on the frame. Lastly, put back all the screws you took out. That’s why you should know how to get a power window up manually in case of situations like this. This thread is only a stopgap arrangement, until you can find an electrician (mechanic) who can fix the real issue. I remember you said tree branch. In fact I got a stick from my house but it was a little bigger than needed. The rope I was using was a nylon shoe lace and I thought it should hold the fort till the morning.I am not sure how long one can continue with this Jugad. If the motor is to die it will give enough warning before as going slow. One thing which happens suddenly is snapping of wire joining motor to assembly, which will make your window jammed. In your case there was carbon in power window switch and after a FNM once cleaned my co driver side switch, i came to know the procedure is not very complicated, I believe that opening switch and cleaning would have been a easier exercise had you known about it.
