Trucks equipped with the 6L80 or 6L90 transmission may experience the same hesitation after making a hard stop with a closed throttle, then aggressively applying the throttle. The second condition may occur because the 6L transmission downshifts may not be complete when the throttle is reapplied. In this case, the computer delays engine torque application for 0.5 seconds to allow the transmission to engage first gear. Solution: This problem could be caused by a cracked or split transmission filter. If this is the case, the fluid pump should be disassembled and inspected for possible damage.GM’s testing and analysis found that split or damaged filters may be caused by a damaged pump. This can send a high pressure fluid spike down the filter neck on a cold start, resulting in the filter body cracking or the filter seam splitting. The filter is not defective and this is not a filter quality issue. Important: Do not replace the filter without inspecting the pump. Failure to inspect the pump and clutches could lead to a repeat of this condition. These issues may be caused by the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) sensor not being learned correctly in the ECM (Engine Control Module). Solution: The ECU will have to be reprogrammed. Possible DTCs include P0776, P2715 or P2723. It could also be caused by one or more of the clutch fill times not being learned by the TCM. In which case, the Service Fast Learn (SFL) procedure will have to be performed. Should the problems persist, the valve body will need to be replaced. Over time, this bearing could fail, resulting in noise and poor transmission operation. The problem could also be caused by a mechanical issue inside of the four-wheel-drive transfer case like a worn bushing. This loss of fluid occurs near the transmission cooler at the crimp joints on the metal ends of the cooler line where it joins the rubber hose. Towing heavy loads, and the constant shifting that occurs in stop-and-go traffic and mountainous terrain can intensify the heat, which can cause the transmission to literally overheat. This can result in blown transmission seals, along with damage to the clutches, bands, and valve body. To keep this from happening, we recommend installing an auxiliary transmission cooler. Some of the plastic and lower-grade metal pieces tend to wear out prematurely, causing all sorts of issues. You may see harsh shifts, soft shifts, failure to engage Drive, slipping in-and-out of gear, and overheating. So do yourself a favor and go see a mechanic right away. Next, an OBDII scan tool can allow you to download all of the diagnostic trouble codes, which can often tell you what’s going on with the transmission. After that, a visual inspection will need to be performed. However, you don’t know the actual condition of the internal components inside that transmission, which means you could be in for even more problems than you have now. Plus, that warranty probably won’t cover labor charges if you have to replace the transmission a second time. However, most mechanics will use an OE master rebuild kit, which takes the transmission back to its stock form, and usually does not address any of the factory design flaws. This means you’ll probably have the same problems in the future. And that warranty might not cover you if you are traveling and need work done at the local transmission repair shop. Most of them are built using much higher quality transmission parts, and modifications are often performed to correct for factory design flaws. Downshifting seems fine. I've had it in to a tranni guy who sent me to GMC to have the computer reset. The GMC guy took off the pan, found no filings or anything in the oil could not visually see any problems. Also, when I bought this truck, there was no manual--it has electronic 4x4. I change into 4H up to about 60 kph. 4L I change in Neutral. Is this correct? Also, my friend changed into 4x4 with the steering turned hard (I nearly freaked)--did she damage U-joints or anything.I have to coast in neutural until I get to flat land. Once on flat land I can go forward. Any ideas? Two things will help: set the parking brake before you shift into Park when you're parking the truck on that incline. Then when you start it, shift into Neutral with the parking brake still engaged to release the stress on the park pawl and help get fluid flowing through the system sooner.I took it to the dealership before leaving VA and no codes came up on the diagnostic, said the fluid was a little dirty but nothing else so it would be safe to drive to NC. Fluid was dark and smelled like cleaner. I had it tested and have the PPM of metals. I also had sample of clean Dextron VI tested for comparison. The results seem very high for tranny fluid with only 800 miles on the fluid.If it was done by a lab, they should have sample data on what you're asking for. Nope, doesn't work that way. They did hook it to the computer, open it up and, order all the parts to rebuild it and flush out all the lines and cooler. Thanks. Mine went out at 17,000 miles. They replaced the bad part. The tranny went out again at 28,000 miles. This time they finally replaced the tranny. Now I have 75,000 miles with no other problems. The part that failed was the gear that locks and spins the other direction for second gear. There was a bulletin out when mine happened. At 28,000 the clutch discs were so full of metal shavings that it was slipping so the computer would have the transmission shift very hard. I've got a 06 Sierra bought new in Jan 07. It is only 15 months old. I now have 44k on the truck (all highway miles, I have a killer commute). However a lot depends on what caused the failure. Is there a service bulletin that covers it. One thing for sure, the dealer is going to say that 44K in 15 months is a lot of mileage even though it shouldn't matter. The dealer also plays a role in this. If you can convince them that it should be warrantied, the GM rep is more than likely to go along. Have any friends in your dealer's service department? If one tells you no you may find one that says they will work with you. Might at least be able to get GM to assist with the cost. I have reverse but when in drive the thing wont engage. If I put it in 1st gear it is fine. If I start of in second gear it has little power till it get up to about 12 mph. It will not move in 3rd or overdrive. All drive gears work fine, I read a page from alldata that it could be the sun gear coming out of the sun case. I would appreciate some kind of info. I would say that the towing temp would be in the correct range, depending on the weight you are towing and the type terrain. Do you just tow intermittently or most of the time. What weight are you towing and in what sort of terrain and open higway or in city traffic. Just to be on the safe side I would go ahead and install a bigger after-market cooler. It has a automatic overdrive transmission. I recently had the transmission filter replaced and put about 5 quarts of dexron 3 automatic transmission fluid in it. So I thought that it would shift right but I was wrong. It shifts into first at about 10 mph but when it goes to shift into second (which is suppose to shift at about 30 mph.) it doesn't shift i even had it up to 35-40 mph I would appreciate any advice that anyone can give to me. We recently had a new-rebuilt motor installed and has MAYBE 300 miles on it. It had a new clutch installed as well. Now when I shift into 2nd gear it makes a slipping-whining noise, I dont know if I have a clutch problem or a tranny problem. The truck is low geared, so I mostly start out in 2nd gear. I have not noticed any problem in any other gears. The second problem is that the fuel pump will not always shut off when the truck is shut off and runs the battery down if I dont dis-connect it each night. Any help would be appreciated, thanks R.R. Now, I've heard the clunk before, and nothing happened afterwards, but I guess this was the final straw. My theory is that the clunk problem cumulates, and you might be able to get away with a hundred, a thousand, or ten thousand clunks with no repercussions until one day some component of your tranny cannot take it anymore and fails. Most likely after it's off warranty and GM doesn't have to deal with it anymore. This morning out of no where I felt my trucks transmission different. As I left for work my transmission felt like it wasnt in the right gear. Asi accelerated from a complete stop the truck would not accelerate with any power until it got to about 25 mph. When I put my truck in 1st gear and 2nd gear manually it felt perfect however when I put it in drive it felt like I had manually put it in 3rd gear and was trying to accelerate from a complete stop. What the hell is going on?! As far as your problem with your 2002 silverado tranny. I had that same problem with my old truck, a 2000 dodge ram. When the weather was real cold out, down in the single digits, the tranny would start out in second gear and had to be shifted manually until it warmed up. Then after the warranty when the tranny started acting up(it would go completely out of gear when it downshifted)dodge didn't love me anymore like they did the day i bought it and it cost me some serious money to get it repaired. It never really worked right after that so i ended up trading it in for the chevy. Only about 40 or so. Also, the problem didnt go away once it warmed up. However, when I went out to grab some lunch the transmission was back to normal. Which in a way bothers me more because the problem might be harder to fix if its not a consistent thing that a mechanic can see. This makes me think of a previous post I read in this forum where the problem would go away when the truck was turned off and turned back on again. The transmission problem seems to be gone for the moment but the light remains. Although I'm quite sure the light comes on when theres an emission problem. Either way, its been a bad day for my truck and I wish I knew what the cause was, if any, and how to fix it. The symptoms were slight slipage at about 60 mph, of about 200 rpms several times and then it would stop until i dropped below 60 and then would start over again. I always thought it was the torque converter having problems locking up. It also had problems with erratic shifting in and out of first and second gear when making a turn, it would hunt back and forth between first and second gear several times, plus the problem it had starting out in second gear when it was cold out. I had it back to the dealer about three times over the next few thousand miles, they scoped checked it for trouble codes, and couldn't find any. The tech took it out for test drives and it wouldn't do it. I was told they couldn't do anything untill they diagnosed the problem and swap the faulty part out, but not to worry, they have it on record.
