By CJs Pirate 4.0 out of 5 stars However, that said, more than any other book that isn't specifically about Eastern WA, this book has plenty for everybody. One down side, as I mentioned earlier, were the lack of good maps. I'm happy to see several of the hikes I've taken listed in here. Honestly, my wife was rather thrilled about it too since one family backpacking trip we took last summer was one of the author's listed favorites. Nice job, Mr. Leonard. I've already been extolling the virtues of your book to other hikers.I hiked many of the trails, visited the trail heads, and talked to many local rangers and hikers.http://www.crw7.co.uk/userfiles/fender-g-dec-3-manual-download.xml

I made sure to include the best, most accurate information to help you pick a hike and hit the trail, from short day hikes to week long backpacking trips. I believe a variety of hikers will find this guide helpful, whether you are looking for new hike ideas, enjoy exploring new areas of the state, or need information on that out-of-the-way trail you've been meaning to hike. And I think backpackers will find this guide indispensable. Cheers, ScottThe one missing essential information (to me) is elevation gain. Instead, the author gives a 1-5 difficulty rating, which is okay, but not precise enough. It's indispensable in helping you choose what to hike, what to bring, what to leave at home, and what to expect when you get there (especially the little annoying hidden things, like parking fees). Seeing the maps of the hiking trails helped me a lot too. I hope you get this book before you go hiking because you might regret it if you don't.Great descriptions, it has definantly helped with my spring hiking and camping choices. Perfect for ever glove compartment!I actually bought one for a friend who was moving to Seattle, but I liked it so much I kept it for myself! It includes distance of hike, legth of time it takes an average hiker to complete the hike and even scenery types and sights to look for.Just make sure to look at online update of your trail before heading out.It is much more useful in helping you decide which trail to attempt next - be it a day trip, a few day getaway, in the midst of out-of-state hiking tourists, or way off in the wilderness. There are plenty of trails of all types in the book. The trails are organized by region, shown on small locator maps to help you pick which place to visit. There are also a few lists in the beginning - 'best waterfall hikes', 'best hikes with kids', etc. This setup has been very helpful for my planning of day trips. Each trail has a description of the sights you will see, specific map numbers for detailed topographic maps from other sources (no trail maps are within this book), typical months for hiking access, parking costs to expect (a bit outdated now that WA state parks do NOT charge a fee!), and fairly accurate directions to the trailhead. I wish the book included more information regarding road conditions - I drive a Honda Civic and some of the trailheads are accessible only by way of an off-road vehicle because the roads are so bad. I have bought a number of topographic maps from other sources and this book lists maybe half of the trails on the maps.As some readers said about the last edition, this book is a great index for Oregon and Washington hikes. Whatever it is, there is a good chance it's in here. It's a good book to peruse through to get a few ideas for what to do on your next day off, but I always, always, always compare what other books or websites have to say about any trail before I go looking for it. One of the good things about this book is it does include contact information for all of the trails and also permit information which is helpful for people who don't think about paying for parking. It is useful for little things like that, but I would strongly recommend always having one or two other more detailed books nearby. There is a gentleman, last name Sullivan, who has written several regional books, at least for Oregon, and they have fantastic details, maps, directions and pictures. They include 100 trails for each region and so far seem to be quite accurate. I strongly advise checking them out. Happy hiking! In many of those cases descriptons on how to get to the trailheads where inaccurate, or if or what parking pass is required at some of the trailheads. But what really is missing is information on the road conditions to the trailheads: I found that many of them can only be accessed with a four wheel drive or high clearance vehicle -- something that would be good to know ahead of timeif you only have a plain old passenger car like I do. My recommendation is to take the information in this book with a grain of salt and to consult at least one other hiking guidebook before you venture out to go hiking. My family and me have used this book many times (mostly in Oregon) and have found it to be accurate and helpful. I have not had any difficulty locating a trail; and the trail descriptions are spot-on. In that edition, they listed several trails that did not even exist - for example, spend a day trying to find Bobsled trail near Pendelton. You can't and you won't. Too me, it is obvious that McMorris and Scott are actual hikers, and have probably been to the trails they describe. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Bonnie Scott 1.0 out of 5 stars This is thin, uninformative and out of date.It is only thanks to this book that my husband and I have experienced such amazing diversity of spectacularly beautiful trails in our beloved PNW over the last 8 years since we moved to Washington. WTA and gaia can easily provide the detailed specs and up-to-date trip reports needed to plan and prepare for trips, but it is always with this book that we check the scenic rating, basic specs, and read the scenic description to decide if we would love the hike or not. It also has a great layout with sections and area maps to quickly scout out what hikes might be available in nearby areas that are worth looking more into. We owe such an amazing thank you to Scott Leonard! It is only thanks to this book that my husband and I have experienced such amazing diversity of spectacularly beautiful trails in our beloved PNW over the last 8 years since we moved to Washington. We owe such an amazing thank you to Scott Leonard!Any time a specific destination is in mind, one should always check the internet for recent information. That said, this book was never worth its cover price. There have always been better books, and for some areas, such as Central Washington, it has little to nothing to offer. But if you like browsing books of hikes, you might find it worth adding a bargain copy of this to your bookshelf. Just don't believe everything it tells you.Every time we use it at least one fact is wrong. The last straw was when I grabbed it going out the door on the way to a hike in order to find the trail head and it gave wrong directions. I ended up on the wrong road in the the wrong place. Luckily I was near another hike (which wasn't even in the book) and our whole day wasn't ruined, but we were at least an hour away from where our trailhead actually started. I have had exits from I-5 be wrong, driving directions wrong and even incorrect pass information (Forrest pass vs.You should buy a different book and be aware this author has many books, all with the same faulty information.I had just bought it when I entered a ranger station with it tucked under my arm to seek additional information. One of the rangers spotted the book, rolled her eyes, and said that they had had a lot of trouble with people who had read this book. It contains inaccurate information about everything from trail conditions to the requirements for permits. Perhaps it's OK for some of the very basic information about the beauty of a particular hike, but don't rely on it for up-to-date information about trail conditions or any other timely information. The information is apparently recycled from days of yore, at least in the edition I just bought in July, 2010. The photos of trails and vistas are breathtaking. These are hikes you will want to hike, dream about hiking, or both. Based on their more than 100 years of combined experience in Washington's backcountry, Ira Spring and Harvey Manning chose their favorite trails for this compendium of classic hikes. Along with the images and hand-drawn maps, you'll get the authors' first-hand descriptions of the trails they hiked many times over. Featuring spectacular views, flower-filled alpine meadows, lakes and streams, ancient forests, animals and birds, and solitude, these trails will give hikers a taste of Washington's best. Infused with a strong conservation message, this guidebook not only introduces hikers to Washington's gems but encourages them to become active participants in an effort to preserve and, in some cases, reclaim the remaining wilderness. However, that is what makes it special. If you want a book with 1000 hikes and a short listing of facts, this book isn't for you. However, the authors have pulled together their favorite 100 hikes and feel free to tell you exactly why they think they're great. Ira (Spring) was a famous photographer in his day, and I enjoy drooling over his photos of the sites I'll see on the way to hike. We usually preface our hikes from this book by reading the hike description aloud and laughing over Manning's excesses. My edition is one older than this listing, and in it, as another reviewer remarks, the authors do rail against motorized vehicles. Anyone who's been asphyxiated by a 4-wheeler and coughed for minutes after its departure can appreciate and agree with their rants. In the edition I have, there is no negative mention of dogs or horses. In fact, Harvey references hikes with his dog fondly. I have noticed in later editions of Mountaineers books anti-dog writing which bothers me - a lot. However, I have never seen that in this book. If you can only own one hiking book for Washington, this is the one. It's entertaining, informative, recommends fantastic hikes, and has great photos.I didn't get into the prose, though, because as I thumbed through the summary description of each hike, I was disappointed to find how few of them are accessible to the casual hiker. I'm going to Seattle in mid-May and I wanted to take a few hikes while I was there. Of the 100 hikes listed in this book, less than 5 of them are accessible in May, and all of those are either on the coast or east of the Cascades. The other disappointment was that a very large percentage of the hikes involve trips of multiple days. I'm sure they're gorgeous, but this borders more on camping trips than hikes. I found Instead of actually describing them, they spend most of the time trying to make witty comments about this or that, which I found annoying. The pictures however are cool, thats why I'm giving it 3 stars.
