The introduction relates world festivals to the universal human search for meaning, and offers thematic relationships between seemingly disparate events. Context is key here, whether in the color-coded maps offering information about religious populations or in the introductions to each section describing the religious beliefs and history of each group. Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist festivals receive the most coverage, though Sikh, Taoist, Zoroastrian, Shinto, Jain, Baha'i, and Rastafarian festivals are also covered. Beautiful full-color photographs, diagrams, and maps bring the celebrations to life, and informative text boxes offer additional facts about related foods, games, and chants. With its global view of world festivals and religions, this book deserves to be in every reference collection. It provides plenty of ideas for group activities incorporating some of these ideas. I particularly liked the Japanese doll festival, I thought that children could draw picture of people or make clothes for a favorite doll in their national costume. When I saw this book at Amazon, I thought it would be the book that I was looking for. But I was wrong. It only explains about the religious festivals and the history behind the festivals. It is good but I did not expect this limit in the book. If it only describes the religious festivals, it should mention on the cover page. All history behind the celebration of religious festivals are explained in a fantastic way, although it does not explain enough for the Islamic festivals. If their target was to explain all religious festivals, it would be great to explain all history in details. If readers want to know only religious festivals, definitely this book is for them. But there are other festivals in the world, and you cannot know from this book. And, unfortunately, the new edition is inconsistent in updating statistics. The membership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is still given as about five million worldwide when it is well over 12 million. Figures in the sections on Hinduism and Jainism contradict other areas of the book; Sikhism quotes numbers from 1993, and Islam uses a 1996 calendar. Such sloppiness detracts from the books usefulness and questions its necessity. All rights reserved.Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.
