This is a very informative way of setting up your signal. We’ve set the Knee more towards Hard to show the sharper curve you might be used to from your existing compressors when loaded up. There’s also Attack and Release settings. You can see all the results of your changes and the gain reduction they’re triggering in the live oscilloscope view. The default type, Clean, is a very transparent model that will do well in most cases. Get the routing right in your DAW first (check its manual if you don’t know how to do this), and then click the Side Chain button at the bottom of the Pro-C interface. Your compression is now being triggered by this sidechain, but is happening to the channel that Pro-C is inserted on. There are EQ controls here for affecting the sidechain signal. Once you’ve created a node, there are several options for sculpting the frequencies at and around it. Here’s our game plan: Often, when you’re EQing a track, there will be a particular frequency that’s only an issue occasionally. An example of this is a vocalist who strains to hit a note and the tone of her voice gets particularly harsh in that range. Another example is a filter sweep on a bass synth that gets very resonant at just one point in the song. The issue with this is that during most of the audio material, this frequency isn’t problematic. EQing it out throughout the whole track can make things sound thin. Of course, you could use track automation to temporarily pull down that frequency at that exact moment, but that’s painstaking work and there’s now a better way. It works kind of like a compressor, where it only attenuates when the amplitude of an audio signal goes over the threshold. It’s different than a compressor though because it’s more surgical. When a compressor attenuates a signal, it pulls down the whole thing. Unless, of course, it’s a multi-band compressor. Even still, a multi-band compressor will pull down an entire band. So when a vocalist strains and hits a note where 6,500 Hz really jumps out and sounds harsh, the dynamic EQ bell can pull down just that frequency at that exact moment, leaving everything else untouched. This helps you fix frequency masking when you’re mixing. Let’s say that the top end of your lead synth is competing with the hi hats in your mix. In the tutorial video, BigJerr shows how you can route a sidechain signal from the lead synth to the hi hats, and have Pro-Q3 duck (attenuate) the frequency that’s masking only when the synth is playing. When the lead synth isn’t playing, the hi hats sound full and bright as normal. For a mix engineer, this is an absolutely stand-out feature! You can eliminate frequency masking by being quite heavy-handed with the EQ attenuation but without sacrificing the fullness of all elements in your mix when masking isn’t a problem. Dynamic EQ is far more surgical than multi-band compression and lets you target very specific frequencies like a sniper! There’s no clutter. It sounds good, it's amazingly flexible, and best of all, its graphical interface makes it a joy to use. The v2 update in 2014 added a swathe of new capabilities; the one I use all the time is the 'tilt shelf' curve, which is perfect for transparently rebalancing the tonality of a source or a mix, while other v2 highlights included 'match' EQ, a freely resizable window and greatly improved analysis features. FabFilter fans will, of course, be well aware that the company already make the superb Pro?MB, which provides versatile frequency-dependent dynamics processing, so the question on many lips was how they would manage to introduce this into Pro?Q without either duplicating Pro?MB functionality or creating a pale imitation of it. And FabFilter fans won't be surprised to learn that they have indeed found a way to do this. Attack, release and ratio are fully automatic, as is the threshold by default, though this can be switched to manual control. In use, though, this really isn't an issue, because the automated settings respond very intelligently to any input signal you throw at them, and you can easily set a limit to the amount of gain boost or attenuation that gets applied; the 'direction' of the dynamic action is also easily controllable, so you can have a boost that attenuates dynamically or vice versa. What you do get here that isn't on offer in Pro?MB is the ability to create very narrow dynamic bands, allowing you to dynamically dip out resonances, feedback whines and so on.
