John Guilbault 3.0 out of 5 stars After finishing the book, I can't help but feel a little disappointed. About 40 of the book has nothing to do with how to take head and shoulders pictures (or any pictures, for that matter), but rather with the business of photography, and how to make yours more profitable. It seems this book is aimed, not at the amateur photographer, but at the pro who's looking to improve his business.http://abeess.com/userfiles/fallout-3-broken-steel-manual.xml

He goes on about how to find out what a client wants, how to treat them, what things to have readily available at your studio, etc. Most of his suggestions simply would not apply to an amateur. I was hoping for.I don't know.maybe some information on how to take great head and shoulders portraits. It's not like most of the people reading this book are in a position to hire lots of assistants. If I had that kind of money, I'd just pay a seasoned pro photographer to teach me everything he knows. He repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowing what your customers needs and desires are. I believe he has failed to take his own advice and has put out a book that doesn't meet the expectations of his clients. Now, the reason I give the book three stars and not just one is because it does contain some useful information about posing and lighting the subject, and his portraits are truly stunning. I'm not sure his lighting setup, which leans more toward fashion lighting than portraiture, would be appropriate for most clients. Still, the book shows the lighting techniques and posing very well. He also goes into detail on posing the hands, head, shoulders, and even the eyes. It's just a shame that he wasted so much space on information that isn't on topic. I wish he had gone into more detail on various lighting setups, but apparently he didn't have enough space. I'm keeping the book, so Jeff has made his profit off of me, which seems to be his main goal. But I won't be putting him on my list of authors to buy from in the future. If you are thinking about doing portraits this is a book that will serve you well. I intend to buy most, if not all of his books and give them to my daughter, who is beginning to get interested in photography.a very good book. By the way I had it delivered to my kindle account and it was delivered almost instantly. Great Amazon service.http://china3d8078.com/userfiles/fallout-3-archiveinvalidation-manual.xmlOther similar books focus only on the creative and artistic aspects of portraiture, but not the equally important business side of the process.Reading more of his materials. It is worth the investment. So, great reading, great learning and well worth the purchase.Good advice and written well. And you can learn from this book. Boy was I wrong. Jeff's book gave me a needed refresher course in posing and he reminded me that, much as I'd like to believe that we're being paid to do art, we're really here to make a visual product that satisfies the end purchaser. While I chaffed a bit every time Jeff mentioned how much money he makes or what kind of car he drives it does serve the make the point that he sees this as a business and because of that he is able to make a good living. The book is very worthwhile for anyone who wants to make a living doing portraits. I've photographed for 25 years now and I still found some good information that will move my business forward. Visually, the book, the layout and the photos were very well done. Way to go Jeff.If you are truly serious about making money in photography especially if you are going to be photographing High School Seniors this book is a must. From his section Tools of the Trade. The paragraph on Camera Selection and the Camera setting paragraph. This is sound advice and he has put into words what I have been debating with photographers. Also page 18 when to shoot raw. The workflow that Jeff talks about does work. Please read the information and try it and you will see that it works. Right now is the new Senior season and we are using this information from the book to fine tune some of our operation. This is a very good book to give to your photograph friends. Also Chapter 9 Post Production. We are trying to work in some of these principals for our sales as well. Way to go JeffThe only disappointing thing i found was a lack of tips on posing males or people with glasses, after all, we do exist, and may at some point want a photograph done.I'd buy this again. Not the case with this.If you're looking into stepping up your Senior images, this should be on your list.Short and sweet, but gives you just enough info to hey started. It certainly would have helped to better understand. It should show a little more to posing but it does help quite a bit!I own many books on senior high school photography but this one tops the list. Best book I've read on how to do and what to do.I do not need studio setting -- I need outdoor setting of senior photography and help with posing. This was hardly touched on. Shipping was excellent and the book was in excellent condition. That is why I give it 5 stars. With an emphasis on creating images that, will sell themselves, readers will learn to,correct common figure problems and design poses, that look natural, crafting images that clients, are sure to love. This is for you This book covers everything from head to toe with all you need to know. I even had a professional photographer look at my book and he said it was a great book. If you think you know it all or just beginning or simply want family photos to look better then this is the book for you. Overall very happy with the product and experience. Additional introductory chapters detail the four main posing styles and reveal how to determine which will work best with a subject, their clothing, the location, and the purpose of the portrait. He lives in Fresno, California. Full content visible, double tap to read brief content. Jan Klier 3.0 out of 5 stars What the book is lacking though is high quality instructional text. This book is probably most helpful for an experienced, but early career photographer who is looking how someone else is doing things just to mix things up, expand on breadth. For someone who has not gotten any other instruction on posing, the descriptions will fall well short of anything that can be reproduced in a repeatable and predicable fashion. And for the seasoned pro, there is not enough new stuff in here to make it worth the read. The style of writing is much more of a pro sitting down on the porch over a drink comparing notes with someone else, than someone trying to explain how something works from the ground up. In terms of photo books, it's like showing a photo, the lighting diagram, but not explaining why those lights were placed there. Lots of those books around as well. Would I have picked it up from a book store? Maybe. Would I buy it again. Probably not. Did I expect more than it delivered? Definitely.I couldn't put it down. It had so many points I would have never considered, and wouldn't have guessed that would matter to a woman. For example, ankles are about the only thing I never notice on a woman, but they do. I would have thought leaning a person up against a rock for example would be a great shot, well, not exactly. Mr. Smith covers nearly everything from the tilt of the head to how the toes should be positioned. Also another thing is how to creatively hide areas of a person that are going to make an otherwise great shot into a reject. Great pictures of women, guys and families. He certainly brings out the beauty of the gals in his poses. (I must say though that with most of these gals, making them look good is not too hard.) Well worth the price. Amazon delivered in about 4 days. Ric.Couple of chapters on how to sell your work - dont even understand why they were added, apart from making up for volume. Most of images in book are pretty mediocre, and like 70 of them reminds you of what person who just learned how to apply gaussian blur in Photoshop to smooth skin and make Orton's effect would be keep doing out of sheer excitement (and i kid you not. Image on the cover is one of very few good ones). On the whole - very few good tips and loads of repetition of other books. And very few good shots, which actually looks professional (sorry for repeating this, but its kind of strikes me. I never saw such a horrible stuff before in a book that pretends to teach people)Explained clearly and good example photos to se it in real lifeReading, understanding, and applying positively affect my photos right away. I personally was having problem in getting the right pose for model, especially full body. I have never felt good with the composition. I guess it was because the shape of human body is different from normal photo frame. The way Jeff describes things are is excellent. Not so much of hard chewed theory. Practical approach with a small but make sense backgrounds makes me focus into trying to apply his lessons right away. You can't go wrong with this publication. It will inspire you to come up with other poses. The author would tell you to do one thing and then the example photo would break the rule that was just given. Anyway, it did help me with posing a little better, but it could have been better. We apologize for the inconvenience. Published by. Amherst Media, Inc. P.O. Box 586. Buffalo, N.Y. 14226.
