So what has changed. The spells Harm, Heal, and Haste have been toned down. Other spells have been adjusted or renamed. Weapons are classified by the Size of the intended wielder, not the size of the individual weapons. A noteworthy effect of this new weapon size system is that Small characters can wield small-size greatswords, longswords, longspears (with reach), and other two-handed weapons. Classes have been tweaked. Bards and rangers received the most changes. New feats have been added (some original, some from the builder books), and some feats have been altered (a Power Attack now gives double benefit for two-handed weapons). Skill synergies have been expanded and knowledge skills now include appropriate monster lore. In addition to outright rules changes and tweaks, much of the core rule content has been clarified and updated with 3E errata. The combat section, in particular, is organized much better. Even the dreaded grapple rules are now relatively clear. All in all, 3.5 is a welcome update. The typographical errors are forgivable, given the extent of the update. The new options available to players (in the form of new class features and feats) make the play experience more fun. Veterans will enjoy re-learning the game they love and exploring all the new character possibilities.Full content visible, double tap to read brief content. The complexity is brings adds more layers and styles of play, but the book clearly states that every rule is optional. Some familiar with other versions will probably wonder the differences. 3.5 “balanced” elements of 3rd edition (which is why this version costs significantly more than 3rd edition). Differences from 5th edition is a emphasis on character creation in the form of open character development (5th edition has archtypes, 3rd is more modular); to some this can be overwhelming, but to players invested in learning and looking for comprehensive long-term plays or individuality in their character development this can be liberating. The artwork is great and unique, with every artist bringing their own style and flavour. While this is technically my first version I started on, it was long past it’s production timeframe and I choose to learn this and create a group, while I player other versions. The book is worth a purchase simply for the art and read (classic) but defining it is the right game for you, might take the right group and homebrew (everybody makes their own ruleset to engage the game with). The learning curve would be the last thing to note and it is steep, but if you like it you’ll learn it.With this tome, you will be able to create a fictional character, to take part in an epic adventure with your friends or family. Need to quickly look up the price of a horse-drawn cart? It's there. How about the base stats for someone of the elf race. It's there, too. Wizard class information. Feats? Rules on grappling? All there. It's also a very nice book to have a physical copy of, and each person's handbook takes on a life of its own, from sticky notes inserted in the pages, to scribblings and highlights in the pages. The book is filled with excellent information, examples, and wonderful illustrations. The book is of a somewhat heavy construction, so it'll last for years if treated right. Inside this book's pages are hours of enjoyment and fun for all ages. However, 3.5 is one of the more difficult versions to learn, but don't let that intimidate you. It takes quite a while to learn everything, and in the time it takes, you will be playing part of countless adventures, to where you won't even realize how much you've learned. All in all, I would recommend this to both new and seasoned players alike. It is an excellent addition to any gamer's rulebook collection.Highly disappointed and a waist of my time as my set is still incomplete.Highly disappointed and a waist of my time as my set is still incomplete. It looks like it's never even been read; though it had the previous owner's name inside the cover. Every class is so balanced that it doesn't matter which one you are, they're all the same. Also, there are specific moves that you're allowed to do for each class; that makes it feel like a video game: you push the button and the move happens and you see what the damage is. There is no more imagination to try to think up your own moves and assess the damage. The 4.0 game is designed on the assumption that the DM is five years old and won't let you do anything that can be read from the rules verbatim. Terrible compromise in my opinion, which takes away much of the fun. Next, they got rid of many of the classic classes and races and replaced with bizarre ones that take the game in a whole new direction. DISCLAIMER: I only have the first three core books for 4.0, and I'm aware that they came out with many more to fill in the blanks, but seriously, do you want to have to buy all those books just to version up one step from 3.5 to 4.0? Also those books have GIGANTIC font and whitespace issues, so you're really not getting what you should out of them. OK, enough of this rant and bash on 4.0, this is a review of the 3.5 book. It's nothing short of stellar. The combat rules and ability rules are concise and full-featured. There is plenty of room for expansion by the DM to cover all the scenarios, and there are few loop-holes for the characters to exploit. The book itself is about 50 spells, so the rich fantasy capabilities are still in this version, and the weapons and fighting rules are thoroughly explained. These revised editions also contain bonus content, such as new feats, that are exclusive to these editions. Overall changes to all the titles include making complex combat easier to understand and provide more information on interacting with and summoning monsters. Specific changes include the following: the Player's Handbook received revisions to character classes to make them more balanced, and there are revisions and additions to spell lists. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. It's never been easier to create and role-play a heroic human ranger, cunning elf wizard, or any other fantasy character from the game's 7 races and 11 classes. Gone are almost all the old restrictions on race and alignment. Halfling sorcerers, half-orc paladins, dwarf barbarians, and gnome monks are now possible. THACO, negative armor class, funky saving throws, inflated ability scores, heat-based infravision, and just about every other needlessly complex rule has been reworked into a faster, more consistent, and more fun system. Players can choose unique special abilities for their characters as they gain levels, which means that even two fighters of the same race and class can have very different abilities. The end result of all these changes is a dynamic game with more customized characters. Almost every page has some form of new artwork, and the art almost always serves to explain a concept or illustrate a point. The book is filled with example montages that help to show the difference between human, half-elf, and elf, or relative size differences between creatures, or what the various levels of cover and concealment look like. These illustrations make the rules much more clear. The rules are fast and clear, and the characters--including the new sorcerer class and the return of the monk, barbarian, and half-orc--are fabulous.Full content visible, double tap to read brief content. Miranda Whitehead 4.0 out of 5 stars It's practically the same book, only with several different pictures in it. You don't need any other book (the Dungeon Master, or DM, is the only one who needs the DMG). All the other books are just icing and flavor. The DM might want to own a Monster Manual or two, but all they have are stats for monsters if the DM feels like being lazy and doesn't make up the stats on his own. Some people prefer having all those rules and stats handy, some don't want or need them. It's up to the DM to decide that. But the bottom line is this: everyone that wants to play needs this book. It has stats for your character's class as you progress through the levels, as well as feats, skills, spells and their descriptions for when they do level up.It was in really great shape. The only bad point is it did not come with the first edition video. But that's okay, I'll get one some time. This book is very interesting because it goes into great detail on how to go about building your character and the basics that make the game easier for the new guys (and gals) to get up to speed. The illustrations are awesomely detailed. Also shows you how to prepare a proper sheet and binder composition. For ANY someone that is trying to just jump in there and start playing (like me) will really benefit by going through this beginner's guide. It was very helpful in understanding the uses of magic, stamina, vulnerability, intelligence, etcetera, of each race. It really help me grasp the concept. It also enlightened me as to how intricate and complicated this game truly is. And by what I have found, it is more popular than ever. I read that there was a new D20 3.0, it was nicer and great quality, but still basically the same. I will probably get that one as well. I was very pleased with this book. EVERYONE that loves gaming needs to get into this. What hooked me was the fact that you don't necessarily need a gaming console to play one of the greatest games ever.I primarily bought this book because I am a huge 3.x edition fan. However, while the majority of this book is fantastic, be careful when selecting a seller. Other than the minor damage 5o the cover, the only thing to watch out for in 2021 is name within the inside cover. My suggestion would be to put your name on the book using some sort of sticker. The first impression a veteran gamer will have is that the visuals, the feel of the game have been given a major upgrade. Quality art and image are a definite plus in the RPG world and this book's art and layout is a major leap from such dismal products as the previous version of the Player's Handbook. Diving into the rules, it becomes immediately apparent that making the game simpler and faster was a major priority. All classes now advance in levels at the same rate. Character attributes have been streamlined, the original six saving throws have been cut to three intelligently defined categories. Combat now has one (1!) initiative roll for an entire encounter. Annoying complexities like weapon speeds and size-based damage have been eliminated. Combat encounters will no longer bog down on die rolls and flipping through tables, although players will very likely be asking for more time to consider the many more tactical options they now have. The flexibility of the new rules is almost alarming. The combat tactics and feats in the Third Edition emphasize trade-offs. If a high level fighter wants to use all of the attacks he is allowed in a round, his movement is restricted. If a person chooses to switch weapons in combat they must now consider how they switch (sheath the old weapon, or drop it?) and what they switch to (missile weapon. Gain attribute points as you increase levels, multi-class as you go along. It makes a DM's head spin. The clarity of the rules, particularly in a topic as historically dreadful as spells is very impressive. While I am certain that my players will (as ever) come up with exotic ways of twisting a particular spell description, it is gratifying to see that spell descriptions have been made less ambiguous. They are an unfortunate and necessary workaround the release schedule of TSR. It is aggravating to read the section disclaimer and think that these pages in your brand-new book might contain rules that will be superceded, or discarded as soon as next month. That aside, as a veteran of eighteen years of campaigning, I'm thrilled to have the new edition Player's Handbook on the shelf. It's a revision that will add new players to the fold, and serve as a shot in the arm for long-time gamers.Condition stated was very good but when it arrived there was a lot of staining in the first 20 pages, apart from that, we are thoroughly happy with the purchase. For those who have played this game for a while know, the evolution of the rules structure has been a constant effort to make it more, well, real - to make battle sequences, movements, initiative, spellcasting, and all of the other nuances work together in a cohensive and realistic fashion. Certainly, it can never be perfect - there are compromises. But this was the closest means ever accomplished. In my humble, and hard tested opinion, 4th Edition was a step back into lunacy. I like RPGs that use skills rather than just using attack and fighting skills the whole time. That said, my biggest qualms about the game are some of the character classes. The Druid PC can do everything the Ranger can do (almost) and gets an animal and spells before the Ranger. The Druid is too powerful and the Ranger not enough. I am mad that a measley Druid can entangle my Ranger and then just kill her if she wants. What gives? What happened to the Ranger as fighter. Why gods, why!? Next time I am giving the Ranger d10 HP. I love version 3.5 of the Players Handbook. It is in a great format and is relatively easy to understand. The rules are mostly straightforward, and there are some really nice illustrations. I tried to get into the 4th version, but it was just too different for me. I am not a fan of the tiefling and dragonborn being regular races and gnomes becoming monsters, among many other problems I won't get into. Even veteran players can learn something new from this book. Well, you need this book if you plan to play a 3.5e game of Dungeons and Dragons. Information is layed out very well, relatively easy to follow and understand (though I recommend bookmarking the grapple rules - you'll need to refer to them if it ever comes up.If you care about the art, it is very good in my humble opinion. But most importantly, this is the core book for players of DnD. Verisign. You can obtain the core rule books as well as the multiple game supplements released during version 3.5s run. What are the core Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 game books? In 2003, Wizards of the Coast released three books that added to or adjusted their then-current third edition rules set. The company, which had obtained the fantasy game of dungeon crawlers and monster encounters from the original publisher, Tactical Studies Rules (TSR), had released a new version of the game based on the d20 System only three years previously. In-house gameplay, as well as player feedback, indicated the need for multiple rule changes. More rules were added at this time, too. The three core books released in 2003 were the following: 17524 Players Handbook (v. 3.5). 17752 Dungeon Masters Guide (v. 3.5). 17755 Monster Manual (v. 3.5). What are some of the corrections added to version 3.5? After the core book releases, multiple corrections were made by WotC in officially released errata. For example, the druids animal companion was renamed Wild Shape and gained the ability to use the druids equipment to meld into its new form. The spell level for a paladins special mount was defined as one-third of the characters class level. General rules for attacking during a charge and running were corrected. Multiple issues with spells were also addressed. In 2003, the Complete Warrior was published. The following year produced the Complete Divine as well as the Complete Arcane. The only release in 2005 was the Complete Adventurer. In 2006, the Complete Psionic was followed by the Complete Mage. Finally, in 2007, the Complete Scoundrel and the Complete Champion appeared. Were many modules released for Dungeons and Dragons 3.5? At least 30 game adventures were released for version 3.5 play. The total number varies based on a collectors view of what are considered official d20 System releases. Characters could fight through single titles like Deep Horizon.
