S 66 versus ? for Problem 5.8 V ariation of E x versus.Modified models for composite modulus, in a direction transverse to the fibers, are also presented by Voyiadjis and Kattan (2005):.. The general equation for micromechanics modeling of composite modulus is given in equation (12). The modulus was obtained as the slope of the linear part of the stress-strain curve. Selected micromechanics models were used for composite modulus prediction and their closeness to the experimental value was studied using the R 2 obtained from regression of the two data points. The micromechanics models studied did not adequately model the Composite behavior, a new micromechanics model obtained by modifying the Halpin-tsai equation which gave a better fit was proposed in this study. The modified model presented in this work is recommended for prediction of composite modulus for natural fiber based composites especially after further improvement by adjusting the model parameters: A,.View Show abstract. In each section, along with the aerodynamic loads and the geometrical properties, the values of axial and shear stresses in the plane were calculated. In this sense, the stresses found at each point were compared with the allowable stresses of the material, obtaining the index value, by eq.. Wing Structural Optimization for Electric Distributed Propulsion Aircraft using Genetic Algorithm Conference Paper Full-text available Nov 2020 Bruno Oliveira Helio Pegado The search for less polluting means of transport has been stimulating the development of batteries with higher energy densities and electric motors that are more efficient. These advances have made possible the emergence of several all-electric aircraft, which make use of multiple rotors. In this sense, there was a need to create a methodology to be followed in the conceptual design phase, focused on aerodynamic and structural issues that change in this type of aircraft. These changes, such as the lack of a Gravity Center shift and the need for a greater number of engines and rotors, alters the spar, the aerodynamic flow, the number of ribs and the stiffness of the wing itself. In this study, the engines are distributed along the wing, aiming greater traction and less variation in the angle of attack along the wingspan. An aerodynamic model was created with these requirements, based on the lift line theory, in order to calculate the flight load. Finally, using these values, employing routines of genetic algorithms, the structure was optimized, adopting the spar geometry and thickness as design variables, with the objective of minimizing weight, following the Tsai-Wu criterion and the impossibility of buckling. The elastic constants of unidirectional composites can be calculated by using the Rule of Mixtures. 22 In equation (4), T k is the transformation matrix from local to global coordinate system, as shown below 20 where l i,m i and n i (i ? 1, 2, 3) are direction cosines between the local coordinate axes and the global coordinate axes, respectively. Direction cosines are given by l i.In this study, the carbon-fiber-reinforced carbon matrix composite wear rates are experimentally measured, and a formula for the carbon-fiber-reinforced carbon matrix composite wear rates and material design parameters (orientation angles and densities) and operating parameters (load and velocities) is fitted as an input to the wear simulation. A finite element incremental wear simulation procedure for the pin-on-disk wear problem is presented by calculating the local nodal wear rate and wear direction and by introducing the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian adaptive meshing method. In the procedure, the relation between the anisotropy of carbon-fiber-reinforced carbon matrix composite and the varied orientation angle is considered. Results show that the calculated wear volume agrees well with the experimental data. And then the numerical methodology is utilized to investigate the effects of time, orientation angle and operating conditions on the disk wear. The developed numerical methodology could be applied to other sliding wear problems in engineering machinery. View Show abstract. However, due to the fact that a space for a bottle with compressed air is provided inside, it has a high central tunnel. It is made out of epoxy-carbon composite. The structural analysis of the structure is presented. Issues such as stack up of fibers and composite-metal connections are described. Forces and load cases provided by authors are performed in finite element analysis software. View Show abstract. Those material systems exhibit improved properties that are of interest to many industries including automotive, aerospace, medical and many others. The improved thermal, electrical and mechanical properties provide engineers and scientists the ability to think of unique design and multi-functional capabilities that were not possible previously. One of the main inhibitors in utilizing these materials especially in the aerospace industry is the long and expensive process of qualifying a material system. Thousands of tests will typically need to be complete in order to understand the materials performance under different environmental and load conditions in addition to understanding any unique design methodology employed using this material. This study sheds light on the utilization of multiscale analysis in order to compute allowables that can be used to supplement the qualification testing which can ultimately reduce the time required for material qualification and expediting material insertion into production. In addition, this approach provides additional insight into the material behavior that is difficult to measure explicitly via tests. It was shown that information from the molecular dynamics level can be used as input to continuum level analysis to generate virtual allowables of the material. The study also concluded that the change of thermal expansion as a function of temperature can have a large impact on the allowable which ultimately impacts the margins of safety compute for the detailed part. It is recommended that analyst take this into consideration especially when dealing with critical primary structure parts. View Show abstract. Several carpet plots were also conducted to show the interacting behavior of two independent variables such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and shear modulus. Therefore, this book aims to provide an up-to-date comprehensive overview of the current status in this field to the research community. The contributing authors combine structural analysis, design and optimization basis of composites with descriptions of the implemented mathematical approaches. Each chapter offers detailed information on the related subject of its research with the main objectives of the works carried out as well as providing a comprehensive list of references that should provide a rich platform of research to the field of optimum composite structures. I used this book in conjunction with Robert Jone's Mechanics of Composite Materials book. This book provided a more modern approach to the analysis of orthotropic laminates because it integrates computer solutions into the problem sets. Whereas Jone's book is more of a classical approach but with beautiful explanations of the physics. Pros: The book presented many good logical charts on the process of composite laminate anlaysis. Many which could easily be used to write computer programs for determining the laminate stiffness matrices. The example problems in the book were plentiful and detailed enough so the reader could see the immediate application of the material. The author also has good problems sets in the book which help reinforce the key concepts, and solutions are provided in the back of the book. Cons: The notation used in the book was a bit different from what the industry standard is for composite material directions. Most textbooks use an index notation to denote directions, this book preferred to use L, T, (Longitudinal, Transverse) indices which is okay, but for practical use almost no one uses that. More information on joint design and bearing bypass solutions could have been included in this book. The problems at the end of the chapter often need other reference material to be able to be solved. It had a lot of detail explanations of the important concepts and I felt that the book adequately explained and presented details in easy to understand ways. The book has been a great resource and the pages are becoming well worn. I haven't yet found anything grievously wrong with the facts presented. In the field of civil structures, a few attempts have been done to replace the most common composites (e.g. carbon and glass fibers) by materials less harmful to the environment, as natural fibers. This work presents a comprehensive experimental research on the mechanical performance of natural fibers for the strengthening of masonry constructions. Flax, hemp, jute, sisal and coir fibers have been investigated both from physical and mechanical points of view. The fibers with better performance were tested together with three different matrices (two of organic nature) in order to produce composites. All rights reserved.
