The service procedures often skip over small steps that the pro performs without even thinking about it. The illustrations are usually good, but lack fine detail that would help the first time or Do-It Yourself (DIY) mechanic. As an example, my TM1003 NV4500 Transmission Service Manual has 116 pages and over 400 color photographs plus very detailed rebuild and technical information to cover rebuilding a NV4500 5 Speed Manual Transmission. The Dodge Factory Service Manual coverage includes a few dozen line drawings spread over about 40 pages. On the other hand, the Dodge Factory Manual pages include transmission removal and installation information which my TM1003 does not. Tech Note 2: 1994-2002 Changes For the 1994 model year, Dodge introduced a radically redesigned Ram full size pickup that received cab and front fender styling cues from the original WWII era Dodge Power Wagon. Dodge also dropped the D for 4x2 and W for 4x4 model prefix for 1994, effective with the 1994 model year the prefix RAM is used for all full size models. Tech Note 3: 1994-2002 Front Axles From 1994 to 2001, all Ram 4x4 models were equipped with coil front springs and Dana Spicer solid, Front Beam-design Iron (FBI) drive axles with vacuum controlled Central Axle Disconnect (CAD). For 2002, the Ram 1500 4x4 has a new body style with torsion bars and Independent Front Suspension (IFS). GVW) 1994-1997 Ram 2500: Dana 60 248 FBI (8800 lb. Through their production, the full-size vans were sold under several different nameplates. Most examples were sold by the Dodge division, although rebadged versions were sold by the now-defunct Fargo and Plymouth divisions. For 2003, DaimlerChrysler introduced the Dodge Sprinter (produced by Mercedes-Benz ), making the B-platform van the last full-size van designed by Chrysler; Ram Trucks currently markets the Ram ProMaster (a rebadged Fiat Ducato). The resulting lower center of gravity improved handling versus the competing products. The B-series van was popular for cab-over motorhome conversion until Chrysler Corporation's egress from that market during their financial difficulties in the late 1970s.The most pronounced changes were to the front fenders, hood, grille, and bumpers, which tended to follow their full-size truck counterparts in each era. Additionally, the first generation's side door was mounted back several inches, using a fixed panel between the passenger's side front door and the side door, allowing for more access to the side door without interfering with the front passenger's seat. This panel was eliminated in 1978 which was a transitional year for the B-series van. Similar construction for the entire 32 years of production made the Dodge Van very popular with upbuilders, service companies, and other fleets due to the compatibility of installable options from year to year without necessitating a redesign. With the Sprinter, Chrysler shifted from American-style full-sized vans in favor of more fuel-efficient European-style models. The rest of the Big Three took their shortest full-size vans off the market early in the 1990s. All American vans are now produced with wheelbases proportional to the body length (i.e. made longer to match van size), rather than a fixed length that does not change with body or roof size extensions (as with the E-series and Ram vans).Sportsman passenger vans had side windows and passenger seating not present in the otherwise identical Tradesman models. The same range of gasoline-powered slant-6 and V8 engines was offered in these vans as was offered in the Dodge D Series pickup truck.Ford did not produce a 15-passenger van until 1978, and GM did not introduce theirs until 1990. Little changed on Dodge vans produced between 1971 and 1977, with only a grille change from metal to plastic for the 1974 model year. 1978 was a transition year for B series vans, consisting of the nose from 1977 and earlier vans (with a one-year only Dodge symbol in the grille) but with a completely new dashboard and rear end cap. On the standard length vans, the rear end cap just contained new larger tail lamps, but the extended length Maxivan and Maxiwagon had a completely redesigned rear extension which was longer and had large windows that wrapped around the corners for better visibility. This was unique to the B vans, and this same extension was used until the B vans were discontinued in 2003. Passenger models had a small window between the front and rear doors. Early 1971 vans had black plastic door push buttons, an inlaid pentastar logo low right front fender, drum brakes and points type ignition. 1972 model year began a phase in of chrome door push buttons, electronic ignition, and front disc brakes. In 1978, the filler panel was removed and the doors were moved forward to be next to the front passenger door, similar to the Ford and Chevrolet vans. This package was available from the 1976 model year until it was discontinued in the early 1980s.Plymouth also received a rebadged variant of the Sportsman, called the Voyager for the 1974 model year. While never as popular as the Dodge version, Plymouth marketed the Voyager in this format through 1983, after which the nameplate was transferred to the new minivan that was introduced for 1984 as a rebadged Dodge Caravan.Lower-end models had single round headlights, while Royal Sportsman and other high-end vans received four rectangular headlights. The van would keep this body style and the 1978 dash intact with only grille changes all the way through the 1993 model year. The Sportsman, Tradesman, and Adventurer names were phased out after 1980, replaced with the Ram van moniker, which included the Ram wagon for passenger models. The body shell and most fixtures would be one of the longest running of any US vehicle, remaining nearly identical from the vans' introduction in 1971 through their discontinuance in 2003, while Ford and GM would go through two or three generations of platform redesigns. Kentron Inc. build exclusively on Dodge chassis doing Van conversion. Each will be marked with the conversion model plaque and a badge. In 1994 the entire front end was redesigned with flush headlamps to resemble the all-new Dodge Ram pickups, and new taillights wrapped around the sides of the van. The 1978-style dash was kept. The 1978-style dash was kept. In 1998, the van went through the most thorough update since its introduction in 1971. The engine was moved forward in the chassis to improve crash protection, and the front end sheet-metal was redone with a longer nose to accommodate this change. Moving the powertrain forward also resulted in a smaller dog house (engine access cover) which increased front interior room and allowed better access when moving between the front seats. The 1978-style dashboard and door panels were finally replaced in the 1998 model year with a modern design using components from contemporary Chrysler products. The side-view mirrors were now break-away units mounted to the sail portion of the front window openings. This change resulted in the elimination of the front door vent windows. The van remained mostly unchanged until it was discontinued after the 2003 model year, ending production that June. Archived from the original on 2013-03-09. Retrieved 2012-10-10. Not only did the new Ram hold a driver-side airbag, it could be equipped with a V10 engine, developing 300 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Short-bed Rams had a 118.7-inch wheelbase and 6.5-foot cargo bed. Long-bed models rode a 134.7-inch wheelbase with 8-foot bed. Lowest-priced Ram was the Work Special 1500. Higher-cost versions were named LT, ST, and Laramie SLT. Rear-wheel antilock braking was standard; 4-wheel ABS optional on 1500 and 2500 models, operating in both 2WD and 4WD.They were equipped at ST level, with the Laramie SLT their only major option package. The Club Cab’s 3-place rear bench seat can be folded against the rear of the cab for extra cargo room. Cummins turbodiesel engines gained power. Club Cab (extended cab) models get dark tinted glass for the rear quarter window and optional sliding rear window. Also new was a passenger-side airbag that could be disabled. A new SLT Plus luxury package, optional on Quad Cabs, included power heated leather seats, a CD player with steering-wheel audio controls, and keyless entry with a security alarm. All models now had a standard tachometer and underhood light. A 220-horsepower, 5.2-liter V8 went into 4x4s and 2500-series Rams, and was optional in 1500-series. A 230-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 was standard in 3500-series, optional in others. A 5-speed manual gearbox and 4-speed automatic transmission were available. Ram 4x4s used on-demand, part-time 4WD (not for dry pavement), with automatic-locking hubs and shift-on-the-fly capability. A burly Cummins turbodiesel is also available, but not too many folks really need that much pull. You don’t get neck-snapping pickup with the V10, but it does propel the Ram with more authority than any V8, and generates less noise than expected. Gas mileage is dismal, however: just 10 mpg in mostly city travel. A turbodiesel delivered 14.6 mpg, but is slower in standing-start acceleration than a gas engine, and idles as roughly as a big rig. Turns may be taken with good grip and balance, and gusty crosswinds have little effect on directional stability. Ride quality in a 2500-series is undeniably stiff. Four-wheel antilock braking brings this pickup to a halt with fine control. Engine and road noise are modest for a truck, but wind roar around front roof pillars is a problem. The seatback center folds into an armrest that doubles as a compartmented console. Opening the large padded lid to gain access to the compartments, however, is not so easy while driving. Three can sit abreast in the back of a Club Cab, but the seat cushion is too short to offer real thigh support, and rear leg room is no better than in a compact car. Three simple knobs operate the climate control. Most controls are lit at night. A slide-out holder is big enough to carry two 16-ounce beverage containers, but it obstructs the radio controls when in use. With the exception of Value, these numbers reflect how the vehicle compares against the universe of vehicles, not just against rivals in its class. Lower is better) A check valve in the fluid line leading to the transmission cooler will fix the problem. (1994) The airbag-warning lamp will illuminate on the instrument panel. Dealers will inspect and replace affected parts. If the retractor does not work properly, it will not adequately protect occupants in the event of a crash. Dealers will replace affected clockspring assemblies. Owners will receive instructions for removing the circuit breaker from the fuse panel. Dealers will inspect affected vehicles. I’m leaning towards a short in the circuit, or a bad ECM possibly, but before I start really getting into this thing I wanted to get some suggestions. And I’m kinda banking it’s going to be a main power with a bad or weak connection or a ground wire maybe back feeding somewhere. If that’s all good, then move on to checking primary power and ground connections at the fuse block for the same conditions. I did run the battery pretty dead last night messing with it, jumped it off my truck and it cranked good and had full power at least according to the gage.I’m gonna stop by the parts store after work this afternoon and grab a few of the 20A fuses and make sure it has all its fuses because I was doing some google-fu this morning, and it seems that the circuit controlling the fuel pump has a lot of parts to it that require proper voltage, I may have created an open connection somewhere by swapping fuses around and not having all the fuses it calls for in that distribution block. I pulled it out of the truck to inspect it on the bench, noticed the smell of electronics that’ve seen better days, so I cracked it open and 2 out of 3 capacitors were bulged and the coatings were melted nicely.I’ll post back when I make some more progress. I’m thinking the problem is in the ASD side of the circuit, but I’m at a loss on what to check or how to check it. Some of them disable the vehicle by intercepting the power to the fuel pump and if it is fried it could explain all the issues your having. I’m really at a loss on this one, electronics are like brain surgery to me. What kind of draw is the system showing. I have a 96 Ram 5.2l, I would do an electrical Diag to see if it has any shorts or look for exposed wiring under the dash or hood. I’ve been tracing wires and looking at grounds.Putting the higher amp rated fuse is prolly what fried the ECU. If a fuse blows it is generally a good idea to figure out what is causing it before replacing it. If it were my truck I would get a wiring diagram and figure out EVERYTHING that is on that circuit and do a continuity test from the load to the NEG batt terminal for everything on that circuit. Hopefully it is JUST the fuel pump on that circuit and that makes it much easier to troubleshoot. I can almost guarantee something on that circuit is shorting and causing all the issues. Getting the wiring diagram is the key. The power side of the fuel pump circuit itself seems to be the likely culprit for a short to ground. It’s also possible that the fuel pump itself is shorted out. The fuel pump power wire is dark green with a black tracer on it and it’s the same color from the relay all the way to the pump if I can trust my wiring diagram. The first place I’d look for a short is at any main harness looms that get close to the exhaust manifolds. The only reason why is I’ve had a couple experiences with burnt harnesses off the manifolds specifically on the 5.2’s.
