Visit our geoenergy hub to learn more about our work uncovering new, greener ways to harness Earth's power resources, including geothermal energy, solar power, biofuels, and more. Some of those problems are addressed by pre-professional and professional programs offered in this and others departments of the College of Natural Resources and the Environment. However, other problems require the professional ability to integrate science, technical management, and social organization in effective programs and actions. Such problems include, for example, planning and managing coastal zone, rural areas, wetlands, and other water resources. In Natural Resource Studies (NAREST), conserving and managing resources is considered an interdisciplinary effort; thus, individuals with differing strengths may develop course specialties in environmental fields such as aquatic resources, ecology, human dimensions, natural areas management, and impact assessment. These fields and others may be approached with an emphasis on science, technical management, administration, social policy and action, law, and communications. Individual curriculum planning based on personal career goals, talent, and interest is a special characteristic of the NAREST program. Further, the program is designed for maximum flexibility within the 120 credits required for graduation. A minimum of 47 course credits are selected by the student. Students who wish to prepare for entry to graduate school from this curriculum should make the decision early and work closely with their adviser. Specifically, students should identify their professional goal and determine requirements for entry into a specific graduate program. Students must define their own objectives. Some potential graduate programs for which this major is an effective base are: regional planning, law, conservation education, journalism, resource planning, and public administration.http://www.aqualife.fi/userfiles/file/eutech-tn100-manual.xml There is an increasing role for people interested in conserving, managing and restoring our natural environment. Some graduates pursue employment directly in natural resources and other graduates use their strong academic training to pursue other fields. With a specific objective in mind, a NAREST major could also elect to build an individualized and flexible combination of courses in order to qualify for a wide variety of graduate school programs. Some students pursue graduate school to strengthen their specialized knowledge in a particular discipline. Students may also qualify to take federal civil service exams for entering positions in fields such as botany, fisheries, forestry, soil science, wildlife and zoology. Students should be aware that many federal agencies now require an advanced degree. Students may incorporate their natural resource interests in careers such as: The program offers curriculum opportunities for students interested in generalist approaches to resource conservation and management, as well as opportunities for unique, focused, and specialized curriculum plans. Students may, in consultation with their adviser, plan to enter certain pre-professional specialties or prepare for graduate school. Natural Resources Studies program mission, goals, and objectives: When students graduate from UMass Amherst with a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources Studies, they will be able to help guide the stewardship of healthy and sustainable ecosystems that provide important human and community benefits. In particular, they will know how to: Communicate to the public that natural resource conservation is essential to long-term sustainability. All majors must take NRC 409 Natural Resources Policy and Administration, NRC 382 Human Dimensions of Natural Resource Management, and NRC 549 Ecosystem Management, and fulfill the Junior Year Writing requirement. Restrictions Courses to be counted in the NAREST program must be taken on a graded basis. Investigative phenomena within the lessons connect back to the issue and storyline. Examples explored include human use of oil, gas, mineral, and fresh water resources to meet human needs. Why do some places have more of certain natural resources than others. How important are natural resources to people? Using one of SEPUP's Third Edition units gives teachers an exemplary context for teaching with the NGSS. Plus, being able to have it all in one neat package (quite literally with the carts) is one of the best bonuses of this program. Please try your request again later. Why did this happen. This includes the sources of valued characteristics such as commercial and industrial use, aesthetic value, scientific interest and cultural value.Forest provides timber for humans, food, water and shelter for the flora and fauna tribes and animals. The nutrient cycle between organisms form food chains and foster a biodiversity of species. Waterfalls provide spring water for humans, animals and plants for survival and also habitat for marine organisms. The water current can be used to turn turbines for hydroelectric generation. Ocean waves can be used to generate wave power, a renewable energy source. Ocean water is important for salt production, desalination, and providing habitat for deep-water fishes. There is biodiversity of marine species in the sea where nutrient cycles are common. An example of a non-renewable natural resource. Natural resources are materials and components (something that can be used) that can be found within the environment. Every man-made product is composed of natural resources (at its fundamental level). A natural resource may exist as a separate entity such as fresh water, air, as well as any living organism such as a fish, or it may exist in an alternate form that must be processed to obtain the resource such as metal ores, rare-earth elements, petroleum, and most forms of energy. This is particularly true during periods of increasing scarcity and shortages ( depletion and overconsumption of resources ).These include the source of origin, stage of development, and by their renewability.Fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum are also included in this category because they are formed from decayed organic matter. Examples of abiotic resources include land, fresh water, air, rare-earth elements, and heavy metals including ores, such as gold, iron, copper, silver, etc. Considering their stage of development, natural resources may be referred to in the following ways:Some of these resources, like sunlight, air, wind, water, etc.Though many renewable resources do not have such a rapid recovery rate, these resources are susceptible to depletion by over-use. They replenish easily compared to non-renewable resources. Minerals are the most common resource included in this category. Some resources naturally deplete in amount without human interference, the most notable of these being radio-active elements such as uranium, which naturally decay into heavy metals. Extraction Edit This can range in scale from the traditional use of preindustrial societies to global industry. Extractive industries are, along with agriculture, the basis of the primary sector of the economy. Extraction produces raw material, which is then processed to add value. Examples of extractive industries are hunting, trapping, mining, oil and gas drilling, and forestry.People often accuse extractive industry businesses as acting only to maximize short-term value, implying that less-developed countries are vulnerable to powerful corporations. Alternatively, host governments are often assumed to be only maximizing immediate revenue. Researchers argue there are areas of common interest where development goals and business cross. Norway can serve as a role model in this regard as it has good institutions and open and dynamic public debate with strong civil society actors that provide an effective checks and balances system for the government's management of extractive industries, such as the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a global standard for the good governance of oil, gas and mineral resources. The depletion of natural resources is a continuing concern for society. This is seen in the cited quote given by Theodore Roosevelt, a well-known conservationist and former United States president, who was opposed to unregulated natural resource extraction. It states that measures must be taken at all societal levels, from international to individual, to protect nature. Since the development of these documents, many measures have been taken to protect natural resources including establishment of the scientific field and practice of conservation biology and habitat conservation, respectively.Hence, sustainable development is followed according to judicial use of resources to supply both the present generation and future generations. The disciplines of fisheries, forestry, and wildlife are examples of large subdisciplines of natural resource management.A material source of wealth, such as timber, fresh water, or a mineral deposit, that occurs in a natural state and has economic value. Something, such as a forest, a mineral deposit, or fresh water, that is found in nature and is necessary or useful to humans. Any source of wealth that occurs naturally, especially minerals, fossil fuels, timber, etc. Retrieved May 31, 2014. Sunderland, Massachusetts. Springer Verlag. p. 478. ISBN 978-1-4020-6890-4. We depend on the Earth both as a place to live and as a resource for almost all aspects of our lives. As we are facing some of the biggest challenges in human history, we strongly depend on forming a better understanding of the Earth and finding ways to use its resources more efficiently and responsibly. Science can help us with these challenges. This section of Frontiers for Young Minds includes articles that span from the understanding of our home planet, including earth science, marine science, climate science, and environmental science, to our use of its resources, including agricultural sciences, sustainable and environmental engineering, energy and renewable energy, green chemistry, innovative materials, and sustainability science. As many of these areas are underpinned and strongly linked to the broader chemical and physical sciences as well as engineering, articles from scientists across subject areas in these disciplines, whose work helps to study and explore the earth and its resources, are also included. Earth and its Resources wants to provide the most up-to-date and relevant research to the next generation, who will live on Earth, continue to use its resources, and study present and new planet-wide questions. In our lab, we study the immune system of plants. Learn more about the Stavely Arc, including the minerals exploration areas (blocks) that have been released by accessing maps of the Stavely Ground Release. This ground was released to attract new investment in exploration for minerals such as copper, gold and other metals to the local region. The ground release excludes exploration for coal or gas. By law, minerals exploration and mining is not permitted in National or State Parks or wilderness areas. Exploration for minerals can boost regional economies, whilst readily co-existing with agriculture and tourism. Minerals exploration activities and any further development work must comply with strict legislative and regulatory requirements which ensure that these activities are conducted only where permitted, and in a manner that safeguards the environment, water, heritage and other sensitive features that are important to local communities. To fully understand this potential and to identify areas suitable for minerals exploration, an area of around 20,000 square km within the Stavely Arc was held back from being available for over the counter applications for exploration licences to be made at any time (which is the usual practice in Victoria), whilst further geoscience and land use planning studies were done, and stakeholders in local communities engaged. This work was recently completed and engagement with local communities is continuing. The tender closed on 15 August 2018. Successful tenderers were announced on 22 October 2018. Successful tenderers gained the exclusive right to apply to the department for a minerals exploration licence over a block. Licence applications will be assessed under the standard licensing process outlined in the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990. The Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 outlines the requirements that the applicant must meet to be granted a licence. The department held a competitive tender to encourage the best minerals exploration programs and experienced explorers with good social values and a commitment to working with local communities and landholders. A minerals explorer must have a licence under the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 in place before any exploration activities can occur. Explore the maps of each of the blocks where the six successful companies are seeking an exploration licence. And do I have to allow an explorer onto my property? Name each file with the domain for which you want to provide virtual hosting. See the following example configurations for the hypothetical “example.com” and “example.org” domains. Substitute your own domain names for those shown below. You can symbolically link these directories into other locations if you need them to exist in other places. ErrorLog and CustomLog entries are suggested for more fine-grained logging, but are not required. If they are defined (as shown above), the logs directories must be created before you restart Apache. Before you can use the above configuration, you’ll need to create the specified directories. For the above configuration, you can do this with the following commands. Substitute your own domain names for those shown below. The a2dissite command is the inverse of a2ensite. For example, if you wanted to disable the example.com site, you would issue the following command: a2dissite example.com. You can create as many virtual hosting files as you need to support the domains that you want to host with your Linode. Install and Configure the MySQL Database Server MySQL is a relational database management system (RDBMS) and is a popular component of web development tool-chains. It is used to store data for many popular applications, including WordPress and Drupal. Install MySQL The first step is to install the mysql-server package, which is accomplished by the following command: apt-get install mysql-serverChoose something secure (use letters, numbers, and non-alphanumeric characters) and record it for future reference. At this point MySQL should be ready to configure and run. It is recommended that you answer yes to these options. If you are prompted to reload the privilege tables, select yes.First, log in to MySQL: mysql -u root -pTo create a database and grant your users permissions on it, issue the following command. Note, the semi-colons (; ) at the end of the lines are crucial for ending the commands. Your command should look like this: create database webdata;Note that database user names and passwords are only used by scripts connecting to the database, and that database user account names need not (and perhaps should not) represent actual user accounts on the system. With that completed, you’ve successfully configured MySQL and you may now pass these database credentials on to your users. To exit the MySQL database administration utility issue the following command: quitInstall and Configure PHP PHP makes it possible to produce dynamic and interactive pages using your own scripts and popular web development frameworks. Furthermore, many popular web applications like WordPress are written in PHP. If you want to be able to develop your websites using PHP, you must first install it. Ubuntu includes packages for installing PHP from the terminal. Issue the following command: apt-get install php5 php-pear. These modifications provide a good starting point if you’re unfamiliar with PHP configuration. While these are provided in the hope that they will be useful, please note that we cannot vouch for the accuracy or timeliness of externally hosted materials. I was going to just write a CRONed shell script, but I'm going for broke, and besides PHP is a lot more familiar to me. I guess it would work as follows: The Short answer would be that you have to do two things: 1. Create a.deb package (see the debian package maintainer guide ), 2. Set up a repository which you can add to the sources.list (see how to setup a debian repository ). Hope that gives you some pointers to the right direction. If your target is Ubuntu, I would suggest registering an account at Launchpad.net, and using their built-in PPA facility. If you want to target Linux generally, you should also offer an RPM package. I really didn't know where to start but this gives me some direction. Please be sure to answer the question. Provide details and share your research. It is highly recommended to follow the information on the above link. You may notice that many installation options are not displayed when installing from a package manager. Please note that Moodle 1.9.4 is not compatible with PHP 5.3, so currently (May 2010) installing moodle using apt-get or synaptic won't work. You need to install a more recent version of Moodle or wait until there is a more recent version in the ubuntu 10.4 repository (see ). Of course, an Ubuntu or Kubuntu desktop is easily added to a server (using one of the commands: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop or sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop). From the Ubuntu desktop the command-line interface is reached using Terminal; from a Kubuntu desktop it is reached using Konsole. It requires Apache2, the PHP scripting language, and a database (either MySQL or postgreSQL). While many users feel postgreSQL is a better database, MySQL is more widely used and is easier for first time users (since there are many integrated packages that use it). A LAMP server (Linux, Apache2, MySQL, PHP) can easily be installed from the command-line interface: This will be required during Moodle installation. In general, there are two options: localhost (meaning the database will be located on the same computer on which Moodle will be installed) or a URL. (Of course, the URL could still refer to the same computer). For initial installation, it is easiest to use localhost as the FQDN (and also wherever it is available as an installation option). Now you see why it is better to have an Ubuntu or Kubuntu desktop installed on top of the server). I recommend the unattended installation. The easiest way is to set up a URL for your server so that users can reach Moodle using the URL. Several steps are necessary. It is possible to use a Dynamic DNS server, as well. An example URL is mymoodleserver.dyndns.org. ServerAlias www. mymoodleserver.dyndns.org mymoodleserver.dyndns.org I’m doing my testing on a standard 40GB harddrive and will modify these sizes for production. You will need to re-enter your account password when sudo asks for it. Replace NewMoodleDatabasePassword with a secure password of your own choosing.Enter the password that you just created.
