Fell in love with it. Many fixes at the local Stihl Dealer. Stihl parts became obsolete. Kept it running. Still running!!!!!! Dealer retired. Now it is up to me to keep several 015s running. Need shop manual. Especially rebuild carburetor. Fell in love with it. Need shop manual. Especially rebuild carburetor. Please pass along copies of the manuals. I have a water damaged owners manual, but oddly enough, a mint 1978 receipt from purchase. He got a good offer on it (they also sell well on eBay) but we wanted it to stay in the family, and I'd like to fix it up and use it in his memory. I realize there are better, newer saws out there in some people's opinions, but it seems unless getting into the Stihl Professional saw line the older saws are where the reliability is at. Note: It's the 015, not the 015L The attached service manual is a bit dated, but this saw has been around for awhile. Hope these help B.K. and Southern Boy. I'm used to finding the filter knocking around in the fuel tank, attached to a fuel line-not so on this saw. Chris J. It is no longer possible to order new air filters from Stihl, they are all gone. The fuel filter if it is original will be a rectangular felt attached to the end of the fuel line. Fuel lines are extinct also but there is a way around that. My 015's (4 of them I think) are all old enough to have points which you can still find on the aftermarket. You may have some luck on e-bay. I knew I'd forgotten something and didn't check on the fuel filter. These numbers I'm going to list checked out as good when looking up the price. It's getting fuel; it floods very nicely!!. Does anybody have a parts list that they can post or email. My Stihl service CD doesn't have the 015 listed. The AF isn't like new, but it did cleanup nicely; guess I caught a break there. Thanks again for all input.Chris J. This is what I'm going on at this point. The parts list show air filter with final numbers of 1600 but when trying to go to price the computer says number does not exist.http://aimic.com/userfiles/epson-stylus-7600-service-manual.xml When I referenced my update book which has things like electronic igniton upgrades from points and other items that aren't in the regular parts list, the 1601 number comes up for the filter. I put that number in for a price check and it came up as good. Anyway, will let you know what I find out. They make good 100 yard rifle targets. Just an attempt at humor, no insult intended (don't take me too seriously). I know many enjoy bringing out of date stuff back to life, I'm just one of those that think it is a waste of good effort. Stihl sold a bazillion of 'em and made a lot of repeat customers from them. Simple design and tkaes beating like the battery bunny, can't be all bad. If there's any interest (hah) I'll put it in used equipment. Maybe either a homeowner needing a small saw, or a climber on a budget looking for a backup. My answer is no, not at all. Chris J. The 015 is a funky piece of history and a rugged little bugger. But If I had to choose between the 015 and the 009 I would take the 009. The 009 has more low end grunt and is still in production so parts will be available for a much longer time than the 015 for which some parts are already extinct. Fortunately I am not in a situation where I have to choose and I have collected enough spare parts to keep my 015's running until doomsday. I also don't use a saw to make a living so somtimes will use a saw because it's fun to use though not necessarily the fastest tool for the job. As always all input is appreciated. Paul: I have to say yes, the 009 feels better to me, more comfortable--better design, better engineering??. I was basing my comments on the 015 having a larger engine. And that doesn't mean squat if I don't get it running. Chris J. What this means is that a lot of 015's make a really horrible noise when run bar side down. The flywheel actually rubs on a plastic cover that protects the points. I have one that I got for free because the guy who had just bought it over the internet thought the engine was blown and gave it to me. There was a t.s.b. on this and there are shims to install behind the bearings, this is a little labor intensive. The 015's were a step up to compared to the Homelites in terms of starting and power and reliability, but they were a little on the weak side for doing removals, good trim saws though. I've been watching a few on ebay lately for old time sakes, they bring a decent buck, more than what I paid for my 015's, I was surprised, some went for over a hundred bucks. They had a rear handled 015 on ebay recently, never had one of those, was bidding on it till it went to high for my money. I was after a rear handled ( old style )020 AVP because I never had one of those either, that one I did get and it is a gem of a saw for it's age. Larry My answer is no, not at all. Chris J.This is the difference between work and play. You play with chainsaws not work with them. I liked working on cars a lot more before working for several years as a mechanic. Playing with saws V working with them. If I had to work on saws maybe my perspective would be different. I notice that I'm not the only chainsaw enthusiast on AS who isn't in the tree, timber, or saw business. They are really cool tools. In my youth, things like go-karts and mini-bikes were off limits for a variety of reasons. I never had much in the way of power equipment, I SHOVELED snow, turned the garden with a pitch fork etc, etc. When I got to the point of being able to have power equipment it was usually something that was cast off by its former owner because it needed work. I got satisfaction from bringing the dead back to serviceable life. Chainsaws are the most intriguing to me, such potentially deadly force in a hand held package. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. Have tried by Stihl, but they don't provide such things,so thought I would post it here. Thanks, Mdot I got this little chainsaw from my grandfather over 30 years ago, and it is leaking from where the fuel lines goes in on the bottom side into the tank. Without a manual, I'm not sure how to correct the issue.Hope it helps. Hope it helps. Thanks again! Thanks again! You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. It started developing a ping sounds and would stall out after running 30'sh seconds.I replaced the bearings (gently used from a donor saw) and installed new crank seals. While at it, I installed a new piston ring (light grey scotch bright pad the cylinder wall. With the throttle lock on, 3 pulls on choke to get first cough. If I drop off on the throttle lower than half, it dies. If I turn the H jet more rich and lean the L (trying to get balance). This is my first saw project. I've been reading this site for some time but my first post. I'm new to carb tuning. I'm hoping some experts have a few tips to share. cheers! They're getting kinda hard to find, at least around here. You can try setting the idle first, then if it idles well try the H side for full throttle running, then if you have problems with the transition from idle to high speed just richen the H screw slightly. That would cause problems like that. They're getting kinda hard to find, at least around here. You can try setting the idle first, then if it idles well try the H side for full throttle running, then if you have problems with the transition from idle to high speed just richen the H screw slightly.Following the Walbro service manual, I have the Idle screw (top) set at mid point, and both H (high) and L (low) at one turn out from closed. I lock in my throttle open, pull with choke on (closed) until a cough. It picks up RPM and sounds like I'd expect. How do I set the idle first. Try to start it without locking the throttle open (not sure it will fire). Should I move off the 1 turn out default setting to try and get it to idle first. Thanks for any help you can share. Sorry if I'm just confused. That would cause problems like that.My carb kit didn't come with one. I'm probably over invested on the repair already. It's my father in law's saw I'm trying to resurrect for him but it might just be at the end of the road. Many members on these forums have one or two of these things laying around. Maybe one will offer a good one up. Turn it back in until the idle starts to speed back up again. I leave mine on the richer side of the adjustment. From there you can set the High screw. I think the one turn out for both screws is to get it running, not a permanent setting. L8R, Matt It idles fine upon startup and has plenty of power in the cut. The issue with mine is the transition from high back to idle. I have to partly touch the throttle to keep it from dying out. Especially when the engine is warm. Turn the idle speed screw down and try to get the highest idle speed with just the L screw. If it does then leave the L screw alone and set the H screw in a similar way. Do not leave the H screw set at the highest speed, it needs to cut out a bit (4 cycle) when you have it at wide open throttle. It should run smoothly in the cut however. I think I sorted things and thought I'd share my findings.Following the Walbro service manual, I'd originally left it level to the carb body milled metal surface with the spacer gasket, making the lever aligned with the diaphragm plane. I later found a generic Walbro company carb troubleshooting video and they demonstrated setting it level to the metal housing plane (not adding the gasket) so I tried that this time. This basically lowers the lever the thickness of the spacer gasket below the diaphragm. After reassembly, I set the H and L jet's at one full turn out from bottom (per Walbro manual) and attempted to start. I'd get a cough and eventually flooding.By rolling the needles significantly lean (and following the above guidance to start with L and then add H. a must), I was able to get it running much better. Not only did the rebuild address the original issue (failing crank bearings) but the combo of new piston ring and fresh carb rebuild has it running better than ever.Anyway, I appreciate this kind of forum and the community help it provides a novice like me. For those that stumble across this thread down the road, I figured I'd circle back and share the outcome.I have come to the conclusion that mine was basically the clutch. To keep the chain from spinning I was having to run way too lean. When I adjust my other saws I try to run the L in until the saw surges some. Then back it out to a smooth idle (chain will spin yet) Then back out the LA (closes the throttle plate) until you reach the desired idle rpm. I like 2700 for most of mine. Then go back to the L and run it in again then back out and re adjust the LA once more. My thought process here is trying to close the throttle plate as far as possible so your not pulling from both the transition and main circuit at idle. Does that sound right to all the pros out there or am I having the wrong thought process. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. I have a question about the 015L, not the 015 or the 015AV. What is the fuel mix for this model. I recently pick one up and want to try it out but not sure about the fuel mix. Also is there a lead where to down load a manual for this saw. Thanks I have a question about the 015L, not the 015 or the 015AV. Also is there a lead where to down load a manual for this saw. ThanksNot sure how this site works and need more time to find my way around. I did find a place that said to use 25:1 mix but was not sure about that. I had another reply that said the same to use 40:1. I use the orange little bottles from the Stihl dealer for my other stihl saws so that should be ok. Also is there a lead where to down load a manual for this saw. ThanksI've got over 50 saws and currently use around a dozen of them. Some are 50 years old and few are new this year (2 Dolmars and 1 Efco). I'm not going to make a bunch of differnent mixes. Some old saws call for 1 to 16 ratio with standard 30W motor oil. So, 20 to 1 is fine with a better-grade TCW rated oil. The new low-oil mixes are all about EPA emissions and that's all. You're never going to hurt your saw with some extra oil. You might plug a spark-arrestor screen if you got too heavy. Same sort of nonsense with thin motor oil in new cars and pickups. Ford recently did a study and said engine life can be doubled by using heavier oil - but it can't be done due to EPA regs. And since even with thin oil, engines usually outlast warrantees anyway, it's not really an issue. The original Stihl 015 manual reads: For the gasoline-oil mixture use only regular gasoline and a good grade SAE 30 non-detergent motor oil, or use Stihl two-stroke motor oil. When using SAE 30 motor oil, mix at a ratio of 1 to 25. For Sthil two-stroke oil, mix at 1 to 25 when new for break-in for the first five tank fillings. Then mix 1 to 40. Ford recently did a study and said engine life can be doubled by using heavier oil - but it can't be done due to EPA regs. And since even with thin oil, engines usually outlast warrantees anyway, it's not really an issue. It can hit 30 degrees celcius in the summer and minus 30 in the winter here. Every truck, gas and diesel, van, loader, excavator etc runs the same oil. The gas engines have no trouble with the thick oil at all. The company truck I now drive, 2000 f-150, has close to 400 k on it and runs fine. My last truck was an 88 dodge and had 414k when it rusted out, motor was fine. So I believe it when ford says double life with thicker oil.hate those watery looking oils. It can hit 30 degrees celcius in the summer and minus 30 in the winter here. The gas engines have no trouble with the thick oil at all.We had a few Deere 440 and 540 log skidders that had some engine-damage. These are engines left in woods with NO block heaters. And, probably much of the damage was from all the raw ether dumped into the air intakes instead of using the OEM either injectors. To be honest though, how many people want to run a diesel when it's that cold. It's hard enough just keeping the fuel from gelling. A road-truck is one thing the recirculates fuel and gives the fuel a little warmth. Probably also gets parked with a block heater plugged in. Stuff that must be started when left outside and it's that cold, ought to have 0-grade synthetic, just be safe. 15W-40 petro-based oil is fine to 20-25 F below, but no colder. 5W-40 synthetic oil is good to 38F below. 0W-40 synthetic oil is good to 54F below. And then there are the two-stroke Detroits that don't allow any multi-visc oils last I checked. No ether except in an emergency. Just isn't worth it.fuel gelling can be controlled with additives, but why is it that if you use ether once in an engine, seems like you have to use it every time from then on ??? Take Deere for example. Deere puts ether injectors on just about all the industrial and forestry equipment. These injectors send ether through a small orifice and directly into the air-intake. The orifice helps protect the engine from damage. Problem is, many people don't use it and just spray ether into the air-cleaner or intake instead. Even worse is when ether is used in in-direct injected diesels which will crack the pre-combustion chambers. Controlled-ether use is for direct-injected diesels, not IDI. Uncontrolled isn't really good for any of them. Also I did go to the manual site you said to check for a manual for this saw but found nothing but other people asking the same question as me.
