It is universally acknowledged as an extraordinarily authoritative, comprehensive, and practical tool, providing its users with the most fundamental and essential aspects of sophisticated manufacturing practice. It is the essential reference for Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineers, Designers, Draftsmen, Toolmakers, Machinists, Engineering and Technology Students, and the serious Home Hobbyist. Numerous major sections have been extensively reworked and renovated throughout, including Mathematics, Mechanics and Strength of Materials, Properties of Materials, Dimensioning, Gaging and Measuring, Machining Operations, Manufacturing Process, Fasteners, Threads and Threading, and Machine Elements. The metric content has been greatly expanded. Throughout the book, wherever practical, metric units are shown adjacent to the U.S. customary units in the text. Many formulas are now presented with equivalent metric expressions, and additional metric examples have been added. The detailed tables of contents located at the beginning of each section have been expanded and fine-tuned to make finding topics easier and faster. The entire text of this edition, including all the tables and equations, has been reset, and a great many of the figures have been redrawn. The page count has increased by nearly 100 pages, to 2,800 pages. Updated Standards. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. James 3.0 out of 5 stars Is it as good as my 24th edition. It's close, but no. Is it good enough for daily use? Probably. The text has gone from unreadable in the first printing to tolerable in the second. I've spent quite a bit of time today looking at various pages, and while distracting, the text from following pages doesn't completely overwhelm what you are trying to read. We shall see over time, but for the moment the larger text wins out over the tiny text in my 24th edition. The large print book will be kept with me at work and my old book will go in my toolbox at home. Use your own judgement before buying this book. Take a look at the photos I have uploaded and see for yourself if the bleed through is more distracting than you can accept. I've changed the number of stars in the review from one to three. It has served me well over the years but I wanted to give myself a treat this year and buy the updated version. I went with the large print since it was going to be my last one, and I wanted to make it easier on my eyes to read it later in life. I had read that the pages were thinner in the last few editions making it more difficult to read, but I decided to buy it anyway. How bad could it be. Well, I found out how bad. With luck, Amazon will publish my photo on the product page and you can see for yourself how thin the pages are.http://cf-solutions.org/app/webroot/fckeditor/editor/filemanager/connectors/php/img/epson-lq-590-printer-service-manual.xml You can see the back of the page clearly, the front and back of the next page, and sometimes even the next page. This book is vastly more difficult to read than the 24th edition I have, and despite having some additional information I would like to have at my fingertips and the larger type, I just can't keep this book. What good is a reference book if you can't read it. What good is having super thin and super delicate pages on a book that you will use the most. Please, do yourself a favor and find a good used book. The information hasn't changed much, and your eyes will thank you.Is it as good as my 24th edition. The information hasn't changed much, and your eyes will thank you.It takes almost all textbooks I've had for my degree specific classes and compacts the information into 2800 chock filled pages. It will soon be filled with stickies and post its for critical info areas. Equations, stress, strain, deflection, material selection, grades, fasteners, gearing, cross section analysis, conversion tables, machining processes, it's all here. It has earned a permanent spot on my desk at work. I use it every chance I get. Shell out the extra bucks for this thicker page version as I've heard bad things about how bad the page bleed is from the original edition. Every mechanical, design, industrial or process engineer or machinist should have this book on hand!!It takes almost all textbooks I've had for my degree specific classes and compacts the information into 2800 chock filled pages. Every mechanical, design, industrial or process engineer or machinist should have this book on hand!!YES, as it has the essential, and the other stuff would probably only be encountered rarely and usually the product of a sadist professorIt's a solid reference with a ton of data in it. With it handy I feel very confident that I will not be lacking in the details that I might need to look up for the exam. I think its time to upsize this one to a fullsize book. It currently a small paperback size but as thick as two bibles (or 1.75 George R.R. Martin Clash of Kings books for you heathens) with very thin pages. No one is even pretending to slip this in their pocket. Just make it a full size hardback book already and it would be even more useful. So the 30th edition will be full size right!? If it was bigger it would be my backup to the MERM, as it is the pages are so thin and small I cant take notes in it or highlight or anything. This NEEDs to be full size. What a poor quality package however, for all that good content. I heard about the cheap paper of the first printing and took great pains in my search to avoid that, as there are many bad ones for sale that are represented in cagey ways, so buyer beware -- make sure you have the right ISBN number. According to the number, I did get the right version, but it's still not very nice. The one I got (new, Amazon fulfillment) sags as if it had spent 50 years on a shelf with no bookends. As received, the back of the cover has already de-bonded from the page binding. It disgusts me to think of the price paid for a book so cheaply bound. You'll have to have one anyway, I suppose, as there really is no alternative, but regrettably, the binding is not up to the standards of the content.Unfortunately despite being made by a group call Industrial Press, the physical book is not industrial strength. I was assured by the image on the product page that the book I was to receive would have improved paper and such would be printed on the cover. I only have one copy so I can not make a comparison. Nonetheless, I find the paper of this book to be very thin (as in I feel like I need to store the book in a special chamber and touch it only while wearing special gloves). The book has very chunky dimensions (possibly for historical reasons, probably for cost saving reasons), however I believe the book would be much nicer if printed on larger sheets of heavier paper in the fashion of most university textbooks. All in all, this book is a powerful but delicate tool!Expensive, but worth every penny. In regular use. Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page. Seriously disappointed. This is my first machinery's handbook and was so excited to hold it. Cant help but worry about what else is missing from my book. Hope someone makes this right for me. If so I'll update my review. But for now, dissatisfied with the money spent. The replacement book was poor quality as well. Second pic is replacement book and pages are not in order.Goes from page 2812 directly to 2829 as shown in pic. Second pic is replacement book and pages are not in order.I have a number of other thick books with high page counts, and this one doesn't stand out for having markedly thinner pages or more bleed through. The binding, on the other hand, was an intense disappointment. The cover cracked at the spine hinge the very first time I opened the book. I've never seen that on a brand new book before. It usually takes 30 years for the materials to get brittle enough to lead to this. I could get a replacement, but it would likely end the same way, so I guess I'm going with tape.Luckily I usually skip a couple editions each time it's time to repurchase. And boy am I glad I didn't get the 29th!!! This is the BIBLE as far Machinery's Handbook editions are concerned. I use my Machinist Calculator a lot, but sometimes, whilst drinking coffee, and sitting at the bench, there's just something special about leafing though the ol bible and and doing things the old analog way. Also, to me it feels somewhat precious, and even though the book may be used by dirty people, in a dirty place, the reverence for keeping it pristine is palpable and enjoyable. But I digress. As far as, should I buy one for the first time. If I was buying one for the first time, I'd be glad to get this one. I bought from them, more than once now, and they are quick, the item arrives relatively well packaged, and mine was totally new and pristine, so. DO IT.One of my coworkers had this at their desk and I constantly found myself borrowing it so I finally got my own. This is a great reference in a very convenient package. The built in tabs are very nice to have.Something that doesn't actually matter, but I still have an opinion on: Lame cover design. Feels like the Guinness book of world records. Almost bought an old version when it had the nice leather bound covers. Hopefully this one is more durable than I think it will be since I will probably get a lot of use out of it and don't plan on replacing it.At some point, I told him, he'd need this to help him interface with the physical world. (He already has the CRC Handbook of Physics and Chemistry, so that wasn't a possibility) I decided on print rather than electronic or a combination; for people like him and me this is entertaining reading and the print version leads to stumbling into new information whenever you open it. There's really no replacement for this book: If your passion or profession or just interests run into machine tools, processes, materials, etc., you owe yourself a new or used copy.Pages are thin, though probably necessary without making the book twice as thick or half as useful. Problem I have is I was not provided a CD key in my new copy of Machinery Handbook 30, which means it is a paperweight. I was really looking forward to looking up information digitally, but it looks like that is not going to happen. This still has great info but the build quality of the handbook itself has become terrible. Half the pages are already separated from the spine and being held together by what I'm guessing is glue. The old handbooks were much higher quality and whatever updated info they added doesn't seem worth the drop in quality. Will most likely be returning this. This was a new copy. I'm not in a position to return it but it was a bit disappointing really. An unimaginable amount of information! An unimaginable amount of information. We are not affiliated with these companies. At this time, we are thrilled to announce: The new 31st Edition, along with updates of the whole Machinery’s Handbook Product Family, is available! (See below.) The photograph at the right is of his great-great grandson Alex Luchars, the company’s current President and CEO.Machinery focused on industrial metalworking. The editors published articles about making and using various metals. And they provided descriptions of machines and processes. The magazine included diverse advertisements (see the photo at right) for machine tools, sponsored by the fast-growing technology-driven companies that propelled the Industrial Revolution. Throughout, emphasis was placed on the need for pragmatic information. Developing, building, and improving machines, mechanisms, and processes with practical advice was an early recurrent theme. It served the legendary entrepreneurial spirit of young America. Due attention also was paid to the theory and nascent science of mechanical and industrial engineering. Examples include trigonometry, rearrangement and development of formulas, mechanics, strength of materials, threads and fasteners, stamping, welding and cutting, machining of various metals, gear design and manufacture, cutting speeds and feed rates for machining and similar content. These articles appeared in addition to Machinery’s regular application-specific pieces, covering advances in the industrial movement. The data was stored in the company’s file cabinets. We are not certain who gets the credit, but either Luchars, Oberg, or Jones sparked the idea, and the team began to discuss how to further compile and make use of the vast trove of knowledge credited to Luchar’s brainchild, Machinery. In the end, all three men certainly deserve credit, because they collaborated on the original idea for a comprehensive handbook that would benefit the engineering, manufacturing, and metalworking community, while generating profit for the publishing company. At this point, the plan for a handbook included the most useful selections from the available data. The plan became a working project in 1909. In what little time could be spared from editorial work on the magazine, Oberg was placed in charge. Working with Jones over a span of five years, they produced a robust manuscript for the first edition. It was a toolbox-sized volume measuring 4.625 X 7 inches. It was well received, and more than 30,000 copies were sold within the first two years. (Industrial Press is proud to offer a Machinery’s Handbook Collector’s Edition: 1914 First Edition Replica of this landmark work.) Several revised editions were issued in the years following. During World War I, the Handbook was in great demand to serve a global call for machines of war. They featured rounded corners to allow easy insertion into a stout cardboard slip case, designed to preserve the book for many years of service. The edges of the page were hand finished with gold leaf to protect them from soiled fingers seeking references. The title on the cover also was embossed in gold leaf. Because the content was so varied, little attempt was made to arrange it by subject matter. It was thought sufficient to include an extensive index, totaling more than 30 pages and 4,500 references. From these index references, the location of any subject in Machinery’s Handbook could be found. The revised and enlarged 6th edition was published in 1924. The number of pages increased by nearly 200. New material, selected from suggestions made by engineers, shop managers, and skilled workers in the metalworking field, reflected technical developments that had taken place since the last edition. The 6th edition was the first to include thumb index tabs that gave users direct, rapid access to specific subjects. These were instantly popular. The 10th edition, published in 1939, contained 1,816 pages. New and revised material not in the 9th edition consumed over 585 pages. With the start of World War II, there was another spurt in demand. But wartime shortages resulted in production without thumb tabs. This was bemoaned by users (many made their own tabs from adhesive tape). Identical to the traditional 4.6 X 7-inch Toolbox Edition in every way, except size and weight, the Large Print Edition measured 7 X 10 inches (a 140 increase) and weighed nearly 6 pounds. The Large Print Edition remains a top choice for readers. The edition employs a type size the same as standard reference books that is easier to read, yet fits the same page setup as the Toolbox version. This new edition grew by nearly 100 pages to 2,896 pages. It offers major revisions of existing content as well as new material on a variety of topics, including: Expanded metrology section including v-blocks and micrometer, vernier, and dial calipers; n ew fluid power section covering pneumatic, hydraulic, and vacuum theory and applications; new powder metallurgy section, including additive manufacturing; even more useful specs, including tap drill sizes for Unified threads, reaming allowances for drilling, standard mesh and grit sizes, rules for figuring tapers, and assembly with pins and studs. The metric content continued to be expanded. Our editors fine-tuned navigation aids to make it easier to locate information. And many figures were been refined and redrawn for enhanced clarity. Throughout the book, wherever practical, metric units are shown adjacent to the US customary units in the text.In addition, the Machinery’s Handbook, 30th Edition, CD-ROM, includes the complete contents of the Handbook, CD-ROM only material, and the full contents of the Guide to the Machinery’s Handbook. Other products include the popular Pocket Companion and attractive combination packages. Having grown once again by nearly 100 pages and with thousands of revisions and essential updates since the last edition, it includes vital information on basic and crucial aspects of sophisticated manufacturing processes, along with applicable industry standards throughout. This latest, greatest version is the must-have technical resource. These include the content and quick links of the previous CD-ROM versions, but do not require use of a CD-ROM drive for installation (only an Internet connection is needed) and can be used on a PC or Mac desktop or laptop, iPad, iPhone, or Android device. I needed to do the calculations to come up with the developed length for a bending job that I am sending out, because Winn Mfg.I needed to identify it so that I could order the correct replacement. I started both of these “research” problems on Google. Very quickly I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t going to find the information I needed right away. The bending formulas were on the internet, but the format was not the way I remembered it from trade school and there is almost nothing on the internet to tell you how the measure a V-groove on a pulley. Within about 10 minutes I had the bending formulas that I vaguely remembered and the standard method of measurement for the pitch diameter of the V-Groove of a “B” size pulley groove. Both problems were solved within a few minutes of picking up this 42 year old reference book. What happens though is, we all just use the internet for so many things now, that you simply forget how to do things any other way.
