Vertical Control: Move the reclining front seatback forward or rearward by moving the control toward the front or rear of the vehicle. Power Lumbar Control (If Equipped) If your vehicle has this feature, it is located on the outboard side of the seat(s). The seat will move to the set position. You will hear one chime. Pressing the UNLOCK button of a keyless entry transmitter will adjust the seat to the corresponding stored memory position. Release the lever to lock the seatback where you want it. Pull up on the lever and the seat will go to an upright position. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can’t do their job when you’re reclined like this. The shoulder belt can’t do its job because it won’t be against your body. To fold a front seatback forward, move the lever located on the side of the seat rearward and pull the seatback forward. The rear seat release handles are located on the rear of the seatbacks. Push back on the seatbacks as you pull up on the handles. It also tells you some things you should not do with safety belts. And it explains the air bag system. CAUTION: Don’t let anyone ride where he or she can’t wear a safety belt properly. Here’s why: They work. You never know if you’ll be in a crash. If you do have a crash, you don’t know if it will be a bad one. A few crashes are mild, and some crashes can be so serious that even buckled up a person wouldn’t survive. The rider doesn’t stop. 1-12. In a real vehicle, it could be the windshield. 1-13. With safety belts, you slow down as the vehicle does. You get more time to stop. You stop over more distance, and your strongest bones take the forces. That’s why safety belts make such good sense. 1-14 Here Are Questions Many People Ask About Safety Belts. You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an accident even one that isn’t your fault and your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver doesn’t protect you from things beyond your control, such as bad drivers.http://westcoastcutting.ca/userfiles/epox-ep-4pdai-manual.xml Lap-Shoulder Belt The driver has a lap shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear it properly. 1. Close and lock the door. 2. Adjust the seat so you can sit up straight. To see how, see “Seats”. Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of this section. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to. The shoulder belt is too loose. It won’t give nearly as much protection this way. 1-18 CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury. The belt is buckled in the wrong place. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if your belt is buckled in the wrong place like this. In a crash, the belt would go up over your abdomen. The belt forces would be there, not at the pelvic bones. The shoulder belt is worn under the arm. It should be worn over the shoulder at all times. 1-20 CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury. The belt is twisted across the body. CAUTION: You can be seriously injured by a twisted belt. In a crash, you wouldn’t have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making safety belts effective is wearing them properly. If you’re too close to an inflating air bag, as you would be if you were leaning forward, it could seriously injure you. Safety belts help keep you in position before and during a crash. The driver’s air bag is in the middle of the steering wheel. The right front passenger’s air bag is in the instrument panel on the passenger’s side. 1-25. The path of an inflating air bag must be kept clear. Don’t put anything between an occupant and an air bag, and don’t attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other air bag covering. In an impact of sufficient severity, the air bag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. The sensing system triggers a release of gas from the inflator, which inflates the air bag. The inflator, air bag and related hardware are all part of the air bag modules inside the steering wheel and in the instrument panel in front of the right front passenger. After they inflate, you’ll need some new parts for your air bag system. If you don’t get them, the air bag system won’t be there to help protect you in another crash. A new system will include air bag modules and possibly other parts. As long as the push bumper or bicycle rack is attached to your vehicle so that the vehicle’s basic structure isn’t changed, it’s not likely to keep the air bags from working properly in a crash. To make the belt longer, tilt the latch plate and pull it along the belt. 1-30 To make the belt shorter, pull its free end as shown until the belt is snug. Accident statistics show that unbelted people in the rear seat are hurt more often in crashes than those who are wearing safety belts. Rear passengers who aren’t safety belted can be thrown out of the vehicle in a crash. Pull up on the latch plate to make sure it is secure. When the shoulder belt is pulled out all the way, it will lock. If it does, let it go back all the way and start again. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones. And you’d be less likely to slide under the lap belt. If you slid under it, the belt would apply force at your abdomen. This feature will provide added safety belt comfort for older children who have outgrown booster seats and for small adults. When installed on a shoulder belt, the comfort guide better positions the belt away from the neck and head. The elastic cord must be under the belt. Then, place the guide over the belt, and insert the two edges of the belt into the slots of the guide. The elastic cord must be under the belt and the guide on top. 1-36 4. Buckle, position and release the safety belt as described in “Rear Seat Outside Passenger Positions” earlier in this section. Don’t let it get twisted. 2. If the belt isn’t long enough, see “Safety Belt Extender” at the end of this section. Make sure the release button on the buckle is positioned so you would be able to unbuckle the safety belt quickly if you ever had to. A baby doesn’t weigh much until a crash. During a crash a baby will become so heavy it is not possible to hold it.Air bags plus lap offer outstanding protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its air bag system is designed for them. This is necessary because a newborn infant’s neck is weak and its head weighs so much compared with the rest of its body. In a crash, an infant in a rear facing seat settles into the restraint, so the crash forces can be distributed across the. Make sure that the infant’s head rests toward the center of the vehicle. A child restraint system is any device designed for use in a motor vehicle to restrain, seat, or position children. A built in child restraint system is a permanent part of the motor vehicle. An add child restraint system is a portable one, which is purchased by the vehicle’s owner. General Motors, therefore, recommends that child restraints be secured in a rear seat outside position including an infant riding in a rear facing infant seat, a child riding in a forward facing child seat and an older. For it to work, a top strap must be properly anchored to the vehicle. If the child restraint does not have a top strap, one can be obtained, in kit form, for many child restraints. To remove the plugs, grasp the edges of the plugs and pull them out. See “Rear Convenience System” in the Index for more information.See the earlier part about the top strap if the child restraint has one. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. If you’re using a forward facing child restraint, you may find it helpful to use your knee to push down on. The restraints won’t work properly. 1-50 Securing a Child Restraint in the Right Front Seat Position Your vehicle has a right front passenger air bag. Never put a rear facing child restraint in this seat. You’ll be using the lap shoulder belt. See the earlier part about the top strap if the child restraint has one. Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the child restraint. If you have the choice, a child should sit next to a window so the child can wear a lap get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide. What is the proper way to wear safety belts. If possible, an older child should wear a shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a. Here two children are wearing the same belt. The belt can’t properly spread the impact forces. In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured. A belt must be used by only one person at a time. What if a child is wearing a lap but the child is so small that the shoulder belt is very close to the child’s face or neck? Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt. The belt’s force would then be applied right on the child’s abdomen. But if a safety belt isn’t long enough to fasten, your dealer will order you an extender. It’s free. When you go in to order it, take the heaviest coat you will wear, so the extender will be long enough for you. Also explained are the instrument panel and the warning systems that tell you if everything is working properly and what to do if you have a problem. A child can be overcome by the extreme heat and can suffer permanent injuries or even death from heat stroke. Never leave a child alone in a vehicle, especially with the windows closed in warm or hot weather. Power Windows (If Equipped) If you have power windows, the controls are located on the armrests on each of the side doors. The switches operate the windows when the ignition is RUN, ACCESSORY or when Retained Accessory Power (RAP) is active. Press the driver’s window switch down briefly to activate the express down feature. Lightly tap the switch to open the window slightly. The express feature can be interrupted at any time by pressing the up arrow end of the switch. A child or others could be badly injured or even killed. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. Don’t leave the keys in a vehicle with children. It will fit with either side up. When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer provides the owner with a pair of identical keys and a key code number. The key code number tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys. Passengers especially children open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle won’t open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors aren’t locked. Remove the ignition key and press LOCK to lock all the doors at once. To unlock the doors, press the raised area to the right of the key symbol. To use the security locks: 1. Open one of the rear doors. 2. You will find a security lock lever on the inside edge of the rear door. If your vehicle has this feature, you can lock and unlock your doors and rear endgate from about 3 feet (1 m) up to 30 feet (9 m) away using the remote keyless entry. If you press UNLOCK again within three seconds, the remaining doors will unlock, the parking lamps will flash and the interior lamps will go on. Static from your body transferred to these surfaces may damage the transmitter. To replace the battery in the keyless entry transmitter do the following: 1. Insert a dime in the slot between the covers of the transmitter housing near the key ring hole. You can’t see or smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and even death. If you must drive with the rear window, endgate or liftgate open or if electrical wiring or other cable connections must pass through the seal between the body and the rear window, endgate. The endgate glass will not release if button to open the glass. To lock a power lock system from the outside, insert the key into the lock button and turn clockwise. To open the entire liftgate, lift the handle located in the center of the door. Although your vehicle has a number of theft features, we know that nothing we put on it can make it impossible to steal. However, there are ways you can help. Key in the Ignition If you leave your vehicle with the keys inside, it’s an easy target for joy riders or professional thieves. With this system, the SECURITY light will flash as you open the door (if your ignition is off). This light reminds you to activate the theft system. Don’t drive at any one speed slow for the first 500 miles (805 km). Prolonged operation of accessories in the ACCESSORY position could drain your battery and prevent you from starting your vehicle. LOCK (B): This position locks your ignition, steering wheel and transmission. To remove the key on manual transmission vehicles, turn the key to OFF. Then turn the key to LOCK while pressing the key release button down at the same time. Hold the clutch pedal to the floor and start the engine. Your vehicle won’t start if the clutch pedal is not all the way down that’s a safety feature. 1. You’ll get easier starting and better fuel economy during engine warm the coolant heater should be plugged in a minimum of four hours prior to starting your vehicle. There are several different positions for your shift lever. If your vehicle is equipped with a column shift lever, it features an electronic shift position indicator within the instrument panel cluster. Your vehicle has an automatic transmission shift lock control system. You have to fully apply your regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition key is in RUN. If you cannot shift out of PARK (P), ease pressure on the shift lever push the shift lever all the way into PARK (P) This switch will be located on the floor console or on the side of the shift lever on some models. Then, slowly let up on the clutch pedal as you press the accelerator pedal. THIRD, FOURTH AND FIFTH (3, 4 and 5): Shift into THIRD (3), FOURTH (4) and FIFTH (5) the same way you do for SECOND (2). For the best fuel economy, accelerate slowly and shift when the light comes on. While you accelerate, it is normal for the light to go on and off if you quickly change the position of the accelerator. Use these switches to shift into and out of four drive. You must wait for the 4LO indicator light to stop flashing and remain illuminated before shifting your transmission into gear or releasing the clutch pedal. Use these switches to shift into and out of four drive. This can be done at any speed.Push down the parking brake pedal with your left foot. If the ignition is on, the brake system warning light will come on. To release the parking brake, hold the regular brake pedal down. Your vehicle can roll. If you have left the engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly. If you can leave your vehicle with the key, your vehicle is in PARK (P). 2-40 Console Shift Lever 1. If you can leave your vehicle with the key, your vehicle is in PARK (P).Your vehicle could move suddenly if the shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with the parking brake firmly set. If you have four wheel drive, your vehicle will be free to roll. You have to fully apply the regular brakes before you can shift from PARK (P) when the ignition is in RUN. See “Automatic Transmission Operation”. Don’t park over papers, leaves, dry grass or other things that can burn. 2-44 Engine Exhaust CAUTION: Engine exhaust can kill. It contains the gas carbon monoxide (CO), which you can’t see or smell. But if you ever have to, here are some things to know. CAUTION: Idling the engine with the climate control system off could allow dangerous exhaust into your vehicle. It works like a standard axle most of the time, but when one of the rear wheels has no traction and the other does, this feature will allow the wheel with traction to move the vehicle. If a bulb is burned out, replace it to help avoid an accident. For a single wiping cycle, turn the band to MIST. Hold it there until the wipers start, then let go. The wipers will stop after one wipe. If you want more wipes, hold the band on MIST longer. To turn the rear wiper on, slide the switch to either LO or HI. For delayed wiping, slide the switch to LO. For steady wiping, slide the switch to HI. So, don’t use your cruise control on winding roads or in heavy traffic. Cruise control can be dangerous on slippery roads. On such roads, fast changes in tire traction can cause needless wheel spinning, and you could lose control. Press the button at the end of the lever, then release the button and the accelerator pedal. You’ll now cruise at the higher speed. Turn the knob clockwise to the parking lamps symbol to manually turn on the following: Parking Lamps Sidemarker Lamps Taillamps License Plate Lamps Instrument Panel Lights Turn the knob clockwise to the master lamps symbol to turn on all the lamps listed as well as the headlamps. Then start your vehicle. The automatic headlamp system will stay off until you release the parking brake. As with any vehicle, you should turn on the regular headlamp system when you need it. To idle an automatic transmission vehicle with the DRL off, put the transmission in PARK (P). To idle a manual transmission vehicle with the DRL off, set the parking brake. Turn the thumbwheel all the way up to turn on the interior lamps. Illuminated Entry Your vehicle is equipped with an illuminated entry feature. When a door is opened, the dome lamps will come on if the DOME OVERRIDE button is in the “out”. They will automatically come on for approximately 40 seconds when the doors are unlocked with the keyless entry transmitter (if equipped) or until the ignition key is turned to RUN or ACCESSORY. The mirror will return to its clear daytime state when the glare is reduced. The mirror will also return to its clear daytime state when the vehicle is put into REVERSE (R). You can fold them before entering a car wash. Pull the mirrors in toward the vehicle. Push the mirrors back out when finished. Power Remote Control Mirrors (If Equipped) These controls are located on the driver’s door armrest. See “Rear Window Defogger” in the Index for more information. Power Folding Mirrors (If Equipped) Your vehicle may be equipped with power folding. Some models have a driver information system in the console. In addition, they can help you locate gas stations, rest areas, ATMs, hospitals, hotels, stores, eateries and more.To open or close your sunroof, the ignition needs to be in RUN or ACCESSORY or Retained Accessory Power (RAP) needs to be active. See “Retained Accessory Power” in the Index. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. This device complies with RSS 210 of Industry Canada. Continue to press both buttons through Step 4. 4. Hold down both buttons until you see the red light on the HomeLink Transmitter flash rapidly. The rapid flashing indicates that the HomeLink Transmitter has been programmed. If you have completed this programming already, you now need to train the garage door opener motor head unit to recognize the HomeLink Transmitter. You’ll know how fast you’re going, about how much fuel you’ve used, and many other things you’ll need to know to drive safely and economically. Standard Automatic Transmission Cluster, Canada similar 2-86. Your odometer shows how far your vehicle has been driven, in either miles (used in the United States) or kilometers (used in Canada). The pictures will help you locate them. Warning lights and gages can signal that something is wrong before it becomes serious enough to cause an expensive repair or replacement. The system checks the air bag’s electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem. The system check includes the air bag sensors, the air bag modules, the wiring and the crash sensing and diagnostic module. It should go out once the engine is running. If it stays on, or comes on while you are driving, you may have a problem with the charging system. If you must drive, turn off all unnecessary accessories. Readings in either warning zone indicate a possible problem in the electrical system. Have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible. If it doesn’t come on then, have it fixed so it will be ready to warn you if there’s a problem. If the light comes on while you are driving, pull off the road and stop carefully. If the gage pointer moves into the red area, your engine is too hot. It means that your engine coolant has overheated. If you have been operating your vehicle under normal driving conditions, you should pull off the road, stop your vehicle and turn off the engine as soon as possible. This could lead to costly repairs that may not be covered by your warranty. Find a safe place to park your vehicle. Turn the key off, wait at least 10 seconds and restart the engine. If the light remains on steady, see “If the Light Is On Steady”. Failure to pass this inspection could prevent you from getting a vehicle registration. Here are some things you need to know in order to help your vehicle pass an inspection: Your vehicle will not pass this inspection if the SERVICE ENGINE SOON or CHECK ENGINE. Oil pressure may vary with engine speed, outside temperature and oil viscosity, but readings above the low pressure zone indicate the normal operating range. A reading in the low pressure zone may be caused by a dangerously low oil level or other problems causing low oil pressure. Check Gages Light The CHECK GAGES light will come on briefly when you are starting the engine. If the light comes on and stays on while you are driving, check your coolant temperature and engine oil pressure gages to see if they are in the warning zones. None of these show a problem with your fuel gage: At the gas station, the gas pump shuts off before the gage reads full. It takes a little more or less fuel to fill up than the gage indicated. Be sure to read about the particular systems supplied with your vehicle. Comfort Controls Standard Climate Control System Electronic Climate Control System (If Equipped) Standard Climate Control System Fan Knob The knob on the left side of the heating system control panel controls the fan speed. To increase airflow, move the knob clockwise. This knob will allow you to adjust the interior air temperature independently of the function knob setting. Move the knob clockwise toward 82 for warmer air. Move the knob counterclockwise toward 66 for cooler air. In cold weather, when the system senses the need for heat, the airflow will be directed out of the floor outlets. As the interior temperature approaches a desired setting, the fan speed will decrease. BLEND: This setting divides airflow equally between the heater floor outlet and the windshield defroster outlets. The air conditioning compressor may run to dehumidify the air to prevent window fogging. This reduces the time it takes for your vehicle to cool down. Then keep your windows closed for the air conditioner to work its best. For best results, clear the window of as much snow or ice as possible before using the rear window defogger. To turn on the rear window defogger, find the button marked REAR with the defog symbol on the lower right corner of your climate control system. Airflow is through the instrument panel outlets. Your vehicle’s ventilation system supplies outside air to the inside of your vehicle when it is moving. When the vehicle is not moving, you can get outside air to flow through by selecting any mode and any fan speed. You will get the most enjoyment out of it if you acquaint yourself with it first.
