I actually did very well in Organic Chemistry but the ACS Exam is very different from the exams my professor gave us. I would not have been prepared at all without this book. I studied it hard for a few days and did well on the ACS exam. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because there were a couple concepts that were tested on the ACS exam that weren't covered in this book. Some of the concepts that appeared 4 or 5 times on the exam weren't mentioned in this book. It seemed like the book was a little bit outdated compared to the exam. But I would say that this book is ESSENTIAL to do well on the ACS Organic Chemistry exam and I would absolutely buy it again if I had to take another ACS exam.Did the whole book twice and scored in 94th percentile overall. This outlined significant concepts and provides the questions problems that is formatted to the ACS test. Buy the newer version, don't but the used ones with marks on the answers. If you get it, you will be very happy that you did and your classmates will be upset that they didn't, because let's be real, none of your organic chem tests were like this one. It's weird.Book was written in, all of the multiple choice questions were answered, rendering it useless. It has great example questions and explains why the correct answers are correct and why the wrong answers are incorrect. Don’t underestimate this test but when you get to the test and you feel like you are failing don’t panic you that’s normal. It’s supposed to be super hard. I thought for sure I had failed it but I ended up getting a 60ish which was not only a passing score but also put me at the top 90 of my class (our teacher set it on a curve)This helped me with the ACS exam so much! Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has more than 155,000 members at all degree levels and in all fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related fields. Its headquarters are located in Washington, D.C., and it has a large concentration of staff in Columbus, Ohio. The ACS holds national meetings twice a year covering the complete field of chemistry and also holds smaller conferences concentrating on specific chemical fields or geographic regions. The primary source of income of the ACS is the Chemical Abstracts Service, a provider of chemical databases worldwide.Although there was an American scientific society at that time (the American Association for the Advancement of Science, founded in 1848), the growth of chemistry in the U.S. prompted those assembled to consider founding a new society that would focus more directly on theoretical and applied chemistry. It was the first journal published by ACS and is still the society's flagship peer-reviewed publication. In 1907, Chemical Abstracts was established as a separate journal (it previously appeared within JACS), which later became the Chemical Abstracts Service, a division of ACS that provides chemical information to researchers and others worldwide.Divisional activities include organizing technical sessions at ACS meetings, publishing books and resources, administering awards and lectureships, and conducting other events. The symposia also honor national award winners, including the Arthur C. Cope Award, Cope Scholar Award, James Flack Norris Award in Physical Organic Chemistry, Herbert C. Brown Award for Creative Research in Synthetic Methods. They elect their own officers and select representatives to the national ACS organization. Each of these tests consists of 70 multiple-choice questions, and gives students 110 minutes to complete the exam. The ACS was named the beneficiary of the trust. The first grants from the PRF were awarded in 1954. In 2000, the trust was transferred to the ACS.The site houses information on hundreds of scholarships and grants related to all levels of experience to promote scientific mobility of researchers and practitioners in STEM fields. Any university may start its own ACS Student Chapter and receive benefits of undergraduate participation in regional conferences and discounts on ACS publications. The William H. Nichols Medal Award was the first ACS award to honor outstanding researchers in the field of chemistry. They are presented to leaders of industry, investments, and other sectors, for their contributions to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives. This includes the E. Ann Nalley Regional Award for Volunteer Service to the American Chemical Society, Regional Awards for Excellence in High School Teaching, and the Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences. It is a nonprofit academic publisher of scientific journals covering various fields of chemistry and related sciences. However it has recently launched new open access journals and provided authors with open access publishing options.Retrieved January 28, 2016. Each section contains 8 chapters of material that also aligns to most general chemistry textbooks for a seamless addition to study materials for students. Each chapter is designed with an introductory section of the material including common representations and where to find this material in a textbook. The second section provides worked examples of typical, multiple choice questions including how the correct answer is determined as well as how the incorrect answers were determined. Also included for each study problem is a listing of the corresponding practice questions that use that concept. The final section is a series of practice problems to test the concepts collectively. The key is provided on a separate page for all study and practice problems. Success isn't defined by getting papers into print, but by getting them into the reader's consciousness. Writing Science is built upon the idea that successful science writing tells a story. It uses that insight to discuss how to write more effectively. Integrating lessons from other genres of writing with those from the author's years of experience as author, reviewer, and editor, the book shows scientists and students how to present their research in a way that is clear and that willmaximize reader comprehension. The book takes an integrated approach, using the principles of story structure to discuss every aspect of successful science writing, from the overall structure of a paper or proposal to individual sections, paragraphs, sentences, and words. It begins by building core arguments, analyzing why somestories are engaging and memorable while others are quickly forgotten, and proceeds to the elements of story structure, showing how the structures scientists and researchers use in papers and proposals fit into classical models. The book targets the internal structure of a paper, explaining how towrite clear and professional sections, paragraphs, and sentences in a way that is clear and compelling. The ideas within a paper should flow seamlessly, drawing readers along. The final section of the book deals with special challenges, such as how to discuss research limitations and how to writefor the public.Writing Science is a much-needed guide to succeeding in modern science. Its insights and strategies will equip science students, scientists, and professionals across a wide range of scientific and technical fields with the tools needed to communicate effectively. Topics covered include advice on writing each section of a thesis as well as general discussions on collecting and organizing references, keeping records, presenting data, interacting with a supervisor and avoiding academic misconduct. Recommendations about how to use word processors and other software packages effectively are included, as well as advice on the use of other resources. A concise summary of important points of English grammar is given, along with appendices listing frequently confused words and wordy phrases to avoid. Further appendices are provided, including one on SI units. The aim is to provide an easy-to-read guide that gives students practical advice about all aspects of writing a science thesis or dissertation, starting from writing a thesis plan and finishing with the viva and corrections to the thesis. And what a challenge. Writing a successful grant demands much more than a first-class inquisitive scientific mind. As you will soon discover, raw talent may keep you from drowning in the new world of grants, but staying afloat and learning how to swim are two very different things. This book presents the best strategies you should adopt prior to taking the grant plunge. It will help you draft a reasonable budget plan, assemble a winning grant team, write a stellar pre-proposal, and reassure the funding agencies that the financial risk they take by investing in you will produce great returns. The book also helps you write a grant title, abstract, and a specific aims section that highlight the significance, impact, and innovativeness of your project. It presents specific tools to catch problems early and avoid rejection. It even covers a source of funding you likely have never considered: the public. Crowdfunding not only helps you collect preliminary data within weeks, but also lets you share your passion with people who want to see you succeed.New investigators are usually lost when attempting to write their first grant application. They need a compass to run through the grant maze. This book is that compass. It supplements the work of your mentor, and reviews the practices of your grantor and grant reviewers. Examples are taken from two of the largest grantors in the world, NIH and NSF, and their practices are applicable to other science funding agencies worldwide.Better to be young and funded than old and unfunded. Routine and incremental work is generally not suitable for publication in the journal. In all cases authors should include in their article clear rationale for why their research has been carried out. Total or multistep syntheses should report new or improved strategies or methods, or a more efficient route to the target compound. Methodology studies should show a significant improvement on known methods. Research that extends known methodology to a different class of compounds is generally not suitable, unless that class is significantly different in scope to previously reported methodology. Where methods are directed towards a narrow range of structures, the importance of these targets must be clearly justified. That relevance should be clearly justified in the paper. Relevance is perhaps most clearly demonstrated by the description of testable predictions derived from the results of the reported theoretical work; the tests of these predictions could be contained in the same paper in which the predictions are described. Computational research that merely reproduces experimental data is not suitable for OBC. You may wish to consider our materials journals for articles outside this scope. In particular, sensors for species in artificial surroundings (for example, hydrophilic ions in organic solvents) will not typically be acceptable for publication. Studies that show routine syntheses accompanied by biological testing are generally not suitable for OBC. Our sister journal, RSC Medicinal Chemistry, is more suitable for articles that report significant research in core medicinal chemistry disciplines. Routine isolation studies are not suitable for OBC. No strict page limit but generally up to five journal pages in length. Research findings should be presented in a succinct and informative way, emphasising the importance and potential impact of the research. Authors are particularly encouraged to prepare a title and abstract which concisely summarise the key findings of their research and their importance, avoiding the use of non-standard abbreviations, acronyms and symbols, as this will enable potential readers to quickly understand the significance of the research. Authors should also consider using recognisable, searchable terms, as around 70 of our readers come directly via search engines. The table of contents graphic should give the reader a clear indication of the topic of the study, eg by showing key compounds. Full papers may be an expansion of work previously published in a Communication; however, the new work reported must represent a significant extension on what was previously published. Authors are particularly encouraged to prepare a title and abstract which concisely summarise the key findings of their research and their importance, avoiding the use of non-standard abbreviations, acronyms and symbols, as this will enable potential readers to quickly understand the significance of the research. Any Reply should further the discussion presented in the original article and the Comment. Comments and Replies that contain any form of personal attack are not suitable for publication. The Comment and Reply will both be subject to rigorous peer review in consultation with the journal’s Editorial Board where appropriate. The Comment and Reply will be published together. For general guidance on preparing an article please visit our Prepare your article and Resources for authors pages, the content of which is relevant to all of our journals. These requirements are described below. However, authors are welcome to provide details of improved experimental protocols, more detailed characterisation data, or selected data from known compounds. Spectra should be of high resolution and displayed in landscape, ideally with one spectrum per page. This evidence is required to establish that the properties and constants reported are those of the compound with the new structure claimed. Referees will assess, as a whole, the evidence presented in support of the claims made by the authors. Spectra should be of high resolution and displayed in landscape, ideally with one spectrum per page. Elemental analysis data may be provided if HRMS is not available. In cases where this is not available, a statement as to why this cannot be supplied should be included in the manuscript. For closely related structures assignment by analogy is acceptable if the configuration of one compound in the series is unambiguously assigned In these circumstances the evidence for identity and purity will be judged on a case-by-case basis by the editor and referees. In all cases LC-MS or equivalent data (for example, HPLC data plus MS data on collected peaks) should be supplied for key synthetic intermediates, and as evidence of purity and identity of the final compound. In some cases authors may be required to provide some of this additional data if it is thought necessary by the referees. It is not however necessary to provide this level of characterisation for the oligomer into which the novel monomer is incorporated. Therefore it’s important that these clearly and concisely show the main findings of your research and why they are important. Around 70 of our readers come directly via search engines It will help readers to decide whether your article is of interest to them. This should include an eye-catching graphic and 1-2 sentence(s) of text to summarise the key findings of the article to the reader. Please note, complex schematics or spectra should be avoided. Preferably, the graphic should not be reused and appear again within the article. Text should be limited to the labelling of compounds, reaction arrows and diagrams, with long phrases or sentences being avoided. Any text should be clearly legible to a reader. Ring-opening of cyclic sulfamidates with metal diarylphosphinites yields ?-aminophosphine oxides, which are then reduced to the corresponding phosphines. Effects of the diarylphosphinite countercation on the regioselectivity of the ring-opening reaction (P- versus O-alkylation) are discussed. This method enables the introduction of electron-deficient, electron-rich and sterically hindered diarylphosphino groups, as demonstrated by the synthesis of a series of novel, P-aryl-substituted ?-aminophosphines derived from tert-leucinol, valinol and phenylglycinol. Access to these derivatives will create new opportunities for steric and electronic tuning of ?-aminophosphine-derived chiral ligands and organocatalysts. The reaction was especially useful for syntheses of functionalised anilines when combined with our previously reported nucleophilic addition to N-methoxyamides. To better understand these biological processes, investigation of the in vivo kinetics of AGEs, i.e., analysis of trafficking and clearance properties, was carried out by molecular imaging. In vivo imaging and fluorescence microscopy analysis revealed that non-enzymatic AGEs were smoothly captured by scavenger cells in the liver, i.e., Kupffer and other sinusoidal cells, but were unable to be properly cleared from the body. Overall, these results highlight an important link between AGEs and various disorders These graphics should ideally be created in ChemDraw and they should be supplied at the size you wish them to appear in print, using the same drawing settings for all structures. Full guidance on presentation of structures and other graphics is available on our Author guidelines page. Authors are also asked to supply a very brief statement about the novelty and importance of the research. These pieces of information will assist editors and referees in the peer review process.
