Backcover Copy Civil and Environmental Systems Engineering is designed for a junior- or senior-year course on systems analysis and economics as applied to civil engineering. Because of the presence of several more advanced sections and sections focusing on applications in the book, it may also he useful as a text for first-year graduate courses that introduce students to civil systems. The second edition improves on an already classic book in its field by introducing new material and reorganizing portions of the previous edition. The new material is designed to enhance the student's learning experience by introducing modeling ideas and concepts at the outset, prior to teaching the mathematical process of model building. Network flow problems are given special treatment by highlighting their study separately from the general integer programming models that are considered. As well, the range of examples offered for the student's consideration is expanded not only as a motivational tool, but to illustrate the breadth of applications possible. A number of new end-of-chapter questions have been added to enhance the already well-received engineering economics chapters. REORGANIZED CHAPTERS Chapter 1: Now combines the historical development of systems analysis and the steps a model builder follows in structuring an optimization model. Includes verbal descriptions of settings where models can be employed. The student is challenged to identify, in the context of these settings, not only constraints and appropriate decision variables, but also the needed parameters and problem objectives. Chapter 2: Now consists of the general form of the linear programming problem and nine examples or stylized problems that are described in detail, as well as solved, to help introduce the student to the concept of optimization modeling. Chapter 6; All the major network flows concepts have been drawn together into one chapter. Chapter 7: The topics of integer programming, branch and bound, and the applications of integer programming are now contained in their chapter. If you're interested in creating a cost-saving package for your students contact yourYou know how to convey knowledge in a way that is relevant and relatable to your class. Luckily, most topics in this book aren't really all that complicated. But I remember some instances of staring at a table for 10 minutes trying to find out the pattern that was there while re-reading through the unnecessarily wordy text. Not a fun book at all. I can't remember the name of the book at the moment, but I know that most of what I learned from systems engineering from another text with more detailed examples and an Excel-based approach for teaching solutions (even though that is not the ONLY answer). There were sticky notes still randomly sticking. There were sticky notes still randomly sticking out on certain pages and there were little chunks taken out all over the cover. 2 stars because it still gets the job done though. It teaches something more like statistics and economics, but it does a good job. Nothing spectacular. She received it, used it, and returned it. No issues whatsoever.I feel as though no serious time or thought went into writing this book and I am extremely disappointed that this book was chosen to be used (possibly because one of the authors is a current and longtime faculty member???). Avoid if you can.It however had numerous mistakes and our professor wasn't pleased with how things were laid out. They had cuts holes in the book where the indian markings were. But still much cheaper than all of the other alternatives. Request full-text PDF To read the full-text of this research, you can request a copy directly from the authors. Citations (44) Abstract From the Publisher:Civil engineering systems analysis describes the art and science of public-sector engineering management through a comprehensive presentation of proven model building methods. Modern engineering optimization and engineering economics are among the most valuable tools of effective civil and environmental engineering managers, and this book covers both within a framework that is both comprehensive and rigorous. Civil and Environmental Systems Engineering is a text designed not only to provide proficiency with these tools, but also to furnish an introduction to numerous application areas where these methodologies have found successful use. Indeed, an ever increasing array of complex civil and environmental engineering problems continue to be addressed using these powerful techniques: cost sharing in the planning of regional environmental facilities; design and operation of reservoir systems; highway and transportation network design, planning and management; facilities siting and resource allocation; river and watershed management; structural and geometric design; personnel and resource scheduling; project operations management; hazardous materials handling and routing; bidding and financial strategy development; civil infrastructure evaluation and planning; and many others. Decision tree module within decision support simulation system Conference Paper Full-text available Jan 2005 Mohamed Moussa Janaka Ruwanpura George Jergeas Decision trees are one of the most easy to use tools in decision analysis. Problems where decision tree branches are based on random variables have not received much attention. This paper introduces a successful application of a special purpose simulation (SPS) program in developing a decision tree module that is part of a unified decision support system (DSS) template. The DT module integrates with other modules and allows users to model decision trees with variables that are based on probabilistic random numbers. This paper introduces the DSS-DT module and shows its advantages. View Show abstract. Mathematical programming methods have long been used in water resource planning research and practice (Loucks and van Beek, 2006;Mays, 2005; ReVelle, 2004). These include linear and non-linear programming and dynamic programming, amongst many.. Planning for robust water supply system investments under global change Conference Paper Mar 2018 Ivana Huskova Climate change, population growth, institutional changes and the uncertainties inherent in these pose a major challenge to planning and management of water supply systems. Using historical river flow records to predict the behaviour of water resource systems into the future is no longer sufficient since the hydrologic record can no longer be assumed to represent future conditions. Planning under uncertainty approaches must allow considering future uncertainties in the water supply as well as demand and the institutions that manage water and its uses. Furthermore, water systems are complex and must meet multiple demands of a range of stakeholders whose objectives often conflict. Understanding these conflicts requires exploring many alternative plans to identify balanced solutions in light of important system trade-offs. The thesis focuses on improving the water resource planning process in the UK and to reflect trends in current water planning policy developments in the UK and worldwide. The challenge of longterm human-natural resource system planning is to identify high value portfolios of human interventions whilst considering the two main challenges: future deep uncertainty and multiple concurrent societal goals. This identification process is severely complicated by the exponentially large number of alternative combinations of schemes available to manage future resources. Visual analytics is used to interact with results and demonstrate the benefits of this approach compared to traditional planning practices. Results presented here aim to aid water resources planners to orient investment strategies to meet key requirements and aspirations. These include but are not limited to maintaining the supply-demand balance and customer satisfaction in future, promoting sustainable use of resources, protecting the natural environmental, etc. The thesis aims to communicate to planners the increase in understanding of how such aspirations can be balanced taking into account uncertainties of future conditions using the proposed approaches. Safety was based on potential for improvement (PFI). Road condition was based on surface distresses and bridge condition was based on apparent age per subcomponent. The analysis uses a non-monetised optimisation that expanded upon classical Pareto optimality by observing performance across time. It was found that achievement of good results was conditioned by the availability of early age treatments and impacted by a frontier effect preventing the optimisation algorithm from realising of the long-term benefits of deploying actions when approaching the end of the analysis period. A disaggregated bridge condition index proved capable of improving levels of service in bridge subcomponents. To solve the above problems and improve solution quality, researchers have invested a substantial amount of effort into alignment optimization. OPTIMIZATION OF RAILWAY ALIGNMENTS IN COMPLEX MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS Conference Paper Dec 2018 Taoran Song Xianbao Peng Hao Pu Wei Li Optimizing railway alignments in mountainous regions is known as a very complex and time-consuming engineering work. In this paper, we propose a three dimensional distance transform algorithm to solve this problem and improve the quantity and quality of alignment solutions. In this method, we develop an erythrocyte-shaped neighboring mask to narrow local search space and improve search efficiency. Moreover, to avoid a long search time in such an enormous 3D search space, a stepwise-radiant scanning strategy is designed to accelerate the search process. Lastly, this novel approach is applied to a real-world case in a mountainous region with complex topographic. The results demonstrate that it can offer more promising solutions satisfying multiple constraints compared with the alternatives designed by experienced designers and generated by two dimensional distance transform algorithm in this realm. Finally, important highway cost items (e.g., right-of-way cost) are also neglected in this method. Applicability of highway alignment optimization models Article Full-text available Apr 2012 TRANSPORT RES C-EMER Min-Wook Kang Manoj K. Jha Paul Schonfeld This paper presents an intelligent optimization tool that assists planners and designers in finding preferable highway alignments, connecting specified endpoints or zones. It integrates genetic algorithms with a geographic information system (GIS) for optimizing highway alignments and processes massive amounts of relevant data associated with highway design and alternative evaluation. To show the applicability of the proposed model to a real-world problem, two actual highway projects in the state of Maryland have been analyzed using the model. An extensive analysis of sensitivity to key model parameters is also conducted to describe the model capabilities. The analysis results show that the model can effectively optimize highway alignments in an area combining complex terrain and various types of natural and cultural land-use patterns, and provide detailed information of optimized alignments as a model output. It is also found that the alignments optimized by the model are quite similar to those obtained through conventional manual methods by a state agency, but the model can greatly reduce the time required for highway planning and design as well as produce lower cost solutions. Finally, the results confirm that all dominating and alignment-sensitive costs should be simultaneously evaluated in the alignment optimization process because many trade-off opportunities exist among those costs. The proposed model can greatly contribute to the productivity of highway planners as well as to the quality of the resulting infrastructure. The formulation given in detail below uses MIP. The MIP is used to provide uniqueness to certain outcomes Revelle et al. 1997. Examples in this formulation where discrete variables are used include a fixed land area, which can only be planted with one crop and the definition of a household as either food insecure or not.. Agricultural Risk Decision Support System for Resource-Poor Farmers in Burkina Faso, West Africa Article Sep 2009 J WATER RES PL-ASCE Mel Rader Carla Roncoli Frederic Ouattara Paul Kirshen A stochastic mixed integer programming decision support system (DSS) to aid farmers in the Sahel-Sudan region of West Africa is formulated. It provides optimal crop planting practices that minimize the caloric deficit of a household and maximize limited household income given a seasonal probabilistic rainfall forecast and the farmer's risk level. The recommendations of the DSS are subjected to sensitivity analyses related to labor availability, prices, and risk level. Furthermore, survey data gathered from a case study of Bonam Village are presented for comparison with the output of the DSS. It is found that the DSS captures many of the complexities of agricultural management practices such as the strategy of diversification. An optimization model like this may have future applications in West Africa to improve agricultural decision making and also test hypotheses related to climate forecasts and improvements in household food security. The uniform benefit may be much higher in some other projects such as bridges, where earlier project availability reduces economic loss resulting from traffic disruptions.
