Vicki H 5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, what if God did design marriage to make us holy rather than happy. Often the counseling is about communication ideas and such. This is a must-read for all.I've looked online and I don't know if he ever addresses Romans 7:3. Does it mean what it says or not.I read this book with my fiance (now husband) during our premarital counseling class. I don’t like to read much but it is an easy and interesting read.I am usually pretty skeptical but had heard good things about the book. Was surprised that I actually felt I learned A LOT about our marriage in general with regards to being a Christian. I am a truly stubborn person and I feel this book opened my eyes and heart to my wife - vice versa. Recommend for any married, especially newly weds.Wish I would have returnedI highly recommend this book for counselors and for those invested in rebuilding a broken marriage or making a current marriage better. Please don't buy this book since it needs some CD(if I am not wrong). I think its used for sessions wherein people make you do tasks as mentioned and also the leader has an idea as to what to do after that. This book for sure needs an accompaniment. I'm just not sure what. Dh 5.0 out of 5 stars Almost every other writer makes similar points but Gary was one of the first in our time to talk about it. I like Kellers book and Driscoll is ok. In the end, this is our go to for couples and pre-marriage. Sacred search is another great book for pre-marriage. But this is a DVD.So having a DVD series on the topic was a great idea. Now I will say Gary is not the most engaging teacher. He can be a little dry. He has some humor in it but his teaching style can be a challenge for some. If your a leader you understand that even with rest material, presentation can make or break a groups ability to engage. So just be aware your not getting a lively presenter. Just a guy, sitting in a chair in front of a window in what looks like his home. Its well filmed and produced and the content is good. Now all that being said don't get the idea its a huge bore. Just saying if your used to a guy like Jimmy Evans or even a Mark Gungor you might be disappointedThe practical examples Gary gives of him and his wife are both transparent and at times funny. If you are simply looking for a biblical perspective on marriage but are not planning on going through this study with another couple or small group, than just buy the book and don’t bother with the video and study guide. What a concept and it helped us so much to deepen our relationship with the Lord and with my husband. We have done many marriage studies but we think this is the best one we have ever done so far!We showed part of it to our Marriage Encounter group and they all felt it was a great way to view our marriagesMy son just got married so I really wanted him to use both book and dvd. I recommend this book. The DVD sessions are excellent. The participant's guide is less useful. I was also using the complete book to provide more information for discussion. The book doesn't coordinate with the DVD. That was a mess. I patched together some kind of coordination. Not sure why the publisher didn't make them coordinate. I highly recommend the complete book. There was some quibbles with some of the parallels drawn in the book, but the vast majority of it was great. If you are looking for a God-centered approach to marriage that will cause you to rethink not only how you interact with your spouse but all people, this is a very good series.Too many of us have forgotten why God designed marriage. We have allowed the culture to influence us and it is time we check ourselves and see what He has for us.I highly recommend it for every marriage good or bad. It's easy to be happy when you're dating someone, but a lot harder when you're married and living the daily grind with someone. Remembering that marriage is meant to make me holy, more like Jesus, rather than just make me happy is so fundamentally different than what the world sets marriage up to be. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, ma It rocked my world then, and 3 years later, I'm still being challenged by Gary Thomas' book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, married or single! Still the second half a felt was a bit repetitive. Very insightful for couples of any age who are wanting more out of marriage. This book can help you to develop a strong christian marriage. This book also help you to find the answer why do you wanna get married. Thanks Gary Thomas, it opens my mind widely:) The spiritual element of marriage can be easily overlooked but Thomas carefully and compellingly unpacks it in a convicting way. Getting married is agreeing to grow together, into each other, to virtually co-mingle our souls so that we share a unique and rare bond. When we stop doing that, we have committed fraud against ourselves. 2. THANK YOU: There are few things that lift my spirits more than simply hearing my wife or children say, “thanks for working so hard to provide for us.” Those nine words can lift 10 Getting married is agreeing to grow together, into each other, to virtually co-mingle our souls so that we share a unique and rare bond. When we stop doing that, we have committed fraud against ourselves. 2. THANK YOU: There are few things that lift my spirits more than simply hearing my wife or children say, “thanks for working so hard to provide for us.” Those nine words can lift 100lbs of pressure off my back. Be appreciating your spouse, by seeking first to understand him or her, by emptying yourself and not immediately assuming that your task, your time, your perceived need is the most important. 3. HELP: Take time to do an inventory of your spouse’s difficulties rather than of your spouse’s shortcomings. 4. Talking and touching are thus two of the most important ways we give ourselves to each other. Many men don’t realize the damage they do simply by remaining silent. 5. RESPECT: When I learn to give respect, I become transformed in the process. Respect is a spiritual discipline. 6. Marriage is a reciprocal willingness of two persons to assume responsibility for each other. The beauty of marriage is that it confronts our selfishness and demands our services 24 hours a day. There are times to serve—and times to receive service. The duties of marriage call us out of ourselves to help us remember that ours is not the only vision in the world. 7. Some of us ask too much about marriage, we want to get the largest portion of our life’s fulfillment from our relationship with our spouse. 8. SEX: To a man, sex is the most meaningful declaration of love and self-worth. A sexually fulfilled and active wife radiates certain energy. A man who is sexually satisfied with his wife exudes a sense of well-being.It's one of my pet peeves. I think that's cheating if you're gonna put your name on a book.;) But I got over it pretty quick, when they lessened as I read on. And now look what I've done.I admit to thinking as I think many do that living a single life as a Christian gives one more opportunities to live for Christ, but Mr. Thomas showed It's one of my pet peeves. And now look what I've done.I admit to thinking as I think many do that living a single life as a Christian gives one more opportunities to live for Christ, but Mr. Thomas showed me this is not so. In fact, marriage gives many opportunities for one to become like Christ, holy, inasmuch as it is a sacrificial relationship. Or should be anyways. To be sure, many people are in desperate straits because of sinful choices and actions. But John examines it from another angle: 'If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?' (1 John 3:17). For John, there is no mention of a SINLESS brother or sister in need. His teaching is far more blunt -- their NEED defines our obligation.I have recommended it to a ton of people and given away a number of copies. So I was looking forward to doing the DVD study with my small group. The study went fine, but the DVD and the participant guide suffer from lack of production values. The DVD had points where Gary Thomas was speaking outside by a lake and motor boats goes by and it is hard to hear him. In several other places he was speaking directly into the sun and that made hi I have recommended it to a ton of people and given away a number of copies. In several other places he was speaking directly into the sun and that made him squint. Other places were just awkward and unintentionally funny. The participant guide is short. It says 77 pages, but I read each of the six sections in about 5 minutes a piece. The content should have been included in the back of the book or as a free download. The kindle edition includes lots of space to write in (but of course you can't write in a kindle edition). And while I know I purchased my last copy of Sacred Marriage on sale, the participant's guide was more than the actual book. On the whole I would suggest skipping the participant's guide (the questions for group discussion mostly alternate between too long questions that have too many parts or Sunday school questions.) Maybe get one for some question ideas, but not everyone needs a copy. Even better, skip the DVD and read the book. My full review is on my blog at The rest was an essay on how well read he is and him sharing what others had to say about it all. 4) The book was very repetitive. Distilling it down to the main points gives you significantly less than an almost 300 page book. Of course this is my opinion. With all that The rest was an essay on how well read he is and him sharing what others had to say about it all. 4) The book was very repetitive. With all that being said I did get a list of books I would love to read from all his quoting. The majority of the lines I underlined are someone else's. Despite personality flaws that annoyed me the author did put his sincere effort in it. And I can't say I didn't walk away blessed by it. It's opened my eyes to marriage in a way that truly hadn't considered in some aspects and confirmed previous God given revelations. So mission accomplished. All in all, despite the fact that it took sheer discipline to make it to the end I have to say that if you only have the time or inclination to read one book on marriage you would be okay with this one. What if God had an end in mind that went beyond our happiness, our comfort, and our desire to be infatuated and happy as if the world were a perfect place?.What if God designed marriage to make us HOLY more than to make us happy?” “If you want to become more like Jesus, I can’t imagine any better thing to do than get married. The Christian theology and inspiring perspective is very strong in this book. I will admit, this book took me a little while to get through. It is not an easy read, so give yourself some time to devote to this book. I would suggest this book if you're wanting to give your marriage more attention, or for newlyweds! Honest, creative, transparent. One of the best books on marriage I have ever read. Thomas keeps pulling the reader into living authentically before God and your spouse. What I like most about this book is how he describes the struggle of holiness in marriage with you spouse as part of God's design for you, in that program of sanctification. Can't say enough about it. I really like it. Honest, creative, transparent. I really like it. But if you truly want to love God, look right now at the ring on your left hand, commit yourself to exploring anew what that ring represents, and love passionately, crazily, enduringly the fleshy person who put it there.Gary really brings a lot to the table of marriage. He continues on through the book hitting topics of how marriage teaches us to love, to respect, to forgive, spiritual disciplines, how to be a servant, and even God-centered sex, along with many other topics. It is stuff I even haven't thought about before. Some of it is skim worthy, but mostly read the bullet points. Some chapters are more engrossing than others, depending on your relationship. I do like the running theme that - Marriage won't fulfill you, but will make you more holy. I really loved reading the history put into his writing. It's very well thought out. I appreciated how transparent Gary is about his shortcomings and challenges in his marriage. This book had a lot about sex in it--from a Biblical view of course. Just saying. Also seemed geared more towards younger marriages. Recommended for those wanting to improve their marital life no matter how good yours is or isn't. I'd like my wife to read it, too. I really appreciated the discussions about how your marriage isn't supposed to be something that simply makes you happy (which it will), but that it also serves and a means of sanctification. I really appreciated the discussions about how your marriage isn't supposed to be something that simply makes you happy (which it will), but that it also serves and a means of sanctification. My wife and I read this together as part of our devotional life together and were both challenged and inspired to see our marriage in light of what God wants to do in and through us. This is especially true for your spouse. Overall, a good read, but not one that I'll recommend everyone to read. This is especially true for your spouse. Overall, a good read, but not one that I'll recommend everyone to read. It was new to me to consider the spiritual aspect of marriage and to think about how practically bring God into my marriage. Glad I read this before the wedding - hoping to put some of it into practice from the start. So when you drop out of your marriage you are really dropping out of holiness.
