Earlier, Dr. Zarrillo was the Associate Dean of CEAS and Chair of the Department of Teacher Education. Previously, he was a member of the faculty at California State University, Long Beach and an elementary school teacher in Burbank, California. In addition to Ready for RICA, Dr. Zarrillo is author of Teaching Elementary Social Studies: Principles and Applications (Fourth Edition, Pearson, 2012); Teaching Reading with Children’s Literature (co-authored with Carole Cox, Macmillan, 1993); and Multicultural Literature, Multicultural Teaching (Harcourt Brace, 1994). DS 5.0 out of 5 stars The first time, I only used the Cliff's Notes study guide since I passed the CSET the first time studying that version of it. Two days before taking the RICA I went to a study session conducted by a professor at my campus. She saw the Cliff's Notes, asked if I had Zarillo's study guide (uh, no), and said I wouldn't pass without it. Harsh, but true. I was 24 points away from passing. Study session round two (another 2 months of studying) I purchased this book. I also watched every video even though I thought they would be super boring. They actually weren't. Instead, they were short, to the point and helped the visual learner side of me A LOT. I didn't give up on the Cliff's Notes study guide because I used it as a supplement to quiz myself repeatedly while studying the Zarillo book. He also is all over YouTube explaining each party of his book. This author also helped me pass. For example, the author is right as it pertains to Domain 1, but that is it.http://amoosetracksmanor.com/userfiles/eheim-2076-manual.xml I'm very dissatisfied and disappointed with using this book as preparation for the RICA for two reasons. In fact, I discovered that many of the so called strategies that he suggested is what caused the CTC to take away twenty four points from my exam. When it comes to writing your own activities or strategies (for the written response and the Case Study) the CTC wants your very own strategies or activity, not something that is copied from some RICA test prep book like this. I am writing this review as a warning to people who are trying to take and pass the RICA. Sadly, I wasted a lot of time relying upon some of the strategies or unclear activities that Zarillo suggested. So if you are like me, please don't rely upon Zarillo and his limited information to pass the RICA. This test prep book may work for some people, but following what he said, I have to reregister and retest for the fourth time. Just remember that for the writing section and Case Study, your ideas are your own, not Zarillo's! Good luck everyone:-DI used BOTH books intensively. First, I read the CliffsNotes book and then the Zarrillo book. I used the Zarrillo book to make a study guide. I then added information from the CliffsNotes book to my study guide. I took all of the tests from both books; multiple choice, short answer, and case study. EVERYTHING. I studied from my study guide and the 3 practice tests. I did not use CDs or any other online resources. I am not enrolled in a credential program. I have 8 years of teaching experience. I passed. I even finished the exam an hour early. I studied intensively for two weeks (1 week was a school break so I really studied ALL DAY for 7 days). I recommend doing this during a long school break so that you can dedicate sufficient time to studying. Good Luck!I didn't enjoy it at first and skimmed through the readings. When I had to take the RICA, I failed the first time. I realized I neeed to review this book again. I used this book to study and take notes. I read the entire book and it literally had every detail needed to pass the RICA. Of all the RICA books out there, this is the one that helped me pass. I recommend to all who will be taking the RICA.Then, I took an online seminar to prepare me for the RICA exam and the instructor highly recommended using this book as a study guide. I am very glad I did, as it seemed as though everything that I had to know for the exam was covered in this book. I also found an instructor on youtube who has extensive videos for RICA prep. Those videos, along with this book helped me pass the exam on my first try. Highly recommend! It also bothered me just a bit that there were a few typos on numerous pages. This book includes online videos too which is awesome for studying. I would say get the RICA Cliffnotes book for extra practice tests and info not in this book, and the Case Studies in Prep for the CA Reading Competency Test by Rossi and Schipper for extra practice for case studies. This book is the BEST for reading instruction strategies. The others give you more practice to actually prepare for the RICA. I like the format of this book because it gives you pages that explain what you should study for 10 days before the exam, multiple reading instruction strategies, and assessment options. I do not think this should be the only book you should use to study. It is clearly written, comprehensive, and a manageable number of pages. Between my graduate class and this review guide: I passed the RICA on my first attempt. The test is hard so don't think you can go in 1-2 weeks studying and you'll pass. You will pass, don't waste your time stressing and spend more Time studying. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Please try your request again later. For credential candidates for the Multiple Subject Credential Program in California. In addition to completing your courses and field experience, you must pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) to earn your credential. The purpose of this book is to help you pass the RICA. There are two formats for the RICA, a written test and video performance assessment. This book will prepare you to take the written examination. There are a few considerations you should keep in mind while you study from this book. It was written for credential candidates who have taken (or who are taking) reading methods courses. This book is not a substitute for coursework or a more comprehensive methodology text on how to teach reading. This book is meant to be read as a review for RICA. You can find out more about the topics covered in this book, including references to journal articles and books, in your reading methods textbook. My purpose is not to analyze elementary reading instruction; my purpose is to help you pass the RICA. From June of 1998 to June of 1999, over 14,000 people took the written form of the RICA. Ninety percent passed the exam. Please don't let this high passing rate fool you. The RICA is a difficult test and the high passage rate no doubt reflects the hard work of the people who took it. In this introductory chapter, I will discuss the test itself and some test-taking strategies that will help you to be successful. An Overview of The Test There are three parts to the RICA: Multiple Choice Questions Focused Educational Problems and Instructional Tasks A Case Study Let's take a closer look at each section. Multiple Choice Questions The RICA includes 70 multiple choice questions. You will not know which ten are experimental, so you must try to get every question correct. Focused Educational Problems and Instructional Tasks You will have four essay questions to answer. Two of the questions will require a short answer. The other two questions will require a longer answer. The RICA Registration Bulletin suggests answers of 150 words. The Case Study The case study is another essay question. You will be presented with test data about a student and challenged to describe instructional strategies that will help the student become a better reader. The RICA Registration Bulletin suggests an answer of 300 words. There are 120 points possible on the test. Your attitude when you take the test should be very business-like. Rather it is from not budgeting the time you spend on, each question. The more questions you answer the better your chances for passing the test. Here is more good news about the RICA. You have four hours to complete the test, and you can spend the time however you want. I recommend the following: Multiple Choice Section: 90 minutes Short Essays: 30 minutes (15 minutes each) Long Essays: 50 minutes (25 minutes each) Case Study: 60 minutes So be sure you have a watch when you take the RICA and budget your time If you follow my time guidelines. So, don't get bogged down or frustrated on the multiple choice section of the RICA. Expect difficult questions. The biggest mistake you can make, when completing the RICA multiple choice section, is to spend too much time on this section of the test. Answer every question; there is no penalty for guessing. Once again, NES is the company that developed and administers the RICA. If these sample questions are like the ones on the RICA, they will be fairly difficult to answer. In fact, one sample question had a stem that was 70 words. Long stems make for complicated questions. The Registration Bulletin says there will be two types of multiple choice questions. Don't take more than 90 minutes on this section. Expect some difficult questions with long stems. (4) Develop an Appropriate Strategy for Answering the Essays There are two short essay questions. Take about 15 minutes for each of these questions. There are two long essay questions. Your answers for the long questions should be between 150 and 250 words. Take about 25 minutes for each of the long questions. All the essay questions present a hypothetical situation. You will get information about an entire class, a group of children, or an individual student. You must decide what an appropriate instructional intervention would be. Be sure to take a look at the sample essay questions on the NES web site ( ). Here are some things to remember when you write your answers: Answer what they ask, and come directly to the point. Write legibly. Don't expect the person reading your essays to read your essay over and over again to try to figure out what you wrote. Your answer should solve the challenge the question presents by: - Identifying appropriate instructional strategies, - Providing specific information about the strategy as it applies to the question, and - Explaining why the strategy will work. Once again: Identify, provide specific information, explain. The sample test at the end of this book has two short essay and two long essay questions, just like the real RICA. The answer section provides examples of good responses to the essays. (5) Plan Ahead to Use an Appropriate Strategy for Addressing the Case Study The case study is worth 24 points, one-fifth of the total (120). The data you are provided may include the results of a reading interest survey, the teacher's copy of a miscue analysis of a student's oral reading, the results of the student reading lists of words, and other types of tests. I will review kinds of tests you need to know in subsequent chapters of this book. The case study on the NES web site asks for an answer of three parts: First, identify the student's strengths as a reader. Be sure to cite specific examples from the case study data to support your conclusions. Second, identify the student's areas of need. Again, be sure to cite specific examples from the case study to support your conclusions. Finally, identify an instructional intervention to address each area of need. Describe the intervention (types of lessons) and provide an example of one lesson. Explain how the intervention will help the student. Once again, when answering the case study, tell about the student's strengths, areas of need, and interventions to address each area of need. My advice on the case study is the same as for the essays. Come directly to the point and write legibly. As you might know, the field of reading instruction has zealous proponents of radically different approaches to teaching reading. The people who designed RICA believe that teachers should have a balanced instructional program with: The direct, explicit teaching of reading skills and strategies. A reading skill is something a reader does automatically. Opportunities to use the skills and strategies through meaningful reading and writing experiences, like reading library books and writing stories. You believe that teachers should directly teach students the skills and strategies they need to be good readers. And, you believe students should spend a great deal of time reading and writing. (7) Devote More Study Time to the Content Areas Which Are Emphasized The Content Specifications for RICA define 13 content areas you must know (this book has a chapter on each content area). The 13 content areas, however, do not have equal weight on the test. Both the multiple choice questions and the essays emphasize the following eight content areas: Content Area 3: Phonemic Awareness Content Area 4: Concepts About Print Content Area 5: Systematic, Explicit Phonics and Other Word Identification Strategies Content Area 6: Spelling Instruction Content Area 7: Reading Comprehension Content Area 8: Literary Response and Analysis Content Area 9: Content-Area Literacy Content Area 10: Student Independent Reading There will be questions on material from each of the 13 content areas. It would be wise, however, to devote more time to the eight areas listed above than to the other five. (8) Read the Content Specifications. Check the NES RICA Web Site. Be sure that you have read the Content Specifications for the RICA. They can be found in the Registration Bulletin. The Content Specifications are a detailed outline of what you must know. Look at the sample questions on the NES web site. The questions on the NES web site are written in the same format as the questions you will answer on the test. The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) is responsible for the RICA. For information on the test, click on their web site at. The Registration Bulletin for the RICA is full of important information. It includes the content specifications for the exam. Rachel 5.0 out of 5 stars I am sad to say that I think I learned more about teaching reading from this thin review text book than I did throughout my whole teacher education program (I won't say which University I am at!)! To get the most use out of this book here is what you should do. Set up a grid like the one I am going to try and explain to you how to make (see below) and then fill it out as you read. This book totally saved me and I passed the RICA and did very well on it (I got 4 pluses on the first two domains, and the case studies, and 3 pluses on the 3rd and 4th domains). As you read the book fill in those two blank spots for each area and you will be all set. TRUST ME. THIS BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT REVIEW FOR THE RICA.The questions are concise and constructed well. The case studies and essay questions are very close to those on the test as well. The Cliff Test Prep is ok, but if you're choosing carefully, this is the one to get. Good luck!So happy I passed the second time taking the test. I think I failed the first time because I studied the wrong book dont make the mistake I made study from this book it is very comprehensive but if you make the study time it will pay off. You may need to supplement though with this other book becuase the case study portion is a little vague. I mostly just studied the Ready for RICA book and practiced writing some case studies from the case study book.Oh and remember to practice the practice questions on the RICA website. So Thank You. God (might have had a lot to do with it:)) reviewers Zarrillo Good luck future teachers, CrystalThere was way more than moderate marking and highlighting. Nearly every page of the book was either highlighted or had notes written on them. Also, parts of the practice exam were scratched through and barely readable. The three guides contradicted each other and I got really frustrated while studying. I ended up studying from this book the most, and after taking the test I am SO glad I did. This books seemed to be the most similar to the actual format of the exam. I wish it had a second practice test, but otherwise, excellent study guide! From examples to a detailed description of the format of the test, it certainly helped me feel very prepared. The only thing to watch out for is that the questions in the book are easier than those on the RICA (for the most part). So, I would suggest using it along with the practice test you can download from the RICA website. Between the two you should be more than sufficiently prepared.
