Walk around the fruits of their labour and see columns, streets and art from a time in history most often seen depicted in Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters. When you get there you can get an audio guide of Empuries, available in the car park where you purchase tickets to the sites. The ticket, which is really good value for money, also gives you access to the archaeological museum. Once inside you will think you have walked on to the set of the latest Indiana Jones movie. It is a place you really have to see with your own eyes; no words would ever do the place justice. Beaches En Route To the Ruins To get there stroll along the promenade that sets out from Sant Marti d’Empuries and L’Escala, two stunning fishing villages with a rich cultural history themselves. En route you will pass some gorgeous golden beaches where there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports, including scuba diving and windsurfing. This historical paradise is surrounded by Mediterranean beaches and enchanting coves that will literally take your breath away. Pack A Picnic Stop off with friends and family along the way and enjoy a dip in the water or relax on the beach with a picnic made up with tasty bites from the local larder. Anchovies, not loved by all, are a speciality of the area and are absolutely fantastic. Make sure to pack some with your picnic goodies. However many visitors are attracted because of Empuriabrava, which contrasts dramatically with the original town and of course the medieval village.http://xn----ctbefsaoezcssn.xn--p1ai/userfiles/ef-530-dg-st-manual.xml Read on to find out about this gorgeous area of the Costa Brava in our Castello d’Empuries-Empuriabrava Travel Guide. In the town of Castello d’Empuries, there are some fine monuments to see, and it also has its own Jewish quarter. If you are someone who enjoys history and re-enactments, 2014 saw the 20th edition of the town’s medieval festival. Within the municipality of Castello d’Empuries, which is located in the Alt Emporda, is the contrasting Empuriabrava. Empuriabrava is only 4 km from the town of Castello de Empuries and is a unique, beautiful area with 23 km of canals which you can navigate. It is Europe’s biggest residential Marina area. The vast majority of the homes have a private mooring at the bottom of their gardens, and in total there’s around 5000 private jetties. Apartments and fine houses have been built intricately along the waterways, and are also “conveniently” close to some of the loveliest golden sandy beaches. About If like me, you prefer to immerse yourself in the more historical part of a destination, then you may prefer to stay around the original town of Castello d’Empuries, but spend some time visiting the impressive wealthy residential Marina area of Empuriabrava. Depending on your taste, either stay in this area, or go there to have a drink or something to eat, and enjoy watching the lifestyle of those who have expensive yachts and houses. It’s a very important tourist destination, which is extremely popular with both the French and Germans, and also to some extent some British and Dutch. 1. As one might expect in this kind of an area, there are a very good range of services of all types, and proper access for those who may need it. Built by the Regiment of Toledo, it was specifically to defend the town from the Carlins forces. It was around the beginning of the 15th century when it was built: This was the time when its facade was constructed, which has a particularly interesting marble porch. There’s also a Parish Museum which has gold and silver, archaeological pieces, and liturgical ornaments, images amongst other items. This museum is known as El Tresor (The Treasure). Although the Counts tried on various occasions to get it the honour of being classed as a Cathedral, they weren’t successful. The convent that you can see today has a particularly outstanding belfry, and on the entrance you can see the year 1749 is engraved. Clare of Assisi nuns outside of the town itself. The counts would have had the Palace built sometime during the second part of the 14th century. In 1401 Count Peter II lent the palace to the friars. The convent itself was reconstructed between the 12th and 18th centuries, and has some elements such as the facade, which is classical Baroque, a Gothic room and other parts of medieval style and construction. Both sit on the Bay of Roses opposite the town of Roses. There is the old town, the new town and the Roman town founded by Julius Caesar in 49 BC. In 218 BC the Romans came and built a city next to this town. Some of the excavated houses reveal mosaics and murals. There are also some large water cisterns. A Forum and two villas have been excavated in the Roman town as well as an amphitheatre. There is a small museum with artefacts uncovered during excavation of the site. So many of us started out on cars with a soon-to-be-grubby workshop manual from Haynes spread out in front of a fistful of wrenches and baffling car parts. Now the man who started it all, John Haynes, founder of the Haynes Publishing Group and the Haynes International Motor Museum has passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, aged 80. He was famously kind and generous, and he leaves behind a remarkable publishing legacy that started with his first ever book, “Building a 750 Special”. John loved nothing more than riding around the plantation with his father in their Morris 8 saloon. He later moved to the UK to attend boarding school, where he persuaded his house master to allow him to miss rugby and instead work on converting an Austin 7 into a lightweight special. Once finished, he advertised the car for sale, received over 150 replies to the advert, and made a profit, prompting him to produce a booklet showing other enthusiasts how he’d built the car. The first print run of 250 copies sold out in ten days. Then, in 1965, John was posted to Aden, where an RAF colleague bought an Austin-Healey Sprite, and asked John to help him rebuild it. John agreed, and quickly realised that the official factory manual was not designed to help the average car owner. He bought a camera and photographed the process of dismantling and rebuilding the engine; the first Haynes Manual, for the Austin-Healey Sprite, was published in 1966. Its first print run of 3000 sold out in less than three months, and since then over 200 million Haynes Manuals have been sold around the world. He became also became a prolific car collector, and in 1985 he founded the Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset as an Educational Charitable Trust. It now displays more than 400 vehicles, and is enjoyed by over 125,000 people a year. Although he stepped down as Chairman of the Haynes Publishing Group in 2010 he continued to play an active role as Founder Director, and he could be found almost every day of the week taking lunch in the museum’s Cafe 750, chatting with visitors. The car world has lost a remarkable figure.
