I'm a freelance speechwriter by trade and a client asked me to help edit their annual report. I'd not tackled this sort of project before and one of the first things I did was to order Robert Roth's book. It was an excellent starting point; a guide to the nuts and bolts of the process from an author who obviously speaks from experience. While my client did not need me to engage in all the steps Roth outlines (they already had in-house staff who had a created the key message and some of the concept development work was completed) I benefited from an understanding of all the steps. His single best piece of advice: buy a three-ring binder (p. 14). I ended up needing two to file and track all the content. I also took his advice to check out competitive reports (and gave the client a list of their strengths and weaknesses)and developed a questionnaire. While the sample reports (p. 59 -119) were not something I used directly, the comments on each example were a useful training in seeing how the visuals and text must mesh. In summary, there's no earth-shattering insights or amazing trade secrets in this book, simple a very useful set of practical advice in one place.In our advanced writing class, student teams write annual reports for local businesses. Our challenge is to help students who have never written an annual report before find a way into the process, and also to help them to produce documents that are as professional as possible so that the small businesses can use the student-written annual reports as actual communications and marketing tools. We rely heavily on Robert Roth’s book as our textbook and road map through the process of writing these annual reports. IMHO,This book should really be revised and rebranded to expand on its larger mission: 1) utilizing a structured process of discovery and planning for developing messaging 2) methods for incorporating management's strategic objectives into the writing process 3) consistently delivering truthful, trustworthy and compelling message streams to their entire stakeholder audience. 4) creating a synergy between visual design and verbal message. Full disclosure: I have known Mr. Roth for many years and he has many important annual report credits and teaching skills, though we have not worked together directly, and I have no financial interest in his work or his books.It would have saved me lots of false starts, unfounded fears and foolish mistakes. I searched for such a book back then, and, yes, there were plenty on the topic of annual reports. But those books all focused on the design of annual reports or the science of annual reports or the interpretation of annual reports. Not one in the bunch gave meaty guidance on how to sit down and write the darn things. Robert Roth to the rescue. His resourceful book provides a step-by-step guide on how to conceptualize, research, outline and write a great annual report. And, best of all, it's an easy, enjoyable read.
