Other wise the el ectrical systems wi ll be swit ched off, whic h may resul t in loss of control or an accident. EAU10683 LOCK The st eerin g is lo cked, and all el ectri cal systems ar e off. The ke y can be re- moved. To l ock th e stee ring 1. Turn t he ha ndle bars all the w ay to the left. 2. EAU11060 Neutral in dicator light “” This in dicat or li ght com es o n when the transm ission is in the neut ral position. EAU11080 High beam indicator light “” This ind icator li ght comes on when the high be am of th e hea dlight is swi tched on. EAU11365 Fuel level wa rning light “” This warn ing light co mes on when the fuel lev el dro ps belo w appro ximate ly 3.4 L (0. 90 US gal, 0.75 Imp.gal ). Whe n this o ccurs, r efuel as so on as possibl e. The el ectric al circ uit of th e warni ng ligh t can b e chec ked by turni ng th e key t o “ ON ”. The warn ing light s hould com e on for a few s econd s, and then go off. If the warn ing lig ht does no t come on ini tially when th e key is turned to “ ON ”, or if t h e warn ing ligh t remains on, ha ve a Yamah a dealer chec k the ele ctric al circ uit.EAU11534 Engine trouble warning light “” This wa rning light comes on or fla shes if a pr oblem i s detec ted in the el ectric al circu it moni toring the en gine. I f this oc- curs, h ave a Yamaha dealer check the self-dia gnosis system. (See pa ge 4-5 for an expla natio n of the self-d iagnosis device. ) The el ectrical cir cuit of th e warning lig ht can be ch ecked by turnin g the ke y to “ ON ”. T he warn ing light sh ould com e on for a few sec onds, an d then go off. If the w a rnin g light does not co me on initia lly when t he key is turned to “ ON ”, or if t he warning light rema ins on, hav e a Yama ha deal er chec k the el ectric al circuit. EAU45683 Multi-function meter unit W ARNING EWA12422 Be sur e to stop t he vehic le bef ore making any setting changes to the multi-function meter unit. Changing settings while riding ca n distract the opera tor and in crea se th e ris k o f an accid ent. The mu lti-f uncti on mete r unit is equi pped wi th the foll owing:.Fuel gauge The fu el gau ge in dicat es the amount of fuel in th e fuel ta nk. The ne edle moves toward s “ E ” (Empty ) as the fuel level decre ase s. When the ne edl e reac hes “ E ”, approx imate ly 3.4 L (0.9 0 US gal, 0.75 Imp.gal) r emain i n the fuel tank. If this o ccurs, refue l as so on a s possi ble. When t he key is tu rned to “ ON ”, t he fuel gaug e need le w ill s weep o nce acro ss the fue l level ra nge and the n retur n to the curr ent am ount i n order to tes t the electri cal ci rcuit.To reset a trip meter, select it by pus h - ing th e “” or “” si de of the “ SE- LECT ” switch, and then push the “ RESET ” switch for at le ast one sec- ond. I f you do n ot reset the fuel reserv e tripm eter manu ally, it will re set itself a u- tomatica lly, and the displa y will retu rn to the pr ior mode af ter refuel ing and trav eling 5 km (3 mi). Clock The clock displays w hen the k ey is turne d to “ ON ”. Self-diagnosis device This m odel is equi pped wit h a s elf-dia g- nosis device fo r various elec trical cir - cuits. If a p roblem is de tected in a ny of those circu its, th e engin e trou ble war ning l ight will come on or fl ash and the disp lay wi ll indicat e an error code. Sinc e this model i s equi pped wi th a self-can celing system, th e turn signal light s wil l sel f-can cel af ter the ve hicle has tr aveled both ab out 150 m (49 0 ft) and for ap prox imatel y 15 seco nds. Howev er, the t urn signa l light s can a lso be ca ncele d manual ly by pus hin g the switch in aft e r it has returned to the cen- ter p osition. TIP The s elf -cance ling syst em onl y op er- ates w hen th e vehi cle is movi ng, so t hat the tu rn sign al lig hts w ill not s elf-can cel while yo u are stopped a t an intersec - tion. EAU12500 Horn sw itch “” Press th is swit ch to sound the horn. Set thi s swit ch to “” to stop t he engine i n case of an emerge n- cy, such as when the vehi cle overtur n s or wh en the throttl e cab le is s tuck. EAU12711 Star t swit ch “” Push this swit ch to cran k the en gine with t he start er. See pa ge 6-1 for start- ing ins tructio ns prior to starti ng the en- gine. See “ Mu lti-fun ction me ter unit ” on page 4-3 fo r detailed infor mation. EAU42535 “ RESET ” switch This switc h is used to r eset t he tri pme- ters, to set the c lock and to set the brigh tness con trol mode of th e multi- func tion meter unit.To diseng age th e clutc h, pull the lever to ward th e han dle- bar gr ip. To e ngage the clu tch, re lease the lev er. T he le ver s hould be p ulled rapid ly and rel eased slowly for sm ooth clutc h operat ion. The c lutch lever is equip ped with a clutch switch, whi ch is part of t he igni- tion c ircui t cut-of f sys tem. (S ee p age 4-18.) EAU12881 Shift pedal The s hift pedal i s located o n the left side o f the motor cycle an d is use d in combin ation with t he clutch lev e r when shift ing the gear s of the 5- speed c on- stant -mesh tr ansmission e quippe d on this m otor cycle. TIP Use yo ur toe s or heel to shi ft up an d your toe s to s hift down. EAU12890 Brake l ever The br ake lever is located at the ri ght handle bar gr ip. To apply the fron t bra ke, pul l the lever toward the ha ndle- bar grip. 1. Clutch lev er 1. Shift pedal 2. Neutral position 1. To insta ll the fuel t ank cap 1. Insert th e fue l tank cap into the tank op ening with th e key inser ted in the lock an d with the “” mar k facing forwa rd. 2. Turn t he key counterclockwise t o the ori ginal positi on, rem ove it, and then c lose t h e l ock cove r. TIP The fu el tank cap c annot be ins talled unless the key is in th e lock. I n addi tion, the k ey ca nnot be re moved if t he cap is not pro perly ins talle d and lock ed. W ARNING EWA10131 Make su re that t he f uel ta nk cap is properly installed before r iding. Before refuel ing, tu rn off t he en - gine and be sure that no one is sit- ting o n the vehi cle. Ne ver refuel while sm oking, or whi le in the vi - cinity of spar ks, op en flam es, or other so urces of igni tion such as the pi lot li ghts o f wate r heat ers and clothes drye rs. 2. Do not ov erfill th e fuel tan k. Stop filling when the fuel reach es the botto m of the f iller tube. Becau se fuel expand s when it he ats up, heat f rom the e ngine or the s un can cause fuel to spill ou t of the fuel t ank. 3. Wipe up an y sp illed fuel i mmed i- ately. W ARNING EWA15151 Gasoline is pois onous and can cause injury or death. Handle gaso- line with care. Never siphon gaso- line by m outh. If you should swallow some gasoline or inhale a lot of ga s- oline vapor, or get some gasoline in your ey es, see yo ur doct or imm edi- ately. If g asoli ne sp ills o n you r sk in, wash with soap and water. If gaso- line spills on you r clothing, change your clothes. EAU13373 NOT ICE ECA11400 Use only unleaded gasol ine. The use of lea ded gasoli ne will caus e severe damage to internal engine parts, such as t he valve s and pist on rings, as wel l as to the exhaus t syst em. If kno cking (or pinging) oc curs, use a gas oline of a di fferent brand or premi- 1. Fuel tank filler tube 2. Gaso hol co ntaini ng ethan ol can be used if the ethano l con- tent do es not ex ceed 1 0 (E10). EAU13445 Catalytic converters This vehi cle is equip ped w ith ca talyti c convert e rs in the e xhaust system. W ARNING EWA10862 The exhaust system is hot after op- eration. To prevent a fire hazard or burns:.The use of leaded gas oline will cause unre- pairable damage to the cataly tic converter. To do so, tu rn the handl ebar u ntil t he ho les in the t wo bracket s are ali gned, and then lock th e steer ing wit h a suita ble pa d- loc k. EAU14153 Rider seat To remov e th e rider seat 1. Tur n t he key to “ OFF ”, and then turn it to “ OPE N ”. TIP Do not push i nward when turning the key. 2. Pull th e ride r sea t off. To in stall the rid er seat 1. I nsert the p rojecti on on the re ar of the rider seat int o the rider seat holde r as show n, and th en push the fr ont of th e se at down t o lock it in pl ace. The neutral s witch may not be working correctly. The motorc ycle should not be rid den until check ed by a Y amaha dealer. The sidestand s witch ma y not be working correctly.
