Petra 4.0 out of 5 stars At times uncomfortable, at times immensely funny, I really appreciated the writer's candor. It feels wrong to say I enjoyed a book about somebody's struggle with life. But I enjoyed this debut author's writing style, which flowed nicely and was truly engaging. I wanted to find out more about her experience of life at a posh girls' boarding school and was really intrigued to find out whether she felt her therapy had been worthwhile once she had faced up to the erotic transference between her and her therapist. A little more depth and coherence would have been nice. Very readable though, it won Amy Elliott-Smith the 2013 Beryl Bainbridge Award for First Time Author. 3.5 stars. I received a copy from Crooked Cat Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. And it's also really funny. Elliott-Smith's debut novel continues in the same punchy, witty and honest way.http://www.mogadicho.com.br/dual-rectifier-manual-espa-ol.xml

Although the subject matter of this book is a woman struggling to cope with depression, it's dealt with in such a funny manner that you almost forget what a soul destroying illness it can be. Still viewed by many as a taboo subject, Amy Elliott-Smith tackles it with a sledge hammer: she's going to beat the hell out of it if it's the last thing she does. This Author takes an awesome Fictional approach to it, and it is both disturbing and yes, hilarious. Not that depression is a joke, but her humorous approach to the topic is still spot on. I highly recommend reading this book. This is one book that will stick with me for quite awhile I received my requested copy from NetGalley and read and reviewed at my choosing. It has made me be more understanding of depression, and more grateful than ever that I don't have the affliction myself. Hats off to the writer for writing such a beautiful and laugh out loud book. I shall be watching what she comes up with next.Parts of it are humorous and others are downright cheerless. I'm truly not sure what to say about the two years of therapy sessions - were they just time and money wasted. The journey through life seems like it really needs to be ridden on the open top deck of a bus, and not the back seat of the downstairs area. Witty, cringingly sad and.in a very poignant way.it has what seems like a pointless ending. Though, of course, it's not!I took this book into the garden for an afternoon read and devoured it, chuckling all the way through (much to my neighbour's curiousity). 'Slice', the drug dealer (you will have to read to find out how he got his nickname), Zig Zag, the tour guide and his 'descent' and not forgetting a rather seedy character that will have you spitting out your coffee (TIP: put the coffee cup down).all hilarious and very colourful characters. If readng this in public, expect glances. Laugh? You cannot help it. As for Amy.I would just like to say that you 'are' good enough. A thoroughly good read and recommended. This is an excellent book that the depression doubters need to read.Highly readable, highly recommend.Loved it loved it!! I hope Amy continues to write, as long as she still makes time for grooming my dogs too! Spending your life with depression, working with bitches is the worst of the worst. Ultimately, the question she must ask is. Can I carry on? A quivering wreck, confined to her room in fear of an irrational and sticky end, Amy began to write.Love She was so funny and friendly to everyone I had to read her book. I'm glad I did and I hope to see her stand up comedy and read her follow up work again very soon. I wish you lots of luck and success Amy. Laughed and cried. Brilliantly written. Keep writing them. More please! Hugely enjoyable and humorous with great pathos. Though I thought I did not know anyone unfortunate enough to struggle with depression, after reading this I recognize some of the traits described: the moodiness, the insecurity, the morbidness, and, I'm happy to say, the humour. One never knows what is happening in the thoughts of those around us and I am grateful for this valuable insight. I am a firm fan having read 'A Guide To Becoming Distinctly Average'. Please keep me laughing and write another wonderful novel. It is brilliant! Funny and poignant in equal measure and emphatically engaging from start to finish. Apparently this is Amy’s first novel but I find that hard to believe, there must be more from her out there! I suffer from depression from time to time and could really identify with the author. Brilliant writing and so funny it made me think about my depression in a lighter way. It presents the illness of depression in all its despair yet manages to be screamingly funny. The episode with the kangaroo costume had me laughing out loud, tears rolling down my cheeks, and I cried at the end too - for a different reason. Readers who are fellow depressives will be encouraged and heartened, whilst those of us lucky enough not to suffer, will get an insight as never before into both the ups and downs of depression. Well done Amy, you deserve to win! A real rib tickler!! Very enjoyable - funny and enlightening and extremely touching. Highly recommend! Hurry up book number two that's what I say! But it was also one of the funniest books I've read in years. I read in bed and my husband got quite annoyed with me laughing out loud as he was trying to get to sleep. Highly recommended. I smiled, felt sad, laughed out loud then wished I had written it myself:-) Absolute delight! It wasn't in the slightest bit depressing considering the subject matter. Really did make me laugh a lot though wish it had been longer. Would easily have enjoyed reading another 200 pages. I read it in 4 hours and it stayed in my mind for days. I cannot believe this is a debut novel. So funny. I have never read anything quite like it. This lady is going to be very, very successful very, very soon!! As a therapist, I loved the 'Sigmund Avoid' chapter - it made me cringe and laugh out loud. I'm really looking forward to the next book by this author. It struck a chord with me and made me laugh a lot. Thank you for writing this book Amy Eliot Smith. Good luck. It's both funny and moving. Without derision or making fun of the condition of depression I believe Amy Elliot-Smith has used her intelligence, wit and natural gift of story telling to show us that those who have depression are not 'weak' and don't spend their life staring worriedly through the window at the rain. Depression is a medical condition, like having a kidney stone, however, unlike having empathy and understanding for the latter, people, will shuffle off, feeling uncomfortable if you mention depression. I'm sure A Guide to Becoming Distinctly Average will bring about a shift in how we view what is still a taboo subject. BUY IT! Looking forward to your next work. I loved every line and hope it gets recognition it deserves. You will laugh so hard that you'll draw a lot of attention to yourself! She has great skill as a wordsmith and her observations can leave you either laughing out loud or deeply silenced by the poignancy of her feelings. Her honesty is humbling. She's opened her heart to her readers and it's a privilege to be invited in. I've been very moved by this book and I hope that it's an outright winner. Everyone I know who has read it has loved it; well worth a read. His hands roamed over my back and moved up to my neck, pressing me to his mouth, gripping it like he was claiming me, like he fucking owned me.
