We may earn money from the links on this page. With its 7800-rpm redline, 180 horsepower that peaks just 200 rpm before that, and an aggressive VVTL-i electronically variable valve-timing-and-lift scheme, the 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve engine in Toyota's Celica GT-S is plenty edgy. Plus, it's backed by a six-speed manual transmission, and the body wrapped around that engine looks as though it were designed with a knife. But the suspension, while generating impressive performance numbers, feels more civilized than aggressive. Although that constitutes a pretty thorough reconstruction of the suspension, the rest of this TRD Celica is only modestly twisted. TRD claims the improved breathing of the exhaust and intake is worth an additional 14 hp over stock, but it makes no assertions for the body bits beyond claiming that high-schoolers dig them. On the tight Streets of Willow road course, the TRD-modified Celica's turn-in is dramatically better than stock, and when the inevitable understeer arrives, it's modest. Steering effort seems greater than stock, more so than might be expected for a car whose tire contact patch has expanded only 10mm at each corner. Despite bigger tires and thicker bars, the TRD Celica only matched our last GT-S's 0.86-g skidpad orbit. Getting the most of the chassis changes on the track probably means adopting beefier rubber than this car's modest upgrade. On the road, there's notably more noise transmitted from the tires into the cabin than stock. That's not surprising, given the harsher springs and harder bushings, and it's just irritating enough that the sound could be maddening during daily commutes. The exhaust system adds to the cacophony, and the change in air filters is, we assume, responsible for the more pronounced octave shift as the VVTL-i variable valve timing kicks in at about 6000 rpm.http://www.mariapitanga.com.br/admin/uploads/dsc-4501-installation-manual.xml But although the exhaust and the intake change the sound of the Celica, there's nothing to indicate that they make it quicker. The TRD car's 7.5-second 0-to-60-mph clocking is 0.3 second slower than the last stock machine we tested, and the TRD's quarter-mile time of 15.7 seconds at 92 mph is 2 mph slower. There's no reason TRD's changes should have made the car much faster, but they shouldn't have slowed it down. We can only guess at the reasons for this small disparity. This makes it important that you pay attention to the following symptoms and problems on this page if you want to avoid a major repair. Automatic Transmission Symptoms In This Page: Grinding or shaking sensation in gear Car won't engage or respond when in gear Makes Noises: whining, humming or clunking, noisy in neutral Smells like its burning Gears Slipping Low or leaking fluid Check engine light is on This article may ease your mind, or it may make alarm bells go off in your head. Either way we aim to help you with the information below. Armed with the right knowledge, you can make a well-informed decision about what to do (if anything). These Automatic Transmission Symptoms Are Telling You to Pay Attention Your Automatic transmission is a very complex mechanical and computer driven system. Because of that your automatic transmission can be more expensive to repair than your engine (depending on your particular car). That means you are better off paying attention if one of these symptoms appear rather than ignoring or waiting for it to go away. It can cost you a lot of inconvenience and money if you neglect its service. 1. Grinding or shaking sensation in gear Your automatic transmission normally operates smoothly when shifting from gear to gear. You shouldn't feel any grinding, slipping or shaking sensations as your car switches gears. When a transmission is starting to have problems, these symptoms can seem insignificant. But, it is best to pay attention at this point because it will likely become worse with use. If you are already feeling pretty jarring sensations when the car shifts, it's time to get it in have us look at it. Normally when automatic transmissions have damaged gears they progressively get worse. Summary: This is a more serious problem and time is very important. Be sure to get your car to a qualified automatic transmission specialist soon. 2. Car won't engage or respond when in gear When you put your car into drive or reverse does it respond immediately or is there a delay. Does the car's transmission not engage at all when you put it in drive or reverse. These are both issues that may signal a problem. It could indicate a problem with your fluid whose protective properties have degraded and has become thick. In this case a good fluid exchange could help you. Other times you may be experiencing a computer system problem. Sometimes resetting the car's computer can solve the problem too. You can do this yourself by disconnecting the battery for around 30 minutes. This can allow it to reset. If this doesn't help, it's time to let a qualified transmission mechanic take a look for you. Summary: When your automatic transmission doesn't engage or delays, it's time to have someone look at it. That trouble may likely be minor, but it could signal something worse. Some noises that come from your transmission can be caused by your automatic transmission fluid breaking down. This fluid has a hefty job of keeping an amazing amount of mechanical gears and components lubricated. With time and use, that fluid loses its protective properties and doesn't stop that friction. Friction is what damages that complex automatic transmission system. If you hear clunking noises and suspect it's coming from the transmission, your transmission may already have an internal part giving out. If that's the case, it's important to have a qualified automatic transmission mechanic look at it right away. Summary: Some noises may be simple problems due to your transmission fluid, while other times it maybe more serious. Certainly check your automatic transmission fluid if you can. If you're low, add some and get into the shop soon to talk with one of our transmission mechanics about the issue. If you're not sure and need peace of mind, call or visit the shop right away. 4. Smells like its burning Your car should NOT have a burning smell and this is something to be concerned about. One of the most common causes of a burning smell from the transmission is overheated fluid. Your transmission's fluid has a super-important role in protecting this very expensive and complex system running properly. Mainly it is lubrication. When your transmission fluid's lubricating abilities diminish, as it does with time and mileage, it enables damaging friction between all the parts. Friction causes the breakdown of parts and buildup of debris and likely sludge. All of these problems together eventually lead to a complete transmission breakdown. That is expensive and quite inconvenient. Sometimes the cause is simply low transmission fluid level. That is usually caused by a leak because in most cars unlike motor oil, transmission fluid doesn't lessen with time. Also, this can happen with the wrong type of fluid added to your particular vehicle. Summary: If you smell burning from your transmission it’s time to act before it’s a big problem. Check your fluid level if you know how and call or visit us to find out the cause and ease your mind. 5. Gears Slipping Does your car slip out of gear or lose traction when you need it. This is a serious safety problem if so. If your transmission is slipping in and out of gears when you’re behind the wheel, and you need to give it the gas to avoid a problem, that is scary. Your car’s computer tells the transmission when to shift between one gear and another. It tells your car when to send power to your wheels. If something is malfunctioning here the signal is not being properly sent. If you feel like you can’t trust your car to drive it here, call us and we can arrange a tow for you. 6. Low or Leaking Transmission Fluid Have you seen a bright red or possibly dirty dark red fluid on your driveway or garage floor. You are likely seeing Automatic Transmission fluid. Unlike motor oil, transmission fluid does not normally lessen due to time and mileage. So, if you’re seeing that you are low on transmission fluid, then you have a leak somewhere. Low fluid can create great friction in your transmission which will breakdown parts inside and eventually lead to a complete transmission breakdown. How serious is low or leaking transmission fluid. If you do nothing, it will turn into a very serious problem. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. Sometimes a leak is a low cost service just to replace a leaking gasket or possibly a hose. Just remember, don’t neglect a small problem in your transmission unless you want a big problem later. Summary: Leaks and low fluid are not normal in your transmission. The repair is likely a smaller one if you catch the problem early. Look for red fluid under your car to tell if you have a leak. Get it into the shop right way before it’s a big problem. 7. Check engine light is on Your “Check Engine” light is there to help you know there is a current or upcoming problem in your car. But the light can indicate a problem from many different systems in your car, not just your transmission. These sensors send signals to your computer that something is wrong. Then, the check engine light passes on that message to you that something is wrong. Why have the check engine light checked out. Well, that’s because if the problem is related to your transmission and an early detection indicates a problem, your solution may be small. If you wait, you could have just caused yourself a whole lot of unnecessary grief and money. Summary: If your check engine light is on, have it checked immediately. It may be a very small thing that your computer has sensed and could save you 1000’s due to a repair. Conclusion Many problems with your transmission start off small. Ignoring the signals like the symptoms listed above usually lead to super-costly repairs. Some repairs are small and affordable and they can prevent a huge bill later on. If peace of mind and your money is important to you and you experience any of these automatic transmission problems give us a call or bring your car by the shop to get our opinion. Most time and money needs to be spent on product development and setting up the sales channels. He knows that there are some legal requirements for the content of the manual and he wants a well designed and user-friendly instructional manual that contributes to a good customer experience. I decided to walk him through the entire process and developed an instruction manual template for him. Here’s what happened. The results are as follows: Although Philip used one of our paid templates, I have made a free template that you can use to achieve exactly the same results. There is only one difference. We have developed user manual templates for machinery, toys, medical devices and electronics that contain all legal content. I provided him with some general information about user instructions and with some good examples of existing user manuals. A good user manual assists users on how to use a product safely, healthily and effectively. A well-drafted user manual only provides that information that is relevant for the intended user of the product. A good user manual should answer HOW and WHAT questions. They should contain information about what happens if a task is not done correctly. Typical user types are the end-user, installer, maintenance engineer and operator. Each user type needs a different approach in terms of language to be used, the tone of voice and provided conceptual information. A product can be a system, tool, device, an instrument, a piece of software or an app. Depending on the type of product, a user manual might include things as: The template contains all the information and more from the list above. It complies with the requirements for his product. The user manual template is an MS Word document that can be printed or placed online. Each tool has its own advantages and disadvantages. I will mention the most common tools below: Through the following links you can download a user manual sample for documentation: Let’s dive into the details and actions. This can be done by creating a user profile, also named a persona. This is not only useful for creating your user instructions, but it is an essential element at the start of the development of any product. As an educated industrial design engineer, this is how we started all our design assignments. That’s why I asked Philip to define his users and answer questions like: What describes the user? I asked Philip to fill out the template. Please note that the second tab also contains Philip’s answers, so you have an example of how the sheet could be used. So if you want to take defining your user one step further, I would suggest you visualise your user in the form of a persona. When creating a persona you are giving your user a name, age et cetera, so it becomes a real person that represents your user. This is the result: Typical problems might include: installing the product, using the product, using the product safely, maintaining the product and disposing of the product. In order to do so, I created another template for Philip. In the left column of the Lifecycle tab, the stages of a product’s lifecycle are mentioned. Our user manual templates are compliant with this standard. In other words: Philip has defined the topics for his user manual. Each topic can only be about one specific subject, has an identifiable purpose, and must be able to stand alone. A user wants to solve one problem at a time.It can be a chapter or a (sub-)paragraph. As soon as a user is looking for an answer to his problem, he will use the table of contents to find out how to navigate to that answer. Start numbering PREPARATION PRODUCT FOR USE with number 4. We will add some more chapters in the next step. The ToC is the outline of your user manual. The headings are the (sub-)titles that precede the actual text. They appear in the ToC, so the user can navigate to the needed information. A third-level heading uses noun-phrases (e.g. Packaging contents and Tools to be used ). The heading Making Pancakes is much more user-oriented than Using the MagicCook5000. If the section covers the maintenance and repair of a product, the heading Maintenance would be incomplete. Pro tip: when there is a Declaration of Conformity available already, you can find the applicable directives in there. If the product is too small this can be placed in the user manual. If the product is too small this can be placed in the user manual. Safety information shall be provided in order to inform the user of measures to be taken. Compliance with harmonised standards provides a presumption of conformity with the corresponding legislation! Without removing and mandatory elements of course. Notice! Do not adjust the Table of Contents. The table of contents can be updated automatically once you have adjusted the section headings. And once you have determined the intended use, you can focus on providing only those safety and user instructions for how to use the product within the given envelope. If the defectiveness of a product needs to be determined, all circumstances will be taken into account. That includes the reasonably foreseeable use of the product. For example, if a cooling system is only used for cooling certain medications, then only these procedures need to be described. When it could reasonably be foreseen that the cooling system may be used as a system to cool organs, this should be described in the instructions. By doing so, you, as the manufacturer, will limit your liability and you can focus on only describing how to use the system to cool medicines. A risk analysis can also be mandatory for certain product groups, such as low-voltage equipment, toys, machinery and equipment for use in explosive atmospheres. The ISO 12100 also gives a method for taking mitigation measures: the Three-Step Method. According to this method, there is the following hierarchy of risk-reducing measures: This is done with safety warnings. The ANSI Z535.6 standard describes the following locations in the user manual where this could be: General text general text general text. 3. Do this. This may also be describing special tools or space for maintenance and repair. These templates contain all legal texts, mandatory disposal information, copyright statements and comply with the IEC 82079 standard on user instructions. Finding the right information that solves the user’s problem should take as little time as possible. We call this version the textual content design. As Philip has a business partner and a developer with in-depth technical product knowledge, I asked Philip to let them review the work so far. Both his business partner and the developer provided feedback. Philip used this feedback to optimize the user manual. Action: Send the draft version of the user manual to anyone within your team who might be able to deliver feedback. Ask them to combine all feedback into one document before sending it back to you. This stimulates discussion of your team members and prevents disagreement at a later stage. This means that any images can now be created and added to the content. As images should support, replace, or augment text, you want to wait to create them until the texts are final.
