Eager to please and hopeful that her olfactory gifts will win her recognition, Marion concocts memorable fragrances. Then, to her horror, credit is bestowed on someone else. Marion feels betrayed. Now Marion opens her eyes and ears (in addition to her nose!) and realizes that beneath the splendor of palace life is a place teeming with deceit. To survive, she must use her keen sense of smell not to create perfumes, but to thwart those who would do her -and one of France’s beloved monarchs- great harm. This place oozes grandeur, opulence, extravagance. We’ve never seen anything quite like it. Footballers’ wives eat your heart out. Apparently half of France’s GDP was spent on the Palace. It actually started out as a fairly modest hunting lodge until King Louis XIV came along and started adding wings, acres of formal gardens, striking fountains decorated with mythical creatures. But it can be overwhelming due its size and the crowds it attracts on a daily basis. So we’ve come up with some tips to help you preserve your sanity whilst visiting with your kiddos! What was I thinking?? Luckily a Parisian friend of mine put me right. So if you can, try to choose a sensible day to visit. Despite our best laid plans, we rocked up at Versailles at 10am and immediately noticed a huge queue snaking backwards and forwards across the foreground of Versailles. The lady at the tourist office strongly recommended that we visit the Palace first as the queues would only get longer, the more you wait.The crowds and accompanying elbowing can be really overwhelming for little ones (adults too!). I would imagine that visiting with small children could be challenging and probably not something I would have endeavoured when mine were tiny tots. So spare a thought for your little ones and perhaps consider just doing the gardens. That’s a lot of ground to cover in one day! Spend the first day visiting the Palace and the Gardens. On day 2, visit Marie-Antoinette’s Hamlet, the Petit Trianon and the Grand Trianon. You’ll see people jogging, biking, lazing on the grass, munching on a baguette. So why not head there with your picnic, take in the atmosphere and enjoy the fabulous backdrop. This piece of advice popped up so many times during my research. So make sure you pack snacks, drinks and even some travel games. Avoid the long queues and the overpriced tourist fare. We were starting to feel a little weary after our morning spent queuing followed by the Palace visit and so the train was an excellent option. It gives you a chance to rest, take in the views, get an idea of the scale of the grounds and of course, it’s also a fun mode of transport. It stops at 3 different places and you can hop-on and hop-off as often as you like. We liked the idea of the golf buggy but there was a long queue for them and it was quite pricey. The bike hire stands weren’t as close to the Palace (we were tired!) and so the train won in the end. That would be a fun option too but probably more suitable with older children. I always try to get the kids involved with history and all, but I’ve never thought of fun facts. Will do that next time we go out! We were just there in March with a six and and eight year old and found our experience to be very similar. We did find that you could bend the audioguide for under eight year old rule a bit and that made a lot of difference for the inside since both my kids love audioguides. Well, for about 30 minutes anyway. My kids favourites were the Grand Trianon (just as spectacular, more manageable size) and the farm animals in Marie Antoinette’s garden. I love how kids can totally ignore the grand buildings and then spend half an hour ripping up handfuls of grass to feed to a goat! We absolutely relate to divide and conquer, get your priorities and sparkle their interest strategies. Versailles was France’s royal palace from the late seventeenth century until the French Revolution and is certainly the most opulent building I’ve ever toured and the clearest symbol of royal excess. A visit to the Versailles Palace was high on the to do list during our visit to Paris with our three kids, ages 3, 8 and 10. Although it did require a trip out of the city center, we really enjoyed visiting the Palace of Versailles with kids. The Sun King’s reign began when he was only four years old and lasted 72 years, making him the longest recorded monarch in Europe. Louis XIV enjoyed Versailles as a primary residence for over 30 years until his death in 1715. Because Louis XIV’s eldest son and eldest grandson, each also named Louis, both predeceased him, the Sun King’s five year old great-grandson, Louis XV succeeded him. The reign of Louis XV lasted 59 years. Louis XV’s eldest son (yup, another Louis) predeceased him, and so Louis XV was succeeded by his grandson, Louis XVI. These combined six Louises each married a woman named Marie or Maria, except the Louis XV’s son, who married one of each.A few months later, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were famously beheaded in the Place de la Concorde. Versailles was opened as a museum in 1837. In addition to its stunning Baroque architecture, Versailles includes 700 rooms, 5,000 pieces of antique furniture and 6,000 notable paintings.We found this guide very helpful for step by step directions. Our three year old daughter did not require a ticket. The four of us each received two tickets (one for our journey there and one for our return) and were careful to keep the two sets separate before we began our journey. We traveled by Metro one stop on the B5 Metro to St. By the time the train to Versailles arrived at the platform, there was definitely a crowd of waiting tourists. Our day at Versailles also happened to be the hottest day during our time in Paris. We arrived at about 10 am and were amazed at the length of the line to purchase tickets and also the security line, which was about two hours long and without shade. Although the Royal Gate, which is decorated with 100,000 gold leaves with the Palace behind, is a breathtaking sight, we were very grateful to have expedited entry on this hot morning. The Palace was extremely packed. Although not quite the shoulder to shoulder crowd that we found in the Vatican Museums, it was challenging at times for the five of us to stay together and to focus on the informative audioguide while absorbing these incredible rooms. My three year old daughter asked to be carried at times, but the knowledge that princesses had lived in the Palace held her interest, and she enjoyed wandering from room to room. I imagined Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette’s basking in the glory of this room during their wedding reception as I walked through the Hall where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919. Free Wifi is available in the courtyard and in the entrance to the Gardens but is spotty. The Gardens of Versailles are the finest French formal gardens. We enjoyed sneak peek views of the lavish gardens from the Palace windows. It would be a wonderful place to sit in the shade if benches and shade were more plentiful.Groves expand out from either side of the Royal Drive in an elaborate grid. Our boys decided to race each other down the Royal Drive to stretch their legs and returned desperate for water, so we headed to a snack area for drinks and ice cream. In the meantime, my daughter stumbled on the gravel path and skinned her knee, and I discovered that I did not have any band-aids with me. While she was reiterating that she needed a band-aid, a woman standing in front of us in the bathroom line reached into her handbag and offered her two. Note to self: make sure to carry a stash of band aids in every handbag so that I can pay this kindness forward. The water display was part of the Garden’s Musical Fountain Shows, which feature over 50 water fountains accompanied by classical music. Sandals are doable, but with the dust, I would have preferred sneakers. Entry to the Gardens is free except when the Musical Fountain Shows or the Musical Gardens occur. Visiting Versailles and its unparalleled Palace and Gardens was a truly enchanting, bucket-list adventure. It may have been a particularly tiring day, but one we will never forget. The Palace of Versailles is a must for many visitors. Where better than visiting a royal palace with our princess? My favorite and most memorable parts of the day were not the ones I expected. We also learned a lot about getting to and from Versailles, tours and services. I knew it was huge and I knew it was outside of Paris, so the excursion was intimidating. I spent some time on the official website and looked at a few tours and decided that the DIY approach was the best option for my family's interests and budget. The official website and app are filled with helpful information to help you plan your day. There are many ticket options, and the good news is that all kids under age 18 get in FREE. If you visit on a day when the Musical Fountain Show is on, you will need to purchase a reduced-price Passport for children over age 5 to visit the gardens and see the shows. It was an off-day for the Fountain show, so our kids got in free. In hindsight, timed entry wasn't necessary on the mid-June weekday we visited, but I've read that lines can be 1-2 hours long. Guided tours of closed sections of the Palace of Versailles are also available through the official website. It's easy to get there on the RER C train. The trip takes about 45-60 minutes each way. For the only time during our Paris trip, we couldn't figure out which train was the right one. So of course, we got on the wrong train. It turned out that we didn't need to worry because both trains end within walking distance of the Palace of Versailles. It was just a slightly longer walk from the “wrong” station. The self-guided tour will lead you through the famous Hall of Mirrors and a number of the public and private rooms in the palace. It takes about an hour to walk through without an audio guide or tour, and it's just a fraction of the thousands of rooms in the palace. However, I loved the gardens and Trianon Estate even more. We loved meandering down the hill, through maze-like hedges to the Trianon Estate and Grand Canal. I rowed first, and then my husband took a turn. My 11-year-old son wanted his own turn, and he did a great job. The birthday girl was happy to just hang out and take lots of photos. Renting the boat was an unplanned splurge, but I'm so glad we did it. It helped me savor our Versailles experience and that memory is well worth the expense. The gardens and park are very large and the walk to the Trianon Estate is more than 2 km each way. We loved exploring the grounds and buildings on foot, and spent most of our day outdoors. Each of these requires an additional fee. Your options include: Marie Antoinette preferred to spend much of her time at Petit Trianon instead of the main palace. Grand Trianon was the palace of Louis XIV's mistress. We ran out of time and energy to see the Queen's Hamlet, which gives us a reason to return. Seeing all of Versailles in one day is challenging on foot. If you want to cover more ground, consider a tour, tram ticket or rental. You'll find gift shops and restaurants at the Palace, Trianon Estate and in the gardens. I surprised her with a colorful box of macarons for her birthday, which helped make the day extra special. We sampled lots of macarons in Paris, and agree that Laduree is the best. We picked up baguettes, ham, cheese, fruit and drinks at a grocery store near the train station and stored them in our day packs. We enjoyed our inexpensive picnic in the gardens, which is now a fun family memory. I hope our experience helps you make the most of your day at Versailles. Hotel Collection I had just finished reading The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette by Carolly Erickson, and had visions of strolling in the gardens with the fountains on full display and playing with the kids in Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet. This idyllic vision took a darker turn, filled with tantrums and whining, and felt more like a mini-French Revolution than the lovely family adventure I had planned. However, what I failed to realize with Versailles is that it’s not really geared toward kids. It has lots of open spaces in the gardens to run and play and I thought this would be enough — it wasn’t. We needed to be more intentional in our planning, like researching Versailles bike rental in advance, to make the day trip more successful. Before you go, consider the ages of your kids and the amount of time you have in Paris. A friend who lives in Paris told me that he never recommends Versailles to visitors if they only have three or four full days in the city. It is one of the most popular day trips from Paris, but with limited time in the city, a full day away just doesn’t make sense. We would have enjoyed a day at the Luxembourg Gardens and sightseeing in Paris more than the full day we spent at Versailles. Versailles opens at 9 a.m. in the summer. We arrived at 11 a.m. and the line was already very long. That said, avoiding the crowds at Versailles is nearly impossible. Be prepared for thousands and thousands of people to be joining you that day and plan accordingly. The chateau closes at 6:30 p.m. We entered the chateau at 5 p.m. and, while the line outside was short, inside was another story. We were herded through shoulder-to-shoulder and encouraged to keep moving. We had to hold hands in order not to get separated. There are a variety of tours that leave from Paris and include a visit to a market for picnic supplies before visiting Versailles. Most guided tours for families focus on the gardens and grounds and provide expedited entrance into the chateau but not a guided visit inside. We especially love Versailles bike tours for families looking for an active day trip. My biggest regret, after not arriving early, is that we did not use the little train or rent a golf cart while touring the gardens. If your kids are proficient bike riders, you can also rent bikes at Versailles. It was hot and we were all tired; a golf cart or train would have made this so much more pleasant and fun. What kid wouldn’t remember driving around Versailles in a golf cart? Plan to spend the entire day, but make sure you visit the Versailles website to understand when and where everything takes place and how much it will cost. There is so much to do at Versailles that you’ll get more out of it if you have a strategy and know where you want to go — it’s not all evident. I was interested in seeing the equestrian show or just the horses, but we never even found the stables! It’s a little out of the way and you cannot enter the buildings, but the hamlet feels like a fairy tale, and in fact it was Marie Antoinette’s escape from palace life. Parents in the know bring bread and kids of all ages break their stale baguettes and toss them at the eager ducks. It was unclear if we could picnic at Versailles, so I didn’t bring much food. There were no formal picnic areas, but there are several restaurants and casual cafes in the gardens, and definitely areas where you can sit and have a snack. We found local families having picnics and playing soccer at a park near the entrance to the Trianons. Most tourists head right back to Paris after their visit. Since it was almost dinner time, we decided to stay and have dinner in the town of Versailles. We found a cute street full of outdoor sidewalk cafes on Rue au Pain about a 10-minute walk from the chateau. We ended our very challenging day on a happy note. She replied, “You mean the one with the gardens. Yes, but why didn’t we take the choo-choo?” Enough said. I recently had a bad day at Disneyworld Orlando with my kids in spite of meticulous planning:(. And now I am again planning Versailles with a 5 yr old and a 1.5 yr old.
