Yes and no, the senior person doing the maintenance will sign. That means that person completed and is responsible for maintenance. Being a witness is not enough. 3) In the 3M manual it allows WCS to substitute any tools, materials, or miscellaneous items, correct. Is there a limit to this. You have to justify it is the correct tool and meets all requirements. 4) Am I still allowed to assign myself maintenance. Don't do 2 and 4 unless neccessary to train someone or short on people. You are the WCS. Maintain a neat workcenter administration, don't let people just sign maintenance, ensure they do it correctly. Don't wait until an inspection to fix your admin. The only thing I wanna add though, 3) You can substitute any common hand tools, I would never recommend substituting any measuring items. So, if I needed a a 7 inch screwdriver, I can use a 10 inch, 4 inch, etc. Just make sure that if there is ever a spotcheck, make sure the tool will fit the job. Its hard to prove you did a MRC with a tool when that tool would not even fit in a cramped space. Additionally, you're a new workcenter sup, meaning a fresh pair of eyes on the checks. If you see something, even minor with the checks, go ahead and put in the feedback report, that includes better or safer procedures. Also, you might find that the previous WCS had been missing required checks or MIPs. The 3M manual is kind of like the bible here, but be careful what kind of substitutions you allow and how much of the maintenance you allow yourself to do. If you're doing the check to be more familiar with it, that's also fine. If its obvious that you have the backing of the chain, especially with liberty, people will sign. I can think of several times where my chief had to halt liberty before some people got it into their heads that signing or in some cases doing their checks was critical to getting off on time. When they don't listen to you, remember that's why there is a chain of command. The way SKED works now, its meant to be signed for completion, with few exceptions. Our BM shop was the only WC at my last command to get away with this, and I never really bothered to question it as I'm an IT and ITs have no excuse for not being able to log in and sign checks. It isn't really enough to simply assign things in SKED and hope it gets done, you need to have a plan down to the hour it's going to happen. Granted, it wont always happen the way you plan, but you still need to make every effort. If it says lint-free cloth, you need to be able to match that nsn with one of the allowed parts for that listed spin in sked - same goes for Hazmat. Other examples of specific materials are gloves whether it be disposable nitrile or electrical gloves or chemical gloves, brushes (acid swabbing, paint brush), etc. When I'd set up spot checks, I'd always set out all the tools parts and materials on the table with their spmig so that I can quickly validate it off the mrc. If you are able to account for everything that way (not including common tools like pencils, pens, screwdrivers, 1gal plastic bucket, etc.), your maintenance person will be good to go. Alright guys - I did the best I could to split the maintenance evenly this week - whoever gets their maintenance all done(including signing the PMS weekly completion Log) for the week first (excluding dailies) will have the lesser load next week. That gives them ammunition to get them advanced or rewarded. Here it used to be the most senior signed, but it was recently changed to who ever did the actual maintenance, which makes more sense in my opinion. If PO3 did the work, and PO2 just watched, but it was a 2 person check, then PO3 should take credit for it. All bar the Ampex 351 recorder emulation are supplied as standard with the ATS1, but by the time you read this a card should also be available for an ATR102 recorder, and AnaMod are currently working on one for Scotch 111 tape. However, without taking the lid off I wouldn't have known what options were installed, or which positions they occupied. If a vacant machine- or tape?emulation card is selected, the relevant button flashes, which is a nice touch. Everything else — frequency response, noise and distortion — varies with the selected tape emulation and control settings. For those running their studios from environmentally?friendly wind generators, the ATS1 consumes a measly 25W — although I reckon they could get that down to 5W if they used less meter illumination! Obviously, ganged stereo input and output controls would restrict the flexibility of the machine, so I would have much preferred the compromise of rotary switches so that settings could be matched easily and precisely between channels. Moreover, ganging the input and output controls for each channel would be a better idea so that as input drive is increased, output level would reduce correspondingly, to provide unity gain throughout. These small changes would, for me at least, have made the ATS1 far easier and less frustrating to operate. The hiss control introduces a very analogue noise floor that I found a very worthwhile feature indeed, and although I found the control range excessive (I rarely set it higher than about 30 percent) it did seem to add a quality that was very pleasant and natural. Time for another tiny gripe, though: the review machine was supplied without a manual. I was able to access the on?line version, but was a little disappointed with its sketchiness. It gives no information at all on the standard machine or tape?type emulations supplied, or even about the original recorders and tape characteristics that it is trying to emulate. The description of the controls is also very shallow. Not a problem for anyone familiar with the mysteries (and calibration) of analogue tape recorders, but for anyone else, the facilities will remain little more than mysterious tone controls! I also started with the bias and EQ controls at their centre, zero, positions, and found I was getting very good, completely believable results with all recorder and tape emulations, working on a variety of commercial stereo recordings and some of my own recordings and works in progress. Of the many software and (fewer) hardware tape?emulation systems I've tried, without doubt this is the closest yet to being a convincing substitute. Pushing the levels hotter and hotter, the bottom end started to fill out and the dynamics became increasingly squashed, before giving way to a lovely organic distortion. Exactly like a tape machine. Wind the bias level back and the high end brightens and smears, introducing edgy sibilance to vocals while simultaneously adding a mid-range fuzz of increasing distortion. But in every other respect it is phenomenally accurate. Stick a 150ms delay on its output and flip the monitoring between direct and processed, and you'd swear blind you were listening off the replay heads of a proper tape machine. That's how convincing it is.
