Bruce Crocker 5.0 out of 5 stars My fears were unfounded and, in fact, it appears that The Thomas Guides have been improved. It is with great relief and excitement that I tell you that the 2003 edition of the California Road Atlas is much better than previous editions. The good parts of this atlas are still there: the tradtional Thomas Bros Pagefinder map, the excellent coverage of urban areas at smaller scales, the easy to use index with page numbers and grids clearly listed. I highly recommend this atlas to anybody who needs a highway atlas of California with detailed maps of urban areas. I've always felt this was a 5 star atlas. The improvements make me wish I could give it 6 stars. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. MMc 3.0 out of 5 stars Colors were not as vivid making it harder to read. Of the few pages I relied on in the first few weeks of use I can say that the map detail is not as good as my older version. The all important page finder map (which is a quick reference overview map of all the pages in the book) is not located in the very front of the book (where it should be for easy and quick reference). I love using a paper road atlas when out venturing in my beloved Californa, and I used my original Thomas Brothers for many years till it finaly wore out. It is a real dissapointment to see that the new version is not a better one.Little did I know that when I ordered the Thomas Guide I was purchasing the very best road map I had ever used. Everything I looked for was there, from crossing the border from Tijuana, to arriving in Santa Barbara, and 1000 miles of driving in between. This guide took a lot of stress out of driving on the California freeway and in and about large cities (San Diego, L.A.) and small towns (Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, La Jolla, Point Loma). If I ever recover from this trip and decide to travel again, I won't leave home without a Thomas Guide.I've used several editions of this atlas since the 1980s for finding my way around California. It includes both state-wide highway maps, regional maps, and selected street-level community maps, which seems to provide the right level of each for finding your way around such a large state in a handy and concise format. For getting around very large urban areas, such as LA, you still would need suppliment this atlas with more street level maps, which I usually print off from the internet ahead of time. So, there still is no substiture for planning ahead for road trips.I use this map for all my trips around the state.http://romangruszecki.com/uploaded/elsmar-quality-manual.xml I was really disappointed with the new version for several reasons. 1) Quality of Paper and cover paper is poor. Thin, lightweight and won't be long before it rips. 2) The map colors are very light and lack the contrast of the old maps making reading them hard to read. 3) The fonts and lines seem thinner and smaller and very hard work for people who wear glasses. 4) They have tried to cram in more information in less maps. THe whole things seems scaled down. Overall it is still a Thomas Guide to CA. Which offers the most detailed maps of the state. Buy a used older version though as you will have a hard time reading the new maps.We intend to take it in our RV as a backup to the GPS.Good format. I'm so sorry to read that subsequent purchasers of newer editions are unhappy. Seller, booklot22, sent it promptly and with a smiley face. Normally this would not merit a reaction from me except for the fact that the map-book is so sterling.Great conditionThere didn't appear to be much choice when I searched online and in shops for a good road atlas that included both California and parts of Nevada so I took a bit of a gamble on this one. I have to say, it really paid off. This road atlas is very well organised. It has four different levels of detail. You use the page finder map at the front which has an overview of the whole area covered by the atlas to locate your area of interest. This guides you to a 'highway map' which shows all major roads, then you can zoom in further to include more minor roads, and finally some areas have street maps. It fulfilled our every need on holiday. We drove over 500 miles, from Anaheim to Las Vegas then to Westlake Village to the North-West of LA. I had printed off google maps routing our journey, but didn't need them at all, other than to what route to take. The only down side for me (although this could be an advantage for others) was the index which comes in several different sections (street index, points of interest etc.) which made in hard at times to look up a road quickly. I thoroughly recommend this road atlas but make sure you study its layout and how to use it before you go. I really don't know how we would have got by without it!Insoweit ist ein Detailatlas sehr nutzlich, wenn auch schwergewichtig. Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1 Previous page Next page. Please try again. Please try again. Please try again. Know where you need to go, but don't quite know how to get there. It lists campgrounds, State Parks and little known places just begging for you to enjoy. California is a place for all types to recharge their batteries and this is the perfect book to help you find the places that can do just that. You just can't get this detailed of info. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. (Hungary) 5.0 out of 5 stars GPS batteries can croak and wreak havoc and it can make it easy to lose your way. This is clear and concise and very helpful even just getting around town. I have only desperately needed it once trying to get to someone's house when my phone died and I didn't know how to get to a friend's house. It is exactly as listed minor wear but otherwise great shapeA lot of information in the back of the bookThis 2004-5 version is too detailed to use and read while on the road and follow while driving. The plus is that it has more detailed city maps. Hear our news on-air at our partner site: So what happened to the Thomas Brothers and the guide company that bears their name. And what was the guide's significance to Los Angeles. Let's explore. THE THOMAS BROTHERS: EARLY BEGINNINGS Thomas Bros. Maps was established in Oakland in 1915 by cartographer George Coupland Thomas and his two brothers. What began as a company that made wall maps expanded into block, community and tourist maps. Glen Creason, the map librarian at downtown's Central Library who takes care of a collection of nearly 250 Thomas Guides, said they initially made fold-up maps that could fit into a '40s men's suit pocket. In 1945 they started the book format that we still recognize today, sized to fit inside a glove compartment. Creason said there were other mapmakers in Los Angeles, most notably the Automobile Club of Southern California and Gillespie's Guide. There were also smaller companies that sometimes tried to copy Thomas Bros. Maps' cartography. So Thomas Guides put in fake streets or towns, so they could catch copycats. In the 1970's, he bought out the whole company and moved it to Irvine. Even as Thomas Bros.In the 1990s, the company made a computer database of its maps with a system for cartographers to update and edit the information, a la Wikipedia. It also started selling map data to utilities and cities in California. ATTEMPTED EXPANSION AND THE RISE OF DIGITAL Even though Thomas Bros. Maps made strides in the digital landscape, and even sold its guides via CDs, the rise of digital map sites changed the game for physical mapmakers. At the same time, in the 90s, the Thomas company made an unsuccessful foray into the east coast. According to Nathanson, the attempted entry into the beltway was costly and ultimately the company didn't have the brand name or resources to compete with already established map companies. Meanwhile, in-dash car navigation systems and websites like MapQuest became more popular. A larger map and Atlas maker called Rand McNally had been trying to buy Thomas Bros. Maps and Nathanson said his grandfather could see the writing on the wall. Toward the end of 1998, Wilson made a deal to sell the company to McNally. Nathanson, who had worked in various departments at the Thomas company while in college, and then worked in sales after graduating, stayed on for four more years after the company was sold. He said it has since been bought and sold by venture capitalists. Some versions of the Thomas Guide can still be bought, but for the most part, they've faded from prominence. (Though not for everyone!) Los Angeles is bigger than most cities, he said. When automobiles went into mass production, it was the Automobile Club of Southern California, not the government, that put up the first street signs, but there was still a comprehensive map needed to make the city navigable.Listen to it here on KPCC's AirTalk. ( January 2008 ) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message ) Thomas Guide is the title of a series of paperback, spiral-bound atlases featuring detailed street maps of various large metropolitan areas in the United States, including Boise, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Reno-Tahoe, Sacramento, San Francisco, Seattle, Tucson, and Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. Road Atlas titles are Arizona including Las Vegas, California Including portions of Nevada, and Pacific Northwest covering Washington, Oregon, Western Idaho, Southwestern British Columbia. The map books are usually arranged by county; for example, separate Thomas Guides have been published for Los Angeles County and San Diego County. There are also guides that will have two or three counties combined (for example, Los Angeles and Orange County ), or guides that cover a metropolitan area (for instance, the San Francisco Bay Area ). Each guide has a detailed index of streets and points of interest, as well as arterial maps for easy page location. The company had grown to publish street maps of cities in several Western states; these maps were sold in fold-out, card stock covers. By the late 1940s, the company had added pocket-sized guidebooks of California and the city of San Francisco which included fold-out maps attached to the inner rear cover. For 40 years Wilson served as CEO and owner of Thomas Bros. Maps and was responsible for leading the company into the digital age. The Thomas Brothers map database had a monopoly in the 1990s, since they had the best street address indexes in them, making them very good for address matching for businesses. The company also intended to conquer the East Coast, but failed to compete against existing mapmakers there. The Rand McNally CEO announced all Irvine data edits would be outsourced to Bangalore, India. The remaining Irvine employees would send and manage the data to and from India and check the map work India editors did before publishing. The valued POI index was no longer updated. Thinner and cheaper paper was used in the map guides. The Irvine source department was closed and no customer corrections were taken or recorded. Many guides were no longer printed yearly. The book name was dropped to just Thomas Guide and colors changed to match Rand McNally colors and product line releases. The popular map store was closed at the Irvine building, which was the last TBM store to close after they shut the ones in San Francisco, downtown Los Angeles, and the South Coast Plaza Mall years earlier. The map guides still sell, but the famous digital map database is now outdated. Rand McNally now buys their map data and updates from the big map digital data companies like Teleatlas and Navteq. They overlay the new streets on their old database for publication.Maps were drawn in various scales and sizes. As communities infilled and expanded during the post-war period, this presented problems because the early base maps did not account for the earth's curvature. Large wall maps were mosaics of smaller units making street alignment interesting. Easter-egg, or deliberate errors, were included on maps to help protect copyrights. They were the first map company to start a map education foundation that trained teachers on geography and interesting map lessons and donated map materials to area schools. They were also the first map publishing company to set up a computer map database that could have sections checked out by cartographers, updated, and then checked back in to a live digital map library with date stamps to keep track of what was edited. They also solved many software digital mapping problems that other companies still use today. And they were the first map company to set up a digital map page and grid look-up system for the whole world. Many old-time TBM map book users can still tell you what page and grid they live on, even though they stopped using the map books years ago. One common use for the wall maps is for delivery businesses, such as a local pizza restaurant. In addition, custom versions of the guides and wall maps are produced for businesses and governments that include such things as census tracts, locations of government facilities, watershed boundaries, and political boundaries. In addition, the Thomas Brothers digital database can be licensed to companies and governments to use as a base map for geographical information systems applications.Rand McNally also releases Thomas Guide-like Street Guides and traditional fold-out versions of maps covering regions of North America not covered by the Thomas Guides.By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. A very fine addition for all music and academic libraries. Containing sections on composers, conductors, individual instrumentalists, symphony orchestras, opera singers and companies, the work builds on earlier research in this long-neglected subject, and brings the black musical legacy to new levels of prominence and accessibility. It is a comprehensive index to newspaper and periodical indexes (including H.W.
