My son always pointed out something in his video lessons that was a far fetched opinion versus a fact or extremely offensive in the name of religion. The videos seem to be from the 90s and don’t discuss anything going on in current world. The workload on the parent is extreme and you literally have to grade papers all year long. Documents have to be sent in by mail and then you wait and wait and wait and wait for grades. Thus, I’ve had basically the best of both worlds. The Abeka online program (for 12th grade), however, has been a horrible experience. I have no idea who is asleep at the wheel, but they aren’t doing their job. As in, not responding to emails for 20 consecutive days. Need I say more? I may be incorrect- customer service never replied to my question about that one. Go figure). Where a teacher would be more lenient when it comes to minor errors here and there, there is no room for that in the online quizzes and tests. Additionally, there have been many questions that have lowered my grades due to poor format, explanation, or just lack of description. I.e., for one of my courses, I took “Business Math.” One of the quizzes, I failed, because the problem had two different slots for two answers, but didn’t specify which answer should be input where. It marked some of my answers incorrect, and some correct, but overall I failed the quiz.As the Bible course is required for the accredited program (If I’m not mistaken), so is the “memorize long blocks of text taken from the same Bible the Pope used to use” course. every. week. Don’t get me wrong, the sentiment is good. For the history course, there are also these little devils called “Editorials” due every week, not to mention the busywork for said same class.Technically. Each video typically runs from 30-50 minutes long, and consists of the teacher rambling on about random topics for a while. Really, like a normal school. However, the videos are outdated and can be distracting at times. Truth be told (here I go confessing my sins), I stopped watching them after a few weeks because of how unnecessary they are. If your child is, like me, someone who dislikes long, drawn-out instruction and would rather learn through a fast-paced, experience-based curriculum, this program isn’t right for you. (Summary: Boring, outdated, and unnecessary video instruction) You’re probably expecting it, but get ready for the nightmare, anyway. If you actually got this far, I commend you.Grades Used: 6thMy child got so upset at the history teacher because she was talking negative about other religions. They make everything about God. The history doesn’t talk about slavery as it was. They only talk about missionaries and how they ministered to the slaves. I have begun teaching her my own curriculum of history because its ridiculous. Mr Howe is an amazing teacher and she loves him. But she has no respect for the other two teachers. Grades Used: 5Overall, I’m not talking just material, as a whole. No good. An average day takes us one on one from 8:30 to 4:30 sometimes later. NO customer service !!! I’ve called 3 days in a row and receive a “closed” message. I emailed over a week ago. NO Response !!! My anxiety level is through the roof as if you miss anything you’re in the weeds !!! The instructors on video speak so fast that both my child and I are spun by the end of the course so that leaves us to go over material one on one along with videos. That’s double effort and double time !!!! We have no life just keeping up. Fifth grades expectation is harder than I remember high school. I suppose if they would have customer service I wouldn’t be so upset ?? I’m on hold for over an hour and still don’t get people to talk too about urgent problems. Emails aren’t responded to, phone calls aren’t answered. They close before 3 everyday this year, and open after 7 often times. If I could get a refund I’d pull my child out right now. For a Christian program, this approach of constant unacceptable Catholic bashing is Not being Christian at all. It’s understandable how a program like this would easily sway the Catholic who is unfamiliar with his own faith. I had to listen to virtually every class in order to discuss incorrect teachings regarding Catholic history and beliefs. Mr. Smith, the teacher, evidently has been taught by Protestants about Catholicism. He needs to get back to his roots and study Catholicism from legitimate Catholic resources and even converts from protestantism. So, we thought using Abeka Academy would be the natural next step for my daughter for 9th grade. Since we were getting ready to head back to the field we opted to do the DVD’s instead of streaming as we weren’t sure what the internet situation would be. We ordered in August and were getting ready to return to the field in November. Well, one of the DVD’s didn’t arrive. Algebra DVD set 3 wasn’t ready but we were promised it would arrive before we left in November. In December, we were now on the field. No DVD yet. We called and they promised to mail it. One to us in Uganda and one to my parents in Missouri. Neither one ever arrived. I forgot about it until she got ready to use that DVD and realized that it never arrived. Now what are we supposed to do. Because of Covid our country isn’t receiving any mail from the US. Our credit card expired but we had a new one of course. Just a new date for the card. We kept getting emails that our payment was declined even though I called them monthly to update the card information. This went on for four months before they finally figured it out. The customer service people were friendly but not knowledgeable at ALL. They would transfer me 3-4 times to get my question answered. Once you start, your dates are set in stone. We took off about a month in moving overseas only to find out that her due dates for her Progress Reports all remained the same and so she had spent the whole year playing catch up. Plus it was confusing. We paid for an extension since she was going to be late for Progress Report 1, just to find out that it is called a “late work fee” unless it’s the end of the school when it’s called an extension and a different price. We had different people telling us contradictory things all the time. Teachers are boring and she usually just reads from the books herself. No real teacher interaction. We’ve used Abeka K thru 3 and we are starting 4th grade this year. I’m not sure why some reviews are saying that’s a negative. My mom (who was totally against homeschooling) was extremely impressed by how well she was reading by the 1st grade. Maybe it will be longer as she goes up in grade levels. What the heck are public schools doing these days. And maybe this is why our education in the U.S. isn’t up to par with the rest of the world. If you are wanting to do unschooling or less structure, Abeka may not be for you. I totally leave it up to her.Our enrollment was constantly being messed up, then after hours on phone I would be told it was fixed, only to learn later is was not. While we were considered “unenrolled” they sure kept auto payment running smoothly. The streaming videos consist of a teacher that speaks like she is talking to toddlers, my kid is in 6th grade, and constantly watching some poor kid named Isaiah get corrected for everything. Waste of time and money Mr Howe is aweful, he is rude to the students and does not explain the information well. Streaming goes down frequently so my children cannot do school that day. Biblical interpretations are completely inaccurate. I chose Abeka because the courses offered are college prep classes that will translate into no hiccups once they apply for college. My daughters and I had no problem switching gears from public school to Abeka. Their grades stayed consistent, they were done much earlier in the day than public school and had time for music classes and sports participation. I believe the success of the student depends on the attitude and work-ethic of the student, and the commitment of the parent to guide the student through the course work. Parental encouragement for participation in outside activities is just as important as the coursework. Abeka is reading and writing intensive which I believe better prepares the student for college. There are more quizzes than public school, but I believe this is a positive as it reinforces what the student is learning. If you are enrolled in the accredited program, the test books and answer keys are included in your purchased tuition-only enrollment. A challenging, very well-rounded education is attainable. I got pulled out with 2 months left in school. My parents put me in Abeka for schooling. Unfortunately, I had to start my 9th grade year over. After much contacting they accepted my transcript and moved me to the second semester. In Georgia schools typically spend the last two months on review for standard testing so i had basically finished 9th grade. Now I don’t watch the videos because I know the information. I wish that they would make the classes more updated and relatable. I will finish my schooling for 9th grade in September, then i will start dual enrollment at a local university. I wish Abeka had a way to share courses. I will also have to take my collage classes and then Abeka. In grade 8, there was five subjects, however, as each year progresses the amount of classes increases. In grade 12, for example, there is a total of 10 subjects. Each dvd is approx. 50 minutes long. There is no flexibility within the accredited option as you cannot chose which subjects you want to do- unless you opt for the independent study option (where you will not receive a diploma upon completion). Reading and writing is all done at night as homework. There is homework given in all subjects, every night. I am not against homework, but this means you almost have another full school day at night. Even when there is an upcoming test, there is no time for revision, as there is no let up in the homework. Because you are constantly being bombarded with new information, you have practically no time to revise over the previous content. I used to really enjoy art and pilates, as well as learning French, but during this program I have had to cancel them altogether. I will no longer be continuing with Abeka, instead, I am switching to a mastery-system homeschool program which offers flexibility and individualisation. The busy work was way too much. It took so long and after a while it was a battle to homeschool. We quit mid year and took up another program and I am so thankful. I first felt horrible in wasting all that money but we have been on the new for many months and I don’t have to ask them to start lessons. It’s a easy 2 hours plus a hour of additional math facts and reading. Time4learning, brainpop and veritas bible. Lifesaver sites!!! Pros-On your own time Cons- We get like 2 -3 quizzes a DAY and the videos are not fun at all.The teachers are terrible at explaining things, and I learn barely anything from the videos. No normal school gives a quiz EVERYDAY. This school is an example of what a good school environment doesn’t look like. This program is hell and Id rather go to a public school and get bullied.This is my first year homeschooling my son in third grade. I think how smoothly it will go will depend on how motivated and independent your child is. For my son, it is very time-consuming. We are not able to complete a single lesson in one day. We are aiming to complete the curriculum in one year instead of the standard nine months. That being said, I think it is a superb curriculum and I would highly recommend it. I remember using abeka for a few years as a child and I really loved it. I like how they incorporate the Bible into the curriculum. I feel like my son has really grown in his Biblical knowledge and understanding in the past few months. It is a very godly, Christ-honoring curriculum, of which the value cannot be underestimated. Cons: None Grades Used: Preschool through 12th grade.Our last two are in 12th grade. Let me clear something up here. People say that their students cannot ask questions. Yes they can. There are academic people at Abeka that students can call and ask questions. The customer service at Abeka has been exellent. They have always answered our questions and have been very flexible with our students. Students are allowed to take a course one year lower or one year higher. Their curruculim can be challenging but it kept my students on their toes and the appendix quizzes insured that they did their homework etc.My oldest went to college and was the highest in her class. This concept that homeschoolers are socially inept is bogus and on their parents. The reviews that say there are too many quizzes and papers show laziness on the reviewer. There are adequate amounts that make sure the students are studying and actually learning the work!!! I highly recommend this curriculim. First off, I want to say that being homeschooled was never my choice. I’ve been homeschooled my whole life. I used to beg my parents to let me go to “outside school”. I was forced to be homeschooled for many years and I do think that plays a part in why I have a bit of a negative view on Abeka. I started Abeka in Kindergarten when I was 4 years old, a year ahead of most kids. My parents put me a year ahead since I was gifted at reading but I always hated being ahead. I did well in Kindergarten but it was all downhill from there. I moved long distance when I was 5 and my education deteriorated since my mom wasn’t able to be a good teacher due to her own issues. I don’t remember a whole lot from 1st-3rd grade, but Abeka math when I was in 4th grade made no sense to me. They teach division in a weird way. Also I was never taught print writing and I had to teach it to myself when I was in middle school since all Abeka teaches is cursive. I was 4 years old learning CURSIVE and it was not easy. Every child needs to learn print first. I can’t believe they expect children in kindergarten to write in cursive, and the grading system for the writing tests is very strict as well. Anyway, for 5th and 6th grade I used BJU for my curriculum and overall that was a good experience. BJU taught me a better style of cursive and my writing was very good for a while because of BJU. For 7th grade I used SOS (Switched On Schoolhouse) and that was a huge mistake. I was still a year ahead at this point and I learned nothing my entire 7th grade year. I was put back into Abeka for 8th grade and it was quite a shock. I was still a grade ahead and I obviously couldn’t keep up to Abeka’s standards at that point. Also I had no social life since my parents never involved me in any homeschool groups or anything. I began to feel very isolated and there were a lot of things that went on that I consider neglect now. Because of all these issues, I convinced my parents to let me go back to the grade level I was supposed to be at. I finished 8th grade on track. It was very difficult though because I was expected to be a babysitter for my mom and at the same time basically teach myself. I had little to no help from my parents. And there were no real teachers that I could ask questions to. All I did was watch Abeka’s videos and take the quizzes and tests like a robot. I started 9th grade on track but then we moved long distance again and moving messed up my school horribly. I fell an entire year behind. We moved a second time after that and it just got worse. I struggled to finish 9th grade and then tried to get into a real school, but because of how behind I was, the charter school I wanted to go to couldn’t take me. I’m afraid of going to a regular public school because I developed extreme anxiety due to being isolated. I can’t work well in groups and I have a hard time with basic social skills. So for 10th grade I had to do Abeka again. Right now I am nearly two years behind in high school and it has devastated me. I’m 17 and not even done with the first semester of 10th grade. I should be a senior this year. I won’t graduate until I’m 19, possibly 20.
