Every 8th grader in the state of Texas has to take the STAAR science test, so we may as well give them all the tools and advantages possible for them to be successful on the exam. But we cannot do it without your support. They're an effective method for retaining knowledge. Reading and math tests must be passed for promotion from grades 5 and 8 in Texas. The required tests are given after the student has taken English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology, and U.S. History. Texas is currently planning optional tests for the conclusion of English III and Algebra II. Not only is attendance important, but various factions want to know, “What does the student learn while he or she is present?” Teachers want to know if their methods are productive, parents want to know if their children are doing well, and everyone else, it seems, wants to know if the school is doing its job. Students are encouraged to attend regularly and make the most of the instruction offered. But do they? And how well do they do that. What are the results. Enter the world of end-of-grade and end-of-course testing. Usually beginning in about the third grade, children and young adults are regularly assessed on their academic knowledge and skills. Your results let teachers and other educators know how well their courses of study prepare students and how effectively you have taken advantage of the school’s educational resources. Since passing scores on reading and math are required for promotion in grades 5 and 8, tests at these levels are given in early April to allow for remediation and re-testing in mid-May and late June. With sufficient online practice, students get exposed to test questions thus giving them a better understanding of how to tackle questions during the main assessment.STAAR is State testing program that was launched in Spring 2012 to replace TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) which had been in use for several years. Core subjects tested in STAAR include Writing, Reading, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science. Grade 3-12 students in Texas public schools take STAAR tests that were designed by the TEA (Texas Education Agency) working in partnership with Texas educators and THECB (Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board).The purpose of the STAAR test is to measure what students have learnt and how they are able to apply their skills and knowledge as specified in the TEKS (Texas Essential, Texas state curriculum standard. There are numerous resources online to help students practice and interact with questions and formats that will appear in the real exam.This is critical because online tests require thorough knowledge of keyboard commands to perform various tasks such as drag and drop and filling information into tables. Understanding keyboard commands and practicing will help develop these skills.For example, students need to practice using online calculations and creating equations and numerical answers with the keypad entry box.In preparation for the main exam, students should have as much time as possible to do practice tests using the same device that will be used in the exam. This will enable them get used to the gadgets and understand basic troubleshooting skills.However common ones for English include basic reading and writing. For mathematics, subject areas include algebraic relationships, conversion factors, formulas, data analysis. Before we know it the season of STAAR and standardized testing will be upon us once again. Whether or not I agree with the effectiveness of standardized testing I know that we, as educators, are all held accountable for each and every student’s success or failure. This all adds up to some intense pressure and stress. I hope this post will help to ease some of that stress. I always felt rushed trying to review and didn’t feel like my approach “flowed” like it should. This absolutely bothered me, so this past year I decided to create a STAAR Review Booklet that I could use with my students. This booklet is broken up into the 4 STAAR Science reporting categories and covers every single readiness and supporting TEKS. Four individual mini assessments are also included to help gauge student knowledge and comprehension. I have compiled a list of 5 ways to use this booklet within your classroom to increase its effectiveness. Tell them to highlight key information and to write down any questions they may want to ask in class the next day. I generally have my students create a “K-W-L” chart. They write what they already know (K), what they want to know (W), and what they have learned (L). This simple activity creates amazing conversations in class and it also promotes “buy in” from the students because they are the ones leading the discussion. My classes love it. Assign a page of the booklet to each group. Instruct the groups that they must become an expert of the concept they were assigned. They are able to explain concepts to one another amazingly well. My advanced students truly enjoy being able to take charge of the class. Try a “snowball fight” as a daily starter. You’ll get 100 participation and it’s quite possibly one of the quickest ways to review. Have the students take out a sheet of paper. They do not need to put their name on their paper. They will take more risks and be more willing to participate if it is anonymous. Turn to a random page of the booklet (or a page previously selected) and read the title of the page to the students. Give the students 15-20 seconds to write something on their paper that relates to the concept. The students will then crumple up their paper, like a snowball, and throw it across the room. All students need to pick up a “snowball”, unwrap it, and read it. The teacher can ask for volunteers to share some ideas that were written. This process can continue as long as you would like. I usually do 2-3 rounds with my students before moving on. You know their strengths and weaknesses. I like to invite my struggling students to tutorials that take place before school, during lunch, or after school. I separate these students into groups based on the concepts they struggle with the most. I use old tests, assessments, labs, or homework assignments as my data. I keep the groups small with no more than 6-8 students in each session. In these tutorials I use the STAAR booklet to review vocabulary and key concepts. A short rotation with teacher check points usually brings our session to an end. Students are given the opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions about anything they do not understand. This is a great way to build better relationships with your students. Start this early in the year and it will be life changing. At the end of each day or week assess your students’ comprehension of the concepts covered in class. This resource contains 4 assessments by reporting category that are ready to print and be used. You may even choose to use the assessments as a pre-assessment tool. Students that perform extremely well on the pre-assessment can help to peer teach other students. You may even differentiate your classroom to allow these students to work on some other enrichment activity or student choice activity (with teacher approval). STAAR tests measure the progress of students from 3rd grade to 8th grade, as well as high school. STAAR tests are also used in evaluating each school’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) as required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). STAAR tests are aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning standards. These Texas state standards define what Texas students should learn in every grade. Students must pass the Exit Level STAAR in English language arts, math, science, and social studies in order to graduate. Students who do not pass the eleventh grade Exit Level STAAR have multiple chances to retake the test(s). Students’ STAAR scores are determined by how well they have mastered grade-specific skills, rather than comparing their performance to other test takers. The Texas STAAR tests report students’ proficiency in each subject, using the following three levels: STAAR Performance Level Descriptors explain what is required to achieve “Met the Standard” and “Commended Performance” for every subject, and help parent and caregivers support their child’s progress. Third grade students must pass STAAR reading in order to be promoted to 4th grade. In fifth and eighth grades, students must pass both STAAR reading and STAAR math to be promoted to the next grade. Students have three opportunities to retake test(s) and receive remedial help if they don’t pass. All students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) take the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) tests, which measure progress in English language acquisition. Spanish-speaking students may also take STAAR in Spanish for up to three years. Linguistically Accommodated Testing (LAT) is provided to assist LEP students in overcoming language barriers and to provide a meaningful assessment of knowledge and skills. STAAR L is provided for English language learners (ELLs) who meet participation requirements for a substantial degree of linguistic accommodation in these subject areas. The real preparation for the STAAR tests, or any standardized test, begins with your commitment to your children’s education throughout their school years. Devote time and effort to helping your children learn. Start by making sure your kids do their homework and read every day. Many families also employ tutors or an online learning program, such as Time4Learning, to build fundamental skills. For instance, when a reading passage is followed by comprehension questions, many test prep programs teach students to scan the questions first in order to know what areas of the passage requires close reading. This may include, but is not limited to algebraic equations and functions, distance formula, converting data into equations, and interpreting charts and diagrams. Some of these questions may be especially challenging to students that have not before practiced enough math. Try to focus on each question, write down all the necessary calculations even if some seem trivial to you. After you are familiar with the complete solution, you can think of ways to reach the answer more quickly and improve your performance time. Some students may qualify for a Pre-AP mathematics course. In this case, students are not required to take the 8th Grade STAAR Test, but rather the EOC Algebra I Test. The first stage of prepping your child for the 8th Grade STAAR Math Test is pinpointing his or her level. This can be challenging to do on your own.
