Contacts in pressure sending unit not opening to shut off light. Variable resistor in sender is shorted to ground. 1. Locate the oil pressure sending unit on the front right side of the crankcase. 2. Verify that the electrical connector is properly connected to the sending unit. 3. If the oil pressure gauge indicates pressure but the low oil pressure light remains on, proceed as follows: a. Remove electrical connector from oil pressure sending unit. Place one ohmmeter probe on indicator lamp terminal (closest to latch), place the other probe on the crankcase. Meter must read zero ohms. b. Start the engine and run at a fast idle. The ohmmeter must read infinity. c. Replace the sending unit if the above meter readings are not obtained. 4. If the low oil pressure light functions correctly, but the pressure gauge does not, then proceed as follows: a. Remove electrical connector from oil pressure sending unit. The gauge must read full scale 70 PSI. c. Replace the sending unit if the above gauge readings are obtained. If the gauge readings are not obtained, then replace the pressure gauge. No power to gauge. See Voltmeter. CAUTION Cause Solution Sensor not grounded or open between sensor and gauge. Test for continuity between pin 1 and ground and pin 3 and gauge. Repair if open. Broken or disconnected power or ground wire to gauge. Replace gauge if voltage is present. Use voltage drop tests and continuity checks to isolate if voltage is not present. Malfunction in gauge or sensor. Instruments HOME Voltmeter Problem: Meter inoperative. With switch turned to OFF, check ground terminal for continuity to ground. 2. Replace the voltmeter if 12 vdc is present and ground terminal is grounded. 3. If 12 vdc is not present, trace wiring until disconnected or broken wire is found and repair as necessary. To zero the trip odometer, depress and hold the reset switch while the odometer display is visible. The trip odometer mileage will then appear for approximately 2-3 seconds, after which time the recorded figure is zeroed. The odometer can display seven numbers to indicate a maximum of 999999.9 miles. The trip odometer can display five numbers for a maximum of 9999.9 miles. Reset Switch See Figure 2-2. Besides toggling between the odometer and trip odometer displays, the reset switch is also used to identify the speedometer pulses per unit and to enter the diagnostic mode. So let’s talk about a few reasons to upgrade the exhaust headers. On a classic muscle car era automobile you’ll find a compact part with 90 turns and ports that share the task of removing exhaust fumes from multiple cylinders. Instead the exhaust takes a long flowing turn that enhances the ability to remove exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. This improves the volumetric efficiency of the engine. Therefore, we can say high-performance exhaust headers provide enhanced efficiency, because of the large diameter tubing, long flowing bends and polished inside surfaces to reduce drag and back pressure. The factory installed these compact manifolds because they didn’t have the room in the engine compartment. With that said, they also didn’t see it as the best way to increase horsepower at the time. Nevertheless, installing aftermarket headers on some classic muscle cars presents major challenges. I installed a pair of Lakewood performance exhaust headers on a friend’s Dodge Charger RT. Long story short, the header installation on the big block 440 cubic inch engine became a nightmare. We purchased model specific parts from a reputable Mopar specialist that designed the headers specifically for the Dodge Charger application. In addition, interference with the upper control arms and the tie rods became another issue. After we completed the installation the true problems began to surface. In order to clear some suspension parts the driver side header becomes the lowest part under the automobile. After going over a few speed bumps the tubes that carried exhaust gases from the front cylinders became completely smashed closed. Instead of increasing efficiency the end result became exactly the opposite. But no matter where we decide to boost performance, deciding to upgrade the exhaust headers maximizes the benefits of all the other alterations. I’m talking about cars like the Chevrolet Malibu Super Sport and the Ford Mustang pony cars. These automobiles utilized some of the most inefficient exhaust manifolds ever created by man. It’s not that the original designers of these engines did not understand volumetric efficiency, they just approached the horsepower wars in a different way. They decided to increase combustion ratios and cubic inches to achieve the desired performance level. Of course, they also had leaded fuel available to them at the time. This forced them in the direction of improving the intake and exhaust cycles on modern automobiles.
