I know that some people successfully cleaned the heat sink with a shop vacuum (some people say you can damage the laptop by static electricity when you are vacuuming, not sure about that). I would go with air cleaning. I want to reformat it but my cd rom is not working. I will really appreciate it!! Thanks a lot!!! Anabel From my experience, if the laptop has an internal DVD drive it cannot boot from the external DVD drive. The BIOS “doesn’t know” how to talk to the external drive because it wasn’t designed for it. You’ll have to find a new internal drive in order to reimage the hard drive. I can hear it run through Windows XP and boot up through the sound. But the screen won’t change. If the external video is displayed normal, I assume there is nothing wrong with the video card or motherboard. If reconnecting the cable will not help, I would probably go ahead with replacing the cable. Maybe it’s bad. If still not luck, it’s possible you have an issue with the screen. It wont turn on at all when the power button is pressed, sometimes it will randomly load up, but it is doing this less and less, and I havent been able to turn it on for a few days now. When it did load up, it loaded up normally. When the Ac adapter is connected, the light at the front of it turns on to indicate the battery charging, but I still get no response even after charging for a few hours. I have tried turning it on directly with the AC adapter (without the battery), but I still get nothing.If the problem goes away then it might be that the battery is overheating and needs to be replaced. It should still be under warranty. I don’t want to break it, so I’m asking first: are there any hidden latches I should know about? When I switch it on it powers up for a couple of seconds and then turns itself off again. All the fans start up and the hard drive and the screen flickers a few times before turning off. I can replace it myself but am having a hard time finding a dealer to sell me one. Very often this problem is caused by a faulty memory module. If you have two memory modules, remove them one by one. Test the laptop with only one memory stick in place. Also test the laptop with both memory stick in the slot A and then in the slot B. If the laptop works fine with both RAM modules installed in the slot A but freezes when they are installed in the slot B, you might have a faulty memory slot. One guy suggested cleaning the contacts inside the memory slot with an alcohol wipe, of course when the AC adapter is unplugged and battery is removed. It could be either software or hardware related issue. Can you start the laptop from a bootable CD or DVD disk (recovery disk for example). Does the drive recognize this disk at all. I do not troubleshoot software issues because it might takes hours to figure out what is wrong.I found out later that you don?t answer questions regarding acer laptops (so, sorry about that). Find out if the hard drive is detected by the BIOS. Make sure the hard drive is the first device in the boot order. 2. You can test the hard drive with Hitachi’s drive fitness test utility (link in Resources). 3. Try reconnecting the hard drive. Just unplug it from the motherboard and plug it back in. It’s possible that the hard drive got disconnected from the motherboard. In this case try reinstalling OS. 2. Failed hard dive. First, test the hard dive with Hitachi’s drive fitness test to make sure it’s bad and then replace the hard drive. 3. The worst case scenario. There is nothing wrong with the hard drive and there is a problem with the controller on the motherboard. In this case you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard. It’s already a replacement to the original battery and this time it charges up to 40 and then just stops, no matter how long I leave it on the AC power. Has anybody got the same problem. The battery is fine, and chargers when I can get the AC-adapter to work. I’ve actually had to tape the AC-adapter to the laptop to get it to work long enough for me to be able to use the laptop. I’d really like to know what I can do about it, if anything at all CAN be done. I need my laptop, and at the moment, I cannot afford to get a new one. PLEASE help. Also, let me know why my laptop will only work in safe mode. I’m pretty sure I know what the problem is and how to fix it when it comes to that, but I wonder if anyone else is having that problem as well. Thanks. Can some one help and guide me is any configuration or drivers issues. It still has the same problem, it comes on with no problem but then can’t do nothing. Will it work with the external devices? So I can’t get into the BIOS. It’s hard to tell what is wrong. 1. Could be loose connection. I would try reseating cables on the motherboard but it means you’ll have to open up the laptop case. 1. Could be something wrong with the motherboard. Anyway, test the laptop with an external keyboard. I was using a DSL and it won’t even let me install a dial-up to get on the Internet. When you connect through DSL, you are using Ethernet port, when you connect through dialpup, you are using the dial-up modem. It’s unlikely that Ethernet and dial-up failed at the same time. Try using Windows System Restore utility and revert it back to the time when your Internet connection was working. Like many people, I have to shove it in hard and turn it around at different angles until the light comes on, on the front of the laptop, that lets me know it’s working. Apparently, the power jack is loosing connection with the motherboard and has to be resoldered or replaced. Very common problem for different laptop brands and makes.
