All Rights Reserved.Simple theme. Powered by Blogger. Well, the next thing you know, I am asking for Ethan's help plotting out a skull grid for the project. It was in grief that I started the knitting. I used recycled charcoal worsted weight wool I had gotten in Germany while we were living there, mixed in with some Bone colored Montera. I was finishing it up 2 months later, when my Grandma Stafford died. This paralyzed the passenger beside me into silence for the entire flight. Aaaw, yeah. just the way I like it. Be sure to scroll down if the skull doesn't jump right out at you once you link out. This skull is grand due to the bulky gauge of the yarn. The same skull knit onto the men's vest as shown in the book appears smaller in worsted weight yarn. This turned out very similar to Voltaire's skull sweater. Excellent work! Karen had the best intentions, starting this pullover for the smaller of her lucky kids. But yarn substitution led to gauge mishap and the end result turned out a bit large. That means Karen is the lucky owner of a new pullover. Her lemur-esque acrobatics really caught my eye. Get her crossbones chart here. Make your own charts at Micorevolt ! Husband Bill was a willing model for this photo shoot. The upside of dupe stitch is that you can still knit your sweater in the round and add the chart as an afterthought. In fact, you could buy any sweater and punk it up with the skull. Isn't her husband a badass? (scroll down after clicking link). Without its lower teeth, her skull smiles. Her duplicate technique is absolutely flawless. To make your own, use the skull chart as the pattern and add some extra black squares around the edges so that the skull does not fill the whole afghan space. Look closely at this photo and compare it to the chart. Notice that the first white square on chart (chin) and on afghan, there are 4 double crochet stitches making that single square. So swatch to confirm that 4 double (or treble) crochet stitches makes a square slightly wider than tall. Then it's a simple matter to work the chart up into an afghan. Just crochet 4 stitches for each square and change colors as dictated by the chart and your gauge. Easy peasy In your email, be sure to state that I have your permission to use it here on my site, otherwise I can't and won't post it. If you want the skull for commercial reproduction, please contact me to discuss licensing my intellectual property. See email link at bottom of page. Many have said it's the best skull chart for knitting on the web. But the problem of hotlinks (and I don't mean spicy sausages!) causes me to change the filename frequently to shake loose the hot linkers. There is a right and a wrong way to link to an image on someone else's site; if you care to learn the RIGHT WAY, please get more info here. It's not at all difficult to do and it's free. Save the image and upload that, not the URL. Uploading a URL (a URL is.) that isn't yours is bandwidth theft. When you are using someone else's images, and they change the filname on you, you may find a very different and possibly embarrassing image appearing on your own blog one day and it will be your own fault. The downside of this for me is that it means people are using up bandwidth that I pay for without ever visiting my site. Heck, if you want some really, really cool goth skull and bones images, please visit this site about Kutna Hora, an ossuary in the Czech Republic I visited when I was living there in 1993. Be sure to explore all the links for skulls and bones galore. Please don't hotlink to them either. Be a good net citizen. Because this chart uses so few stitches, you can use it to add a tiny skull to anything. Chart could easily be applied to another pattern. PLEASE Do NOT hotlink. You can get the pattern HERE. Be sure to check out her Facebook page HERE too. I want to start off by letting you know how much I am amazed by this design. A relaxed slouchy fit, it can be made in customized colors just for you. I’m going to give you the step by steps on how I got these results. This is not the only way you can do it, it’s just the way I did it. Everyone crochets differently, so please adjust this to fit your style. You may need to add or remove stitches, depending on how tightly you crochet. Also keep in mind that using thicker or thinner yarn will alter your results. To define the teeth portion of the skull, you may want to block it. Check YouTube for blocking videos if you’re unsure of how to do it. At some point I hope to get a simple photo tutorial up about it, but I’m just not feeling it right now. I’ll be happy to help through email or comments though. Make a circle and sl st into the first chain. This forms your first eye socket. Mmmmm eye socket. Sl st into the 12th chain from the hook. This makes your second eye socket. You should have two circles with one chain separating them. You will be making these single crochets around the row of chains and NOT crocheting into the chain itself. Again, this is just a guide. You may decide you want more stitches here. 20 worked for me. If you decide you need more stitches, just make sure you do the same amount in each eye. That’s the basic rule for this whole project. What you do on one side you will need to repeat on the other side. If you’re a stickler for joining, go right ahead. If you’re a crochet rebel like me, skip it. Place 2 dc in next stitch (if you joined, chain 3 and put one dc in the same stitch). Dc in the next 3 stitches, hdc in the next 2 stitches, and sc in the next 7 stitches. This starts to form the shape of the skull. We aren’t going to work any stitches into this spot. So, if you’ve adjusted your count to work better for your style of crochet, just keep in mind you need to leave some stitches blank to allow for the nose hole. Yep. Nose hole. I’m classy.) Now we will do exactly what we did in the first circle, only backwards. 1 more dc, 2 hdc, 7 sc, 2 hdc, 3 dc. This should get you back to the chain 2 you made to create the nose. Place 4 dc into that space. Sl st into the top of the chain 3 that started this round. Cut your yarn leaving a tail to weave in and secure. You have a skull head, but something is missing. TEETH! It’s not exact, but it’s close enough. Count over 4 stitches to the left and reattach your yarn. Dc into the dc in the previous row and chain one. Do this across to get the second row of teeth. It’s a skull. Cut your yarn, secure it, weave in the ends. It’s NOT as hard as you think. You got this. So, I want you to make these, sell them, share them, and do whatever else you want to with them. You have my permission. You have my blessing. You have my appreciation. Happy crocheting to all of you! Bookmark the permalink. I have physical issues (and mental health ones too) that make working impossible. So crocheting gives me purpose. If you can’t crochet, at least you have the heart to let others do it for you. You live through us. And maybe we can live through you. So very kind of you again. Many blessings to you and yours! Sorry for your pain. I’m not sure what I’d do. If it makes you sick or just doesn’t work there are pharmacies that compound creams and can make a cream with gabapentin, lidocaine etc. I have seen it help quite a bit. Recently a coworker found cbd cream (I believe it is a relative of cannabis but doesn’t get you high lol) and finds this works for her MS related pain. I hope your condition improves. Thank you! It was very easy to make this skull. For my sister who I can barely relate to, a crocheted hat with a sugar skull and some roses on it is just what Santa ordered. I read your disclaimer and I wanted to let you know how thankful I am for you sharing this with us, and I hope you have found some peace. Well wishes being sent your way. Your story has also touched my heart and I want to say that your life has now blessed mine and that of the child I am making this for. Again, thank you for sharing. ? My sons loved it. Thank you for sharing your pattern. I would like to know if you did a diagram or a graphic pattern that can help better not all that smart on reading. I do appreciate it much thank you and again sorry to hear about your hands?? Thank you for sharing!! I’ve made 11 so far as halloween brooches. They have gone over huge for me. You have my thanks, respect, and empathy. Love always Awesome pattern and instructions. So easy to make! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. You’re amazing x Bless you for sharing this pattern and visual instructions. With so many different skull styles on the web I have struggled to find one that I absolutely, positively, simply agree with and am willing to incorporate into other patterns. This is the one! Those stupid ones with only one row of teeth? No. Ew. Next. I felt the need to reach out to you when I read your edit note at the end of the pattern. It broke my heart. Now I’m not here to send my sympathies or pity, I imagine that’s not what you need, or want for that matter. I am sending you my upmost appreciation, gratitude, admiration, respect, awe and understanding. I have rhuematoid arthritis and there are times when I cant even hold a hook in my hand. Those times are a direct contribution to the decline of my sanity. What do you do with your time now. How do you keep your creativity spinning. Whatever it is, I’m sure you’re kicking ass at it. So from one hooker to another, I say thank you. Seriously, thank you! I’m sorry you can’t crochet due to your degenerative disc in your neck. I have the same in my lower back so I know your pain. I hope you are able to get some relief. Again thank you for this pattern! Hopefully you have found a new hobby. Thank you for sharing this pattern. Perfect for g sons Christmas presants. Thank you for sharing! I have PsA which has greatly effected my ability to crochet as well. You are an angel to share. Thank you for that selflessness and may God bless you!-y I bought a cervical brace to wear when my neck hurts too much. I just can’t imagine not having crochet to get me through the tough times. Anyway, I hope this finds you well and thank you so much for sharing this pattern.God bless you. Generosity ranks right up there with love in my book, cuz sharing is caring. So sorry to hear about your neck discs n pain. I took suffering from degenerative disc disease and suffer most days through with horrific sciatica pain. Down my low back n legs, this kind of thing causes numbness, n just crabbiness altogether. Am I right, I hope someday the “experts” Will figure out a way to help us. My prayers to you. Thanks for sharing (and making them easy!)cool patterns! I’m a beginner and also very broke, this was just what I was looking for. Thanks so much. ?? ??????? I am sorry to hear that you can no longer knit or crochet. Best wishes to you from Devon, UK. Tina. I felt sad when I read that you cannot crochet anymore. I hope there is something that will make you feel better.
