If you don't tweak and play and fiddle, you won't get good sounds out of them. If you don't mind spending time learning how to work the settings, then you will probably get something sounding pretty cool. This is often the root cause behind people trashing multi-effects in general. On the surface they look so cool and accessable, one press of a pedal and it is sonic bliss. But then once they grow tired of that sound, they grow frustrated with dark complexity that often defines the guts of the multi-effect, and never fully comprehend how to make it sound good, thus writing it off as crap long before they should.The next thing I need to tackle is the sequencer. I also suggested to Boss that they put out an instructional video which they said was probably in the process of being worked on. I just found the instruction manual not as concise as it should be. The GT6B is a powerful multi. As it's been said ya just need to sit down and figure out the way to optimize the available fx. IMOThis will make my third multi-effects unit. My other two are a Peavey BassFex and a Korg Pandora PX3B. The Korg is more of a practice unit for me but the Peavey, man this thing is nice. Same deal though, you have to learn how to use it. I guess I'm getting ready to go to school again with the GT-6B!Some of the chorus effects couple with my Jazz fretless were amazing. The distortion effects are good, but I think I will rarely use them. The bass synths are OK, but still don't track too well - I think if you want a good bass synth you need to spend over double the money and get the Roland V-bass. So if the pedal was down then the sound would be without effect, and when i start to move the pedal more and more effect is added to the sound. I know this is possible as there are certain presets banks with effects that can be controlled by the expression pedal. I have tried to understand the manual but failed many many times miserablly. Damn, you guys are actually looking for sounds in this thing.I've been stoked about the fact that I finally figured out how to mute the tuner and run it to an actual pedal!!This means when you are making a new sound you can copy this default sound to the one you are about to make. That gives you a good starting point for your eq settings. But remember every sound you create might need a different eq setting anyway. I had this one up and running in no time and was tweaking knobs like a pro. There is a ton of features, easy to get a great tone and it's a BOSS. It looks and sounds great with a simple interface via knobs and not menus so it shouldn't be intimidating to someone new to Multi-FX units. This is the perfect multi-purpose BOSS back for any of their floor or table-top multi-processors. I originally purchased one for my BOSS GT-8 and was so impressed by the quality and exceptional value I purchased two others; one for my BOSS RC-50 Loop Station and the other for my Roland GR-20 Guitar Synth. No more digging through a bag to find the right cords for three different units. BOSS definitely got it right with this accessory. I owned this many years ago when it was first released (I recently re-purchased it on ebay). It does have quite a learning curve, but has anything you could ever want as far as versatility. There are some Youtube videos you can check out for certain things, they can help. I thought the amp modeling was a neat addition to the GT series. Some people are extremely critical of the sounds from the amp models and such, but you just really need to be looking for that particular sound in what you are writing. I don't believe it has any bad sounds to it at all, it just needs the correct context for which it is being used. Sure it has some strange effects, but you never know what you might find yourself using. This is my first use of such a system. There is no doubt you have to read the manual and it takes a little time. Once you have a grasp of the effects, you can start to enjoy your own input. It has made a huge difference in my playing. Over the years, Boss has loaded these do-it-all tone command centers with tons of features and sounds, with which a player could spend countless hours tweaking to their delight. One of the company’s most recent multi-function toolboxes is the GT-1B, a streamlined unit designed for bassists that’s jam-packed with 21st-century features. One can send an MP3 device through the aux in and plug in a pair of headphones for isolated listening capabilities. In fact, the only component seemingly missing from the GT-1B is a coffee maker, but I refrained from holding that against it. The GT-1B is powered by either four AA batteries or an AC adaptor (not included). The trio of knobs located on the upper-middle section of the device allows you to navigate the various, selectable parameters displayed on the LED screen. For simple navigation, the “easy” section on the left side consists of two buttons that organize the effects based on music genre or effects categories, such as clean, crunch, or modulate. Reviewing the features of the GT-1B is like trying to explain Game of Thrones to someone who has never watched an episode. There’s a lot going on, and a lot to share. Fitting all of my impressions of the GT-1B would take as much space as a few gear reviews combined, so I’ve tried to keep it as concise as possible.Massive tonal offerings in a relatively small package. The Tone Studio app makes for easy tweaking. Likely won’t satisfy analog disciples. You should, of course, read the instructions for the device, but my initial exploration of the GT-1B began by simply hitting buttons and turning knobs. Pedestrian as this may sound, anyone who has had to learn a smart phone’s OS will be just fine experimenting with the pedal. Once familiarized, I opened up the Tone Studio and quickly found it to be a more pleasing way to manipulate the unit. It’s easier to explore the preset effects as well as change the parameters of the sounds. In particular, the “liveset” feature in the Tone Studio’s library is great for organizing effects for a particular gig or re-organizing the effects for easy access. There are numerous onboard fuzz and distortion options, which, depending on the desired timbre, ranged from subtle to snarling. The wah sounds were impressive, as they responded to the touch with immediacy and characteristic swelling. Boss did a nice job with the “octave wah” effect, which tracked very well, and the “boots funk slap” preset got me pretty close to the implied bassist’s tone. I really dug the “head hunt synth” preset, which emulates the bubbling synth sound heard on Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon.” And it was a blast experimenting with the “pipe organ” effect and the ethereal textures that “atmosphere” and “dreamy” created. It goes without saying that the presets and effects of the GT-1B inspired different and unique approaches to my playing. I’m not going to tell you the tuner is as precise as my strobe tuner, but it was accurate and quick. The looper function provides 32 seconds of sampling with layering capability and was simple and fun to use. I found it to be a valuable tool for practicing, whether I was soloing over looped chord changes, rehearsing melodies, or crafting quick compositions. Add to all this the means to record with the device, since it serves as an audio interface (which was used for the audio samples you can hear online), and I found the GT-1B to be a pleasing, albeit sometimes exhausting, playing partner. Opening it, checking out all of the colors, and scribbling on paper to see how they look. The GT-1B is the sonic equivalent of the big Crayola box.
